Richard the cacti guy is awesome. I love this series, I requested a Cacti video and we got 3! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and letting us listen to Richards knowledge as well. Now I’m exited for my cacti to grow larger so I can propagate more!
Everyone! Don't be deceived by Richard's elephant-hide skin! Practically all Opuntias have glochids, tiny barbed spines, the classic microdasys bunny ears is one of the worst! If you get the glochids in your skin, first try dragging sticky tape across your skin. Then if you can't get the remaining ones out with tweezers, try spreading PVA glue over the area, let it dry, and when you peel it off the glochids should come with it (~8.
So absolutely agree! ~ I especially cannot handle Opuntia microdasys at all. Even wearing leather gloves, the glochids get everywhere and are near microscopic. They get lodged inbetween fingers, and sting like nettles! Never tried the PVA route for removal...clever idea ~ will try it next time!
This morning I went to our local Boot-Sale, saw some Cacti for sale and since I was a big fan back in the early 60's when I was 11/12 years old and grew them as a little money-earner, I've never had them since. I decided to change all that and bought a couple of small ones. Got home and thought I'd better see what 'not' to do if I wanted them to flourish so went on TH-cam (of course) saw your friendly smile and kind eyes and thought I'd check out your channel. Glad I did, this little series with Richard was really just what I needed - Great stuff. Have subscribed for more plant-growing stuff - Cheers - Keep 'em comin' :-)
Wow! Richard is very knowledgeable and super voice that it make it so much talented . I'm so happy that you did a serie about cactus because they may look easy but is hard if we don't know the basics . Thanks for sharing ! :-)
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, your personality is delightful and the information you provide is so useful and interesting and inspiring . And Richard needs his own channel!! Love him.
I would much love a bit of info on his double stack barrel wood stove, and any other winter greenhouse heating tips this gentleman may have. Another great video, thanks.
If you flick sideways with your finger, at the bunny ear itchy-fuzzies, it takes them right off, just hold your hand to the light, to see where they are 🙂🌵
Be careful with those bunny year prickly pears, I was transplanting the variety with a white glochids and they don't even stick in you or hurt at all but one of them blew up and lodged itself into my upper eyelid and broke off and scratched my eye for 9 days every time I blinked until I finally made it to the eye doctor and it could be pulled out, it was an extremely miserable experience. I went to the hospital after 2 days but they were not very helpful and said they couldn't see anything and just gave me some ointment LOL
Brasstard 7.62 I literally had the same thing happen to me, I was repotting my bunny ear and moved some hair from my face and I could feel the little fucker land in my eye, it attached to my eyelid and I hated my life for the next 15 hours until I could call the local eye doctor, she dropped what she was doing on a holiday to remove it from my eye, very nice lady!!
WOW, thank you soo much for sharing. I have a bunny ear cactus and Im usually careless when handling it. I definitely do not want to get it in my eye, so ill be investing in goggles, long tweezers, and gloves.
I was super surprised how easily he just grabbed them barehanded lol. I just transplanted mine with gloves and I'm still picking hairs off my bleeding hands :'(
Great video! For some reason It made sense to me to water my cactus propagation after I put them in the substrate...they almost always rotted. I couldn’t understand why(TILL NOW!) Ugh! Well at least I know now ...thanks to you both! Seems so simple but you think they need water to send roots but cactus species are different in that way with propagation. This very well saved my propagation coming this spring! Again, thank you!
My cacti thrive!! Actually because I live in the desert and I’m a negligent plant owner. BTW, your chicken no doubt thinks it’s a parrot, lol! It’s really a sign that she loves you very much. Do you always travel with her?? Love your videos. 😊
Love the series. When you take a cutting and put it into soil though, how do you know when roots have formed and it is OK to start watering? Or is it just generally safe to wait 2 - 3 weeks and then start?
Richard mentioned organ pipe clusters. I have a old cactus very tree like with its woody trunk. It has a few groupings of tight "organ clusters" my question is should these clusters be thinned out at any point to help sustain healthy growth? also thanks very much for the information of propagation of cacti
On the fifth minute you said that when there are roots it's OK to give water after you put it in soil, but when there are no root no Water! Are this good either for cactus and for succulent & How do you know when there are roots.
How do you get rid of scales on cactus or succulents? I’ve gotten scales on both the cactus I had to throw out a couple years ago but last month I noticed my beautiful epiphyllum
I would not touch a bunny ear unless your hands are calloused cause those tiny tiny spines will embedd itself and they are not easy to get rid off ...and yes its painful...
I wish the cactus series were longer than a trilogy!.
Best info with this guy! Keep it simple with cactus!😍
WE NEED MORE RICHARD!!!
What an amazing singer Richard is ! Bravo 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Ouch those bunny ears get me and they get under my skin with mad irritation. That Cacti Guy is a beast.

