Your milky smooth skin is so captivating ❤ Sighs…..anyways, I can’t stand audiobooks anymore. I feel like my soul is being drained from my body with these LONG audiobooks I narrated on ACX for peanuts. I’m doing commercials and short form narration moving forward, unless someone with an audiobook pays me at or near GVAA rates.
Totally understand. I only accept industry rates for all my work now. Commercials are great for VO income!
I am so excited I found this series and you! It has been a dream of mine to be a narrator and voice actor. I’m finally getting started with the help of your videos. Thank you!
Wonderful! You're so welcome!!!
I am SO glad I found your channel. I'm heading over to your website to take your course. You offered so much in your free course that I was blown away. My sister has been encouraging me to do this work, but I've been so afraid to try that I just gave up. Finding you is more than a gift. You are such an amazing instructor. You have given me the courage to take the plunge. In the past, I wrote a few stories that I read to my children and my mom (she has since passed), and they kept saying that I should publish the stories. Of course, I didn't listen. I am now going to give it my best shot. Thank you for creating this course. Thank you for your generosity and encouragement! I have subscribed.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for your kind words! Good luck with your journey and keep going!!!
Thank you for your videos! I'm hoping someone can answer my question--the rights holder and I agreed that I would upload as I produce each section so that she could monitor and make sure she was satisfied with the files. However, she just messaged me and said she is concerned not to see any progress. HELP. Can she not see the files I have uploaded so far??? TIA!
If she's not seeing the progress, it sounds like she has a technical glitch on her end or doesn't know where to look. I'd have her contact ACX support and let her know exactly what you've uploaded so far that you can see is there. Hope this helps!
If your 15 minute check is several chapters, how do you upload that as one file?
You can just upload the first chapter and send them a message that this is the 15 minute sample that you have because it's now going into another chapter. If they want more, you can just create all the chapters separately and then a file with several of them together to total 15 minutes.
@@BaileyVarness thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this amazing lesson, I just have a question regarding the last /ɑ•ʊ / sound, for me the first /ɑ•/ sound is more like that front vowel as in cat rather that in car, what are your thoughts about that? Thank you for uploading these great videos
You're very welcome! Are you from the Midwest? That accent tends to have the more of the sound like you're describing. That would be written as /æ•ʊ/ instead of the American Standard version /ɑ•ʊ/. Try them both and see how it feels in your mouth!
Thank you so much for the tips and tricks, very helpful!
You're very welcome!
I don't have a problem with my Yeti hissing. I do ASMR content regularly and it my voice sounds very clear and audible.
That's good. They must have upgraded their A to D converter. They were cheap about it in the past, but maybe they've learned to stay competitive!
How do you produce a royalty free audiobook on Gutenberg? I can't figure out how to.
Audible and ACX have a different section for rights holders for producing a book. It's not my area of expertise, but if you'd like to produce and not just record, you need a second profile there.
I just want to thank you for providing such detailed and thorough content. As someone just getting into the Fiverr ecosystem, this has proven to be invaluable. Thanks!!!
Awesome! You're very welcome
Hey Bailey! Love the content, thanks for sharing all the nuggets of info! Curious if yo can speak any more to the timed audio sync process? I can't find any tutorials. Any resources to check out? Thanks so much!!
Time syncing is difficult to do with Audacity. I use Adobe Audition which I think is the easiest and most practical way to do it. I have a tutorial for it in my paid course at voiceworkacademy.com if you're ever interested. For a good discount, check out my commercial VO webinar: easywebinar.link/WdLQMynjtU
I finished all the lessons (part 1-11) not too long ago, but I know I still have a long way to go. I'll be going back to Part 1 and do all the lessons all over again. I learned a lot from you. I just wanted to say THANK YOU. Please take care and keep up the great work.
You're so welcome. Congrats!!!
Hey hun thank you so much for all your help and support you are a natural teacher you made the process so easy . Do you have a website by any chance would love to check it out .💖
Thank you so much! My website is voiceworkacademy.com/
This lesson cleared up my long-held question about wh sound. I hear more h when I listen to American old radio dramas, but I don't think I hear h much while watching today's movies or dramas. You always offer something to learn. I appreciate it.
Yeah, it's really only used in a few dialects and in old-timey talk. Glad it helps!
@@BaileyVarness Good to know. Thank you.
It's amazing to realize how very southern I still do sound, despite being told by my family that I don't even sound Texan anymore. These little distinctions are so wild
It really is in the ear of the beholder, isn't it?!
Thanks again for this great lesson. I realized that I was closing my mouth too much when I pronounced /u/ in /o•ʊ / and /ɑ•ʊ /, thanks to your instructions. The way you break down the sounds and your clear pronunciation really help me. Thank you.
