I'm Brazilian and I've been learning Russian by myself. I'd been having a hard time understanding the difference between imperfective and perfective verbs, but now, thanks to you, that difference is crystal clear. You are an amazing teacher!

Thank you, Anna. Your explanation goes straight to the point, I mean to the 'tip of the iceberg' of the Russian verbal dual aspects. True, you have читать, прочитать and so on, but you also get прочитывать where the original meaning of 'читать' gets a different shade of meaning. Then you have the verbs of motion and their prefixes - another headache. Not only that, you have verbs like скучать as is Я скучаю or я скучал по тебе, I miss you. I don't think there's a perfect prefix to make it perfective in the past or future. However, you have a perfective which is 'соскучиться' as for ex. Без тебя я очень соскучился - here the 'ся' is added, nevertheless the meaning is different from скучать. Another problem is the verbal conjugation. If you're reading a text and you come up with 'тру' or 'мну' you simply won't be able to find them in the dictionary. To sum it up, Russian is extremely complex and intuitive. Lucky you to have been born Russian!

Thank you for your comment! Yes, certainly, there is more to the topic than can be included into a 16-min video. It's also true that some verbs have several perfective or imperfective variations, or some have none. I believe that this topic is a step-by-step process and one can't get to "прочитывать" and "соскучиться" without understanding the basic concept. But once you get it, you can move to the next step. Eventually, it goes down to a lot of memorization and - in my opinion - a lot of acceptance and consent to just take things the way they are. But again, I totally agree with you that this topic is deep and pretty complex!

This is a topic I've seen several times, and this explanation is by far the best one. You really give a lot of good examples, and in particular I like how you explain the misconception that 'budet' is usually not the right solution to talk about the future.

I am also learning from Russian StarMedia channel's web series & able to understand the dialogues (without using subtitles).
It always seems that the aspects I struggle with the most you explain the best and make them much easier! Definitely gonna have to watch this one a few times! I don’t think russian language is difficult, but I do think you have to respect the rules and you explain them beautifully! Спасибо большое!

Thanks Anna, that was very clear and well explained and I get the idea behind it, although using it correctly is a whole other story! In Spanish they have a very similar distinction in the past by the way, between the pretérito (completed) and imperfecto (habitual, incomplete).

Thanks for the useful lesson. Perfective and imperfective can be complicated. For example: Я видел её вчера. In english and in my language we are using perfective, whereas in russian they use imperfective.
Спасибо, что посмотрели! "Видеть" can actually be a bit tricky. One could say "Я ее увидел" but the meaning is slightly different, like "I managed to see her". I guess, other than that we treat "seeing" as a process, not as a fact.

Good day my favorite teacher Anna, I follow your videos regularly, I found them very useful.
Yet, I have a suggestion or rather a request to make to you.
Please Anna, try to speak in Russian only or, at least, mostly. This helps us to improve our listening and vocabulary in Russian. I have a list of TH-cam teachers who speak only in Russian, or they do not use English but rarely.
I can mention teachers like: Anastasia Semina, Ira, Tatiana Klimova, Stanislav Chernyshov, Maria Petrova, Olga Geral, Max, another Anna, etc.
This monolingual method, to teach Russian through Russian itself, helps the learner to improve his knowledge about the language.
The bilingual method may help the begginers, but not the intermediate nor the advanced students, for this reason, I suggest that you make videos only, or at least mostly, in Russian.

At 2:02 min You clearly say:"...is to add a prefix to the PERFECTIVE(!) verb.". It should be:"...is to add a prefix to the IMPERFECTIVE(!) verb". Backwards rationalising your explanation of the respective meanings of за́втракать
and поза́втракать it becomes clear. For the next 6 minutes you only name the imperfictive form "the word", as in "add a prefix to the word". Only during the example for прочита́ть at 8:40 min do you name this word "the perfective word". Hope it helps.

Hm, one time only, but i get the feeling i have to use the perfective for repeated completed actions as well? Like "I read the book three times" would be Я прочитал эту книгу три раз...and not я читал.

You could use either one in this particular example: "Я читала эту книгу уже три раза" и "Я прочитала эту книгу уже три раза". I personally would use the imperfective, but if you really want to emphasize the completion of this action, you can use the perfective form. It's may sound more expressive, I would say, and sometimes could even express annoyance, like "Gosh, I have already read this book three times, how many more times do I need to do it?!". Not all the time, though, it depends on the context and intonation.

I have a question, if I say
I read a book. Because of the imperfective aspect in the Russian language it means :
I read a book
I'm reading a book
I have been reading a book.
Beсuause if I say
она читала книгу , to me the sentence is already in the past/
she read a book ( and is completed)
So you say the sentence in Russian language
она чситала means ; she has been reading a book and is not a complete process?
I read a book ( present)
Yo leo un libro ( present)
я чситаю книгу ( present)
I read a book ( past )
Yo lei un libro ( past )
я читал нигу
Do you mean in the Russian language you still consider a not complete process because of the imperfective aspect?
In English or Spanish if I say yo lei un libro read a book I'm saying I finished reading the book. Now if didn't finish reading the book I woul say
Yo lei un libro pero no lo termine de leerlo
I read a book but I didn't finish reading
Now if I already completed reading the book
Yo he leido un libro
I have read a book
я прочитап
How do you write in Russian : I have been reading a book and also in past tense I read a book
I have read I understand is прочитал for я тв он
I started to learn Russian language last month and is exactly what I'm doing , learning verb conjugation on all tenses and a few vocabulary just to complete the sentence.
Like you said learning the imperfective and perfective aspect is the key to learn any language.
People I bought a book called 501 Russian Verbs if you are a beginner like me that is a great book.