LOVE Richard!!! Wonderful singing!!! The cactus were fun also. Thanks so much Summer Rayne!
Love Richard’s enthusiasm and knowledge!

Points out a special cactus kids can touch. Touches every single cactus with his bare hands.

I thought the same thing!! I swear any of them cacti with those you don't even have to touch they just leap on you somehow! LOLOL
1:42 and 10:29 Which species is this? I have the same and have been looking for its name for ages.
And I was loving it even before he sang! 🌵
Them: "Ahh, ants!"
Ants: "Ahh, humans!"
Oh my word, I'm in love with Richard, lol! I want him to come sing to my plants! :)
Looks like pure heaven!! Cacti, pet hen and opera!!!
This guy is cooler than cool. And a singer to boot!
Richard is such an awesome duder!

that was so fun and insightful! Great voice on that man at the end too!
That gentleman is a Cacti Gandalf. Love to listen his advices
Super helpful info about watering and not watering!
How is it even possible that your videos don't have thousands of "likes"? You should have your own cable TV show :)
Richard makes my heart happy. You're adorable chicken and her love for you is also heart warming!!

I would much love a bit of info on his double stack barrel wood stove, and any other winter greenhouse heating tips this gentleman may have. Another great video, thanks.

Richard Einstein Cacti Guy...Lovely!
I love your channel so much it helps take my mind of stressful things and just focus on the joy of cute plants!! :)))
love it!
Some cacti magic! But one questions though, not to water the propagated bunny ears at all until they root?
Very informative video, thank you! and very lovely chicken! :D
Awesome !
If you flick sideways with your finger, at the bunny ear itchy-fuzzies, it takes them right off, just hold your hand to the light, to see where they are 🙂🌵
He’s a good singer
Best video ever 😍
That guys AWESOME! Great voice:)

Wow. Thanks for the word of caution! I won't be buying one of those.

Bravo & thanks from Australia 🐨
Wow! Great voice!
When that chicken jumped on her back I screaming. I would have died!!

Id love to see him and maybe adopt a cactus from him but sadly I live in Europe
hello from spain!! the thorns of the opuntia "bunny" are dangerous, I am surprised that he handles it without gloves.
He's very interesting. I didn't really get much succulent propagation from him though but very interesting. Watch all three with him would watch more
My cacti thrive!! Actually because I live in the desert and I’m a negligent plant owner. BTW, your chicken no doubt thinks it’s a parrot, lol! It’s really a sign that she loves you very much. Do you always travel with her?? Love your videos. 😊
He's a natural...
Yaaaasss 👏👏👏👏. He kilT it.
Ok but when the chicken puted itself on your shoulder and started squaking
Try to put the chicken in your head😄🌵, Just kidding.... Very informative and realistic video in cacti propagation
He's like a wholesome older alternate-universe-version of Gale from Breaking Bad. Loved it!!
My favourite part of the video was the chicken 😂❤❤
Love the series. When you take a cutting and put it into soil though, how do you know when roots have formed and it is OK to start watering? Or is it just generally safe to wait 2 - 3 weeks and then start?
Give it a very gentle tug. If it resists, it has roots. If it moves, it doesn't have enough roots.
After you pick off the pups will the mother plant keep producing more pups ?
He needs his own TH-cam channel!!!!
Richard mentioned organ pipe clusters. I have a old cactus very tree like with its woody trunk. Wow Amazing singer Mr Richard! Btw where can I find this guy? I live in NYC , thanks
Im amazed all those plants grow up north im from florida im guessing u have 2 keep them inside or in a green house during winter :(
In the UK the first cactus is also refered to as 'Mexican sombrero plant'
I can't understand how this person handles cactus bear handed without problem.
On the fifth minute you said that when there are roots it's OK to give water after you put it in soil, but when there are no root no Water! Are this good either for cactus and for succulent & How do you know when there are roots.
So, how can you tell they have roots? To start watering?
How do you know the propagated plants have rooted for watering? I am new, sorry.
Not far from Paoli.
Wondering- where to purchase from Richard?
Trying to focus but chicken had me side tracked. Lol
the chicken!!
How do you get rid of scales on cactus or succulents? I’ve gotten scales on both the cactus I had to throw out a couple years ago but last month I noticed my beautiful epiphyllum
can you do a video on the soil mixes you use for different plants.
thank you
I would not touch a bunny ear unless your hands are calloused cause those tiny tiny spines will embedd itself and they are not easy to get rid off ...and yes its painful...
👏👏👏
