    David, Oh I love it! I personally flew helicopters with Doug Wheelock many years ago. Doug was just a 1LT then,we were stationed in Hawaii. He was a joy to fly with then and clearly he has not changed a bit. I am THRILLED for his success but I have been unable to congtatulate him or send my hellos. Perhaps I need to get a Ham radio. Or.. could you please pass on my congratulations and best wishes to him? Please tell him that Bill Atwood from 25th send best wishes for safe and success flt.

    Dr. Pruett, I'm watching this TH-cam post in April of 2014, and I wanted to congratulate you on your enthusiasm as expressed during your QSO with NA1SS in 2010. It is refreshing to me that even today, amateur radio still has the ability to instill excitement and adventure, just as it did for me when I was first licensed in 1971. 73 and great job in showing our hobby in such a positive light! Awesome contact man! I guess that's one of the perks of living on the west coast is you get first shot when they come over the horizon, and you get time for an extended contact like that. By the time they get overhead for me, everyone in 12 states are firing off their QSL, so it's a battle of transmit power and timing, and I haven't won one yet! 73's!

  • @BasementGunshop
    @BasementGunshop 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Watching in July 2016. Less than 6 months and you QSO'd the ISS ! ! ! ! Jealous doesn't begin to describe it ! ! ! Way to GO ! ! ! ! I'm in rural PA and still trying to make that contact ! ! ! I hope they sent you a QSL card. That would be a great trophy to frame. Ok, all that being said, your video had some GREAT information about compensating for the downlink doppler so thank you very much for including that and showing your antenna setup.

    • @BasementGunshop
      @BasementGunshop 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      One question. How much power were you using to make the QSO ?

  • @MYKHRONICLES
    @MYKHRONICLES 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The QSO with the Space Station are definately an achievement to be proud of, especially for being licenced so recently. You are certainly an inspiration for my 10 year old son to get his Tech Licence. Dad's qso's across the country isn't a cool enough inspiration, however anything that gets him excited to get licenced is great. thanks for the time that you put into these vids.
    The radio you have chosen to use (Yeasu 857) is one of the finest portables on the market. A fine set up indeed.

    Love it. Seeing you get excited when you made contact got me giddy, too. I'd probably flip out and draw a complete blank and not know what to say. I'd be sure to rehearse so I didn't screw up. I've thought about getting my license for years. I need to stop putting it off. Thanks for all the great links and the fun, informative video.

    Amazing. For the people who think the ISS is not real...how precise would a 24/7 radio operation like this need to be with people contacting the ISS from all over the World? Not only is it visible with the naked eye on a clear night but it is also a spacecraft which can be personally contacted as it goes over... and the clarity begins to breakup as they pass by. Great video thanks for sharing, deserves some more views.

Would have been nice to have received a QSL card. I've also had a QSO with W1AW with a Yaesu FT-1000 Field, 100 watts, with a G5RV. VERY nice QSL card. Isn't this a fun hobby ? 73, W9BAG.

    Hey David can you please bring these videos back and try making contact with the international space station today on the new repeater system? A bunch of schools have done this and they have succeeded. I bet you can too.
    If you can use the same radio that would be really cool to watch. If you get them, can you please ask them what kind of antenna they use for their ham radio on the space station?