Good to know, and you're very welcome!
Another very useful lesson! Thanks very much! I repeated this Part 5 quite a few times, and now I have a pretty good idea about how you can pronounce the R Diphthongs and I think I have improved a lot. But I still feel awkward here and there. Now I let myself go on to Part 6, but I will come back to this chapter later.
So proud of you!!!
@@BaileyVarness Thank you. I'll keep trying.
Your videos on ACX projects is so friggin helpful. I'm totally new--and I already got 3 gigs! So I'm of course panicking. So THANK GOD for your videos! So practical with the screen recordings and such. Wow.
Oh my goodness that's awesome! You're going to do great. Just take your time and follow the steps. It's exactly what you need to do. You got this!!!
I finished the first round of practicing Part 2~4. It took me about a month. Now I'm going over the lessons one more time before going to Part 5. All your lessons are so helpful. For example, the way you teach /i:/ helped me a lot. Most teachers tell us to stretch our mouth all the way in a big smile for this sound. I thought it was an easy way, but I was not 100 % convinced because when you try to say the word "she", it's very difficult or feels awkward with a stretched mouth because of the "sh" right before the /i:/. But you teach us here that we don't really make a big smile to pronounce /i:/. Thanks to you, now I know it's in the arched tongue. Many other tips you give us are very useful. Thank you very much!
That's wonderful to hear. I'm so glad you're understanding the technicalities so well. Keep up the good work!
@@BaileyVarness Thanks very much! I'll keep working.
Thank you very much for your videos. I'm a non-native English speaker and I suppose your videos are made for native speakers of English who aspire to be professionals. But I can learn so much from your videos. I love the way you teach. You really show us how you specifically position your tongue and lips. I've been practicing Part 2 ~ this part 4 every day, one week for each part. I know they are helping me so much because I feel some difference now when I speak English. But I have some questions about some of the words you teach in this lesson. The "o" in hotel, mobile, obese, romantic, nomad, and most of the o sounds in the sentences here are diphthong /ou/, aren't they? I'd appreciate it if you could enlighten me on this. Thanks again for your great lessons.
I'm so glad you're enjoying them! So "o" vs "o•ʊ" the diphthong can often be interchangeable. It's mostly if the part of the word that has an o in it is not as emphasized, then it's the short o sound. If it is emphasized, they it's typically the diphthong o•ʊ. But it's really subtle and a really good question because it can be hard to hear! Hotel would sound more like like Hoe-Tell if it had the diphthong version and sound over stressed at the beginning of the word. But you'll get more comfortable with the differences with listening and practice I'm sure!!!
@@BaileyVarness Thank you so much for your in-depth explanation. Now I clearly understand, thanks to you! Your videos really help non-native speakers of English like me. Now I'm practicing this Part 4, and then I'm planning to go over Part 2 ~ 4 again. Then I'll go to Part 5 R Diphthongs. Actually, I want to go to the next lesson right away, but I tell myself to be patient. Your lessons are worth taking time. I appreciate your hard work.
@@katsu-jc5cp Thank you so much! Don't worry, you'll be great in no time!!!

Thanks
You're welcome!
lol, I have people tell me since I was 18 that I should do narration. So I just created an account. Gonna try this.
Awesome! I hope you like it!!!
Excellent series! After recording a book from Gutenberg, how would we become the rights holder or what to “sell the book on Amazon”? Do we need a 2nd “Rights holder” profile or what?
Yeah, I think you need to set up a Right's Holder/Author profile. I wish they made it easier to just do both narration and rights holder stuff in one place, but they do seem to be separate
Thanks for the speedy reply. I searched for a link to sign up as an author / RH. It took me to where there was a “Set up / Log in” but when I tried, I was redirected to my Narration profile. Ouch. Do you have the legitimate link or maybe the work around needed to set up both? TY,TY,TY!!!😅
@eaglespirithealth9797 Unfortunately, this isn't my area of expertise. I think you should email ACX. They may have a place for you to ask your questions in their help area. Sorry I'm not more help with this and good luck with your narrator journey!
Ohh, ok I’ll try asking ACX directly, while hoping what I found isn’t a hard line: “…Select your preferred account type, rights holder or producer…” Thanks again you Rawk!
@@eaglespirithealth9797 You're welcome and thanks again!
In this revision example where he just needs a little more time, is there any action you need to take or are you just waiting for him to click “accept”. Do you use any particular service for your backing tracks?
If I don't hear from them in a couple of days, I'll follow up to see where we are. If they say we're good, I'll turn the project in again. I typically check in every few days and gauge the response from there. It usually works itself out pretty quickly! For background music, I use Storyblocks. I talk all about that in my video here: th-cam.com/video/x9exHIOC_10/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gVY6S0atQtHSF6cL
Thank you so much, what you do is priceless.
