Hello everyone, this is Grahame and I'm a Brit who has lived in "Happy Haarlem" for thirty years. I married a lovely Dutch lady, worked at the airport, and have now retired. Haarlem is much better than Amsterdam. It's less touristy and quieter, but has fabulous restaurants, bars and hotels. The train can take you to Amsterdam in 20mins and Schiphol Airport is only a 15min drive away. Haarlem really is a must on your travel list. See you there one day!!
In old towns like this, I imagine they are Renovating rather than Constructing. Imagine spending a month in beautiful Haarlem just doing sketches and painting. There are so many subjects, streets, and historic corners and buildings to be transferred onto canvas! My Sis has lived in the 'dam and we also have relatives there, but i've never been myself.... oh shite, there is still sooo much to see and do!! Europe is still so big although i've already been to so many countries. Maybe a Camper would be the answer now, especially as i'm retired.
So many nice sights in Netherlands, yet Noraly spends so long away. Maybe within 10 years time she'll be trundling around the country with kids in a sidecar.
Haarlem is a lovely City, and Holland is largely undiscovered by the Brits, yet is a fabulous country with lovely welcoming people, just don’t tell everyone, as I like this way LOL
