Welcome back, Loners! In this video, we looked at what happened when Sweden decided to switch to driving on the right side of the road. It was kind of weird but interesting to see the reason and process behind this. If you enjoy our content, please make sure to like and subscribe. Thank you all :)

You didn't listened in the beginning. They were talking about changing to right since 1927 and therefor all cars had the steering on the left side. Trafic had to stand still for many hours to let all workers change all traffic signs.

The moose sign switch is because when you're on the right you are closer to the forest and it would be less time to react to it. And so the sign shows the moose coming from the forest it's next to.

The steering wheel was on the left many years before switching to driving on the right hand side of the road because the two Swedish car manufacturers, SAAB and Volvo anticipated the switch to come long before it actually came.

No it wasn't "a ton of accidents" in connection with this shift. On the contrary actually as people now paid more attention. The shift was incredibly succesful.

The funny thing is that even when we drove on the left side of the road we still had the steering wheel on the left side of the car unlike the UK or Australia where they still drive on the left side but then have the steering wheel to the right. So this was crazy, since when you're behind someone and want to drive past them you had to steer all the way out to the right before you could see if you met another car driving in the opposite direction. So switching to drive on the right-hand side was a good decision. BTW, all of Europe except for the UK and Ireland, drive on the right-hand side of the street.

The only countries driving on the left in Europe are islands. The UK, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta. All other countries in Europe drive on the right side, same as in North America. Some Italian trucks in the Dolomite mountains have the driver's seat on the right side of the vehicle; this enables the driver to better estimate the distances on tiny mountain passes.

It is preferable to minimise the number of land borders where the side you drive on changes. This is why islands are the only ones in Europe that have not joined the majority on the continent and the world in driving on the right.
Globally, countries driving on the left are either islands (or island-like*) or have consolidated into three main contiguous blocks: 1) Southern Africa, 2) Indian subcontinent, 4) South East Asia (which maybe not coincidentally consists mostly of islands).
*Hong Kong and Macau were island-like for a long time, Surinam and Guyana have very limited road connections to their neighbours

Of course, the mooses weren't aware that we changed the lane we drove on. But most traffic accidents when you hit a moose happen when the moose suddenly runs up on the road on the right-hand side of you, since it is then straight in front of your car. If it enters the road to the left of you, you'll probably see it in time and can slow down or stop before the moose has entered your lane.

This was so well organized. Hardly any accidents. Hordes of police, and military were directing the change-over.

Only non essential cars were prohibited to drive from 1:00 to 5:00 on that Saturday morning. Not too many *have* to drive at that time. Most night shifts I have encountered have been between ten or eleven at night to six or seven in the morning, so those were probably commuting as usual. In the big city areas where the driving ban was longer, public transport like the subway, other trains and "essential" buses could take the load.
I suppose if you had to get to work at some remote but essential industry, like a power plant or similar, you would have permission.
The manufacture of cars with the driver's seat on the left had started much earlier, so most cars were already "adapted", and that's why the accidents actually had risen a little before the change to right side driving.
Living in Stockholm, the biggest drawback after was in my opinion that trams were replaced by buses. But at least we have our subway. That's like trams, but in the sewers. ;)

The history goes back to the time when knights were traveling and passed other travelers on the left side, leaving the swordhand towards the person going in the other direction.
As cars started going in trafic, drivers were sitting close to the ditch, as not to drive off road.
When number of cars increased and speeds got higher, the oppising traffic was more dangerous, so most countries switched to the other side of the road, in order to avoid frontal collision as drivers were closer to the other vehicle to have a better view.
There is still a lot of traditions from the old days, like you climb to the back of your horse from the left side, as knights had the sword on the left hip, so you don't swing that side over your horse when climbing up in full gear.

In Europe, only the UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus drive on the left as far as I know. Most countries with left-hand drive are former British colonies in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand).

There is no rule, that in country with right side driving you have to car with steering wheel on the left side of the car. However, due to safety, such solution is highly preferable, because it is easier for a driver to see incoming traffic when overtaking car in front of him.

Put the couch 1 feet forward put shelves in the free space. Put stuff there. There is free storage space between the couch and the wall too.
And being allowed to ask 'dumb' questions without ridicule is a mark of a happy and successful society.

Sweden is trying to copy us... lol
Education program is probably better described as an information campaign.
Revolutionary wars and Napoleon’s European conquests led to the spread of driving on the right to Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands. Napoleon ordered his armies to use the right-hand side of the road in order to avoid congestion during military manoeuvres. The nations that resisted invasion - Britain, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russia and Portugal - generally kept to the left.
Denmark had not been invaded by the French but changed in 1793. Russia did not switch until 1916. Czechoslovakia and Hungary were the last countries in mainland Europe to keep left, only changing to the right following invasion by Germany in the late 1930s.
Portugal made the change from left to right in the 1920s; countries with border crossings found there was great confusion if drivers were required to change sides of the road when passing from country to country. Sweden remained on the left until 1967 and changed to the right following a lengthy road safety campaign.

I learned to drive in a left hand drive car in central London, driving on the left side of the road. Although it was very difficult to learn to drive this way, I have since never had a problem driving in any country, whether driving on right or left of the car or the road. 😅

Don’t know if this has already been said but there would have been way fewer cars back then and people would have been extra cautious, driving slower during the transition. My parents remember this as a really big deal.

What a crazy process, even in the 60s already. The Swedes were really lucky that they managed to get this done. Today it would probably not be possible anymore, or way, way more expensive. And of course its advantageous to drive on the right side, like most other countries. Here in Europe its only the UK and Ireland who are stuck with the left traffic. I guess they would rather switch as well, but they waited too long. And they kinda handle it because they are islands. Same as Australia and Japan. But for other countries its a real pain, if they have direct borders where the cars have to switch sides.
But thats what you get if you cling to old traditions for too long. For example, why are railroad tracks are so narrow? Just google it - and I guess you will be surprised. :)

The point of flipping the moose is missed by both the video they are watching and by the pair in this video.
    Two things:
#1: Keeping the old signs, where the moose is going right, while moving the sign to the right side for right-hand driving, would essentially make a sign depicting a moose LEAVING the road. (Well, thats alright then - I'll just speed along as if nothing has changed.. 😂)
#2: Of-course, over all moose are just as likely to come from the left as from the right. But which situation is more dangerous? Well, if you're driving on the right then a moose coming from the right is more dangerous, because it immediately enters the side of the road where you are. So.. You need to have your focus more there than on the left side. The direction of the moose enforces this psychologically.
