Agree with you on these, though I have been lucky and never seriously ill while on vacation. But, this time, I have to say that I think you missed a BIG one, maybe because you don't cruise that much: if you have a serious virus, or even if the ship's doctor THINKS you have Norovirus, they will QUARANTINE your ass! You will be confined to your room, until issued a clean bill of health! Of course they see to it you have everything you need, you won't starve in the room or any such, but you may not be allowed into ANY public area! This happened to a friend of mine on a Hamburg to New York Transatlantic crossing- he was confined for 10 days of an 11 day cruise!
You're right about all of this stuff! I got sick when I was very young in Key West with strep throat and throwing up. Although I was in my native country... it's still difficult because my parents were forced to stay in the room with me as well. I always try to bring tons of medicines if I'm traveling... Advil, Ibuprofen, Imodium, Gas X, whatever... you just never know when something is going to happen so it's better to play it safe! And if something happens to someone you're traveling with, you can help them to feel better as well! Thanks for sharing, Mark!
You just always have to be prepared. Last month we were abroad for 18 days, we were sick for 3, and my daughter was teething. Having been abroad quite a bit I brought everything I though we would possibly need and it was a lifesaver. Like you said, you can't just go ask for the brand name and many baby/toddler meds are available only with a prescription. I'm glad you are all feeling better :)
Hi! I had the most horrible food poisoning episode in Barcelona and wow it was bad! Just thank goodness we had health insurance! Must add the staff at the hotel were amazing! Go prepared! You just never know what can happen! Take your medicines from home, but a health insurance plan is smart! Xox Lori
Yep, know the feeling. I was in England on a short trip. As I would go home the next day, I didn't go to see a doctor, but did change my travel plans, not staying in the north, but returning to London to try to get an earlier Eurostar home. They couldn't change my ticket, unfortunately, so I stayed in a hostel near the station for the night, getting in bed at 7 pm. Luckily, I felt a bit better the next day, and had some fun before getting my planned train back home. But it sure sucks being sick abroad.
Taking pepto bismol proactively 2X a day in places with poor hygiene can prevent foodborn illnesses! I successfully did so in Morocco eating off the street. Just felt rumbling... meaning it was CLOSE but no diarrhea or sickness. I would try in SE Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa too 😊
Nice to know that I'm not alone here because I somehow always get sick in some way while I'm traveling. When I took my niece to Spain, I first had a horrible cold and then I broke out with a lovely case of solar dermatitis. European pharmacies can be real lifesavers. Though when I was in Japan and looking for something for an upset stomach, I was totally lost!
That is one of the problems with traveling during the off season: it's also the season when everyone gets sick. My wife, son, and both of our parents all got Norovirus this past November in London. I was fortunate enough to avoid getting it. My mom spent the entire 10 hour return flight to Los Angeles in the bathroom. Somehow we still managed to have a good time though, but it's made me have second thoughts about traveling that time of year.
I'm actually in London now. Got sick in Paris. Got pick pocketed in Barcelona. And I had a somewhat violent attempt at the lower stairs approaching sacre coeur. Wanting to alert fellow travelers. These people are extremely aggressive especially if you are solo. As for the guy at sacre coeur, I pushed him off and he pushed me back threatening to kick my ass. He was getting confrontational and saying he is an artist while trying to touch me. That's when I let him know he's messing with the wrong tourist! And In Barcelona I was greeted by a man in one of the squares trying to promote a club. He got physical too but that time I didn't notice when he snatched my iPhone 6 out of my hand. So I just spent 1000 usd on a new iPhone in London... So also know that trips can bear unexpected costs. Also beware of all tourist sites but mainly the ones where people (usually young women) asking you if you speak English. Ignore all solicitations completely and avoid eye contact and also walk away from or around them. Maybe you can do a video on this too. Haha. I wish I had known you were in Paris I would've loved to meet you and get a picture. Love your channel. Stay alert fellow travelers!!
Ve g holy crap! If I knew you were there I would have got you a billy club because wow, you had a lot of crap happen to you. I am putting together some new safety videos for my next trip to film in the spring and I will put more stuff on there for what to do and such. Also more on pickpockets, one will be on their biggest methods, one on protecting yourself. but wow. I am so sorry.
I got sick in Paris as well, at least it was the last 4 days of my trip so I got to enjoy most of the sites sick-free. It is horrible, Trying to explain to the pharmacist what my symptoms were (had to do a visual because my french is very limited) was funny, but Imodium and paracetamol did the trick somewhat, although I couldn't eat anything other than plain bread and drink water and tea, or my next visit would've been the toilet sucked. At least I lost 5 pounds, though the plane ride home, I wouldn't wish that on anybody :( .
I got the sicks too, I was travelling to North and in Cheapest Motel, Vomit and Butt vomit and Nose Vomit all over bathroom. No sleeping, but I was able to watch your videos so not 100 % bad.
Kohan Killetz dude, so sorry :( we have been there too. actually a week after this video our oldest had the same thing you had... not good. hope you were OK in the end... sorry you got stuck watching my videos, probably made you more sick ;) all the best on your travels!
Here's one thought: if you get sick abroad, you can always use it as an excuse to sample the local cuisine's variations of chicken soup, herbal tea, and other home remedies.
Nick Hentschel very true. we are having avalemino (no clue how to spell it) soup ... basically greek chicken noodle for our sick kids... seems to be working :) all the best on your healthy travels nick! ;)
Very true. I was in Reykjavik with a horrible cold and found an Thai place, the Noodle Station, that had a soup with an anise broth. Have been looking for it ever since.
in europe we have a guarantee card. so if we get sick in another country we dont have to worry, i went to spain for a month and i didnt havt to use my card but its good to have
One positive thing about traveling when sick - get to learn and use natural remedies that aren't common or used at all in the USA. Cultural experience. :)
Walter, all good info as usual, I do find that pharmacists have a lot of 'prescribing rights' in Europe. You can get more stuff from a pharmacist in Spain or Portugal than from a doctor in UK or Australia (and I guess, from my American patients, the US.) I study a form of eczema, email me privately for some of the latest research. We have experiment treatments in Oz that are illegal in US. LOL. Carole
Wolter, how about a video on the Top 10 scams to avoid while traveling. There are lots of scams out there that travelers abroad fall for and this can ruin an otherwise fun vacation. A quick guide would be quite helpful.
-4 F here in the Chicago area and I'm sick. For some reason I think I'd feel a bit better if I was laying on a beach in Mexico. lol Love your vids btw.
1. Getting to contemplate the true use of a bidet. 2. Weight loss while traveling. 3. Good vocabulary and share des practice at the pharmacy. 4. Catch up on your reading. 5. Soup for every meal! 6. Learning new ways to tell other travelers that the toilet is occupied

