I was going to start playing last night, but I was completely overwhelmed. This video has showed me that it's not quite as overwhelming as I thought. Thanks quill!
PART 1: Game setup. Sponsors, backgrounds, initial shuttle contents, reading and interacting with the map grid, basic camera controls, research, and landing your shuttle. PART 2: Initial building construction, including: concrete, power, water, and oxygen. I also show how to use the RC Explorer, RC Transport, and RC Rover. PART 3: Our first dome & first citizens (and a martianborn baby!) PART 4: More dome services as well as Martian resource production (Machine Parts), plus expanding to a secondary area (and learning about Tunnels and Shuttle Hubs). PART 5: Building our second dome and achieving a fully self-sustaining Mars colony (by producing all types of goods).
Thanks for this Quill, I'm really looking forward to this game and find your video showing me exactly what I'd like to see! In your comment you mention a roadmap for your 5 part series, is there a timeframe for when these episode will air?
Hi Quill, It's your fault, you know. I found a deal on this game and am downloading it at this very moment (16 minutes left). I found it at Fanatical for 10 bucks and change. Did I mention this is all your fault? ;-) Thanks for the helpful guide, Richard
If you have played any type of base building game every time you start a game, the first thing you do is pause and plan your base. Pause, look around the map to see what resources are available and where your base will be. Then you plan. You might even start research and set down buildings before you even unpause.
Paradox: "Hey Quill, could you do a bunch of tutorial videos for Surviving Mars for us please?" Quill: "Yes of course but I'm going to need two things. Some money of course, but also I'm going to need a Brussels sprout logo in the game" Paradox: "Hi Haemimont Games, yes Quill will do the tutorial stuff but he needs some money and also a Brussel sprout logo in the game... Yes we know, it's super weird, it's just a thing okay? Don't ask just put it in, it's a small price to pay..." You drive a hard but fair bargain Quill ;)
It was gamescom 2017, the first time he played this game. Here is the link to his question to add the sprouts in: th-cam.com/video/e826TrFIFFY/w-d-xo.html
Just got this for free from the Epic store so thought I'd watch a quick start guide before wasting my time trying to figure things out myself. Looks good so far. :D
Fantastic tutorial for first time players. I have watch a couple of different tutorials and most go a bit fast and ignore the good information you covered. Thanks!
Dude. Your enthousiasm got to me. That's it. I'm going to play this as soon as part 1 is done. I'll come back to watch the rest once I fail and fail and fail
I have been watching "How to" videos for a century, and this is one of the absolute better ones I have come across. Cudos! I know it's an old video (as of 2021) and all but I really enjoyed this and I learned a lot. Subbed and liked! /Cheers
I got this game for my birthday and almost gave up on it until I watched your video. You are excellent at explaining things. Thanks for making these tutorials :)
New to the channel - came here as I'm in a discord for Cities, and this game came up. I am thankful to have come across this quality vid because a couple of the other "tutorial / starting / how tos" make a lot of assumptions about you (the end user), where as you (the host) go thru every thing and speak on it - which is the way I like to learn. Further, I am watching your vids to see if I even like this game, and for sure, just after this episode you have made me want to purchase it (even though it's free thru xbox game pass as I type this comment). SO, thanks for the good stuff; ill be watching all of your tutorials, and i'll check out what else you do on your channel
Just picked this up on a Black Friday sale on XBox....was skeptical I'd really get into it much....but here I am looking at videos so I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm ok to start off so far, after that, just too much going on to keep up without knowing what I'm doing.
I bought this game because it looked super cool but I stopped because it was kinda daunting and overwhelming. This video series is excellent! It explains everything really well. It would be great if this was in written form.
You do such excellent tutorials. Plus your voice isn't annoying to listen to. You're like having a cool gamer friend let you look over his shoulder as he explains how to get started playing a game. xD
Any time I start a new strategy game, I immediate use check if you’ve made videos like this for them. Thank you for all your consistently helpful and excellent guides!
Not sure if you're familiar with a board game called Tera Forming Mars, but I feel like this is an actual video game replica of that board game. I'm very intrigued by this game and I really appreciate your thorough tutorial on it. Little things like how to navigate the views is important. I've seen some other videos on this game where people just rush through it. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything.
Hey quill18, I just wanted to thank you for making these 2 videos. I found the learning curve to this game to be alittle challenging in the beginning. Thanks again :)
That, and while the grand canyon goes down to about 2km in depth, the Valles Marinires system goes down to about 7km in depth. So you'd almost be able to fit the mount Everest in it. Another feature I think I saw coming by is Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in our solar system, up to roughly 25km in height.
Great video looking forward to the rest of the series. Hope to see if you answer a question I have about deleting elect cables once I don't need them anymore. Right now I can't seem to do so and they are an expense to maintain for non use. So glad you are doing this! ;D
Excited to see this Tutorial play through. I pre-ordered a couple of weeks ago and really looking for the game to be released here in about 10 or so days. I don't pre-order games, with one exception - anything coming out of Paradox. Been looking forward to Surviving Mars for over a year now, so excited to play it.
Great tutorials mate, really explains everything clearly. I'm so glad I watched this because otherwise I would try to play the game for an hour or so only to struggle & frustrate myself. Eventually leading to me just deleting the game from my system...
I bought this game last night and it’s so confusing and overwhelming, but these videos are very helpful! I’m learning so much and starting to build more, thank you!❤️
VERY informative video. I'm just annoyed that I have to watch these tutorials TO LEARN TO PLAY THE GAME! Why didn't they just make an in game tutorial! How many people want to watch 2 hours of tutorials BEFORE THEY PLAY A GAME?! I don't know... uuuugh. Really frustrating. But I do think once I figure it all out I will enjoy the game so I'm gonna push through.
That bothers me as well. I remember when games included a manual, an actual book, in the box when you bought the game. Then they decided to include a manual, but as a PDF file, on the disc. Irritating but at least it was still a game manual. After that they started the "in game" tutorial, which wasn't as nice as the PDF file for reference purposes but still showed you what was needed to play. Now most games have you guessing until someone actually makes a wiki. I just bought "Ark: Survival Evolved" which is a huge game, over 160 Gigs, and no manual. To be fair it does include a survival guide but it does a piss poor job of explaining the game.
God imagine having to learn how to swim, cook or drive a car, like god damn i just want to turn off my brain and mash buttons with my eyes closed... boooooo!
Just bought this game on Xbox. What a great game. Easy to play but hard to master. So much detail have gone in to this game. Really fantastic game... Also great video. I see I understand most of the game already but still nice to learn something new. Thumbs up.
Great Tutorials. Just what I needed in order not to rage quit, very informative. Slowly getting the hang of this game and will get my grandson to play after I get a few hours under my belt. Thanks
Quick question: Are there any structures that are not necessary to place within the radius of a subsurface heater? For examples: the water & oxygen storage tanks.
Quill I am curious as to whether or not you tried starting locations that are legitimate landing sites? I really hope there's some Easter eggs in game, say like finding the Mars Pathfinder
so far you have been the best demonstrator of the game I have seen since they started videos of it in Jan even better the the game makers them selves got the game ordered just waiting till I am able to play (15Mar18) looking forward to more videos from you. CmdrWedding
Better than turning off yiur brain and mashing buttons. The best games are the games that invite you to learn how to play, just like anything worth doing in life
I was going to start playing last night, but I was completely overwhelmed. This video has showed me that it's not quite as overwhelming as I thought. Thanks quill!

