  • TCL's RayNeo X2 Smartglasses claim to be the first binocular full-colour display Smartglasses available commercially to the general public. First launched in China on October 13th 2023 with a limited release (I'm told only 100 units), they have grown in popularity and have been much sought after since then. Now, with an imminent launch coming up on Indiegogo in February 2024, I give my hands-on review of my experience with the Glasses.
    NOTE: TCL RayNeo did NOT provide me with the Glasses that I am reviewing; I paid for these out of my own pocket and any experiences discussed here in this video review are entirely my own opinion and not necessarily endorsed by TCL RayNeo themselves. Likewise, any viewing of the RayNeo OS and Apps demonstrated in this video may be subject to change and future experiences by others may be different to what is described and shown here.

    what about connecting to a PC? I've been working as a programmer for the last 3 years, first using rokid air 2 and now rokid max, I'm thinking of switching to the rayneo x2 option? Or should I not look in this direction for now and only as a replacement for a phone?

    Hello, some questions which probably a lot of people would like to hear answers for:
    1. How long does the battery last?
    2. How much does it drain the phone battery, considering it needs to be connected anyway?
    3. How comfortable is it to wear for an extended period?
    4. Is it waterproof?
    5. What about heat? Does it become warm, and if so, where - on the front or legs?
    6. Is there any pressure related to the device weight on the ears or nose?
    7. Is there any pressure related to the legs on the back of the head?
    8. Does it leave any marks on your face after wearing it for a while?
    9. How long does it take to charge it fully?
    10. Do they work without an internet connection on your phone for any function?

    • @techreviewsau
      @techreviewsau  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Wow - some really good questions! Here we go:
      1. How long does the battery last? A. Depends on what you're doing. Listening to music only with display off: Around 5 - 7 hours for me, with the odd Notification popping up when coming in. Video recording: Haven't tried recording until the battery is empty, sorry. Any App that uses GPS or ChatGPT Anime Character or anything AR will drain battery quickly.
      2. How much does it drain the phone battery, considering it needs to be connected anyway? A. Glasses can use its own built-in GPS, or use GPS through your Phone - and this will drain the battery faster. Haven't used the GPS until battery runs out, sorry. You CAN however, use them just fine while having them connected to an external battery (as long as it can output 1 Amp of Current), and it will also keep charging while doing so.
      3. How comfortable is it to wear for an extended period? A. Some people who wear ordinary Glasses have reported its not much more noticeable for them. I don't wear Glasses, but you will notice a little bit of weight (but not too much for me, anyway). I have worn them for several hours and can't complain too much.
      4. Is it waterproof? A. No, definitely not. I wouldn't recommend wearing them out in the rain, either.
      5. What about heat? Does it become warm, and if so, where - on the front or legs? A. It can get a little warm when using the S.L.A.M or AR functions, but the Processor is located on the very end of the left Temple, and well behind the ear so it can get up to around 35 to 42 degrees (or so) Celsius in this area - and it shouldn't bother you too much if it gets like that?
      6. Is there any pressure related to the device weight on the ears or nose? A. Weight on the ears and nose is balanced. You can pretty much balance the Glasses on the middle of the Temples and they will sit level.
      7. Is there any pressure related to the legs on the back of the head? A. A very little bit, and depending on the size of your head. The ends are in flexible Rubber and bendable, but it is designed to contour around the back of your head so they can't easily shake off.
      8. Does it leave any marks on your face after wearing it for a while? A. Not so much, maybe a little bit of red on the bridge of my nose and on top of my ears after a few hours?
      9. How long does it take to charge it fully? A. Charges fully from empty to full in just one hour.
      10. Do they work without an internet connection on your phone for any function? A. Yes - that's what sets these apart from anything else on the market (in their category). The Maps with GPS can work totally independently of any Phone. The only functions that really rely on use of your Phone (speaking for the factory-default Apps, that is) are the ChatGPT, Notification, and Music functions.
      Thanks for watching!

    Good first video review, could’ve zoomed in on the screen to make it more readable. I hope they can include a rubber cover for the top pogo pins. A single drop of rain or sweat from above could be very problematic. I’m pretty sold on the product, assuming they’ll over prescription lens options.

