It is not fair that we blaming him, the actor insread of screenwriters and producer. Pierce throughout his era always gave a good to great performance. Man did upheld his part but was let down by the writing and scripts
The Bond producers always give themselves too much credit when it's talent that creates the lighting in the bottle. But it's a paradigm Connery, and Moore proved at the end of their run they both appeared bored, and tired. I didn't see that with Pierce, in fact he is the best thing about Die Another Day
SIDE NOTE: Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) is a criminally underrated film. It wasn't too dark, it hadn't gotten campy yet; it was a great balance. Unfortunately, it was just too ahead of its time. I believe that if it had be released now, given the current political climate, it would be a smash-hit. It remains one of my favorite 007 film
@@joebro391 We sure can disagree, but really, I suggest you rewatch the movie. He was not credible enough as a Bond vilain for me, his interpretation was not original enough, and he didn't look crazy enough for me; he is a great actor, don't get me wrong but this role was not for him. And I do not think he would be relevant today either. Craig vilains were amazing in every way.
@@hervedavidh4117 maybe it's you who needs to rewatch the film. Elliott was a global threat, not just an adversary. Being a good villain does not mean they need to be a physical threat. With that in mind, Greene was an absolute bitch of a villain in QoS, hardly "amazing in every way"
@@joebro391 Hum I wasn't talking about physical threat. Yeah I almost forgot Greene, he was the worst vilain in the worst Craig's Bond movie, my bad. He was so bad I forgot him. Rarely a Bond vilain is a physical threat; My point with Pryce was the acting. His actiong was litteraly bad, not the way his character is written. His acting wasn't good, and I'm a fan of Pryce.
Imo, the problem was definitely not with Brosnan. The man gave it his all, and is one of the main reasons I've watched GoldenEye a countless amount of times. I think the problems with his last three is the writing and the direction (and also being under a new producer). If he was given a different script and direction, I think we could've seen movies on par or even better than GoldenEye, just like with the Craig era. Same thing happened to Dalton, he was the best part with his movies, and it sucks they're hard to watch because they just felt so campy, and I like both campy and gritty Bond films.
Yeah, it’s like this video was written by someone who based their entire reviews off other reviews and scores without considering Brosan’s role within it. He acted as well as one could, and _DaD_ is honestly some pretty harmless fun.
@@electricmaster23 Yeah, I like DaD. It's not at GoldenEye's level, but it's still a lot of fun to watch. Definitely better than some of Craig's films (coughSpectrecough).
@@Leonardoeditor37 That's the truth, actually. Dalton was invited back, but at that point he was Bond for 8 years already and only starred in 2 movies, his original 3 movie contract had expired and they offered him a new 3 movie contract, which would tie him to the role for at least another 5 or 6 years. He said he would do one more, as his 1986 contract stipulated, but not 3, so he left.
Agreed, Dalton was the return to form with a modern, more gritty twist that Bond needed, resurrected in Craig. Guess it was an idea before it’s time, taken away too soon.
Where he may have failed in the films, he ushered in a new generation of Bond fans through the video games. For that, I am extremely grateful. Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, GoldenEye, all great games.
Pierce Brosnan DID breathe new life into the character in GoldenEye, but it wasn’t his fault that his subsequent films became progressively worse. That falls on the shoulders of the producers, writers, and directors. Brosnan’s portrayal of him still stands as one of the best, cheesy writing notwithstanding.
If I'm not mistaken, Brosnan was contractually signed for 4 films, and couldn't back out of DAD regardless of whether he liked the script or not. You could say he had no choice but to go along with the ludicrous filming, or be sued for it. Whether he had the actual power to influence the director or screenwriter to change the script, who knows. In my opinion, he got fired unfairly. He was, and always will be, a terrific Bond for me
@@tylerjsmithers8385 I didn't think so either. I'm not sure if there's any existing interview of him talking honestly what he felt about the film. But I'm not lying when I say I still found the film enjoyable. Sure, it's undoubtedly really ridiculous at times (invisible car, surfing the waves), but it's still 10x better than that awful Quantum of Solace
@@MrRoda8143 I love DAD too! Until we get to the airplane, I find most of DAD to be very fun and enjoyable (cringy dialogue aside)... Btw I still love QOS...
It wasn't Pierce's fault. it's the writers and producers. Even he was dissatisfied with the direction the franchise was going in. As a fan of his since Remington Steele, Goldeneye more than lived up to my expectations of his portrayal.
Pierce Brosnan was THEE!! James Bond. The mannerisms, the charm, he could hold his own in a fight rather believeably & definitely nailed the wit aspect of his character
The writing utterly failed Brosnan, even in his worst films he performed above and beyond. Die Another Day is his worst film but actually has some of Brosnans most interesting character work up top. You can feel elements of what would eventually save the franchise in Casino Royale trying to eke through the absolute nonsense of the plot.
