2/24/2023 is the first time I've ever actually listened to Frank Zappa!!! I'm 53. I knew his name, but, DAMN, I've been missing out! I am ready to dig into his work. I'm so interested in anybody considered a genius! (I just started learning the guitar last summer... this dude is now a HUGE inspiration.)
“His spiritual force just made the music happen”. What an insightful thing to say. Very beautiful. You obviously love him and his music. As I and many others do. Frank would have loved that…Best reaction video about Frank I’ve seen.
Every time I hear Frank come in during this performance I get goosebumps. That tone. The confidence. The presence. The strength of. It gets me every time.
What’s even more amazing is he never repeated live solos during live performances. This solo was the first and probably the last time it was ever played. Frank stands alone musically. No one was like him. He literally wrote sheet music for every part of every song. Greatest musician of the twentieth century.
Bongo Fury and especially this song were my introduction to Zappa and his musical universe. Been a fan ever since. Recall reading Frank's interview in which he explained that his aim in a guitar solo was to come up with a melody on the spot. I see that in his guitar playing all the time
Wonderful Jack. You really put this into words so well. It is indeed tearing, flying, visceral, romantic music. Quite obviously in the top branches of the electric guitar tree, perhaps above all because of how strongly he makes you FEEL it with him. It makes me choke up too - and I usually go to his album 'Shut and play your guitar' to get lift off. Thanks for a great video
In my opinion, there are only two live recordings of a guitar solo that come to this level. The first is Hendrix Band of gypsies and this one. I started with Hendrix and soon after that with Zappa when I was 12. I am 62 now and until this day I never heard better solos than this. Zappa is god on guitar.
Couldn't say it better than you did Jack ! I've been listening to Zappa for 30 years now, and still I love his music so much ! Another amazing solo is Black Napkins from Zoot Allures, maybe you will comment on that one one of these days ?
Nicely articulated, Jack. This solo absolutely floors me, too. I get the impression that Frank lived in the moment as much as he good, and boy, was this one of those moments. It’s a kind of cosmic event, and Frank knew the conditions were right to bring it into existence. The solo in ‘Black Napkins’ (from the same tour, I think), has similar power. Cheers.
Loved Frank; Had all Adrien Below's albums. Sad dead center 2nd row at a Zappa concert in Milwaukee in the early 70s. He did his own sound checks - it never got too loud.
I remember first hearing this on record so many years ago now and being absolutely blown away. Franks guitar sounded like a chainsaw carving its way through the track and to my soul and i still get goosebumps whenever i hear this song. It makes me sad i never got to see him live. Another great man gone far too soon.
Aside from Franks great soloing, he was a specialist in getting the precise sound he wanted from his equipment that would impact the listener the most. You could have another great soloist do this song with all the right notes but it would never sound as good as how Frank could make it sound.
I was lucky enough to see Frank in one of his last live performances (Wembley 1988) and his playing was unlike anything I'd heard before. He had his patterns to fall back on as all guitarists do, but his managament of making lyrical playing to a variety of time signatures was just amazing. Of course he was a musical dictator, comfortable in knowing that his band was right where he wanted them to be, but he was never clinical. Viva Zappa
Absolutely brilliant .... Thank you, I really enjoyed watching this and hearing your break down of this incredible solo by Frank Zappa. I was fortunate enough to see FZ when I was a teenager on his last world tour. He was so unique the way he approached everything. Keep the videos coming .... Great work 👍
Saw franks son dweezil play at the sage in Gateshead around 10 years ago now..he finished his set with a huge screen at the back of the stage which had this video playing, someone even threw a toilet roll on stage which dweezil threw back just like his dad did..needless to say it was probably the best gig iv ever been to and met dweezil afterwards who stopped to talk to my son 16 at the time ,and me for about 20 minutes after the gig..great vid this solo always gives me goosebumps 👏🏻
Must have have been on his game at the Palladium in 1977, Black Napkins and this which I very much recognize, saw him in 1981 Painters Mill Star Theatre. Blew that 17 year old away, much more than Dental Floss
You know its a good solo when you start laughing and shaking your head haha what a fun riff (and tone)! Reminds me of freaking out every time I see Alex Lifeson playing Villi LA Strangiato with a busted up fingertip and still plays it flawlessly!
