Brady, I met you working on a Ben & Jerry's Food Network gig in Burlington. You came up to the crew introduced yourself and mentioned your channel. I've been a follower ever since -- you're incredibly talented and make amazingly descriptive and helpful videos that I would recommend to any aspiring cinematographer. I have learned a lot from you. Thank you dude, keep up the great work!
Ian! I remember this clearly yeah dude y’all are awesome. Im honored to hear that thank you so so much honestly. Shoot me a message dude let’s catch up
Quick formula (sorry I love math ahhaa) Camera color temp - Source "light" color temp = x if x > 0, then you get a cool look if x < 0, then you get a warm look and if x = 0, then you get "perfect" white.
For some reason your videos haven’t popped up for me at all and I have always had notifications on. I’m happy to see your rise this is awesome makes me more motivated to see your growth
Thank you for answering the question I had about CCT v RGB lights and skin tone. I noticed that when I light people with RGB lights it's harder to get their skin tones to look right. When you light yourself and change color temperatures, your scene still looks good; the color in your sweatshirt, your face, and the area around you look as it should and is not a colorful mess. This is really helpful.
Dude, your cinematography is always so beautiful, so well done! It took me forever to figure out color temperature of lights and the color temp of the camera interact with each other. But once you figure it out, it’s a game changer.
Awesome as always, Brady. Btw, the 100K is so close. Interesting coincidence, Studio Binder have just put a video today about colour temperature that features one of your clips (Sarah playing the guitar in front of a fire) as a reference :).
This was amazingly helpful! Thank you! I have a question though! In a shot with daylight spilling in a window, would you want your interior lights to match that source or only ones creating motivated lights of the daylight? Is there a difference in colour temperature of daylight from morning, high noon, and evening or just sunny vs cloudy? What are those ranges? I guess I have lots to play around with before my next bit of talking head footage! Thank you immensely!
Saw you on BTS epic music video done by full-time filmmakers alongside Jake weisler is such a great job done your lighting makes the work pops out you are really a Luma master
I was at a shoot the other day and mixed up camera wb and light wb in my head and I kept telling my friend to lower the white balance on the lights to 3700K because it was too warm in the shot for a moment I was so confused as to why everything was getting warmer. I personally don't have adjustable lights so I'm used to thinking camera white balance first, haha.
@@BradyBessette It's okay, you light amazingly, so who needs numbers, haha. By the way, I starred shooting videos for my personal channel again and this color temperature refresher really helped me pull off a "night" scene by using color temp, so thanks!
I’m glad I watched this video but my first thought was “so what?” I guess, I wanted to know or see more practical ways and examples of why knowing Kelvin temperatures and white balance would be helpful. Maybe I’ll just have to play with my camera’s white balance and my little Aputure MC. Thanks!
4:53 So your wall is gray? What preset for this light in the camera and lights? 7:35 I'm using a translator for my language, but it still doesn't bring it well
Hey Brady love your Chanel! I recently purchased a Godox vl150 with a QR p90 softbox to start lighting my videos, but I believe it only is 5600k any advice on how to change color temp without having to take off your softbox? Thanks i
I always get confused on whether I should be manipulating the WB in camera during a shoot for moody effects or doing it in post with software to change the WB? Is it more sound to always film with standard WB settings for interior/exterior shots rather than to be artistically cranking my WB to change the mood?
A simple practical question for anyone: how to gel a large softbox? (Not one with a built-in gel holder, of course.) The conundrum is that even a full sheet of CTO is not large enough to cover the outer diffusion. Should I put it in inside somehow (clips or tape)? Should I use two outside (is some overlap okay)? Or is a single gel on the outside okay and just live with the light leaking on the sides? I have found so little discussion on this, searching online, that I have the feeling I am only creating a problem for myself. - Dave
Hey Brady, Thanks for all the great videos. Quick question if you are using an RGB light like the Nova P300c, what do you set the white balance to when using colors? Red, green, teal etc...
Does a camera have a fixed temperature for the sensor and any modification is just math derived from for example 5600k daylight? It seems that when we use RAW that it's part of the debayer - if so, wouldn't it be better to gel and/or use appropriate lights with fixed temperatures to achieve the best results? I have seen world level colorists talk of a fixed 5600k in Resolve will keep the DP or cinematographers intended look. I have always had to guess as to WB in software or not. If I make things white, I very well could be ruining the look that was shot.
@@BradyBessette yeah me too. I see youTuber after youTuber that call balancing and then actually change the white balance. For a person like you that might spend hours and hours with temperature and gels - to have a colorist make everything back to neutral doesn't seem right either.
I am gonna share this with anyone that has questions about color temperatures. You Demystified it in the best way possible. Thank you again. Edit: I also wanted to say, I thought I was the only person that thought in that way about things. Like the weather and color temperatures and etc.
HUGE correction: RGB lights are very very different from RGBWW lights. While rgb lights generate "white" by turning on all red green and blue diodes, Rgbww has all red, green, blue, warm white, cool white diodes. They have the benefits of both rgb and cct, and therefore yield some of the most accurate cri and tlci (colour accuracy) scores when compared to most lights. The aputure b7c rgbww bulb that Brady has beside him throughout the whole video is an example of it, and you can change its colours on the app via CCT (kelvin) adjustment or HSI (rgb) adjustment. They are in the most part more accurate than regular LED CCT lights, but come at higher costs. With that said, if you do find an rgb light for video, double check if it's rgb or rgbww. If it's the former, stay away from it as it will make your skin wildly weird on camera as stated in the video.
So you did a whole video on colour temp and didn't bring any gels .. fail. You should have had some gels for example it's still often the easiest fix for a practical light you can't control.

I have NEVER seen a better explanation for Kelvin and color temperature. You explained it so well, thank you!
As many times as I've heard this, it's always nice to hear again. Thanks, man!

Thank you for this Brady. I'm still confused..but less now than before ☺
By the way, saw an insert of your channel on StudioBinder's channel. Movin' on up! haha.
I know isn’t that insane!!!
I love 12K Kelvin, it just looks so cool.
I really have to agree... love the cool tonesssss

oh this is a good question, I'd say try to clothespin or baby clip the gel inside to the spokes of the soft box maybe ?
Great vid, man!! Makes sense
So is it safe to say if you have a very warm light your cameras white balance is adding the right amount of coolness to create a pure white color?
Typically yes, you also can encounter a shift of green/magenta that can skew your temperature as well, but not as drastic
Wow...very helpful! :D ...Hee hee, your ending I can relate to. ;)
hahah thank you so much !

Hello Brady can you make a tutorial for a silluette scene plz?

when it comes to the tech side of things, I am not 100% sure of the "correct" answer to this really! I'd be curious to know