Like how he doesn't get away from the Bad Guy in the opening credits, instead he's thrown into a Korean POW Camp & when he's eventually released & sent back to MI6, Bond has to prove that he's still up to the job.
@@edwinreid8355 Exactly! I remember watching that in theater the first time and thinking “oh wow, they are going to take Bond back to his roots and bring him down to Earth”… and then I watched the rest of it and saw them ACTUALLY & LITERALLY have him windsurf from a laser beam back down to Earth! I severely disappointed. Lol
Plus, Tomorrow Never Dies is one of the series most underrated films & The World Is Not Enough lays the groundwork for all the best aspects of Craig's Era.
Tomorrow Never Dies is my favorite Bond film due to the combination of Michelle Yeoh's badassery, David Arnold's excellent score, the villain's insane plan that became more relevant over time, the remote-controlled car, the handcuffed motorcycle chase, etc... It just flows for me from beginning to end.
Great comment! 100% Agree 👌👍👏Tomorrow Never Dies also for the characters - Elliott Carver Paris Carver Dr. Kaufman Stamper Wai Lin Henry Gupta M Q And Brosnan as Bond above all ♥️
My favorite Bond. The franchise was on life support when Goldeneye came out. Everyone immediately accepted him and his films were all hits. It’s easy to criticize now, but at the time he Was Bond.
Gotta change that title. Brosnan was the perfect Bond, the same way Cavill was the perfect Superman. Writers were the culprit of the way they had to play the characters.
Don’t forget that much as many of us deeply dislike Die Another Day, it was actually a massive worldwide hit at the time. None of those films flopped. There was no reason for the public to reject Brosnan if the series had done a course correction with him still attached.
Exactly. As much as those who hate the "goofy" Bond, they ignore the fact that Moonraker was a huge box office success and all it took to settle everything down was a more grounded next film with FYEO. The same could have easily happened with Brosnan. But rumor has it, Barbara had already had her sights set on Craig years before she fired Brosnan and was looking for an excuse to replace him with her crush. She even said in recent interviews, "it was always gonna be him" in regards to Craig being Brosnan's successor.
@@JDoe-gf5oz yep. Even though I blame Craig for neutering, Jason Bournifying, and killing off Bond, none of it would have happened without Barbara's approval or her twisting his arm to play him when he never wanted to and he was a huge miscast to begin with. On the contrary, Brosnan wanted Bond to be darker and maintain the tone of Goldeneye in all his movies after that and she wouldn't listen to him.
Bronan is my favorite Bond. Out of all the actors he was perfect at balancing dark and gritty with dropping one liners without either feeling awkward. He also LOOKS like Bond.
I think one of the reasons Goldeneye is so special, is that it's one of the few Bond films post Connery that wasn't chasing a fad. "Star Wars is popular, let's make Moonraker. Computers are a thing, let's make A View to a Kill. People love Marvel movies, let's lazily try to connect the Craig films like a shared universe via Spectre". Goldeneye wasn't trying to do anything but be a good Bond film.
His movies are still more fun, entertaining and enjoyable than most of the Daniel craig ones. They are maybe cheesy or dated but always so fun with constant action and some charismatic villains
I think you forgot that what really changed the tone along with the whole "reboot" was that the Bourne Movies' grittiness was a major factor at how the folks thought about re imagining Bond.
I'd point to The World Is Not Enough: not great but def good. It's proof the series was looking to go down a darker & more character-driven path...years before Bourne, Nolan's Batman.
And even if you did like Die Another Day, a sequel couldn't/shouldn't be even more OTT than that, they had to go more grounded than that so might as well get new actor.
@@stephenwise ikr it's one film I used to live vicariously through. The people who badmouth it only do so because some dipshit ringleader of theirs told them to.
It had potential, the idea was great. The script however was just awful. I just don't get why, after Goldeneye, they decided to make this turn into the ridiculous campy style in the Roger More way. Especially during the 90's, where it was simply so obsolete. When Roger did it, it was at least a bit more original, and fitting. With the Brosnan movies it felt uninspiring, and cheap. Plus it was also the time of the CGI, that has started to spread in the 90's. Which also led into the situation, that made Tamahori go "all in" with the final Brosnan movie, because Pandora's box already has been opened at this point widely anyway. The suspense aspect was simply gone. In general, the overall quality of the Bond movies started to fade away during the time of the Brosnan movies, unfortunately. For a lot of reasons (because of management and producers mainly).
Brosnan was Bond for me. Too smooth. I had no idea of prior casting as a child and he killed that role. The writing became eventually worse, I even forgot that Die Another Day existed but it was in no way his fault. He worked with what he got. Damn shame.
One of the best things about the Bond franchise is that no matter how outlandish or ridiculous, the producers will always right the ship for the next Bond movie. One title (and one actor) has never killed this series. And in regards to Die Another Day not being "beloved. At all." it would gross over 431 million worldwide. That's over 700 million adjusted for today's inflation. The biggest box office of the Brosnan era. Love or hated, if it "killed the franchise" the corpse surely had money stuffed in its pockets.