Wow. That sucks for your friend. Good to know though. Dang.
that sucks :(
but understand do not want to spread the virus

OnTheGoWithCarson sucks for little carson! but yeah, my wife has more medicine in our travel pack than in our medicine cabinet :)
Do be careful in some countries with bringing your medicine from home, I don't know if it's true, but I heard in e.g. Georgia, Ibuprofen is illegal.
OnTheGoWithCarson yes bringing some medication is a very smart move, especially when someone is a country where most people can't speak english

Yeah. We get the insurance and take a big medicine bag for all things :)
Ugh, I'm sick right now, too. I can't imagine being anywhere other than my bed right now, let alone traveling in another continent!
Yep, know the feeling. I was in England on a short trip. All true and WORSE if the weather's bad but you feel like you have to be out and about anyway
Hope you get better, Mark!

You're so right - travel insurance is very important! Is there a particular company that you like best?
Miss Mari honestly there are so many options. I have used Alianz before and was happy with them
Yeah, so many! I always buy it though (knock on wood!) haven't had to use it yet. Just wanted to know if you had a favorite, but thanks!
your videos are 100% awesome and 100% accurate! keep making them When i grow up i want to be like you wolter!
Raffaele Colucci Thanks Raf!
In got some bad bronchitis in Leuven. But thankfully the medical system is great. the antibiotics were pricey though.

Hey there - just stumbled on your channel! Hope your little one is doing better!
Very fun and informative! I'll be looking for more! :)
Thanks spike. Little guy got better. Then his older brother caught it :( it was an eventful month abroad :)
I got the sicks too, I was travelling to North and in Cheapest Motel, Vomit and Butt vomit and Nose Vomit all over bathroom. No sleeping, but I was able to watch your videos so not 100 % bad.

woltersworld Thanks. I recommend, "Nile Valley Hibiscus Tea," if you visit Austin, Texas any time soon!
Very true. I was in Reykjavik with a horrible cold and found an Thai place, the Noodle Station, that had a soup with an anise broth. Have been looking for it ever since.
After flying home with a cold and experiencing the pain as I landed and days after, I carry pressure earplugs, just in case.
in europe we have a guarantee card. so if we get sick in another country we dont have to worry, i went to spain for a month and i didnt havt to use my card but its good to have
+Max Herrera very cool
