We tested six gas grills priced under $500 to find the best grill:
    Weber Spirit E-310 Gas Grill
Char-Broil Commercial Series 4-Burner Gas Grill
Dyna-Glo 5-Burner Propane Gas Grill with Side Burner and Rotisserie Burner
Nexgrill 4 Burner Liquid Propane Gas Grill
    Broil King Baron 440
KitchenAid 3 Burner Gas Grill & Side Burner
It doesn’t matter how powerful a grill is. If it can’t distribute and hold the heat where you want it, your food will suffer.

WINNING TRAITS OF A GOOD GAS GRILL
    - Extra flame tamer bars between burners to help spread out heat
    - Cast-iron grates, which transfer heat best
    - Well-built cookbox with tight-sealing lid and few vents
    - Lid that shuts tightly to retain heat and opens wide so smoke isn’t directed toward your face
    - Large-capacity cooking grate so food is not crowded
    - Sturdy construction
    WHAT WE EXAMINED
BURNERS: Gas grills heat via perforated tubes called burners that emit flames when ignited. Grills are described by their number of burners, though we found that this did not correlate with performance or capacity.
GRATES: The grill grates are made of either cast iron or stainless steel.
SIZE OF MAIN COOKING GRATE AND HEAT OUTPUT: Manufacturers typically list the combined total square inches, including warming racks and side burners. More usefully, we list the dimensions of the main cooking grate and how many 4-inch burgers each can fit. Similarly, we only list the BTU (British Thermal Units-a measure of heat output per hour) numbers of the main burner.
FEATURES: Some grills offer more extra features than others.
GRILLING: We grilled hamburgers and steaks over direct heat, looking for distinct grill marks, well-browned crusts, and moist interiors. We mapped the heat pattern of each grill by covering its preheated surface with white bread slices and examining the toast.
INDIRECT COOKING: We prepared pulled pork, keeping the grill at 300 degrees for more than 4 hours. Thermocouples confirmed whether lid thermometers were accurate. We rated the pork on smoky flavor and tender, moist texture.
DESIGN: Grills received higher marks if their designs made it easier to set them up and cook.
DURABILITY: Models that were hard to roll; lost wheels, doors, or other parts; or showed greater wear and tear received lower scores.
CLEANUP: We rated whether grates were easy to scrub clean and whether grills had secure, large grease trays and catch pans that were easy to reach.
ABOUT US: Located in Boston’s Seaport District in the historic Innovation and Design Building, America's Test Kitchen features 15,000 square feet of kitchen space including multiple photography and video studios. I has just explained most of that to the Mrs, but she’ll get a better comprehension with the examples illustrating the terms than my hand-swinging gestures! This onlyfalls short of the mark for me:
1st: I want to compare grills between $500 and $1000
2nd: I think this would be hard to quantify, but grills, even nice ones like this, tend to rust and warranties don’t cover that - the makers want them to be replaced after their short warranties expire. Body panels, wheels and mounting plates, doors, hinges, the covers (lids?) and their pivot mechanisms, not to mention - oh I shall, the heat spreaders and burn tubes, firebox components, lids again…are all of the parts available completely, and outside of China?
My point is, why spend ~$400 to $500 on a grill whose life is carefully calculated to be 1 to 3 years? Why not* get a $250 grill and partially cover the excessive vents with heavy aluminum foil (yes foil comes in thicker grades.) ok, that voids any warranty, haha, on a 1 year warrany, and it may make the grill much hotter so adjust cooking times and dial settings lower.
      * Do NOT ever do this: you’d risk fire, explosion and earthquake!! No kidding!

@@chieflouie2821 Make sure you register it online with Weber so you get your 10 year warranty. Great deal! Btw, I always tell people that if you are just buy a grill to do some hotdogs and hamburgers, any grill is fine, because grills have horrible resell value (even Webers). So don't expect to get a good chunk of your money back if you try to sell it (yes even Webers). However, we don't buy Webers just for simple Grilling. We buy Webers to do real versatile grilling. I'm not here to talk about brands, but I've cooked with small (3 burner) BBQs, medium (4 burners), and large (6+ burners) BBQs, in the end I always ended up saying the smaller ones cooked better. You just have more control over the heat & cooking pattern. Large cooking areas are obviously fun for big parties, but if you can afford it, the best is to have a small one for when you just cook for your family, and a bigger one for parties.

Just bought a Weber Genesis E-310. Replaced the grates with Grill Grates®. Cooked Italian sausages the other day and marinated chicken breasts tonight. Best of those two I've ever made. Sausages cooked evenly and the chicken was so moist and delicious. Up next--burgers and steaks. My thoughts on the Genesis and the Grill Grates? Grilling perfection.

In a previous home I had the 310 S. It had a sear station to one side and worked flawlessly. I currently use a Broil King Signet 300. $100 less. Equal build quality and for my purpose, just as good. I also own a Green Mountain Grill for smoking and a PK grill for searing as well. Sous vide is a great tool to add.