It's weird how people let outside factors affect their view of a movie's success or quality. For years OHMSS and LTK were considered "bad" merely because the actors had short runs, and somehow Dalton was blamed for killing the franchise even though they stopped making movies because of a dispute with McClory.
@@JDoe-gf5oz Dalton probably would have been more embraced/accepted if his films had come a little later, like the first one in 1989-1991, rather than right after Moore.
Brosnan did the best with what he was given. He was a great Bond who unfortunately had inconsistent and rushed scripts that didn't allow him to take the character as far as he wanted to.
I feel Pierce Brosnan should have done a Fifth Final movie more similar to For Your Eyes Only which was down-to-earth and which didn't had ridiculous gadget. Maybe Goldeneye Story Writer should have done the script for his fifth movie Music composer should have been Erric Serra
Theme song's definitely catchy and memorable since its sung by Tina Turner, not that the other films in the franchise aren't catchy and memorable, but this one's so easy to just sing a long to whenever it comes up.
Pierce Brosnan with out question represented James Bond in a very dignified manner. He helped revived the series and was a very good James Bond. Remember Pierce was just coming off his Remington Steele fame and was young and handsome and could do action and drama which the character always need to be. The years he spent playing the character was very good and I remember they were always very popular in the theaters also. Let´s give respect where respect it due. Whoever was chosen after him had to live up to big standards and Daniel Craig who nobody even wanted in the role set the bar even higher so it will be the same now that he is finished with his contract.
Brosnan LOOKED the role perfectly, he just had the misfortune of being in movies with rubbish scripts as they went along. *Goldeneye* remains a favorite for me though, and one of the best action flicks of the 90s.
He did what was required and gave solid performances always. His Bond perfectly blended the charm with the dangerous unlike any others imo. I think the writers tried too hard which led to the series not being quite as good. Plus his critics always seem to have very ridiculous complaints e.g. "he was too good-looking, it was distracting" wtf?
Goldeneye is a classic, and Tomorrow never dies and The World is not enough are SO UNDERRATED. Tomorrow never dies is one of the most rewatchable Bond movies for me, and The World is not enogh has a fantastic plot. That being said, Brosnan was always flawless in the role. Even in Die another day, that I enjoy as a guilty pleasure. He was so cool in that movie despite many cheesy lines he had to say. I love his ternure so much.
@@Richard_Nickerson By who? It's a matter of opinions. And it changes during the years. Lazenby's movie is much more beloved now than 10 years ago, for example. Sometimes we want a more serious approach, sometimes we want a more fun one.
I grew up with the Brosnan films, loved them! Especially the first and the last ones! But I always loved watching all the old ones on spike tv’s 13 days of 007!
Die Another Day, was my first Bond movie, I remember ir was so great, I was 7 years old with my father, I don't know if it is nostalgia but for me was so good, and now that I have grown up I see it and enjoy it even more now. It's a great movie, doesn't need to be so realistic to be good.
Also one of my favorite Bond movies "Die Another day" along with "Tomoro Never Dies" And that chemistry between Brosnan and Halle Berry and also with Michelle Yeoh. Beautiful Bond couples I don't know
I feel Lee Tamahori(Director of Die Another Day) should direct BOND 26. I want James Bond movie to give more emphasis for Gadgets, Tongue-In-Cheek Humor and have Over-The-Top Escapism
In fairness I would blame the writers, executives, and directors before Pierce, who was always game even in the bad ones. It really seemed like they didn't know what to do with him after GoldenEye, and decided to go the campy route again when having a Craig-esque arc would have worked far better
And I feel like even Die Another Day probably worked in its original conception which was probably all the captured by NK stuff and trying to be gritty again until they jammed in the pointless Cuba detour, the stupid ice hotel, the gd Vanquish, terrible villains and third act, and so, so many references to past films
@@positivetakes5592 Do you feel Pierce Brosnan should have gotten a Fifth and Final Movie similar to For Your Eyes Only after the Moonraker style Die Another Day?
GoldenEye oddly works well as introduction and also or more so conclusion, pretty stand-alone. The lesser films and villains were lesser but probably any would be after Alec and Xenia.
I think it is a misjudgment to label Brosnan as the person who killed the franchise. Poor writing and plot lines and other characters are at fault. Brosnan shows great maturity and growth throughout his tenure. The rest of the film is garbage but Brosnan does deliver some great performances in Die Another Day, which contrasts with how he is in Goldeneye (one of the all time greats!). I believe he has done the best he can with the material given to him.
Timothy Dalton and Pierce have always been the best bonds. The greatest things of their two eras was that their movies where just grounded enough to take seriously, but just campy enough to also have fun with. That’s what Bond should always be
I want Lee Tamahori (Director of Die Another Day) back for BOND 26. I want BOND 26 to bring back the fun, gadgets and Over-The-Top Escapism back to James Bond franchise which were missing during the Daniel Craig era. His movies are Dark and Gritty, realistic and don't give importance to Gadgets.

