- Ritchie Blackmore is a legendary guitarist, creating some of rocks biggest bands (Deep Purple & Rainbow). But despite his virtuoso guitar skills, he's known to be a difficult person when it comes to relationships. One man that worked with Ritchie was former Rainbow lead singer Doogie White. Doogie says he is forever grateful for the opportunity he gave him but hasn't spoken to him since leaving the band in the 90s. But that's not unusual. Ritchie has helped forge the career of many top musicians and singers, including Ronnie James Dio, Joe Lynn Turner, David Coverdale, Graham Bonnet and others. Doogie explains that Ritchie's way is to take you from nowhere, give you a platform to shine and then set you free in to the world to see if you sink or swim.
For whatever it's worth, every Rainbow singer was top shelf. Blackmore definitely had an ear for good voices.

Ehhhh Ronnie Romero was pretty crap. Doogie had his moments but was relatively forgettable. Aside from Ariel and Hunting Humans I don't think he was terribly interesting

The appreciation for Doogie has increased throughout the years, what a great talent and even a better gentleman. The type of guy I would love to sit down and have a beer or two with.

That's right if you played with Blackmore you became a Star. Ritchie was a great talent scout. What Ritchie does today doesn't mean he wants to do the same thing forever.

The Black Masquerade Live DVD is still one of my favorites. Doogie White's stage antics keeps the momentum going and his audience engagement is second to none. The live version of Hunting Humans (Insatiable) is a killer. I'm glad Doogie found success after Rainbow.
Stranger in Us All is a very underrated album.Dougie was superb on the tour.He did a great job channeling Gillan,Coverdale,Hughes,Dio,Bonnet and Turner throughout the show.
Definitely the best rainbow album after ronnie's era. It was a throwback to that era, more focused on the hard rock side of rainbow instead of the pop-ish attitude he had with joe lynn turner and bonnet as singers. There is a live show filmed in germany of that album's tour in 1995. In my opinion, ritchie played his best that night. Often time ritchie's live solos haven't been as consistent as the album's ones. That night was different tho.
My favorite Rainbow album, I saw them playing it in a small club in Jersey when it came out, still have an old frail T-shirt from the concert.

Agree! I love Stranger in us all and I love a lot of the live stuff they did those years in the mid 90s too. The Black Maquerade live dvd is really really great. Some of Ritchie best, most consistent playing, in my opinion :)

Love Doogie White. ---My wife and I met him a few times. He makes one feel like you are talking to a really cool friend at a rock concert. What a super nice person he is. I so love his voice. He sang Lights Out with Schanker, and it was like a dream. I do not think people like him come around too often. That might be why he gets along so well with these huge rock stars. -----Thanks, Doogie for always taking the time to talk music and sign my records. You singed my Stormbringer record three times starting at the Birch Hill in New Jersey in 97(even know you were not on it)----Thanks for all the great music brother!!!
Some of rainbow's best work Was with Doogie white live. I am a Ritchie Blackmore fanatic If you go on to TH-cam you will hear some of the best rock and roll ever When Dougie was the singer. There is a bunch of them From the country of Chile. They did 1 In 1997 in Hollywood that will blow people's minds Blackmore was freakishly good. Every concert he did the songs a different way, But yet they were always amazing. You people have TH-cam look it up. People need to realize how good Ritchie Blackmore was on guitar.
Intelligent way of handling it. We all know Blackmore was difficult, but everyone after Gillan knew that they were not exactly going to work with Blackmore forever.

I can relate to that.
I have always loved Ritchie's playing and songwriting abilities. To me, he is about the greatest guitarist ever.
I have always known, that he isn't the easiest person and can be very difficult.
Anyway, hearing Doogie sing, made me found out Cornerstone and other things Doogie has done.
I have utmost respect to him and he deserves SO MUCH more regocnition. What a wonderful singer!
One of my Top 3 favorite singers and "Stranger" is my favorite Rainbow album. So wish he'd hook back up with Cornerstone for a 5th album.

Quite so. Had anyone heard of Joe Lyn Turner? Graham Bonnet was singing for beer and food in clubs in Australia. Dougie was homeless. Even Dio might have disappeared into obscurity without being given the huge boost in profile that his gig with Rainbow provided.

Doogie White a lovely guy with no airs or graces I met him via a Micheal Schenker meet and greet ,down to earth and found time for a conversation with me which I admire him for .
My best album literally I still listening to it these days, this singer is killer.

I saw Dougie sing for Schenker about 10 years ago. Great vocalist and just had a great attitude and air about himself on stage. Had a lot of fun, didnt take himself too seriously...lot of respect for him...
And us fans are eternally grateful for all the people that Ritchie has set free! So many good bands and good music has come out through the years that has a relation to Ritchie. Not only a guitar wizard but make-people-famous wizard too! :)
Agreed, MANY musicians and singers that came through Rainbow went on to other great bands (as a result of the exposure Ritchie provided).
You don't go on to great bands because of exposure. You go on to great bands because you have great talent. Ritchie didn't provide that.
It's a given that Ritchie wouldn't have anyone in the band who didn't have great talent already...it was the exposure of playing in Rainbow that put them on the radar of other bands, musicians, managers, et al...