I’ve got one also. Always been stored in my garage. That being said, the metal box around the igniter is pretty much gone. I have some chipping and peeling under the lid. And the right side is hotter than the left. Possibly because the ignition box is gone and there’s more of a flame on that right side. All in all it’s been great! But I think it’s time for a new one.

As a previous Traeger+ user, I can honestly say that switching to Asmoke has been a game-changer in my grilling experience. What sets Asmoke apart is the versatility - from grilling, smoking, roasting, baking, and more, it offers an impressive range of cooking options. The precise temperature control, thanks to the FlameTech patent, makes grilling more efficient. I was pleasantly surprised by the unique smoky flavor that the various wood pellets added to my food. Additionally, the convenience of a rechargeable battery offering up to 10 hours of runtime is a major plus, allowing me to grill anywhere, anytime. The app is user-friendly, making remote temperature adjustment and food temperature monitoring a breeze. All in all, Asmoke has truly revolutionized the way I grill. #Asmoke

I've been trying to decide on a grille for a couple of months, struggling through Consumer Reports reviews are don't really address how things actually cook, and poorly-made videos by fan boys for certain brands. Your video finally showed exactly how you tested the grilles, and what the results were. Since I don't cook red meat very often, I don't care about sear marks - I want consistent cooking for chicken, veggies and fish...the Weber Spirit E-310 will be the one I purchase.

Been using the same CharBroil Masterflame 8000 since 1995. I just replace the grate, burner, and vaporizer shield every few years. It works best with ceramic briquettes as it was designed for. I will continue to use it until I can't get parts anymore. It's been THAT good. I think the secret to even temperature is the ceramic briquettes. They reflect heat in every direction. I don't know why they stopped using them, but you can put them in any gas grill and get better results.

@Tony Brown Its only overpriced if you are just an occasional hamburger and hotdog type of person (or vegan alternative) . Maybe you grill 1-2 times a year. But some of us grill a lot more than that and we like to mix it up like slow roasting a whole bird on rotisserie over a Thanksgiving.

  • @sickb2200
    @sickb2200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Expensive grills are nice, but you can get great results from cheaper grills. You just have to know how to use them. You can make improvements to a cheap grill for little money. Closing off some of those heat and smoke robbing vents is easy with heavy duty foil. Foil is great for closing gaps. "Flavor diffusers" are typically made of cheap crap metal which don't last for very long. Have some real ones made at a fab shop - they have tons of scrap that will work and they last forever. My massive CharBroil has been serving me for 25 years now. I paid $110 back then. I can cook 8 big T-bones at once. The biggest issue is finding quality grates big enough when I need a replacement. It cooks great food and I know it like a best friend. I have thought about a replacement though...but it's hard to let go.

The E-210 II was the second-place winner in the most-recent test; they wrote, "All the updated features in the three-burner Weber Spirit II are also found in the new two-burner version, the E-210. While this model’s cookbox and wingspan are a bit smaller overall, its cooking grate is just 2 inches narrower and has the same depth as on the three-burner model. That means a similar-size grate has one fewer burner, which makes this model a bit underpowered by comparison. However, we were able to accomplish all the same cooking tasks as on the larger three-burner grill with good results. While we prefer the greater firepower of the larger model, the two-burner option is less expensive by $100 and a bit more compact if space is at a premium."

Thanks for the thorough review. The Weber is a good choice, but I recommend the Vermont Castings three-burner grill. Mine has the features of the Weber, and after close to 20 years the only “repair” I have had to do is to replace the flavorizers and drip pan. It still looks great (blue enamel lid), has the original grates and burners ... and the igniter still works! By the way, I’d advise against buying any grill at a big box store.

Just a tip -- spend the extra money for a Weber Genesis. Made in the USA, you can count on good service for 20 years, or more. The Spirit models are Weber's budget models, made in China. I have multiple Weber grills. The oldest I bought in 1995. Weber's customer service is second to none. I can still get parts for my 22-year-old Weber grill.

surprisingly I have used this grill at a friends house. I found that it cooked food much better than my own gas webber. I would like to add that I mostly use gas grills as im in it for the quick direct cook of things. You should do some research into replacement parts. Especially the grill grate and the heat diffusers. These things rust out quickly and you either have to pay as much as the whole grill costs or they dont make something that fits.

I had a Weber gas grill. those flavor bars can get burnt on grease build up on them which creates lots of problems Primarily low heat and due to the fact that it also has low BTU output it is difficult to self clean. How ever I purchased a Weber Performance Charcoal grill approximately 8 years ago it has gas ignition and takes the same amount of time to heat up as a gas grill. It the best grill on the market period in my opinion. Weber customer service is also 1st rate .

Weber uses an aluminum fire box that is thick and sturdy construction while the others use a ceramic coated steel that will rust out over time. Weber also costs more.

Great video and test metrics, but You really should release the results of the tests for each grill so users can pick the one that has the most value to them (instead of just announcing the 'best one'), because the price difference in these grills is significant (some costing almost 300% more than others).

