  • In clawhammer banjo, at least 90% of fretting hand techniques take place during the upstroke. Using this fact, we can refine our phrasing using our built-in metronome: our striking hand motion.

For all those on the fence about joining Tom’s Patreon, I have found it to be the most useful thing to accelerate my playing. It’s really a lot of fun and there’s a bunch of excellent content. Highly recommend it!

Getting me an open back fretless. Can’t wait. You got any vids on your patreon about playing the blues? You hardly ever hear blues on the banjo and that’s what I want to master.

Nice! Blues on the banjo...hell yeah! Actually, we just started a module on Ola Belle Reed. Both of the tunes we're doing have wonderful bluesy elements with pentatonic runs and string bends. I see fretless banjo as being very much immersed in blues phrases and sensibilities. Hope to see you there! Tom

Hi Tom. I'm so happy to find out about your channel!
I have a Deering 6-strings banjo, with a fantastic sound. I'm really scared to go for a 5 strings banjo as the way to play and the tuning is quite different... but I think I should go for it anyway...
What would be your advice to go for a banjo learning process without interfering with my guitar "still learning" curve?
God bless you and your channel.
    Have a good one!

2 years too late I know, but picking up a banjo whilst I was learning to play guitar as a teenager was one of the best decisions I made, all skills in each instrument are transferrable in some way and it was the greatest boost to developing a unique style which I still utilise today.
