Same!! I also got shinobi for that same year christmas. My favorite games for SMS are wonderboy 2 & 3, golden axe warrior, kung fu kid and shinobi. The worst game for me by far is called Aztec Adventure. It looked so cool with all the weapons but man it was impossible to play so hard!
Growing up I started with a Sega Master System while my best friend had the NES. He had Zelda and I loved that game and found Golvellius for the SMS and it was actually a great game! Hope others will find it and enjoy it as much as me! (First system was actually a Atari 5200 but my Master System holds a special place in my heart)
I remember that one of my cousins had a Sega Master System with a small handful of games that included "Ghostbusters", "Shooting Gallery", and "After Burner". :)
Master System's graphics chip is really powerful for its time. It's basically half the Genesis' VDP in terms of background layers, sprite palettes, and sprite size, with a quarter of the RAM and an eighth of the color palette. To put that into perspective, imagine if the PlayStation could draw half as many polygons as the PlayStation 2 (~10 million), or if the PlayStation 2 had a quarter of the VRAM of the PS3 - that would have been 64 MB.
My first console. I was the only kid in my school that owned one, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Got bit by the nostalgia bug and actually just picked up a console plus Choplifter and Black Belt. Plan on picking up Ghostbusters, Rambo, and Zillion next.
As you know, here in Europe (and in Brasil) Master System was very succesful and had more games released than Japan and USA.We really loved it here and enjoyed it. A must have game is Master of Darkness (best Castlevania clone-also released for US)
Definitely an underrated console. I would say that the biggest issue with the Master System is they just didn't release enough games for it. I enjoyed mine as a kid, but I moved on to the Nintendo pretty quickly because they were just releasing so many games...and because all of my friends here in the USA had Nintendo.
I only have one of these games, lol. Rampage looks good! My collection so far: - Outrun - Phantasy Star - Golvellius - Cloud Master - Quartet - Enduro Racer - Golden Axe Warrior - R-Type - Y's The Vanished Omens - Wonder Boy in Monster Land *(The game that hooked me on Sega as a kid)* - Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap - Sagaia (Darius II) - Rainbow Islands - Hang On/Astro Warrior - Hang On/Safari Hunt - Rocky - Alien 3 - Rastan - Kenseiden - Spell Caster - Time Soldiers
Nice list of games. Have a look out for a great game called G-loc a great plane shooter after burner style.or similar to Airwolf on nes only a lot better. Also star wars was so much better on ms than nes, shame only it was only released in Europe not a problem for me as I'm English but a shame the rest of the world got the poorer nes version. Sonic 1 is also way better on ms than mega drive. Rocky looked great for the time, still never finished it Drago is impossible, have you beat him?
Oh hey, me too re: Wonderboy II. That and number 3 are probably my single player picks for this machine (: Although I never had Phantasy Star. That likely would have been a serious contender if I had it at the time. Nice list (:
many reviewers generally tend to ignore "rpg elements" in games. however it's very important in terms of classical games, while cross-genre elements were a way to provide a unique gaming experience back then. congrats for your concern.
Great list man! I actually grew up playing 8 of the 10! I was one of those weird kids in the USA who had a Sega Master System before I had a Nintendo. I got the Master System on Christmas in 1988, and I still have it to this day. I actually rented Black Belt on a Friday, and played it all weekend and beat it when I was a kid. I was like 10 at the time. More favorites of mine that I would add to the list are: 1. Vigilante (some may say this game sucks, but I enjoy some bad games because of memories that are tied to them.) 2. The Ninja 3. Global Defense 4. Rocky 5. Astro Warrior
Huge fan of your videos and I’ve been slowly working my way backwards. Awesome to see how far you’ve grown in presentation and how well produced your newer videos are, but this format is awesome and really helps connect with your audience (imo). Ever consider bringing back this more one on one style with you improved production and presentation?
i had really good grades in elementary school....so i was able to beg my parents for a nes....when we finally went to buy one, they were all out...all they had was sega...so between sega and nothing i chose sega. and there are some pretty good games. i agree with most of the ones you mentioned, specially double dragon, ghostbusters and rampage. off the top of my head i would add 3 more games to that list: phantasy star(you have it as your background music!) wonderboy in monsterland zillion eventually i also got a nes....and later on a snes....and then a gameboy and that was it for my consoles.... i agree that the double dragon version of the sms was by far the superior one. it was the closest to the real arcade.
Some Master System games look way better than the 8bit. Can’t help but to imagine what games we’d got if Nintendo didn’t have such a grip on the market with publishers back then. Imagine Capcom, Konami & others making games on the SMS! I personally liked Psycho Fox, Batman & the Sonic games which I had to import.
Outrun is one of my many fond childhood memories of owning a Sega Master system. Plus Hang On and Safari Hunt that was built into my Sega Master System. In the 80s, I ordered Sega Master System from Fingerhut because they didnt sell NES. Since the Sega Master game cases are sealed with two Phillips screws, it's easy to be defrauded by dishonest people. I remember when I was a kid. On the last day of school, I traded my prized Vigilante cartridge to someone for their Shinobi cartridge. When I got home and put Shinobi into my Sega Master System, Walter Payton Football came on. I was one mad kid! Was unable to contact the punk thief's parents, since I didnt have any information besides the thief's name and teacher's name. Needless to say, he did not return to the school for the next school year. So I never saw him again. But I definitely learned my lesson.....verify cartridge before buying or trading.
One thing I loved about those games is that Sega was plastered over everything so you knew what you playing on, It gave a certain feel to the games on the console
Kenseiden was my absolute favorite MS game, I've spent a incredible amount of hours and maybe finished it more than a hundred times. The music, the general game atmosphere, the power ups, the boss fights, it was epic.