Pierce was truly under utilized after Goldeneye. His entire Bond career was in turmoil from his inception due to the issues with his Remington Steele contract. His acting never really changed despite writers direction and stories, and certain scenes in each film show he was still Goldeneye Bond, just locked behind Hollywood bureaucracy. It seems almost every actor who played Bond had to deal with some heavy mistreatment and criticism, but to this day Goldeneye is consistently a top 5 bond, and Pierce will always be the iconic version I strived to be as a boy, and emulate today as a man...albeit with more witicism and significantly less hair
Yes, I feel Pierce Brosnan should have gotten a Fifth and Final Movie similar to For Your Eyes Only a Down-to-earth approach movie without emphasis for Gadgets. Maybe a Violent Movie
Would be cool to see a spinoff of an older bond played by brosnan that takes place long after his official spying years and is connected more to the original canon just for fun
Completely unfair to blame all this on Brosnan. The tone of this video sounds like Pierce is to blame, when, in fact, I'd argue Die Another Day is one of his better performances in the role, even if it is the worst of the 4. He's absolutely confident in the role at this point and his range when it comes to being a vulnerable man trying to rise from the ashes was fantastic
He portrays the quintessential Bond characteristics the best, in my opinion. His air of confidence, suaveness, etc. Tragically the move plots ruined this opportunity.
So Pierce with Goldeneye and I agree, that was one of my favorite bond films, then came die snother day.....and makes me want to put nightfire after even if it's just a game, i'd rather let that be the last Pierce Brosnan bond movie
Pierce Brosnan was supposed to play James Bond in "The Living Daylights" instead of Timothy Dalton! Brosnan was on the producers radar when he visited the set of "For Your Eyes Only" (where his first wife Cassandra Harris was a Bond girl) and then "Remington Steele" raised Brosnan's profile. In 1986, NBC cancelled "Remington Steele" and Brosnan was one of the top contenders for Bond and got the role. When news of the casting leaked, interest in "Remington Steele" surged causing NBC to renew the series (a few days before announcement of Brosnan as Bond). Because of that, Brosnan was put back under contract for the show and Albert R. Broccoli withdrew the offer (because he didn't want James Bond to be associated to the character of Remington Steele) and cast Timothy Dalton instead.
@@JDoe-gf5oz Yeah pretty much. I never really got the appeal of Dalton. I guess I really liked Bronson when he started to become his own Bond instead of banking off someone else.
I actually like all four Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies. I enjoyed all of them. I know that Die Another Day had negative reviews and bad reception which is considered the worst one, but I still like the movie quite a bit. It’s a fun movie to watch and enjoy. It’s probably my favorite alongside Goldeneye and the World is Not Enough which are two fantastic movies. Tomorrow Never Dies is a great movie also.
Yes, especially the First Half of Die Another Day was top notch with the Dark and Gritty Tone, potraying James Bond being Vulnerable, abandoned by MI6 and going rogue. If Lee Tamahori had maintened this tone for the 2nd half I feel Die Another Day would have been a way more better movie
Pierce was a fine Bond, the movies just fell apart around him. For what it's worth, I consider Tomorrow Never Dies a bit of an underrated dark horse in the series, and Die Another Day is at least enjoyable for how totally bonkers it is - it's kind of Moonraker for the new millennium.
Here's the screenwriters during the Brosnan's Bond era. - "GoldenEye": - Screenplay by Jeffrey Caine and Bruce Feirstein; Story by Michael France Michael France wrote the first draft, then Jeffrey Caine was brought in to rewrite it, after that Bruce Feirstein was also brought in. Kevin Wade (acting as a ghostwriter) helped polish the script. - "Tomorrow Never Dies": - Written by Bruce Feirstein A lot of writers were considered before Bruce Fierstein was chosen. His script was rewritten by other writers before being handed back to him to polish it, but he's listed as the sole screenwriter. - "The World Is Not Enough": - Screenplay by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade, and Bruce Feirstein; Story by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade This is where screenwriter duo Neal Purvis and Robert Wade enter the Bond universe. Bruce Feirstein was also brought in to help add/polish the script. - "Die Another Day": - Written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade This is the only Bond film were Purvis & Wade are the only screenwriters! - After that, during the Daniel Craig era, other writer(s) were brought in to help finish/polish the script.
For BOND 26 I wish Martin Campbell would be the director Screenplay by Drew Pearce, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade Story by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade Music by Erric Serra
Pierce was one of the best bonds, it's unfortunate that the wiring wasn't good enough. Goldeneye is still my favorite but I loved tomorrow never dies. The others were unfortunately forgettable, hopefully the new bond will lean more towards gritty realism then goofy.
I hope BOND 26 would bring back the fun, gadgets and Over-The-Top Escapism back to James Bond franchise. Not expecting another Daniel Craig style movie again. It should be similar to Die Another Day and Moonraker.
Don't care what anyone says but Dalton was a badass Bond who brought toughness back into the franchise. Licence to Kill is one of my favourite of the lot
The World is Enough may have some flaws but you can't not acknowledge than it also features the first female main villain of the franchise. And despite being a pretty traditional villain who lets the henchmen do the job, Elektra is still a very interesting villain.
I actually think Elektra is one of the best villains in the entire series, she has a really interesting backstory, and her romance with Bond gives them a very different relationship compared to most of the other villains
"I never miss" is one of my all time favorite Bond one-liners. A double-meaning that isn't an outright pun, ice cold, but the recipient had deserved it by that point.
Man the Brosnan era, that's my childhood, my first movie was Goldeneye, I played the game a lot at my grandma's house since my uncle had a N64, and I played so much I though the movie was an adaptation, but still loved Goldeneye. I think tomorrow never dies is really great, and watching it in the early 2000's on reruns and seeing the villain as this Rupert Murdoc with a Steve Jobs flair, a tech/media mogul felt like the real 21st century villain, and the martial arts mixture was good as well, The World is not Enough tough, great videogame, superb theme song, mid movie. Now, Die Another Day, it was my first Bond I saw in theaters and as a kid, it blows your mind, I really love it, I think this and The Phantom Menace are my guilty pleasure movies, because they really make me reconnect with my inner child, bombastic set pieces, great production value, and more cheese than those movie theater nachos, I tell you, I just love it, but just like its theme song by Madonna, Die Another Day it's overall a banger, but not the best for James Bond.
He didn’t kill the franchise, he simply saved it and brought in a younger audience. Die Another Day is great in my opinion despite the tsunami kite surfing scene. As much as I like Craig there would be more of an argument that he killed the franchise vs Brosnan. Craig wanted to kill off Bond when he got the part for Casino Royale which happens to be my favorite Bond film.

