Bisquick's "Impossibly Easy Ham and Swiss Pie" with slight alterations has been the go-to breakfast "quiche" in my family for decades. Easy, little mess, and delicious!

Way back in the dark ages, aka the 1970's, my mother would make this. She would brown the meat until it developed a dark, but not burnt coating on the meat, and then do the same to the onions, making them almost caramelized. Then she'd do the Bisquik. Goes a long way to giving you that flame-kissed flavor! :)

Burning a good size candle next to where you’re cutting onions really does work. Also make it a coffee scented candle and you will be amazed at the stink that will remove. Chewing gum I’ve had hit some misses with doing that.
I LOVE this recipe. I’ve made it for years and got it off the back of the Bisquick box too!! I omit the tomatoes and mix in the cheese with the batter. It makes a better crust!
Hi Emmy, we love the impossible quiche using the same batter poured over sausage ( we use precooked sausages to save time) onions, broccoli cuts, mushrooms and 2 cups cheese. I make mine in a 9x13 pan or the next size down from the 9x13 if you want a thicker slice. This goes lovely with a fresh fruit salad. Enjoy your videos so much and hope your taste and smell returns quickly.
That's what I thought too! I've cooked with the impossible meat a lot and it works very similarly to bed. I'd be interested to see if this could be made eggless too

I used to have the Impossible Cheeseburger Pie from Bisquick all the time as a kid. The batter always formed a thicker bread on top, I never had it sink to the bottom before. And when I started making it myself, I added more spices cuz it's very plain. Fresh garlic, cayenne, Rosemary, etc. We also added the cheese in between the meat and bisquick layer. I would chop up tomatoes, jalapenos, red onion (and pickles for some ppl) to sit on top of each slice. I hate ketchup, so I don't miss it, but my husband would add some on top as well.
I put a nightlight in my coop, only because I've had my chickens startled in the middle of the night, fly around and slam into a wall, which broke their necks. The nightlight provides just enough light to see where they're flying if they get startled, but not so bright it interferes with their sleep pattern.
@Dana A-N wow...nothing like totally insensitive! This was NOT funny...these were my pets. Who laughs at an animal frightened and flying off their roost in the dark and dying because they slammed into a wall.
I have a recipe for what I call an egg pie that's on the impossible level... It also consists of jiffy baking mix... In a bowl place 1 cup of jiffy add milk to make a semi stiff spreadable batter spread about 1 inch into pie pan or baking dish , sautee mixed Oriental veg's and meats of your choice.. pour over Bisquick batter.. beat 10- 12 eggs and pour over the entire concoction.. bake at 385° for 40 min. Or until center is firm .. cut into squares or wedges top with white sauce... The impossible part is that the eggs totally disappear...
Running the kitchen sink, COLD water, while cutting onion, helps with tears too... as long as you cut the onion as close to the sink as possible. Always worked for me! 😁
I just made this and it's great! I added 1/2 cup chopped pickles after the onion and meat were cooked. I also just poured the batter over the meat in the cast iron skillet and baked it in the skillet. No need to wash another pan! Since the skillet is already hot, it only takes about 15 minutes to cook.
I used to watch this channel RELIGIOUSLY, i was completely obsessed and would watch the same videos repeatedly. Recently I was watching an anna oop video and saw the face of emmy. I got a Betty Crocker cookbook as a wedding gift and this was in there, and so it was one of the first dinners I made for my husband. It's an easy weeknight meal. We put ketchup and fresh, crisp pickle slices on it and it does make it taste like a cheeseburger. I also put the cheese in the mixture before baking it.
I like to add oregano or Italian seasoning(1 tsp) to the recipe. Another version can be to add cumin and diced green chiles.I think this needed to bake just a little longer to firm up and simulate a crust on the bottom. We enjoyed this from back in the 70s. Betty Crocker had a version. Thankyou for the nostalgia!
@@Christian-rn1ur I said I was aware of the difference. I called it Shepherd's pie because more people are familiar with calling it that no matter which meat is used.

