    Hello, this is the day that I embark on a journey of audio book narration. In my research of what's involved in audio book narration I stumbled on your channel. I'm pleased with what you've compiled and hope that I can apply your pointers in my future endeavors. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and expertise with people like myself. As a Black Woman I'll strive to be successful in this industry and given the opportunity I'll make a significant contribution.

    I am starting on short stories and working my way to novels. I just need to get my sound studio (closet or room) just right.

    • @BaileyVarness
      @BaileyVarness  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good! Try a VERY short book first and if it gets approved, you know your studio works!

    Concerns about "Royalty Share" payment deals:
    I would be concerned about "royalty share" as payment from the "rights holder,"as their books success depends on marketing. Is this their first book? How well is the author known?
    And then, narrating a novel is a paced marathon which takes many hours, if not weeks in a row as a commitment.
    While going fully into this book project, I can't imagine having time for other jobs I'm passing up due to a royalty paid job...which has no financial guarantee.
    Once those hours are invested, you can't get them back.

    • @BaileyVarness
      @BaileyVarness  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Royalty Share is definitely a gamble, but it's great when you're just starting out because the pressure is much lower. I recommend that people start out doing Royalty Share books that are less than an hour because you're going thought a learning curve and it could get rejected and you have to start over. But once you're experienced you should definitely try to do as much PFH and Hybrid work as you can!

    It is so sad I can't use this in Australia. :( Any idea how to become an audiobook narrator in Australia?

    • @BaileyVarness
      @BaileyVarness  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would write to ACX directly and see what platform they have in Australia. They add them all the time!

    Could I audition for an audiobook without having experience? Or do I need to build a small list of experience on my page first?

    • @BaileyVarness

      You can audition whenever you want to and feel ready!

    Is voice over/ audible book narrating your main job? Just wondering cause I’m trying to step in the business and just want to see if it’s possible

    • @BaileyVarness
      @BaileyVarness  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes it is. It's been my job exclusively quite a bit, but I've also had to work day jobs sometimes. I would say that it's definitely something that takes time to develop. The more you do, the more opportunities come your way. I live in a very expensive area now and have been lazy about looking for jobs, but I'm working to change that and make voice-over my main career again! I have done it before.
      So, it's a very personal journey and nothing is guaranteed, but a lot of it has to do with how much you hustle to get jobs and put yourself out there. The people who are always showing up are the ones who succeed. Also, if you have a good voice that helps too!

    • @BeardofHorrors

      Voice Work Academy Thank you so much for the info. Sorry to keep bugging with questions lol, but one more, do you think it’s possible to make a living off of mainly short stories? Is there enough short story books to go around? I’m willing to do long books but maybe not for every single job

    • @BaileyVarness
      @BaileyVarness  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BeardofHorrors There are a ton of short stories available, but to be honest they don't tend to sell as well. I've done a lot of them myself and from personal experience, you make more money on the longer books. That said, if you do a ton of them then there's a lot of work in your pipeline that can be collecting royalties, so it can average out.
      So, there's nothing wrong with them, you should do them if they're all you have time to do, but just know they don't tend to do as well as longer books.