You're so welcome! And thank you!!!
Hello Bailey Varness. I've been watching your videos for almost a year now about "Become an Audio Book Narrator". I am a newbie ENG-FR Voice actor and I learned and applied your teachings. Thank you for the great work you are doing!🙂
That's great! Thanks so much and I hope you love doing VO!!!
@@BaileyVarness Yes I do. I'm aware though it's a marathon 😅
You're right it is, but anything that really works does take time. Anyone who says it all happens overnight is lying! So it's awesome you're building on something you love!!!
Is there a rule of thumb with music? Like if I went to the Library of Congress & found some archived music from 100 years ago, is it safe to use for commercial purposes? 🤔
If a piece of classical music is now considered public domain, then yes, you can use it. However, you have to be careful, because just because the music is public domain, a particular recording of it might not be. For instance, anything written by Mozart is obviously public domain by now, but if the London Philharmonic records one of his songs and releases it this week, you’re going to have to wait 100+ years for that recording to become royalty free. But if you’re able to record it yourself, it’s all yours!
Love your content. I recorded my first audiobook ("AI For All" if anyone is interested!) last month and followed a lot of your advice in navigating the process. Had my demos put together professionally, but am looking at trying to put together a video demo myself and so it's good to have a resource like your channel!
Fantastic! I'm so happy for your success. Thanks so much!!!
This was SO helpful! I've been doing audiobook narrations and have been wanting to get going with commercial voiceovers but creating demos is what has honestly been holding me back. Thank you!
Oh good! If you've been doing narrations, you're already well on your way. I hope you like the commercial VO world and thanks so much!!!
How do we know how the end user is going to use the recording to be able to charge extras? Or are we on the honor system?
A lot of it is just the honor system. If they contact me before placing an order, I always ask how it’s going to be used so they know what they need to purchase. I had one client who never paid for rights, but I got so much work from them I just considered it a bulk discount. If you feel cheated, you can always block them in the future.
So glad to see you're back with another great series! Looking forward to what you have to say, doing my first book with ACX now and you've been a massive help with landing it!
Fantastic! I'm so happy for you. Glad to be back!
Welcome back and thanks for this. We already know the content will be great!

A great video, and I improvised it by using an app called BIGVU teleprompter, and following your suggestion, combine with audacity, makes it easy for me. A Big Thank you
Great idea! I never thought about using a teleprompter. Thanks for sharing!!!
Hello Bailey...I enjoyed your ACX training. A quick question- Gutenberg is used for creating audio samples that will appear in the profile section- am I correct? Secondly, the audio sample you will work on is the actual audition you are picking from ACX for review by the author. Am I correct? I am q total newbie - a mature person wanting to try it out after retirement. Thank you,
Thanks! Yes, use www.gutenberg.org/ to make samples for your profile. Then when you actually audition for something, you record a page from the audition itself so the author/rights holder can hear their work read by you
Bailey, you are a rock star! Well, I guess you're a vo star, but you get me! Thanks so very much for doing this and sharing so freely what you know. Your cheerful and positive presentation makes it seem possible for everyone to do this. I've been watching this for years and have finally gotten it together to follow your instructions, but even after so long, this is still so helpful. It's funny that the number of producers went from 37,000 in your vid to more than 1 million. I wonder if you'd still say us newbies can still make this work. Regardless, you pump us up so much, I feel it can't hurt to try! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I want to watch and listen to everything you produce. You are awesome!
Yes! Thank you so much!!! You're ready when you're ready, and I'm glad you finally feel ready. And yes there are a lot more narrators now, but my brand new students are still booking so go for it!
Super. Helpful. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu
You're very welcome!
This video was very informative! I am very new to narrating and would like to try it out. For someone like me who has no experience being of a narrator, how should I describe myself in the “Professional Summary“ description? Should I be honest of what is my occupation? Or should I be honest on how I am not a professional narrator/amateur?
You should call yourself a narrator even if you're just starting out. If you have a mic, a quiet space to work, and have created a sample demo then you're a professional! You don't need to share any other occupations you have because authors probably won't be interested, unless it's really cool. Just describe your voice and what you can read well!
@@BaileyVarness thank you!
Hey, I am using a Mac and they don’t have levelator for the newer Mac OS, do you know of an alternative? I have been using the ACX check tool from audacity and then using macros to set the levels for ACX but the levelator seems so much simpler. I used it when I was using a windows laptop and it was great, so I am hoping that there is an update for the Mac version or an alternative. Thanks, I appreciate your videos!!