I really like the variety you provide on your channel. I can get too wrapped up in “gourmet” recipes which I really love and enjoy but sometimes it’s nice to have easy one or two pot dinners. This recipe is a good jumping off point but I would be adding chopped pickles and maybe some shredded cheese and diced tomato into the filling.
I totally agree with the contact lenses and goggles onion trick, also just regular glasses help. Other tips are to chop in a well ventilated area; coat your knife with oil; wet your knife with water; keep your onions in the fridge; discard the top and bottom asap; once finished chopping coat onions in a small amount of oil and wash your knife and cutting board straight away :)
It’s funny how you mention contacts... I used to brag for years that cutting onions didn’t make me cry, than I started wearing glasses instead of contacts and learned quickly I no longer had a super power
I feel like my mom used to make this when I was a kid, back before we found out we had sensitivity to wheat. (That was a long time ago.) I know Mom used Bisquick for a LOT of things, and it was hard to adapt after we stopped eating wheat.
You might try it again. The bottom should be golden brown so you might not have had a hot enough oven. The texture looks a bit soft too. This is was originally supposed to be a sort of quiche consistency I think. When we made these growing up, we mixed the batter with a blender which does some sort of sciency thing to it and changed the final product considerably. Love the channel! Keep em coming.
Bisquick had several versions of this pie that they put on the back of the box back in the day. The one my mom made and I still make till next this day does not have tomatoes on top. It is very similar though. The difference is that you add some frozen or canned veggies in with the ground beef and the cheese is mixed in. I always season the ground beef and add minced garlic when browning it. It is pretty tasty served with a bit of ketchup. This looks really good!
I’m currently 41 weeks pregnant and your videos have saved me and my toddlers bonding time while I’m a beached whale rn 😂 she stops everything and points for me to put you on the tv when she hears your voice on my phone 💗
My mum made this, without the cooked tomato. She baked it a tad longer, so it was more browned, and then topped it after it was cooked, and cut into wedges, with diced raw tomato, diced onion, and shredded lettuce. We put a little dab of Mayo and mustard, mixed together, on the plate next to it, to dip it in. My brother used ketchup. We looooved it!
We made this from the recipe on the box but we used a little less milk and topped it with bacon and French fries onions. It was really good. Now I'm going to have to make one. Thanks Emmy. Happy Cooking.