    • @techreviewsau
      @techreviewsau  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching!
      I know they do cover prescription lens options (at least for the ones first released overseas), and they insert from behind the display to attach to the Glasses.
      It's very difficult to get a good view looking out through the display with a Camera from behind (due to the Nose piece being in the way), and also it would require a small extendable lens - like that on a small pocket digital camera - to really capture what is viewed properly. The Lens would also need to be close to what the human eye is like (for it's field of vision) and also just as far away as your eye would be from the Glasses' display to really accurately portray the view. As said in the video though, the display is quite big and easily readable for me (and I don't wear prescriptions either). Like looking at a 23" Monitor Screen from 42" away (for height that is - the width is about 4/5ths as wide as a 23" Monitor).
      That said, I'm sure a Developer out there would have something that can capture the display screen and show it on a computer, but I don't have access to that unfortunately!
      I hear you about the cover for the Pogo pins - it would be nice if a rubber cover could be fashioned to cover them. There are two long slits (for the noise-cancelling mics) on the top of the Temples which could let water in if exposed enough to rain anyway. However, if you were to make one yourself I would suggest just the cap to cover the Pogo pins with a flat, thin arm coming off the side to go down between the Temple side and your face, held to the inner side with a sticky surface. What do you think - a money making idea for you there, hmmm?

      WaveGuide Glasses are not designed to watch full movies on. The Field Of View (FOV) is only 30 degrees diagonally. You would want something with BirdBath Optics (ie: Rokid or XReal) to watch movies on a big wide display in front of your eyes as they give the appearance of a 120" or larger screen, and they have resolutions of 1080p or higher. WaveGuide Glasses' Display Engines only do around 640 x 480 (max) resolution per eye at present. Thanks for watching!

    Have backed these for the US release on indiegogo. Don't see the shades mentioned so i really hope they are included. Actually, I just checked again on the FCC website (do a Google search for "RayNeo X2 internal photos" and you'll find the link) and there is a photo of the battery module on page 3 and it has a short connector coming from it that looks like the battery COULD be DIY replaceable (if you can source this exact battery). • @techreviewsau
      @techreviewsau  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for commenting! Be aware that the Meizu MYVU are only compatible with the Meizu 20/21 series, Huawei Mate40/50, Huawei P40/50 series, Xiaomi 12/13 series, and Apple phones running iOS13 or above (in other words: only certain phones made in China). Regarding "chunky"... Unfortunately, if you want features then they've got to be a bit "chunky" (think: Apple's AVP, Quest 3, etc.). I'm told that the RayNeo X2 Lite's for example don't have body-tracking sensors in them (which greatly enhance interaction with things you may be looking at with the Glasses like when using SLAM on the RayNeo X2's). If you think about how many people laughed at the Rokid Air and N(X)Real Glasses for looking ridiculous sitting so far forward on the nose away from your eyes, people ended up buying them like hotcakes anyway eventually.

      We haven't really had a sunny day for the last few weeks where I am due to back-to-back Cyclones off the coast for the start of the year unfortunately (when I've had time to go out and about). Maybe in a later video, I can post some then?
      The prototype model of these (the LEINAIO Air) could only do up to 1000 nits from their display engine originally, but RayNeo managed to increase that up to 1,500 nits making it even brighter, and it outperforms the INMO Air 2's dual colour display engine. Unless you are very bright Sunlight, the display is still quite viewable but that said, you can order the Shades cover for them if you wish to.
      As far as I am aware, they are the brightest (if not among the brightest) currently available to the consumer market in a full colour Wave Guide display.

Maybe it gets more attention after the indiegogo campaign, but I'd be really interested to develop for a platform like this with the "AR" objects being rendered on a phone instead of the glasses itself. Languages currently supported (for Language Translation only - NOT the Menu interface which is only Chinese or English) are: English, French, Chinese, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Italian. You can easily select the Primary Language and Secondary Language from any combination of the above if you wish to change the defaults, so for example you could translate your favourite K-Drama to English (see what they're REALLY saying - if you know what I mean!) or translate Japanese to Spanish, etc.
      One of the modes for translation will scan for the speaker's face and cleverly position the translation just to the side and to the bottom of their face, so you can still see their face and mouth moving without it being blocked by what's translated on your Glasses' display!
      Coming soon is the ability to translate Text you look at into another Language, either by looking at a page of it or just pointing to a word to translate. Thanks for watching!