Let's not forget that if Brosnan could have gotten out of his "Remington Steele" contract, or been able to shoot on hiatus from the series, there may not have been a Dalton era at all. The films themselves went off the rails, but until Craig, Brosnan was the #2 Bond in history after Connery. Craig surpassed him and knocked him down to third, but he had all of the attributes you wanted to see in the character.
While I still think Timothy Dalton deserved another film, I can't really imagine Goldeneye with him on it, and if he was allowed a third film, Goldeneye as we know it would've probably not happened.
Pierce Brosnan is overdue for a more consistent autumn career phase. I can see him eventually giving a performance that contends for Best Supporting Actor mentions, like Sean Connery did.
@@JDoe-gf5oz Dang, Pierce Brosnan is already 70, whereas Sean Connery was still in his late 50s when he gave his Oscar-winning supporting turn in _The Untouchables._ Yeah, I get what you mean.

I don't know about anyone else but to me the Austin Powers movies played a big role in my changed perception of the Bond movies back then. My and my friends actually watched Austin Powers 2 on DVD the day before we went to watch Die Another Day. We couldn't take anything serious.
Bronson was a good Bond. Goldeneye was one of the best in the franchise and Tomorrow Never Dies and World is not Enough (video game is a hidden gem), we’re decent. The writers and studio really gave us the dud of Die Another Day.

