Excellent series! After recording a book from Gutenberg, how would we become the rights holder or what to “sell the book on Amazon”? Do we need a 2nd “Rights holder” profile or what?
Yeah, I think you need to set up a Right's Holder/Author profile. I wish they made it easier to just do both narration and rights holder stuff in one place, but they do seem to be separate
Thanks for the speedy reply. I searched for a link to sign up as an author / RH. It took me to where there was a “Set up / Log in” but when I tried, I was redirected to my Narration profile. Ouch. Do you have the legitimate link or maybe the work around needed to set up both? TY,TY,TY!!!😅

Hey hun thank you so much for all your help and support you are a natural teacher you made the process so easy . Do you have a website by any chance would love to check it out .💖
Hello, Great information and love your positive attitude. You have a wonderful voice. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I have one question. How long should the sample clips be? Thank you once again!!
Thanks so much! I'm assuming you're talking about the samples of your voice in your profile page? If so, the sample clips should be about 30-60 seconds. Just enough to give a sense of your voice so a listener can move on to your next one.
Should we complete the credits of reading the books you mentioned on website before trying to get hired? Also, you mentioned the SAG part, should we look to enter the union?
You should audition for short books on ACX whenever you're ready. Reading royalty free books is an option for you to practice and have samples. SAG is something you shouldn't think about until you know that this is the business you're going to stay with because it costs a lot to get started.
Your videos is literally a gold mine. Thank you for the videos. Looks like ACX is only available for people from US and UK? Any idea what people from other countries can do? Not having a site to upload your audio book narrations is a huge roadblock. Any idea of any other sites that lets people from other countries contribute?
This video was very informative! I am very new to narrating and would like to try it out. For someone like me who has no experience being of a narrator, how should I describe myself in the “Professional Summary“ description? Should I be honest of what is my occupation? Or should I be honest on how I am not a professional narrator/amateur?
You should call yourself a narrator even if you're just starting out. If you have a mic, a quiet space to work, and have created a sample demo then you're a professional! You don't need to share any other occupations you have because authors probably won't be interested, unless it's really cool. Just describe your voice and what you can read well!
There seems to be a Projects tab with the number of projects you have done at the top of the page. When you click it, it shows you your profile information and where you can edit it. You can add all of your other account information in the dropdown area where it says your name at the top of the page. Click on Account Settings to fill out that area.
Thank you! If you don't have an account with Amazon.com, then you need to make one there on their main website. You don't have to buy anything, you just need to set up a free account there. Then, you will be able to use the same login credentials on ACX.
I would recommend it. That way no one will complain that you're using their copyrighted material for your business purposes. Once you become a narrator, you can use that book!
You're welcome! Yes, you can set or change your rates at any time, but sometimes when you set it too high, there just isn't any work. Of course, you can't change a price for a particular project once you've agreed to a contract, but for anything after that, you can ask for anything you want.
Thanks! I know last year they added Canada as a country that could record. You may want to contact ACX and ask where you can get started as a Canadian. It also might all be done under Audible.ca
I want to read books in Spanish as well, where would be a good place to say that I also am fluent in Spanish or is there no need to say this at all? Also, is there a video on recording and uploading a sample?
Good questions! I'm not sure if or where ACX has a section for Spanish language titles. I recommend that you write to them directly to see where those titles are listed. As far as recording a sample read, use the same recording and editing process that I teach for doing a book you get hired for. You can find royalty free books to read at www.gutenberg.org/. You can upload your samples when you click on your name and Add Your Sample
When making a sample profile, is it ok to just do one or 2 min samples from any book? For example I have several books that I just grabbed off my shelf and recorded a few samples. Is this something frowned upon?
With samples, that's probably fine. I'd keep them to 1 minute or less. Once you have some actual work, replace those samples with books you've actually done!
I was wondering if you could expand on options for people who might be considering reading explicit content using a pseudonym. Would you recommend setting up a separate account under that pseudonym so you can list credits pertaining to those genres? I saw that ACX allows you to use one in the submission process but I expect that you might not want these credits to show up in your main profile?
Good question. So, ACX is only going to let you have one account because all of the payments that you get and your tax information need to be in the same place. Your public profile will only show the credits that you want to list, so you can exclude anything erotic if you want. They will show up in your production tabs, but anything there is just for you because it has sensitive information. You don’t have to worry about others seeing anything there.
Thanks for your quick response! This series has been incredibly helpful and I'm a little less anxious about checking the "all genres" box. So in terms of marketing then, a good (PG rated sample) pertaining to the genre is good enough and rights holders for controversial/explicit titles would generally assume the use of a pseudonym and know to ask for those credits (if any) in a private message? If a listener/rights holder likes work produced under a pseudonym, does ACX provide a way for them to contact the producer without sharing their real name? I don't really care if people know that I'm willing to do this type of work in general, my concern is more about how you would market yourself in these genres without one's children or extended family members or listeners of say, child/teen books accidentally finding specific examples of it. Thanks again!
