    Let's see how many comments I get correcting me on the pronunciation of "Lisle" lol

    • @ComicalCowboy1911
      @ComicalCowboy1911 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      OMG WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!!! IT'S "LIE-UHL"!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! Sorry I had to! LOL! XD I had a family friend with that name years ago so I always knew how to pronounce it. However when it came to spelling it.................that's where my "Lisle" moment came in LOL! Also I kinda rushed my last cam bearing replacement a few months ago when I built my Magnum again. I can never get the oil holes perfect on the first try! If I have to reinstall new cam bearings more than once I get really pissed lol! Otherwise I think cam bearings are kinda fun to do! If you got all the holes well lined up on the first try you're a legend!

    I know you know but the caliper jaws were set to deep in the bearing to measure the wall thickness, the tapered tips of the jaws are for that reason to measure thickness of the wall. we probably only talking bout a couple thousands or so thats why we call them veneer calipers very nears cuz they get you close but not perfect readings, no matter what brand or who is using them.

    ive never done a magnum but the older la blocks the #2 and #4 bearing feeds oil up into the heads and into the rocker shafts and im not positive but i think the magnum feeds through the pushrods like a chevy. i take a marker and mark the block and the back of the bearing. the 408 that im build now ,i let the machine shop install them since they bored and cleaned my block.

    When you reinstalled the cap on the back of the motor, how far did you hit it in? Do you take it as far as it can go? I'm doing one myself and not sure if it needs to contact the cam or sit flush with the outer edge of the block

    Are the magnum and LA cam bearings the same? LA block has additional oil holes on 2&4 bearings for rocker shaft oil passage so placement of those oil holes is also crucial. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TheGasTap

      Yes sir. Same part #. If you look at my bearings, 2&4 have 3 oiling holes.

    After installing the bearings, is there anything special about how to install the rear camshaft seal/plug?

    • @TheGasTap

      Just like installing a freeze plug.

      It’s hard to get the wrench on from the top. It just takes a little longer.

  • @Keith_Thomson

    I know this is about cam bearings, but what main bearing set do you use?

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used an Engine Tech rebuild kit. The bearings in the kit were marked Kings. There’s a video on my channel of the build.

  • @ZPositive
    @ZPositive 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you're installing the main caps before the cam bearings, why not also install the heads? Seems to me the heads might also affect the shape of the block.

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      good point. I don't have an answer for you. I'm not sure if any of it matters. I'm just taking information that is available and applying it for the best possible results in my Garage build.

    • @ZPositive
      @ZPositive 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGasTap I agree it's probably a negligible improvement. But now that I've had my eyes opened by that Hot Rod article, the geek in me will probably have a hard time _not_ also torque-ing the heads with some old head gaskets before the cam bearings.

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol. Cool article right? I’m always reading!!!

  • @Tonys_Garage66

    So in my situation I was just doing a cam swap and I noticed the cam bearings are worn and need replaced. My lower end is not taken apart but my engine is on a stand with the top end torn completely off. Is it still possible to replace these bearings as it sits? I have never taken pistons and crank out before so I'd like to leave the lower end alone.

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve done it before. It just takes a little more time.

      @@TheGasTap Well I'll be attempting it over the weekend. I just got done rebuilding my heads with Hughes valve springs and lapping my valves in. Hopefully I knock them out and the new ones in without any huge problems.

    I almost bought this one. The PT tool version of this is junk. The rubber sleeve would break all of the. The main concern is how most of these tools are made to work best with a small block Chevy.

  • @steveproctor1748
    @steveproctor1748 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate to buy that tool now. I should have bought one years ago. I used to take my blocks to have them vat cleaned and have cam bearings and freeze plugs installed. My shop is gone now and has been gone for years. I told a friend of mine that you have to build a trust with the person who does your machine work, and I honestly don't know who to take it to anymore. And I'm the only one I trust to build my engine's right.