I would leave the tomatoes off the pie. And add them along with shredded lettuce and pickles once the pie cooled. It would taste more like a true cheeseburger in my opinion. 😋
I've been making an Impossible Taco Pie since the late 80s. Same idea, but you add taco seasoning, onions, and green chilies to the meat. When it's done, you have toppings for it: lettuce, diced tomato, black olives, jalapeno, etc. It's really any personal favorites. My mother used to make it with venison and turkey as well. It was always an easy meal to make and we all loved it. Sometimes, though, you had to bake it just a bit longer to ensure that it was set up nicely. It's a great recipe to experiment with.
I make a version where I put a Bisquick crust in the bottom of the pie pan (I just kind of make Bisquick biscuit dough and padded into place, the pre bake that for 10 min. Then I add one egg and a little flour to the meat mixture.. I chop up some pickles mix them in and add a bit of mustard and ketchup into the meat mix. Add that all on top of the crust and smothered and shredded cheese, bake it for approx 20 min. It definitely comes out more "cheeseburger"
As a young military wife in Alaska (Ft. best tip for cutting onions: have a *VERY* sharp knife... the sharper, the better. The blunter the knife is, the more onion cells are ruptured and the mentioned acid is released! Also good: light one or more candle(s) close to the cutting board. The acid in the air is drawn to the candle by confection flow and burnt in the flame(s)
I make a chocolate chip pie that makes it’s own top crust. Batter; 1 stick melted butter, 1 cup sugar ( beat well) , add 2 beaten eggs, 1/2 cup AP flour, 1 t vanilla, 1 cup chocolate chips, ( 1 cup pecans or walnuts, optional) I prefer without. 1 prepared pie crust. Mix batter ingredients and pour into crust and bake at 350 for 50- 60 min. Fan from Rome GA!!!!❤️😊
I took organic chemistry from probably the world's only professor of garlic and onions. No joke, that was the focus of his research. The sulfuric-acid-from-onions thing is a myth, he said. Instead, onions metabolize the sulfur amino acid cysteine into a molecule that works like tear gas (Syn-Propanethial-S-oxide). Just sharing cos I think it's cool. :) Also, I think I'm cooking this for dinner tonight xD
I've made this from the bisquick box recipe. Nice&easy and good. It didn't have that name though. I put More veggies in it whatever is on hand. Garlic, onion, bell peppers, broccoli and I add a lot of cheddar cheese to it in the mix. I use to make this quite often. Easy to alter to your taste preferences. Could use ground turkey or chicken. Could make it southwest style onions,,black beans& corn, jalapenos, top w sour cream. Endless possibilities. Definitely needs some seasoning though otherwise it'll be blandsville
I have had this many times before as a kid through maybe my high school years. It almost looks like it's not cooked long enough. My Mom's recipe really has a bottom crust. A lot more cheese too. I haven't boughten Bisquick for years because I make my own. Great video Emmy, as always. Never a dull moment at your house. Lol! I love all your wild and well educated content. You are an inspiration!
I love making this, I usually add a tablespoon of garlic as well as 2 tablespoons of Heinze Chilie Sauce to the hamburger mixture, this gives it a bit of a kick or you can use taco seasoning. I then also cover it with tin foil and cook for about 15 min at 400 degrees and then take the tin foil off and cook it at 400 for another 30-35 min then once a knife comes out dry I'll add a ton of cheese to the top, and let it melt and then once melted broil the top for a couple min to really get a nice cruchy edge (don't let it burn watch it, literally 2 min)
The Impossible Cheeseburger Pie recipe has been a staple in my family for decades. It is very tasty and the nieces and nephews all requested it whenever I had them for the weekend.
Really good ways to keep onion fumes out of your eyes are to (1) chill your onions and (2) SIT DOWN. I discovered #2 because I, unfortunately, have to use a wheelchair. However, it's great for cutting onions! Use a regular chair and a countertop so your face isn't over your work area. A table may be too low, but if that's your only option, try to sit back as far as possible. Positioning a fan to blow the fumes away from you can be helpful, if your kitchen is big enough and it wouldn't be blowing fumes into someone else's face!
My beloved mother made these when I was a kid way back in the 1980s. I always enjoyed them, but I haven't had one in years. I should make one up some night: they were always a quick weekday night dinner. Thanks for bringing back such sweet memories.
HEY EMMY!! Please read!! I had tons of chickens and they need the daylight for vitamin d in order for their bodies to bind to calcium so they can produce egg shells! It’s also a great idea to feed the finely crushed shells of your chickens back to them! You can do this by putting it in their feed. This gives them all the calcium they need :)
Onion trick I learned from Encyclopedia Brown: peel it under cold water. I find that cutting it in half and then peeling it under cold running water washes away some of that oniony vapor and less of it gets in my eyes as I chop. Also essential in no-tears onion chopping: a very sharp knife.
I've never had the CB Impossible Pie, but same theory I make a Impossible Quiche. It's so simple mix base in blender and add whatever special items you want, my favorite spinach and mushrooms! I usually make 2 varieties at a time since the family love them.
It needed to cook a bit longer and at a bit higher temperature. You can add pickles, onions (some sautéed with ground beef, some added to the ground beef raw when it is put in the pie pan), and other 'picnic/cookout' vegetables to the 'cheeseburger pie'. Also, mix in small cubes of cheese or grated cheese with the ground beef when you put it in the pan.
This is made in our house almost twice a month now. Can be done with beef and taco seasoning...taco pie, breakfast sausage and hashbrowns...breakfast pie, Italian sausage and mozzarella...pizza pie, left over chicken from baked chicken...cheesy chicken pie....

