  • The old one (wasn't THAT old) had corroded all the way through the bottom, and started leaking. I think it was due to spent coffee grounds being dumped in it over the years. Could be other things as well. But I am no longer going to do this.

The old one (wasn't THAT old) The Ground was fine as well - had corroded all the way through the bottom, and started leaking. I think it was due to coffee ground being dumped in it over the years. Could be other things as well. But I am no longer going to do this.

Interesting as coffee grounds seems to be the cause of my problems with a waste disposal too. I always wondered what the actual issue is; first time I heard of the corrosion issue. I assumed- due to the fact there doesn't seem to have been enough time for corrosion in my case,-that it was something to do with the grounds clumping into insoluble lumps that block the actual channel. Any thoughts on this as of course it's impossible to see what the actual problem is.

      Spent coffee is very acidic.

And if you do not thoroughly rinse them down in your disposal the grounds will continue to corrode areas inside there. So, either do not put them there at all or make sure you turn on the sink and rinse fully. I now just dump mine outside. It's good for the soil anyway. Or if you have a planter with flowers etc.

Would pouring a base liquid like vinegar down the drain neutralize the acidity of the coffee grounds?
