We purchased Alexa as a "smart assistant" and it's been pretty much just meh. Why should we be paying more for something we should have had all along?

You purchased it and you kept it, while it’s been pretty meh. They could’ve released it with new hardware but didn’t. AI isn’t free to provide.
Just stick with your old Alexa, which I passed on for being meh myself

@@HenkHeidstra I understand AI isn't "free" to provide - I run small LLM's and various AI on my home lab servers, however, a huge juggernaut like Amazon has tremendous resources and could easily incorporate the AI into the membership price point. Of course, being a closed system the Alexa hardware cannot be (readily) flashed to work with our own LLMs (yet?). Nor does it have the GPU or tensor hardware to facilitate on-board AI, but that can all be done on the back end. So yes - I will be keeping my "dumb" Alexa assistant until something new comes along to replace it. At least I can turn off lights and get the weather. My point was this: Some of us have purchased the Alexa device in the hopes that it's functionality would have advanced and the device become an integral part of our daily routines. To some degree that has happened, but then they took those features and made them PAID features. We early adopters who bought into the Alexa Smart Assistant ecosphere have been left with a product that has barely moved the needle. Personally, I have 5 Alexa devices. Now I have to pay more to get it to where it should have evolved to over time? Would you feel the same if they stopped making tires for _your_ car?

People who already bought an Alexa-capable device and use it without a subscription are mostly people who also have Amazon Prime - nobody is going to want to pay for both Prime and another subscription - especially when they already subscribe to a more advanced LLM model somewhere.
If you already subscribe to an Anthropic service OR Amazon Prime, you should get to use at least a 'basic-functionality' version of this with it.

@@NickDrinksWater Oh, Alexa? Isn't it just the pinnacle of high-tech wizardry?
It's a revolutionary device designed to perform groundbreaking tasks like turning your lights on and off, setting alarms, and occasionally stumbling through incredibly complex questions like “What's the weather?” It’s like having a personal assistant who’s great at flipping switches but not much else.
But hey, if you’re looking for a bit more sophistication, there are other alternatives out there, like Nest, Samsung SmartThings, Sonos, Yonomi, etc. that offer a little more pizzazz and functionality. Because clearly, asking Alexa what the weather is like or setting a timer for your pasta is the pinnacle of tech evolution.

Most people who own an existing Alexa device already have an Amazon Prime subscription and a good deal are already subscribed to a given LLM - and as much as us 'AI enthusiasts' may be willing to shell out some extra cash for the use of multiple models, I don't think most people who are already paying for Prime and/or an LLM will want to.

Just the fact that I can't hear a audio stream with my old Alexa without forced commercial interruptions is a complete no go. I was able to listen to uninterrupted music streams f-ing 20 years ago, but nowadays big corporations want to stand in my freedom or have me pay regularly for no reason? No way! No, Alexa is not the same as Claude AI. They are distinct technologies developed by different companies for different purposes:
    1. **Alexa**:
    - Developed by Amazon.
    - It is a voice-controlled virtual assistant primarily designed for smart home control, playing music, setting reminders, answering questions, and other daily tasks.
    - Alexa operates on Amazon's proprietary artificial intelligence and machine learning systems.
    2. **Claude AI**:
    - Developed by Anthropic.
    - It is a large language model designed for natural language understanding and generation, similar to OpenAI's GPT models.
    - Claude is focused on providing conversational AI capabilities, often used in customer service, content generation, and other applications requiring advanced text processing.
While both Alexa and Claude AI utilize artificial intelligence, they serve different roles and are created by different companies.

Not sure if you heard what he was saying properly - nobody said that Alexa was Claude, he is saying that Amazon is planning on using Claude to power their own new 'Alexa AI' service.
At any rate, the way they are planning on going about it is a horrible idea. Considering most people with an already existing Alexa device subscribe to Amazon Prime *and/or* are likely to have a subscription to an LLM service as well, they aren't likely to want to pay for another subscription in order to have their Alexa device upgraded.
They should be including the upgrade as a Prime Subscription perk, or enable API access for those already subscribe to Anthropic.

Unfortunatly for Amazon, that ship has already sailed. Whilst AI companies have been developing this kind of technology, Amazon has been too busy redeveloping their speakers, that they forgot to innovate during this process, hence why a majority of these speakers are discovered in secondhand electronic retailers, because they were more of a novelty factor for its consumers.
Its going to take a miracle for Amazon to encourage subscribers to pay for what exactly? They should have innovated, whilst delivering their new range of speakers to keep them in the market, but sadly, consumers are not confident in their products anymore and certainly not prepared to pay for this kind of technology, which they have been lagging for so long. RIP alexa/claude AI.

Personally, I think Amazon should roll Claude AI into their prime services instead of charging an extra cost for advancing their AI services. Why should people pay more for something that they have been receiving for free in the past. I think this is a really bad move for Amazon to make. Amazon's cost for their prime services has increased exponentially over the past years anyway, this move may be seen in a bad light especially when their Alexa AI is tied to profits made on their sails of products and services.

Nobody wants Alexa to chat with, and they’re not gonna after this. They want to use Alexa as a smart home assistant, and, if Google Assistant -> Gemini is any indication, LLMs are terrible at that for now. - And a huge part of assistants is proactive actions. For example, you want an assistant to know you have an appointment coming up and suggest actions. - This isn’t gonna do that, without a bunch of services they bolt on. And they are sure not gonna invest in those

If it's included with prime then this is great. If they expect a subscription then I'm not interested. Why would anyone consider an Alexa ai subscription over one made by Google or Apple? Alexa is only useful in the home or in the Amazon shopping app. Google/apple ai will be integrated into mobile and available anywhere I am so they have more value. People buy Amazon devices because they are good deals, not because they are the best devices. Why would people looking to save money want to spend subscription money on something like an ai assistant? I don't many people would be willing to pay for this. Their only chance is to bundle this into Amazon prime.