And you even got a special sponsored screen from paradox!
Thanks for this Quill, I'm really looking forward to this game and find your video showing me exactly what I'd like to see!
In your comment you mention a roadmap for your 5 part series, is there a timeframe for when these episode will air?
Daily!
Speaks like a true Elon Musk in this comment!
Hi Quill,
It's your fault, you know. I found a deal on this game and am downloading it at this very moment (16 minutes left). I found it at Fanatical for 10 bucks and change.
Did I mention this is all your fault? ;-)
Thanks for the helpful guide,
Richard
Dude you are a freaking NATURAL for tutorials. If they ever make audiobooks of manuals, you should be the voice.
hoi is so boring anyone will become whiny
Good lord, yes!
Wouldn’t be a paradox game if the first thing you did in game wasn’t pause
Or buy a dlc.
Or go straight into running a deficit
It's not a paradox game, they just publish.
@@TraianusImperator Or just pirate it.

"Every thing's easy and then suddenly everyone is dead." My first experience with Surviving Mars in a nut shell!

Well, I think he mentioned it the first time he played it at paradoxcon last year or something and they added it in.
It was gamescom 2017, the first time he played this game. Here is the link to his question to add the sprouts in: th-cam.com/video/e826TrFIFFY/w-d-xo.html
Quility instead of quality this man know's how to explain. Respect and i am looking forward to the next episode!
Just got this for free from the Epic store so thought I'd watch a quick start guide before wasting my time trying to figure things out myself. Looks good so far. :D
same
Yea same, tried figuring things out myself, didn't work, tried tutorials, didn't understand crap. Watching YT tutorials, I'm understanding the game.
The game is pretty amazing too.
Same here. This first beginners tutorial is absolutely great, I am looking forward to continue watching the follow-ups!
@@dogsec3949 the tutorials dont explain SHIT they just say "ok do this now but you dont know why or how it works or what it does" -next tutorial-
I remember when Quill did a passive agressive guide for hoi4. I would like to see him use that style again.
After my glorious first base failure, I'm here watching. ;D
Fantastic tutorial for first time players. I have watch a couple of different tutorials and most go a bit fast and ignore the good information you covered. Thanks!
I love that they added Don't Panic! as a company logo haha. Really excited for the release of this!
So excited you are throwing this out before the game releases. Going to be able to start fresh with a decent idea of what to do. Mad props quill!
Ck2
Eu4
Victoria
HOI
City Skyline
Surviving mars
Stellaris
It's a timeline
Let's add "Rome 2" to this... ;)
Tbh I would love a game that goes from Ck2 to HOI
Rome is Sega, not Paradox.
It's both actually, just referring to 2 different games.
Dude. Your enthousiasm got to me. That's it. I'm going to play this as soon as part 1 is done. I'll come back to watch the rest once I fail and fail and fail

