I appreciate the respect you show fish. I can't stand videos where people let a thrashing fish dangle from a hook as it tears an increasingly large hole in its mouth. And then they drop it on the rocks. On its head. You're one of the good ones, Nick.
Up here in the state of Maine, I use rope lures just like I do worm. Whenever fishing a new place I see what there is with worms or rope lures than I figure out what they like best. Rope lures are cheap and easy to make. Can get easily get 25-35 lures out of a 40 foot section of rope. Is almost as cheap as actual worms!
When it said "30 seconds later" I thought for sure a muskie or something was gonna chomp that duck. The "Suicide Duck" and similar lures exists for a reason.
Totally agreed. For some it's the sounds of slots at the casino or the notification tone from your girlfriend. But not many things beat a dose of Dopamine to my brain from the drag on a reel.
Hey this is one of the best fishing videos I’ve seen in a very long time. That was a monster. And then to get one on a home made lure. What a fishing moment. Great one!
Just sat down to have a fea smokes and up pops the notification. What timing!! Can't wait to watch. Loving the longer videos, nick! Peace and love bro ❤
When I started watching this, I was saying to myself "he needs some nylon rope to catch those gar" and you didn't disappoint. They are really tough to catch on anything else. I've let them run with a bait for what seemed like an eternity, only to set the hook and miss. Small treble hooks work pretty good too. Gar are an interesting fish, throwbacks from millions of years ago with very little evolution. They made 'em right the first time. Tough armour, bony head, shaped for strong current, and they aren't stupid either.
They are smart. I met this guy while fishing and he showed me some pictures of a 45 inch spotted gar he caught and the fish was missing his upper jaw almost as far back as his eyes. I could tell it was an old injury based on how it was scarred. This fish found a way to adapt to his injury and based on his belly, it didn't look like it was missing any meals.
@@jameslandon4126 yeah they're as tough as they come. I recall years ago I caught a 4' longnose that I wanted to keep to make Gar balls from. (which are actually very good, fried fish croquettes). I slammed a 12-lb or so rock on his head and thought he was done. About 15 minutes later that tough bastard was trying to get back in the river! There's a reason they've survived for millions of years.
goos job nick. count me as one who thoroughly enjoys watching your vids. editing is top-notch, like a short documentary film. I also LOVE the drone footage to scout ahead. your enthusiasm and will to make a trek (not just by car but by foot as well) make me wanna go out and try some backwoods fishing. unfortunately in a BIG metro city I havent the slightest clue where my "spillways" may be. keep up the great work buddy! I've been watching a ton of your vids lately!
I bet that's not 550 cord. Real 550 cord has 2 metal stands in it. It's the ULTIMATE survival tool. You can break it down into cordage, sewing thread, fishing line, and trapping wire all with the same single strand.

Dude! This video is amazing! I’ve been watching this channel for a few months now and nick really struggles at times but I’ll be damned if he doesn’t continuously put out great content without big fish even. This though was the best of both worlds with his great camera work I felt like I was next time him.
I don't get bothered by TH-camrs who monetize their videos. This is the first time I have ever started getting aggravated by all of the ads just because they kept popping up right when something exciting was happening. It was like someone kept walking in the room and changing the channel at the most pivotal part of my favorite movie. It was comical. Keep the great content coming and thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thanks for another cool video! You know there are haters out there, who hate themselves and their lives so much, that they complain about anything, and everything, including your videos. I say don't watch if you don't like them. I think there are more of us who enjoy them, and appreciate him making them. Keep the videos coming, and thank you for making them.
I truly don't like fishing due to my impatience, but you my friend are AWESOME to watch. Never thought you would have to sneak up on fish. Guess that's why I never caught anything.
he's giving us a wholesome place - he tries hard to never cuss, he isn't scared to make a mistake or show his bandaids, and he does it with great cameras and sweet settings.