@Dana A-N wow...nothing like totally insensitive! This was NOT funny...these were my pets. Who laughs at an animal frightened and flying off their roost in the dark and dying because they slammed into a wall.
Dana A-N just delete your comments. WTF?..
My favorite part of Emmy’s vids are at the very tail end where she does or says something goofy! Love it! 😂😍
Your honesty is refreshing to hear
Running the kitchen sink, COLD water, while cutting onion, helps with tears too... as long as you cut the onion as close to the sink as possible. Always worked for me! 😁
And make sur you cut onions quickly cause onions can trap bacteria
I just made this and it's great! I added 1/2 cup chopped pickles after the onion and meat were cooked. I also just poured the batter over the meat in the cast iron skillet and baked it in the skillet. No need to wash another pan! Since the skillet is already hot, it only takes about 15 minutes to cook.
I thought it was using impossible mock meats by the title, but this is just as good!
I came here to say the same thing
Its way better that fake meat is horribly unhealthy and smells and tastes like cat food.
I'd love to try it with impossible meat/beyond meat :)
@@KellyeR1970 Fake meat is unhealthy? Do you know how unhealthy beef is?
@@sindhuv7986 if you look for it, EVERYTHING is unhealthy!
I used to watch this channel RELIGIOUSLY, i was completely obsessed and would watch the same videos repeatedly. Recently I was watching an anna oop video and saw the face of emmy. I was sooo confused her face was freakishly familiar and I knew i used to be obsessed to watch japanese candy taste tests. popin cookin, you name it. So i look up japanese candy taste test and scrolled for a while and I found your account and couldn’t be happier! I’m so glad you’re still active and doing well!
Speaking of, you need to make Disney's cheeseburger eggrolls!
BRUH YOU ARE EVERYWHERE
I got a Betty Crocker cookbook as a wedding gift and this was in there, and so it was one of the first dinners I made for my husband. It's an easy weeknight meal. We put ketchup and fresh, crisp pickle slices on it and it does make it taste like a cheeseburger. I also put the cheese in the mixture before baking it.
I always wondered about these "impossible" pies. Now I know.
The coconut custard impossible pie works well. We are on the hunt for more successful ones.
It kind of looked like it had mashed potatoes in it to me. I think I'd prefer that, meaning Shepherd's pie.
Wouldn't that be cottage pie? Shepherd's pie would be sheep meat not cow meat
@@beks6197 I'm aware of that 😂 don't be that person
@@Jackson-iv7sy don't be what person? They were quite polite in correcting your mistake. Dont be that person 😂
@@Christian-rn1ur I said I was aware of the difference. I called it Shepherd's pie because more people are familiar with calling it that no matter which meat is used.
@@Jackson-iv7sy Maybe in your circle, but the rest of the world is aware of the difference. People would definitely know if you got it wrong where I'm from.

I had the same experience 😂
I put cheese in my batter before I pour it over the beef. Makes it so much better and firmer.
More unlikely than impossible 🙂
And I never knew that chickens didn't lay eggs in the winter. I learn so much on this channel.
They will lay eggs... but not very many....
Congratulations! May everyone be happy and healthy, and may you have a quick and painless delivery!
To cut onions without crying: I wear lab goggles I bought at the hardware store. ✅

We made this from the recipe on the box but we used a little less milk and topped it with bacon and French fries onions. It was really good. Now I'm going to have to make one. Thanks Emmy. Happy Cooking.
This reminds me of an egyptian béchamel, which is something my husband makes (and you could try it sometime?)
man. not that emmy will ever read this comment but i always laugh to myself at the end of the video when emmy says "please share this video with your friends" because me and my boyfriend watch almost every video together and it's one of our favourite activities when a new video is released. thank you emmy for being a chipper personality and frequently posting intriguing and delightful content for us, and your fanbase, to consume!
I would leave the tomatoes off the pie. And add them along with shredded lettuce and pickles once the pie cooled. It would taste more like a true cheeseburger in my opinion. 😋
That's what I always do. I also serve with ketchup, mustard and mayo . ( any of your choice )
Would you please include a written recipe in your descriptions? It would give ease of access while working.
I used to work for a woman who considered this to be “haute cuisine.”
As a young military wife in Alaska (Ft. Richardson, near Anchorage), I went to a product party once (like Tupperware or Pampered Chef, don't remember which one) where the hostess had multiple impossible pies for refreshments, using meat her husband had hunted. So that's how I got to try bear! There was also elk and deer, but bear was the exciting one. It didn't taste as good (kind of funky), but I was grateful for the chance to try new things!
I thought, when I saw the title, the meatless burger as the “impossible “ part. Lol.
OH MY GOSH when emmy said the trick to not crying when cutting onions is wearing contact lens, that blew my mind!!! I wear contact lens and have never had the issue of my eyes watering when I cut onions but I never associated the two together!! it all makes sense!
I wonder if this would work with impossible burger, so that it can be an “impossible” impossible cheese burger pie.
Cheeseburger Pie is a staple at our house. I've made it both the "impossible" way and with a pre-made crust. Both are delicious!
Aren't you glad I invented the burger?
Buttermilk is my absolute favorite!!! My Grandmother and Mother both made buttermilk pies from scratch. But when Mom started teaching me how to bake as a small child I started with Impossible Pies! Chocolate is awesome too!