@@teresajones4643 If you're really worried about anyone finding out, maybe you shouldn't do them because nothing is 100% hidden. However, I know many actors who just use their pseudonym for books they don't want appearing under their name and no one has ever asked about it or discovered it. I know people in their ACX bio who say "I also read as", and then say their pseudonym for erotic authors to know they are welcome to submit. You can also just have PG rated samples as you mentioned and erotic authors can just ask you based on your sound, or you can audition for them.
There should be a Projects link at the top of the page where you should be able to add a picture. You should also be able to click on your name to add more information
Is the comment section still active? If so, I am filling out my ACX profile now and have a domain registered but no finished website. I do however narrate creepypasta on my other channel should I put the link to that in the website section or should I wait until my website I'm putting together is complete? Thank you for this series! It's helping me get started trying to get into audiobook narrating.
Sorry for the late response. I didn't get notified about your comment. You don't have to have any website listed in your profile unless you want to feature it. I would recommend that you just wait until your professional website is done showing off all of your VO work before you add it.
You fill in your tax information based on your personal circumstances. It's very straightforward, but if you have more questions you need to contact your accountant.
Audible and ACX have a different section for rights holders for producing a book. It's not my area of expertise, but if you'd like to produce and not just record, you need a second profile there.
Hello, I have built a studio, and a studio stand with three tiers. The top tier is where my monitor is located. My laptop does make a slight sound with the fan, but it is on the lowest tier. Will the hissing still be picked up if I have it on the lowest shelf? I haven't yet bought my mic or interface, therefore, I'm unable to test it out.
@@BaileyVarness hi, yes I hooked up a second monitor that is on the top of the workstation. The workstation is 5 feet tall. I then have the laptop on thy bottom tier about 2 1/2 feel below.
@@rmarasa628 It's hard to say. A lot of it is going to depend on exactly where you put your microphone. If it's closer to the monitor, it could work, but the fan might just be too loud in the space to be ignored. You might eventually look into getting an extra mic shield like this one to surround your mic from extra noise if it is a problem: www.amazon.com/Alctron-Microphone-Acoustic-Soundproof-Soundproofing/dp/B07BJZFBD8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1545346537&sr=8-2&keywords=kaotica+eyeball
Question. If you can produce and upload a recording of a royalty free book to audible that you got from gutenberg for example, does this mean that you could also upload it to TH-cam legally, do you know? Thanks for all your help so far :)
@@BaileyVarness I am interested in the part where you mentioned making money from royalty free books. Would you mind telling me how someone might go about doing that? If you have the time. Thank you for your wonderful video.
@@Pumkyn I've never been on the Rights Holder side of the process, but you could set up a separate account as an author/rights holder so that you could produce the book there. You could also just upload it to TH-cam as you said and if you get enough views/subscribers, then you could monetize there as well.
Great video Baily!, Have you seen the website currently Sept. 5 2020? Is this still a viable option or am I able to submit a profile despite the high volume of audio submissions? Thanks so much. By the way Your VOICE JUST TRANSFORMED WHEN YOU READ THE DESCRIPTION... that was voice over 101. Thanks!
Wow, this was a lot clearer back in 2018. For 2020 it only says Full Name * (visible on public profile). Makes me think if this is my professional name or legal name and what if I use my professional name and they send the check out with that name would my bank be able to accept it? Sigh, maybe I'm overcomplicating this.
Have you used your professional name for business purposes before? Do you have a business bank account set up under your professional name or a different business name? If you do need to get paid by check, just let them know who to make the check out to if it's different from the name on your profile. Pretty much every author that you work with isn't using their real name and if they need to get paid, it just goes through their business account.
Quick question: Do you need to record an entire book and put it on the platform before using it as a sample, or can use just record clips from royalty free books then use those as your samples?
You can just do clips of the Royalty Free books! I recommend you read about 1 minute of each book you would like to use as a sample. If you ever do want to read the entire book down the road and put it up for sale, that's up to you!
Thanks for that, I live in Switzerland, can I set a profile ACX saying that I'm in the united states? cause it does not when I choose Switzerland, thanks for your answer
Right now, ACX only seems to work for the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland, but they are adding more countries all the time. I would send an email or message to AXC/Amazon and ask when they plan on making the platform available in Switzerland.

I'm having trouble picturing your setup. You have a separate monitor and laptop? Also, how far apart are the tiers you have built?
I have a question: Can you use something you wrote yourself as an audio sample? Not a published book or anything, but maybe a short story?
Sure! And you know you'll be the only one with that sample, so go for it!!!
Question. If you can produce and upload a recording of a royalty free book to audible that you got from gutenberg for example, does this mean that you could also upload it to TH-cam legally, do you know? Thanks for all your help so far :)
Yeah! It's royalty free, so you can use it anywhere you want commercially!
Thanks!