Ps. When I hear people bash on Zappa all they can say is that his playing sounds sloppy... but in my opinion that's part of the rock style when you wanna melt faces off - and you still have to come back into perfect time and clean playing so I never really understood how that could be considered "bad". Same case with Jimmy Page, they're both masters of that "sloppy" style and it sounds awesome. You said it best, it just sounds right all the way through and builds up perfectly. Awesome solo thanks for sharing!
@@kashinewell6239 I agree, when shredding was the thing in the 80s I couldn’t do the things that EVH, Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen did on the guitar. Neil Young and Zappa made me realize in the early 90s it’s not about being technical and flashy. Shut up N Play Yer Guitar is a great album
@@marlon-jl4ge oh hi thanks so much it's really great to know there's another huge Zappa fan out there. I'm really glad you're enjoying these videos looking forward to seeing you on the next one. Looks like you're an even bigger Zappa fan than me.
I appreciate your passion for FZ. I typically don’t like when people do Zappa reactions and then you find out they’ve heard the song as many times as any other real fan. But you have a way of doing that. Keep up the Zappa love!
I was lucky enough to see Zappa quite a few times, from 1968 to 1988. This video perfectly captures what it was like when Frank took a solo - straight up God tone, and God volume. Nearly out of the mix, but not. But the power of his guitar work was crushing. His level of intention, and control, was out of this realm. From stuff like this, which is just off the charts with power, to quiet, melodic pieces, Frank had total command of his guitar. And, his concerts were consistently the loudest, with the cleanest sound. He did three shows in one night at Constitution Hall in DC, all three shows were different, and his guitar work was never the same. The first show it was all atonal solos, just weird shit, and hard to listen to. A mix in the second show of that and more 'recognizable' stuff, and the third show was just wicked gut-bucket blues/jazz solos. Great video, gracias!
Sleazette was my first Zappa song and it's still one of my favorites along with Bongo Fury. Frank has had a huge impact on my guitar playing and so have you through teaching Indian music so it's really cool seeing you talk about him
Hey Jack, nice reaction, enjoyed that! I have been a huge Zappa fan since I was 13, which is more then 40 years (ouch). I enjoyed many era's and stages of his work, but this is a particularly striking one. Footage is from the 'Baby Snakes' concert movie, still available on DVD I believe, and the concert is from his legendary Halloween 1977 show in the Palladium NYC. We are very blessed that the Zappa Family Trust (since some time dismantled and all music rights sold to the UMG) has actually issued a special Halloween 77 box set (all 6 shows on USB + a 3 CD sampler (this version ofMuffin Man on cd 3). Luckily the full set of concerts can be also found on streaming services. So anyone looking for remastered high re audio, it is available. The show recorded on video was actually the 4th show on Oct 31 1977 (the actual Halloween show). I share you emotions about this particular track, however this is an equally mesmerising final encore of Black Napkins in the same show, the only time Black Napkins was played during this concert series. I have been lucky to have seen FZ live twice, Rotterdam NL in 84 and 88). The 88 band and tour is overal probably my favourite, but from a rock and guitar perspective (incl some crazy synth work and drum solos) this line up is unique an very very attractive! (PS I am not a guitar player, but used to be a aspiring keyborad player). Cheers and regards from Brisbane Oz.
Hello and thanks for your comment. The Baby snakes film is amazing I would always show that to people at party's when I was a teenager....... funny times. The Black Napkins solo from that concert is unbelievable as well yes.
Watching Frank on stage there seems like times where his fingers couldn't keep up with his brain. HE knew what he wanted to play as he was always many steps ahead in his mind, just the physical movements were probably impossible for ANY human to play. He ripped at it 100% though and if there was a mistake then that was part of the uniqueness of all his guitar solos.
Love Zappa; loved the video. But given your background with guitar and Indian music, I'd love to hear you react to Shawn Lane's Guitar Solo Improv (San Diego 2001). All the best.
I really love Adrian Belew, and he was really scorching on the guitar. But, from Frank’s first note, the audience was hammered with this seismic riff. It made it seem like Adrian was playing a toy guitar with a crank on it. I have been to shows where even the security guards couldn’t take their eyes off of Frank! They realized they were experiencing a force of nature.! really great review!