Hey Emmy! Love the videos!
My mom has a fudge pudding cake recipe (not sure where it originated) where the ingredients are put into the pan and separate into cake and “sauce” layers when baked. It’s a family favorite if you’re interested. 😀
If I ever try this I'm mixing ketchup and mustard with the cooking meat.
I've made cheeseburger eggrolls and mixing in ketchup and mustard absolutely takes it to that "Buger" lever
What? No pickles??
I would definitely mix in ketchup and mustard and top with chopped dills! Yum!
Hey Emmy, just discovered your channel. This brought back memories, my mom discovered the Impossible Bisquick cookbook when I was a teenager. She made this recipe often, and I still have the small cookbook Bisquick published, there was also a broccoli chesse impossible pie she made.
I'm a subscriber now to your channel love the format and you are a great narrator.
My mom made this when I was little... oh my goodness the memories!!! And yes she got it from the back of the Bisquick box!!
best tip for cutting onions: have a *VERY* sharp knife... the sharper, the better. The blunter the knife is, the more onion cells are ruptured and the mentioned acid is released!
Also good: light one or more candle(s) close to the cutting board. The acid in the air is drawn to the candle by confection flow and burnt in the flame(s)
I always wondered why I didn't cry while cutting onions before and now I do... I used to always wear contacts and now I don't...

I make a chocolate chip pie that makes it’s own top crust. Batter; 1 stick melted butter, 1 cup sugar ( beat well) , add 2 beaten eggs, 1/2 cup AP flour,
1 t vanilla, 1 cup chocolate chips, ( 1 cup pecans or walnuts, optional) I prefer without.
Also, I think I'm cooking this for dinner tonight xD
I watch you probably every morning, your energy tends to calm me down during school hours. You bring such ease and joy to this world 🥺💖
I've made this from the bisquick box recipe.
😜 Thanks Emmy. I have made impossible quiches using bacon or sausage. They are really good. I also love impossible pie with or without coconut.
My mom used to make these Bisquick recipes back in the day. Brings back so many memories.
you find the most amazing wacky recipes Emmy! love it!
I have had this many times before as a kid through maybe my high school years.
It almost looks like it's not cooked long enough. My Mom's recipe really has a bottom crust. A lot more cheese too.
I will look at our recipe and see if it's the same one. If it's different I'll post it for you.
Did you know you can also know you can make your own biscuit mix? I haven't boughten Bisquick for years because I make my own.
Great video Emmy, as always. Never a dull moment at your house. Lol! I love all your wild and well educated content. You are an inspiration!
I love making this, I usually add a tablespoon of garlic as well as 2 tablespoons of Heinze Chilie Sauce to the hamburger mixture, this gives it a bit of a kick or you can use taco seasoning. I then also cover it with tin foil and cook for about 15 min at 400 degrees and then take the tin foil off and cook it at 400 for another 30-35 min then once a knife comes out dry I'll add a ton of cheese to the top, and let it melt and then once melted broil the top for a couple min to really get a nice cruchy edge (don't let it burn watch it, literally 2 min)
my mom makes this all the time!! Its a staple of our household im glad more people are liking it
The Impossible Cheeseburger Pie recipe has been a staple in my family for decades. It is very tasty and the nieces and nephews all requested it whenever I had them for the weekend.
This looks amazing!😋🍔🥧
I like how Emmy reacts to each dish differently. I often skip to that part just to see what happens!
