This is a very sad story. Mental illness is real to me because of my son. However, she didn’t commit suicide because she purchased a gun, she committed suicide because of her illness.

Nothing here is anti gun, why be so reactionary where it isn't necessary? We have some issues with gun laws in this country, saying that isn't anti gun. I just feel like people are so quick to give a knee jerk reaction over the tiniest criticism of any kind of gun policy

To those with a loved one who commits suicide are easy to blame themselves, but if it wasn’t guns it would have been a knife, a car exhaust, or drugs/alcohol or any myriad of other methods.
I have a close family member with suicidal tendencies. You learn fast they can do it when you sleep or when just “going to the bathroom” or the “store” or whatever. We can do our part, but must radically accept that their mental health may win. It’s an awful place to have to be.
For my loved one a robe tie was enough in her mind. We can try and control their environments and even go to the bathroom with them at times but we just can’t cover every second.
Adding…Their brains work against them so hard and sadly an impulsive moment is all it takes. 😭

"Liquid courage" is a terrible thing for those who suffer with mental health issues. I am not a huge fan of guns, but the person who sold her the gun, did nothing wrong, how was that person to know? If we want to go, we WILL find a way. When one struggles with mental health, it is a terribly, lonely place. I find that most docs, nurses, etc, don't give a damn, too busy to care about someone that will be a distant memory, easily forgotten for them. I have had many occasions where I just need some help, and by professionals, they have turned the other cheek. RIP lovely lady...i completely understand, i hate to say it, but i do. 🙏🏻

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad it is being more openly spoken about more often.
Note: at the end you mention a number for alcoholism when you should have probably mention resources for mental health and suicidal ideation. This mentality that if we talk about suicide people are going to be enabled to do it, is totally outdated.

It’s because her choice destroyed him…in a very real sense, he feels as though she killed him too. There’s no joy in his life without her. Couples usually decide to make big decisions together, but she made the ultimate choice on her own, as though not caring enough what gut-wrenching pain and grief it would cause for years, if not the rest of his and the children’s lives, to come. Suicide is the ultimate selfish act. It benefits only that person and shatters the lives of those who love them. The victim has relief, but the loved ones are imprisoned by unspeakable pain, grief, guilt, loss, and devastation that is only beginning. BUT…the person who does it is not in their right mind. They are deeply, deeply mentally ill and suffering beyond their ability to go on. So, yes, those left behind go through a phase of anger/hatred/betrayal of what the victim has thrust upon them. It takes time to process all the many emotions that explode within…or slowly bubble to the surface in from a seemingly bottomless pit from hell. I this helps you maybe understand a little bit more.

People who make a living off of selling weapons that are designed to kill living beings need to be held to a higher standard. People who make laws need to make sure these higher standards are in place and that these dealers are 100% aware of who they are selling to. The fact of the matter is that the lawmakers and the dealers don't want to see this happen, so they advocate very successfully against with the support of people like yourself. We hold tobacco companies responsible for the deaths of those who use their products. We need to hold gun dealers responsible for the deaths their business brings into the world.