The world is not enough is my favorite bond movie as it was my first to see in the movie theater as a kid. Great memories. Also, I found Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies quite good too. The „Die another day“ they messed up big time, though.
I wish people would stop saying things like "they killed the series". Was Die Another Day a masterpiece? No. But it was still at the time relatively well received, and was the highest ever grossing Bond movie at that point. They needed a shift in the series, but it was so far from a dead series.
One could also argue that the quality of the theme songs suffered the same rate of decline throughout the Brosnan era, as well. Tina Turner's contribution to Goldeneye is, in my opinion, one of the very best. Whereas the same cannot be said about whatever it was Madonna tried to do with Die Another Day's theme song.
@@ThomasTiernan You're high, son. A View To A Kill, The Living Daylights, License To Kill, Goldeneye, even Tomorrow Never Dies are all great. TWINE is a little bland, and Madonna's song was just noise.
Having directly experienced the Remington Steele days as a ritual with my Mom. You totally left out that the last couple of seasons of Remington Steele was basically Piece's attempt at "proving" he was the next 007. Which is exactly why they went a different way. In the beginning I was a a supporter of Pierce as the obvious choice .... in the end ... I preferred Timothy Dalton.
While I didn't care about the Brosnan (only watched two of the four), it's obvious Brosnan was one of the few right decisions. He doesn't dictate production or the script, but he was a damn good Bond in sub-par movies. Personally I was a fan of the Timothy Dalton movies and their more gritty approach. License to Kill was my favorite until the Craig era.
Do you think Timothy Dalton should have done For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy and A View To A Kill? If he had done this following movies would they be better
Could Pierce Brosnan do one more Bond movie? Maybe Pierce could be a supporting actor? I have always wanted to see more than one of our Bonds on screen, at a time.
“Killing” the franchise can’t really be on Brosnan. After all, the producers and director set the story and tone. That said, I preferred Dalton’s grittier 007, especially in License to Kill, and I thought Brosnan was just a return to Moore, just not as campy. So I was happy to see the producers switch back to a gritty Bond with Craig.
It’s incredibly ironic that Nerdstalgic has taken this position given he was glowing about Craig, who not only IS the Bond that died, but reportedly had played an active role in killing him off.
Hearing the plot descriptions, I’m wondering if we watched the same films. Because someone kind of forgot to mention the big twists in the latter two which, especially in The World is Not Enough gave it a boost. Because Renard isn’t the main villain by any means!
Maybe I have a soft spot for TND, as it's my first Bond movie I saw in theaters and my introduction do Michelle Yeoh, but I loved it. The action and the gadgets are great and I enjoyed Pryce hamming it up as Carver as a villain that's probably gotten more believable as time went on. The henchman Stamper is physically imposing but kind of forgettable and I guess you could say the movie feels like just another Bond romp rather than something more special like Goldeneye, but I think it's still enjoyable.
Some perspective, the world read about Bronsan training to take on Bond role years before his debut. When Remington Steele kept him from making the leap, fans waited. When it finally happened, fans were curious to turn out for Goldeneye to see him finally in the role he was bound to play.
Goldeneye was definitely my favorite Bond film of the Brosnan era. Tomorrow never dies, The world is not enough, and Die Another day didn't have that same appeal Goldeneye had, I'm not saying they were bad movies, I thought they were good, but definitely toned down. When Goldeneye was written they obviously had Timothy Dalton in mind for the role which would explain why Pierce Brosnan's Bond had a completely different personality in that movie compared to the films following, had Brosnan portrayed the character the way he did in Goldeneye in the rest of his Bond films they would have been a lot better.
Great video guys thanks for your honest thoughts on pierce's performance as 007 his movies 🎬 were great in their day sure they were camp 😅and over the top but bond movies are meant to be over the top, and been an Irishman such as myself I have to like pierce 😅😊
It is not fair that we blaming him, the actor insread of screenwriters and producer. Pierce throughout his era always gave a good to great performance. Man did upheld his part but was let down by the writing and scripts
Bingo!
Yeh I agree
Yep - Golden Eye was a fresh take on the franchise - then it went back to 'formula' which was too bad.
The Bond producers always give themselves too much credit when it's talent that creates the lighting in the bottle. But it's a paradigm Connery, and Moore proved at the end of their run they both appeared bored, and tired. I didn't see that with Pierce, in fact he is the best thing about Die Another Day
He claims he killed it but didn’t really say anything about him specifically killing it, sounds more like mediocre villains killed it
Brosnan didn't kill Bond the writers did...
With No Time To Die
@robertodefelice932 : Nonsense: Brosnan is far more James Bond than Daniel Craig's Woke Bond will ever be!
Agreed. Writing was suspect after goldeneye, then got worse turning the craig era into a soap opera and shoehorning in blofeld as the cause of it all
@robertodefelice932 : To each his own, Brosnan = Bond, James Bond. Daniel is Woke, James Woke, end of discourse.
@robertodefelice932 indeed: Pierce👍Daniel👎
I Agree, but Jonathan Pryce is one of the worst Bond vilains ever. I 'think he is the sole weak point of the movie.
@@hervedavidh4117 I disagree. I love his campy performance. I also think his character was way ahead of its time and is more relevant now than ever
With that in mind, Greene was an absolute bitch of a villain in QoS, hardly "amazing in every way"
@@joebro391
Hum I wasn't talking about physical threat.
I can’t blame Brosnan. The producers and directors determine how the scripts are written.
Hello dear amazing fan how are you doing
Imo, the problem was definitely not with Brosnan. The man gave it his all, and is one of the main reasons I've watched GoldenEye a countless amount of times. I think the problems with his last three is the writing and the direction (and also being under a new producer). If he was given a different script and direction, I think we could've seen movies on par or even better than GoldenEye, just like with the Craig era.
Same thing happened to Dalton, he was the best part with his movies, and it sucks they're hard to watch because they just felt so campy, and I like both campy and gritty Bond films.
Myth: the third 007 film starred by Timothy Dalton would have been the first one starred by Pierce Brosnan - Goldeneye.
The Craig films are worse than the Brosnan films...
Timothy Dalton deserved another film. Those movies are totally underappreciated
I definitely want more "bloodthirsty and pyro crazy" Bond
He was trying to do the “back to the Fleming roots” idea before the producers decided to run with it in *Casino Royale*.
they could still do "old Bond" but not like NSNA
Agreed, Dalton was the return to form with a modern, more gritty twist that Bond needed, resurrected in Craig. Guess it was an idea before it’s time, taken away too soon.
Dalton is the most accurate Bond casting.
Where he may have failed in the films, he ushered in a new generation of Bond fans through the video games. For that, I am extremely grateful. Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, GoldenEye, all great games.
Agent Under Fire also.
And From Russia with Love only exists because of the excellent bones of EoN
Yes, it does reveal the lowering standards that Bonds are now judged by their sheer marketability.
About to say the same thing.