Nick, again Great work with the Fishing as your vids show how happy just fishing can make you happy as your excitement for it shows anyone can fish(with practice, makes perfect) fishing, the nice footage of America, and showing us how to make a lure on the fly is Excellent. Me and my daughter watch these videos and she enjoys them as much as I do! Keep up the great work as we have notifications turned on and we love these videos so as to show how fishing can be made great fun but practice makes perfect! And your vids make it somewhat easier and that Gar, wow!, I’m in England(Britain) and we have great spillways too but not fish like yours country’s so it shows what could lurk in the deep spillways we have. Just Keep Up the Great fishing and techniques. Thanks
When you catch big fish like the 11 lb gar you should show it off more. Spending some time on the fish and showing it from different angles would be kinda nice. -Just a thought-
I was just about to comment this! Love the videos but it’s 2 minutes of fighting to catch it then a couple second clip holding it and then a release, we wanna see more of the fish once they’re caught!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Gar love that shallow water and the rope lure is perfect for casting in the weed beds, lily pads and close to shore places that the gar like to hide. Too bad about the wet feet.
I enjoy how he includes plenty of footage of him not catching fish. He like all fisherman exercises patience. Not just a highlight reel of catching monsters all day and making me feel like shit
I just started watching this guy recently....buuuuut with the glasses on and the way the talks he reminds me of post Malone a whole lot! Anyone else agree?
The duck was yelling at you, "You're invading my territory! Get out of here, you giant bird! Yeah, keep walking!" But your new fishing spot was superb! Thanks ducky!
What a cool vid, the fact that u found those big gar at the second spot totally at random was the fishing God's throwing u gift, and making a room lure and hooking up with it is so cool. I loved this video can't wait to show my buddies . As always great video Nick can't wait for the next.
Congratulations man! That was an epic day of fishing. Everything worked out so perfect! Nice job Nick. Keep up the good work. Love these spillway videos! Damn that was cool!
Hey 618 keep on keeping brother it's nice to see all the different species of fish your catching in thoses spillways aka creeks you should make a trip to Ontario and come check our spillways aka creeks anyways I very enjoy watching you cheers and tight lines.
Terrific!!! What a day! I am so jealous as we aren't allowed to go fishing in the UK due to the CV19 thing, which has locked us in our homes for the last 6 - 7 weeks.... I am gnawing my knuckles until we get released back into the wild!
Growing up in Texas we fished the rice canals for massive size gars. We would use the bottom string of a guitar. One end has an eye and run the string thru a frog then make a lasso. It wasn’t the most effective method but for a couple young boys it was a thrill
Dude, you are the man! Personal best 11lb gar on a shoreline made lure from a piece of rope in your backpack? Can’t get much more Mc. Gyver Eagle Scout than that, my friend. Nice work!
Going fishing the handful of times I have, I have tried to take the moss/leafy-ropey plants and making a sort of fly fishing bait but can never say I’ve successfully caught a fish with it... that’s amazing that you did that !!!!
Damn you guys in America are lucky for your diversity of freshwater fish. In southern Western Australia we only have one native freshwater fish that’s worth catching. We have introduced trout that need restocking every year. Or the feral carp and Redfin.
I was fishing at a spillway and I got a 17 pound sturgeon on a ultra light bluegill rod and it got in the current and I chased it 200 yards down the river and caught it with no net. It was on the Wisconsin river if you were wondering.
I appreciate the respect you show fish. I can't stand videos where people let a thrashing fish dangle from a hook as it tears an increasingly large hole in its mouth. And then they drop it on the rocks. On its head. You're one of the good ones, Nick.
That rope lure was quite the veteran move there. Props!
I fished with my Uncle Dee on the Trinity in Texas using unraveled rope!
3/8 nylon rope 6 inches long one end burned and unbraid the rest get gar everytime

"I have a mother" said the baby duck. "I know I do. I will find her. I will. I will. Are you my mother?" Dr Seuss