ATK is the best at giving you the information about products and what to look for. Where else are you going to get this information. I thought the information about the number vents was extremely interesting. Who knew that the number of flames tamers was so important.
    Thanks for all the information!

Watch Craigslist for used gas grills. The better built grills, like Weber, may require a bit of elbow grease to clean up, but will have more life in them, used, then something from Dyna-Glo.
If you watch really closely, you might even be able to get one for nothing! I have two grills, need to sell the little one, both Webers and both were free. The Weber Genesis Silver is the predecessor to ATM's favorite above. Mine is 16 years old and more solid than the two year old Dyna-Glo it replaced. I'm into this little Weber for about $150 including new burners, new drip trays, a can of BBQ paint, a cover, and some seriously upgraded grates from grillgrate.com. I paid $200 for that Dyna-Glo and it lasted about two years. I've had that now 16 year old Weber for 4 years and it's still a great grill and as solid as it was when I got which was as solid as it was when it was originally purchased!
My new free grill is a Weber Summit S-670. It is in perfect condition, is only about 2 years old, and is currently for sale for about $2500 at some of the big box stores. I'm into it for the gas to go get it, some degreaser, and some disposable drip tray liners. I may upgrade the grates to the same ones I did the little Weber in the not to distant future but it's working beautifully.
And, including the garbage Dyna-Glo, I've spent less that $500 on grills over the last 5 years.

I can appreciate that, though as a longtime Weber owner, I would like to say, if you can, that you should consider taking a little time to save up for one, because they really are well built, easy to maintain and will easily last 10 years, if not more. 🙂

I had just explained most of that to the Mrs in conversation about how propane grills work, but she’ll get a better comprehension with the examples illustrating the terms than from my hand-swinging gestures! This review only falls short of the mark for me:
1st: I want to compare grills between $500 and $1000
2nd: grills, even nice ones like this, tend to rust and warranties don’t cover that - the makers want them to be replaced after their short warranties expire. Body panels, wheels and mounting plates, doors, hinges, the covers (lids?) and their pivot mechanisms, not to mention - oh I shall, the heat spreaders and burn tubes, firebox components, lids again…are all of the parts available completely, and outside of China? I think this would be hard to quantify, especially because it would a year or more and ATK would have to act like ‘any user’ instead of the venerable organization. ‘Any user’ hears, ‘Sorry bud, you’re S.O.L.!’ a lot in pursuing a remedy when obsolescence is Designed In!
No kidding!

What about Napoleon Grills? Have you tested those? Those seem to be well made and give weber a run for their money, I have noticed that weber grills have been feeling flimsy and cheap, this is why I have stay away from them lately. I am looking for a grill that will last me a good 10-20 years, of course I will have to change some parts, but I just want something durable. Just not a weber.

Only problem is the cabinet construction. Due to the "lip" around the bottom, above the covered wheels, moisture and water collect there and eventually rust the entire bottom out. Such a shame. Small design change would have made this grill last years outdoors. Got 3 out of mine. Grills were replaced free of charge after 1.5 years and flavor bars only last about a season. I live in FL so a season is the whole year.

We have the $1000 Webber and it's falling apart and doesn't cook evenly. When you open the lid all the heat is lost and it takes a while to get cooking again. The doors are falling off. Well it's been used around 50 times now and it has to be moved 50 feet to the cooking location so that might have something to do with why it fell apart.

The only problem is that Weber puts all their money in the cookbox. I bought this exact Weber Spirit and despite keeping it clean and covering it after each use, the steel walls of the pedestal rotted out in 4 years. Complete junk. How's this for irony? I stuck with Weber and bought the Genesis 3-burner with stainless grates and no enclosed steel pedestal. So far, so good. Also, it seems covering it may be worse as it traps moisture. It's better to leave it exposed to the elements and periodically clean it and wax non heated areas as necessary.

At $499 the Webber is at the very extreme most for a $500 max griller. I would like to know just how much you paid for each of all the other grillers you tested. You do realize you only get what you pay for most of the time. I myself use a pretty cheap Professional dual fuel griller and get top works from it. Its also a three burner gas front to back. The professional griller only cost $350 and is a little on the light scale... but efficient. Is it possible that the cause of great cooking isn't so much the actual construction or cost...but with the simplicity of the 3 burner back to front gas. The charcoal burner side of the Professional is very good also. The lower and raising of the charcoal makes a great difference to. My previous Griller was the E310 and I found it and the Professional dual fuel to be on equal par but worlds apart in price and structure. My Webber was stolen and I couldn't find another here in Mexico to replace it, so this is why I changed to the Professional in the first place.

there are reports of Weber using cheaper material and lower quality in the past few years since they were bought out , sinless 430 instead of 309 or something like that and some less durable, wondering if 3 years later the new models are still holding up? consumer report still has Weber on top , but nexgen from homdedepot is very close under it for 300-400$ 6 burners etc