Quill should totally frame this tutorial as a Lecture given by the head of the space department to future Mars colonists.
Thanks Quill for this series.. ive had this game for a month and havent dug into it for lack of understanding the fundamentals...
Quill18 and Paradox sponsorship is the best match.
Just picked this up on a Black Friday sale on XBox....was skeptical I'd really get into it much....but here I am looking at videos so I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm ok to start off so far, after that, just too much going on to keep up without knowing what I'm doing.
Excellent series of tutorial videos! Quill, you have made a fan for life!
I always love that when I get a new paradox game, I rush to quill18 to see if there is a tutorial.
Thanks for this awesome guide.
I really like the concept and the game looks brilliant, so I really don't care whether it's sponsored or not. I just want to know everything about it!
Awesome video! This was the type of video l needed. Simple! Thank you so much!
I bought this game because it looked super cool but I stopped because it was kinda daunting and overwhelming. This video series is excellent! It explains everything really well. It would be great if this was in written form.

does anyone else think the rocket looks kinda like a shark
I think it looks more like an Orca.
It looks like a mixture of both and because of the two hatches or dots that look like eyes I believe that's intended.
or a phallus
@@Aoderic I thinking the same thing lol
Looks like the subnautica rocket
I downloaded this around midnight last night and decided to hop on and “give it a quick try before bed”.
Stayed up playing until 5:45 am lol
I can’t wait for this game. Preordered already. It’s videos like these that keep me going.
Any time I start a new strategy game, I immediate use check if you’ve made videos like this for them. Thank you for all your consistently helpful and excellent guides!
I absolutely LOVE your content mate!!!
What a dude with that many subs doing here
i must admit I thought it was a bit rubbish that there was no basic tutorials, but knew you wouldnt let us down. Thanks.

Excellent video! This will be THE beginners guid for everyone starting wit Surviving Mars!
New to this tipe of games, but your way to explain things is great, love it thank you for your work sir.
I’m so excited for this to come out! I can’t wait to not only watch your let’s play Quill, but also to do my own! Thanks for the video!
damn Quill.. I wasn't planning on getting this game but having you explain it so well has me reconsidering
This guide is a freaking godsend
That canyon is called Valles Marineris (hence the name of the landing site) and it's 4 times as deep and 5 times as long as the grand canyon.
That's what I thought of the instant I saw it.
Quill, you have great guides. Thank you for that!
Dude, just be the de facto Paradox tutorial provider. They need you full-time.
Great video looking forward to the rest of the series. Hope to see if you answer a question I have about deleting elect cables once I don't need them anymore. Right now I can't seem to do so and they are an expense to maintain for non use. So glad you are doing this! ;D
Quill you inspired me to play paradox games and record them and this game looks so great I can’t wait to play it
Thanks for this guide Quill. I can't wait until this game comes out for the general public :)
Great video, quill! Thanks for sharing!

Awesome guide, Quill! I just bought the game thru Humble Monthly and can't wait to get into it. Thanks for making these.
I like this tutorial and the way you deliver it to us. Keep it up!

Yay! I was just asking if you had any content coming from this game!! Thank you!! Enjoyed so much!!
Awesome! Just bought this and am PUMPED to give it a play
Congrats Quill on being the official tutorial. Guess those sweeds are really starting to like you :P
A great and informative tutorial. Ordered the game yesterday
I bought this game last night and it’s so confusing and overwhelming, but these videos are very helpful! I’m learning so much and starting to build more, thank you!❤️
Thanks for this, just got the game and these tutes are great. Bonus points for sounding like one of my heroes, Mike Patton!
Thanks for this, I'm a new player and the whole thing is very intimidating, not sure what I'm doing so your videos, I'm sure, will be really helpful.

I don't think it's location-specific, but in my Let's Play I actually find Curiosity.
That's pretty cool

Great video Quill.
Loved the way you tell stuff bro! ;) first time checkin on this game.
Seriously how does this game not have a tutorial!?
It will be in a DLC .
It is a new trend, that you can't play a game without actually spending time learning it
Ray Wang Took me probably a good 2 hours to understand what I was even remotely doing, I still have so much to learn.
Better than turning off yiur brain and mashing buttons. The best games are the games that invite you to learn how to play, just like anything worth doing in life
New trend ? My first experience with a game with no instructions - thus an abandoned game - was back when I had an Apple IIC.
Hey Quill, thanks for a great intro. I'm all ready to land my first rocket :)
Three cheers for the Brussels Sprouts icon!
Cool video!