Cheesy writing is a staple of the Bond franchise and is NOT a bad thing
It's impossible to overstate just how much the second half of Die Another Day damaged Brosnan's legacy. Ashame and unfair.
@@strikerbowls791 there is a point of diminishing returns on the cheesiness

Barbie Broccoli ruined the franchise, and goldeneye was the last movie with her father's involvement.
He was, and always will be, a terrific Bond for me
I don't believe he had as much influence as Daniel Craig did... He, like the other actors in DAD, had to go along with the director's vision
@@tylerjsmithers8385 I didn't think so either. I'm not sure if there's any existing interview of him talking honestly what he felt about the film.
Brosnan didn't kill it, the studios did. He didn't write the script, he only spoke the lines given.
Absolutely right,Daniel Craig did have his Bond killed, it was his condition for playing Bond one more time in No Time To Die
they expected him to talk, we expected them to die
The writing utterly failed Brosnan, even in his worst films he performed above and beyond. Die Another Day is his worst film but actually has some of Brosnans most interesting character work up top. You can feel elements of what would eventually save the franchise in Casino Royale trying to eke through the absolute nonsense of the plot.
Like how he doesn't get away from the Bad Guy in the opening credits, instead he's thrown into a Korean POW Camp & when he's eventually released & sent back to MI6, Bond has to prove that he's still up to the job.
@@edwinreid8355 Exactly! My favorite Bond. The franchise was on life support when Goldeneye came out. Everyone immediately accepted him and his films were all hits. It’s easy to criticize now, but at the time he Was Bond.
Best Bond ever
idgaf what anybody says, he fit the character more than any other actor ever has
Gotta change that title. Brosnan was the perfect Bond, the same way Cavill was the perfect Superman. Writers were the culprit of the way they had to play the characters.
Writers have little to no power in Hollywood (unles they are writer/directors of course) and can't make actors do anything.
@@Carabas72 Writers wrote the awful and cheesy stories that sunk the Brosnan era.
@@imnotsqiddy
What writers put in a script and what you see on screen is not necessarily similar.
Don’t forget that much as many of us deeply dislike Die Another Day, it was actually a massive worldwide hit at the time. None of those films flopped. There was no reason for the public to reject Brosnan if the series had done a course correction with him still attached.
If he had done a Fifth and Final movie would the movie be similar to the tone of FYEO and who should have been the appropriate director for that
@@jakepearlman6940 If anything the video should be about Barbara since she seems to be the one calling all the shots.

Surely, Pierce Brosnan deserved a FYEO esque movie as his Fifth and Final in James Bond franchise
Best Bond ever
I think one of the reasons Goldeneye is so special, is that it's one of the few Bond films post Connery that wasn't chasing a fad. "Star Wars is popular, let's make Moonraker. Computers are a thing, let's make A View to a Kill. People love Marvel movies, let's lazily try to connect the Craig films like a shared universe via Spectre". Goldeneye wasn't trying to do anything but be a good Bond film.
Good points. But what fad would you say the living daylights was chasing? I can't think of any for that one.
Same with casino royale
His movies are still more fun, entertaining and enjoyable than most of the Daniel craig ones. They are maybe cheesy or dated but always so fun with constant action and some charismatic villains

I'd point to The World Is Not Enough: not great but def good. It's proof the series was looking to go down a darker & more character-driven path...years before Bourne, Nolan's Batman.
Yes, Daniel Craig movies were inspired from The Dark Knight and Jason Bourne

@@gregorsamsa2271 what are you talking about? Tomorrow never dies is a great action movie. Saying it’s roger more campy makes no freaking sense.

He should have done a Fifth and Final movie similar to For Your Eyes Only a Down-to-earth approach movie without emphasis for Gadgets.
True.
Brosnan was born to play Bond he can't be blamed for the CGI and shakey camera style that ruining Die another Day
One of the best things about the Bond franchise is that no matter how outlandish or ridiculous, the producers will always right the ship for the next Bond movie.

For someone who grew up in the 90s, Bosnan will always be the Bond. That’s the face I will think of every time I think about James Bond

This is the only Bond film were Purvis & Wade are the only screenwriters! - After that, during the Daniel Craig era, other writer(s) were brought in to help finish/polish the script.
For BOND 26 I wish
Martin Campbell would be the director
Screenplay by Drew Pearce, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade
Story by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade
Music by Erric Serra
Yes, I feel Timothy Dalton should have debuted with For Your Eyes Only which would have been a Solid Debut.
Brosnan did a fantastic job in all the films he was in. It was the writers and directors that made the mistakes.
He deserved a Fifth and Final Movie right after Die Another Day
Best Bond ever
I still say Tomorrow Never Dies is underrated.
The best Bond film for me
Agree. Loved the action scenes and was ahead of it's time also..
@@christianwise637 And He shot her COLD, Unexpected !
I feel Lee Tamahori should be the director of BOND 26.
@@vishalnarayanasamy8767 that would be awesome!
@@anythingandeverythingwithjp If Lee Tamahori ends up as the director of BOND 26 who should be the music composer and Heroine. Please tell me your opinion

