First time I attended a Victor Wooten's masterclass was in 2004 at the BPC when I was still a student at Berklee. My first impression was that he must be the wisest musician on earth. Fast forward to 2018 and after watching many more of Vic's masterclasses, I still feel that he's the wisest musician on earth. He has inspired me in not only the way I make music, but also how I live my life.

The stuff that Victor Wooten talks about sound basic. But even with years of dedicated practice one might miss all this and still sound amature. Victor is like a prophet who can change music education forever. I wish his aproach becomes mainstream one day.
Fantastic Victor: No one teaches feel, or rather let me rephrase it, discover feel already in them. It is usually left for you to find it years later organically. what a waste!. Excellent good demonstration of feel. The first time somebody actually conveys and performs the power of feel so simply using chromatism. Absolutely Great !

Been to music school for years when I was a kid. Took me a decade to get a few principles explained here. Not a single teacher were able to tell things simply...Like, how did they put us, 10 years old kids, in front of a music sheet with a pen and expecting us to be musicaly good, curious and interested? I picked up the bass again 3 years ago after seeing some Wooten's videos. His words have always been followed by a succesful learning and it's only TH-cam videos....I owe him so much. This camp is a blessing for musicians! Mr Wooten please never stop being you.
So Victor is confirming something that has always come natural to me as a musician with zero understanding of theory: Music starts in the head. My only formal music education was 6th and 7th grade choir class, and what little knowledge ive retained ive only applied to singing (obviously) but as a guitar player it didnt help. So i play guitar with absolutely no idea what im actually doing musically speaking. I cant tell you what key im playing in or what scales and chords im using. I just try to find the notes on the intrument that fit whatever jam is going on in my head. My mind is constantly playing music if its not occupied by something more urgent. Music is emminating from my thoughts and my guitar is simply the tool to express that music.

To me, I don’t agree there are 30 keys under the system of 12 equal temperament. I will classify major and minor as modes instead of keys because what makes a key is due to the tonal centre from my point of view. When C is the tonal centre, the musical gravity or you can say the ultimate goal of the music is on the note C. So no matter in C major, C minor, C Aeolian, C Lydian ...etc. They also have the tendency goes to the C, the tonal centre. So, when C major goes to C minor, I won’t say it’s a change of key, I will claim it as change of mode, cuz the tonal centre doesn’t change. What do guys think?
As much as Victor and I can disagree about minor actually being a mode, or that there are actually seemingly infinite scales, I still love every one of his talks. Also, I get what he is saying about “where is the theory of other things in music”. Dynamics and articulation are usually included in contemporary music theory discourse, in fact. But I think what he is really getting at is that music theory tends to lack the other human aspects of music. Music theory, like the STEM fields, reflect well the human aspects of organization, categorization, or description. But they often miss out on the psychological or philosophical aspects like intuition, perception, interpretation, impression, entertainment, and complex emotions. I think music theory is often changing in a more considerate way regarding those aspects. But perhaps music theory is the mathematics to music’s psychology field. They both are important to understanding the function of music and in creativity. Yet, are totally not mutually exclusive.

I could even teach classes like: "Disappointment: How to Deal With Being a Mediocre Musician" or "Regret: Admitting to Your Parents That They Were Right About What a Waste of Time and Money a Music Degree Is" or "Bowing Out: How to Pawn a Drum Set" PS - You could not transcribe that piece of music using only three notes. Close. Still a pretty good exercise.
So I have to renege all my previous comments on this (on all videos) I still disagree though here’s why: you can write a song in ALL scales which would be the key signature. I want a dialogue in this. If I write a song in the KEY (key signature) of C7, can you tell me I’m wrong? Can you tell me I wrote it in a different key and changed the name? No. And you can’t just say it’s a chord substitution. The key signature C7 is only C7 like the key signature of F is Only F (one flat 4).. now I tell the band the progression is a 7-3-6-2-5-1.. so when we play the 7 its a flat 7.. how does this not flow like any other key and chord progression? The key has a key signature.. the point of the key signature is to tell you WHAT (not how many) flats and or sharps to play.. so if I wrote a song with a key signature of C7 what other key could that be BUT C7.. the seven isn’t playing a Cmaj7 it’s a C7 as in dominate 7 as in flat 7. So I wouldn’t write the key signature at having 1 flat because then you would think F. F flats the 4 But it would be C7 which flats the 7.. which is the mixolydian mode/scale.. Now this is why I disagree because victor said Dorian is not a key it’s a mode.. well Ionian is a mode , aeolian is a mode; You can say if you want writing in C7 is just C maj with a flat 7.. and I could say writing in C minor is just C major with a flat 7-3-and 6.. just because old theory says (for the sake of general understanding) that all other modes beside Ionian and aeolian aren’t keys.. doesn’t mean that’s right. It’s a very limited way of approaching music. When you write a blues song.. you do not have to write it in major or minor, you could write it in the blues scale. Even though blues is minor scales played over major keys .. you can write it differently.

IMHO it's the blues that make it sounds correctly. You can switch from F major to F minor instantly if you improvising in blues, hence the blues scale. Furthermore, this 'rule' may even applied not only on blues music solely. I've heard similar stuff from ballads, pop musics, and jazz of course.