Stranger in us all was a peak of Ritchie's playing. He was so unbelievably great on that album. Doogie is also a great singer.

I have loved Blackmore since I was a kid. 54 years. On all. It was abrush to see him. Even if it wa Joe Lynn Turner. My leaat favorite Rainbow singer, but watchin' Blackmore on stage was magical.
I saw Doogie Rainbow on the Stranger tour. Ritchie had such an odd demeanor onstage but his playing and tone was excellent. Doogie did a great job covering a demanding catalogue. Band was tight. Great show.

Found the Stranger In Us All cd from a supermarket among low price bargains and bought it, it must have been 1997. Loved the album then and still think that it´s one of the better Rainbow albums. Really liked Doogie´s voice and have followed what he´s been up to ever since. So that was very true and wisely put what he said in the interview.

loved hearing Doogie White on Yngwie Malmsteen's albums. Many people point that Malmsteen shows clear influences from Ritchie Blackmore with the the difficult to deal with, eccentric, genius guitar player.

Blackmore discovered Dio , David Coverdale , JLT and Doogie but lets be honest out of them all Doogie never did anything noteworthy after leaving Rainbow.

Meet this man many years ago. Great singer and front man. Had the pleasure of supporting him in Edinburgh in 2010 with his band la paz at a charity event.
Just a little insight into the 90's period with Doogie: Ritchie wanted a blues-based album, under the name "Moon" - a sir name.....but Ritchie felt compelled to ask Doogie what sorta album he wanted: Doogie suggested in the style of Deep Purple's Burn, and the classic Rainbow sound.....and that gave birth to Stranger In Us All; which...like many of you....I agree: an amazing album with a top-notch band. So yea....Doogie did more than sing: he impacted the sound and style of the LP.

Blackmore always said he’s always looking to work with different people. He doesn’t like working with the same musicians all the time. Once he’s done with you, that’s it
My two friends have been in Ritchie's current band for over 10 years each. They have nothing but nice things to say about him.

Working for Ritchie , is like traveling on a greyhound bus , you do the distance that you ve agreed to go and get paid ! then the bus pulls in you get off ! and other passengers get on , to make the bit of journey they agree to go with him, its not a return ticket , or best buddies for life you share the moment , enjoy it , hes not a umbilical chord, to feed you for life !
Hes got his journey to make in life , and has new ideas to shape ,the needs for ! to make them work ! a class guy , but not into nostalgia everyday , holds new possobilities ! for him !

I have heard that Doogie was clueless about UFO's music when he got hired by Michael Schenker, which is surprising to me since Doogie is from the UK.

Ritchie has always been a great guitarist no matter what he plays and although with Purple the pie was cut five ways, with Rainbow that was his band and you knew that from the get go but like Doogie said here, some went onto other bands (Bob Daisley) and didn't have any bad issues with him, others like RJD who had just about as big of an ego as Ritchie didn't want to compromise his style of writing so he left and in my opinion went onto better situations with both Sabbath and his own band but Ronnie always said time after time that if he didn't give him the chance in Rainbow, none of that would have happened and I'm sure others would say the same.
Had a chance to meet Mr. White while he was on tour with Yngwie Malmsteen on the rising force tour. They were playing at the former Crocodile Rock club in Allentown PA. He was a very cordial person.

I met Dougie in at Bannerman's bar Edinburgh, watching an Eric Martin gig! And when trying to talk to Doug, he seem really stand off-ish. But as soon as he realises I was with a group/ my dad, brother in-law, and couple of friends he quickly became more friendly. I was a big fan of his rainbow and yngwie malmsteen stuff. Now I don't really bother with any of his albums!
P.s I did recognise him until Eric said he was in the crowd. But I did recognise the name it's self.

Doogie is great, But never responds to Ritchies version of events that led to the demise of that version of Rainbow, Which was that He and Bassisi / Vocalist Greg Smith demanded a huge pay increase and refusal to continue the next leg of a tour without it. I saw him dance around the question in an earlier interview, Someone should corner him with the question head on.

When Ritchie's version does not match the versions of others, then Ritchie simply is embellishing (I don't want to say, lying) events in his favor.

My favorite story: Blackmore has been saying since 1973 that he wanted a blues direction, but Gillan and Glover got in the way. So he took a great blues singer, and now tell me how much more blues has been added to Mark 3 compared to Mark 2? Well, we can assume that he made a mistake in 1973 or changed his mind in the end, but no, he has not stopped talking about this for 50 years. Sly, sly, like a demon's eye.

Doobie white is an excellent singer. Wish Ritchie and doggie could have done at least a couple more albums before he went off to do Blackmore’s knight. Same thing with Dio. What a shame..

Ritchie sent Doogie to the naughty step once - during a live show and just before one of Ritchie's solos, Doogie said, 'ladies and gentlemen, Mr Ritchie Blackmore...' After the show Ritchie took him to one side and said, 'don't ever introduce me on stage again, they know who I am.'
Which goes to show what an absolute jerk blackmore has always been.