Although Daniel had the best 007 films and Connery was the original, when I think of James Bond I think of Brosnan. He looked and sounded like what James Bond was supposed to look and sound like. Its a shame he wasn't given better films to be in.
Should Pierce Brosnan have done a Fifth and Final movie?
Pierce Brosnan is the best Bond of them all in my opinion

Brosnan doing Casino Royale would have been great in its own way.
that line "for England, James? No. For me." gives me chills
Best line ever.
If the lawsuit didn't happen he probably would have still been Bond in '95, maybe even in '97 given the way they hold on to actors for way too long.
Pierce Brosnan is overdue for a more consistent autumn career phase. I can see him eventually giving a performance that contends for Best Supporting Actor mentions, like Sean Connery did.
Dude's pretty old and crusty now. Around the time of the shutdown he did a live commentary for Goldeneye and was starting to look elderly.
@@JDoe-gf5oz Dang, Pierce Brosnan is already 70, whereas Sean Connery was still in his late 50s when he gave his Oscar-winning supporting turn in _The Untouchables._
Yeah, I get what you mean.
And what’s sad is that the games that featured Pierce’s likeness were spectacular. I never played it, but Everything or Nothing was a great story. I played Nightfire and boy, that would have been an AMAZING movie.
I don't know about anyone else but to me the Austin Powers movies played a big role in my changed perception of the Bond movies back then. My and my friends actually watched Austin Powers 2 on DVD the day before we went to watch Die Another Day. We couldn't take anything serious.
Bond franchise is still alive. It's not dead if it is still relevant today 2023. People are still liking it and studios are still making money.
Bronson was a good Bond. Goldeneye was one of the best in the franchise and Tomorrow Never Dies and World is not Enough (video game is a hidden gem), we’re decent. The writers and studio really gave us the dud of Die Another Day.
I wish they'd watched some of Calvin Dyson's videos on this topic before making factual errors, but I appreciate the effort.
I can't believe Timothy Dalton only has 2 movies, he was great I really love those movies, feel a bit more of a slow burn and they are not afraid of being taken seriously, and those theme song, wow, I still got 'em on my iPod.
I feel EON Productions should have narrated him the full script of FYEO maybe Timothy Dalton would have agreed to enter the James Bond franchise earlier, because after watching Moonraker he felt the James Bond movies were becoming Over-The-Top. He was interested in a Down-to-earth approach movie
Given that the fifth film would have taken place in the 1950s, been based on Casino Royale and directed by Tarantino…yes it would have worked. Pierce Bronson was the perfect casting choice. There will never be another like him.
Tomorrow Never Dies is actually my favorite Bond film that I've seen so far. I was hoping the Michelle Yeoh character would get her own spin-off
It definately had the best car out of all the films
@Erik Carlson - It's Michelle YEOH.

@@thegreypath1777 Goldeneye is one of the best bond films ever. Die another day is a abomination. The ones in between range in between in sequential order. Pretty self explanatory
I'm your fan not necessarily a bond fan I'm always curious about your good points in the movies that changed or influenced the world and yourself I really apriciate your point and gives me a appetite for rewatching movies such as these ones
The world is not enough is my favorite bond movie as it was my first to see in the movie theater as a kid. Great memories. Also, I found Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies quite good too. The „Die another day“ they messed up big time, though.
Box market wise, he totally didn’t kill Bond franchise
Die another Day is my absolute favorite brosnan Bond movie
A true guilty pleasure to many 🎉
I wish people would stop saying things like "they killed the series".
I hope Erric Serra would be the music composer for BOND 26
Every theme song between All Time High and You Know My Name is terrible and forgettable. That hurts.
@@vishalnarayanasamy8767 So he can blacklist someone else for upstaging him?
@@ThomasTiernan You're high, son. A View To A Kill, The Living Daylights, License To Kill, Goldeneye, even Tomorrow Never Dies are all great. TWINE is a little bland, and Madonna's song was just noise.
I can't wait for The World Is Not Enough to have its' true renaissance. I love that movie.
BTW, still looking for a double like button from TH-cam ... your channel deserves it!
PB could have been a excellent 007 1985 to 1995 era. Big $$$ bold films but it never came about.
TMND and WND are 2 under-rated gems. No question.
It definately felt like a big event. It had the best car in the whole series too. And the best car chase scene imo
Some perspective, the world read about Bronsan training to take on Bond role years before his debut. When Remington Steele kept him from making the leap, fans waited. When it finally happened, fans were curious to turn out for Goldeneye to see him finally in the role he was bound to play.
Pierce was my favorite Bond with Roger and Sean tied in second place. Never saw any other Bond films after Pierce left.
Pierce Brosnan is the most beautiful James Bond.