Thank you! Yes, you can still set up a profile. My students do it all the time for the first time these days, and are getting their first books!
3:08 Sadly I'm in Trinidad... I don't think I'll be able to sign up. :(
I think you should write to ACX directly and see what platform they have in your country or when it's going to get there. Good luck!
@@BaileyVarness Thanks!
Maam , ACX doesn't works in my country. Do I have any other site to work on with the same skill?
I'd write to ACX directly and ask them what platform they use in your country. It should be similar to what we have in the US hopefully.
Random question, what image file size should I upload? My image looks squished every time I upload it!
Is it a rectangle file? Maybe edit it before uploading it and make it a circle or square.
I would send an email or message to AXC/Amazon and ask when they plan on making the platform available in Switzerland.
thanks for your quick answer, will do that, and in case you need orchestral music one day, I compose (-; my site: imagineyourmusic.com/ . best greetings from Geneva
Fantastic!
Hello! I’m a first time author trying to put my book on audible. Is this video still for me? Or do I create an author account? I will be reading my own book and recording
I think you're going to need both. I would write to ACX directly and ask them because I know that they have a lot of people who do that. I just haven't done it myself!
I have an author account on ACX. Will they allow me to have a producer account too?
Yes! A lot of authors produce their own books.
Please help me ... I want to do this .... but my country is not available in acx ... what should I do please if someone know let me know
Write to ACX directly and ask them what platform they have in your country that you can get on, or when it's coming to your area.
@@BaileyVarness Thank you for replying ... I really appreciate you .... no youtuber replied for this issue ... I'll try that .. and once again thank you and god bless you
Is there no longer an option to add a photo?
I'm able to replace my photo in the main dashboard area of ACX now, so you can probably add yours there too.
It's very sad for me to hear that this platform is just only for two countries.
Thank you so much for your informative videos, kisses for you 😘🤗
Thanks! I know it's in at least 4 countries now, so I'd write to ACX directly to see what they have available in your area.
@@BaileyVarnessits now available in i8ndia too..ive just finished recording my first audio book for amazon audibles.great advice and pointers you have on here. thank you very much:)
@@Healmyheart68 That's fantastic news!!! I know I've been asked this before, so thanks so much for letting us know and for the kind words!
It still says it's allowed only for two countries and me being in India, won't be able to record for it. Kindly help me how can I go about it..
@@Healmyheart68 could you please share if there's another link that will be needed or any other info. Thank you!
@Imagineyourmusic
I ran up against the same problem...
I would love it if acx was available for India...
Ugh. I hate that they aren't branching out quickly enough to other countries. Try to send an email or message to AXC/Amazon and ask when they plan on making the platform available in India if you can!
@@BaileyVarness hey thanks :)
Yes I did email them... They said they'll alert me when acx comes to India...
Beautiful work with this video series btw 😊👍🏽
You've made it very clear and simple....
Thanks so much! Way to reach out and work to make things happen for yourself!!!
iam in india and I just finished my first audible for them...so now its available!!
How would you go about selling your royalty free audiobook on audible for that extra money?
You would act as both the producer and the right's holder! Look at the directions ACX gives in their help section for Rights Holders and that should show you how to get it on there.
I cant get my picture to update for some reason
I've heard people say that before. I think sometimes ACX is updating its platform. I'd write to them if you're still having problems.
What is acx is not in my country
I would contact ACX directly. They add new countries all the time!
Darn ACX doesn't work for Finland. Not sure about the other EU countries.
I'd write to them directly and see if they have a different platform there, or when ACX is coming to Finland. :)
Thanks so much for the reply! I've actually been binge watching all your videos. So far, the best series of videos that I've managed to find so far! Thanks so much for all of this great information!
@@KatsPurr Thanks so much, and you're very welcome!!!
Could you use your phone?
For using the websites, I don't see why not. As for recording, I know they make microphones that fit into phones, but it might be hard to edit. Let me know if you can make it work!
How can I become audiobook narrator in India?
I'm not sure. I would write to ACX directly because I think they have a different platform there.
@@BaileyVarness thanx
Seems like the set up is different now.
They do tweak things every so often. My profile has been up for a long time now, but it's still pretty much the same. I just that I can edit the profile under the Project link now. Are you seeing something different?
@@BaileyVarness I don't see where to add a pic or the other details
Also how do I record a sample?
@@sfreedom2007 It's all under the "Projects" link now. Here's what ACX says about it: audible-acx.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6471/kw/profile
@@sfreedom2007 Record your sample the same way I showed you how to do any other recording in this series. You can look for royalty free books to read here: www.gutenberg.org/
And then I stopped watching this awesome series because I’m in Australia 😫😫😔😔
Oh no! Be sure to write to ACX to see when they are going to add Australia, or if they have a different platform that they use there.
How about the accent 😤
It depends! Sometimes it's wanted for a book, sometimes they want a different accent than yours. Accents are actually a filter you can check when looking for auditions and sometimes they'll just like what they hear!