Love this video. The Sega Master System 2 was my very first games console when i was a kid and came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in. Loved it. I am nearly 44 years old and looking at picking one up again.
Your channel is new to me and it’s awesome. This video is solid for sure but man it’s totally impressive how you’ve evolved not just in the presentation but even your word choice and the way you describe things! Wow. Outstanding!
Awesome that you included Reggie Jackson's Baseball! That was a childhood game of mine. It really is a great sports title to have. I think I'll add Ghostbusters to my list. Great video!
I honestly thought about it. I do like to advise cheaper games as first purchases, however. Once you get up around $50 for old games, people tend to bulk.
I know both SMS and NES are eight bit but it seems like Master System tends to look better and more colorful than the NES. Reminds me of a precursor to Gameboy vs Game gear
Thank you for this. I love stuff like this. Grew up with most of the consoles from 8/16/32/64 bit thanks to a nice circle of friends and relatives. I always felt very blessed
I'll never forget the day I got double dragon for the master system and it literally felt like I had an arcade machine at home. I was lucky to have had all of these games and they were classics. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
Mmm, though Space Harrier looks choppy nowadays, it was pretty rad back in the day. Action Fighter was also really fun I thought. Like an 8-bit Spy-Hunter clone done right.
@@CSGraves Oh yeah, Action Fighter was great! (going through comments getting memory jolts). I actually didn't much like AB and SH even though they are iconic.
Yay! You loved Double Dragon! Me too! I grew up playing it all the time at my friend Michael's house as a kid. We LOVED it. I still think it is a fantastic port of the arcade, much better than the NES version.
What a fantastic system. I'm from the UK this machine was huge over here . some good games :- fantasy zone, california games, the ninja ,Alex Kidd shonbi world ,miracle world, wonder boy series, the list goes on. My first ever games system £89 from the local Tescos.
Rampage was one of my favs along with Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Zillion. Surprised Rastan didnt make your list. I played all the games on your list
Great video Sega Lord X!! The Master System has many great games. The Asterix games are somes of the best platforms of 8 bits consoles. Also the Wonderboy are excellent. I really like Master of Darkness, which is very simiolar to Castlevania, but with better graphics and more scary ambientation.
Loved the SMS! I would add Quartet, a great co-op shoot 'em up. Pro Wrestling was fun. Phantasy Star was my favorite RPG of all time. Zillion was a great "Metroidvania" before it was a thing. Nice list! For sports, I recommend Great Volley Ball against another player for great fun.
Zillion is still awesome to play, a "Metroidvania" with the stealth aspect of Metal Gear built in...Phantasy Star has since received a superior port to the Switch and superior remake on the PS2 and is also available in the GBA, PS3, Wii, and AtGames Genesis Flashback though, so I'd rather not collect it at the price I've seen it go for in recent years. And yeah, the size of those guys' tits in Pro Wrestling...a TOTALLY awesome game!
@@JohnnyProctor9 roms. as a matter of principle i oppose remakes(with extremely few exceptions, like battlestar galactica, and the office). the original phantasy star is quite awesome.....that's how i learned to navigate mazes without having a map....
@@sabin97 - Same here, but the Switch port is the same exact game with an optional easy mode, optional auto map, and optional FM audio from the Japanese version (which sounds like crap to my ears)...also a counter which keeps track of how many of each monster you kill except unfortunately for the Saccubus, because even if you kill it you don't technically kill it (it was just a dream).
I can relate to hearing the Master System talk back in the 80s. Mine was Great Baaketball. "3 Point shot! Dunk shot!!" I had most of these games add in Kung Fu kid and Outrun.
Hey Sega Lord X, a lot of compliments for your channel! Thank you for this fantastic video! I love Sega Master System, It was my only console when I was a child and now I have re-discovered it and I have started a little collection if Master System games and accesories! I'll try to follow you list that you show us in this video! I have "Black Belt" but I haven't played it yet (They have given it to me recently)! It's similar to Hokuto No Ken... Thank you again!! :-) PS: I think that every people thah love Master System must have "World Soccer" and "Hang On"..
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was my first game I really got my little teeth into. SMS was basically my childhood. We had an Atari before it, but I wasn't old enough to know what gaming was.
Yeah, W3DT would be my pick for 'showcasing' this console. There is a polished up remake of it on steam too, if you are not aware (: Did you know the WE5T ONE pass code to unlock everything? Fortunately I didn't until after I'd finished it proper a few times, but can still recall it.
Paperboy is one of the best games I've played on the Master System. It is a bit pricey, but affordable if you go cart only. R-Type is also pretty good and fairly affordable, although it has a lot of flicker.
I've been collecting SMS for a year now and today I was revisiting these old buying guide videos. This is a really good list man. a lot of affordable gems on here. The other guides show games that cost hundreds of dollars -which is discouraging to new collectors
One of my first in 87. Very satisfying and the music was awesome when you beat a boss. Large sprites when facing the boss and awesome finish when you beat them
i remember seeing choplifter on display at the store... looked like an arcade game on the TV... couldn't believe the graphics... wish I could go back to 1987!
Greta video fella. I do pan one day to set up all my consoles in the spare room. Ill have to buy a converter but these vids help me see which games are worth getting over the MD versions.
The Sega Master System is a nice console with some quality software. Its a shame most US gamers never got to play some of its best games. The library of games available over here in Europe was quite extensive.
I had sms first. Sold it and was suckered into the nes. I had way more shitty games than good games on the nes. I literally enjoyed every game I had for sms
Good Video. My favorite games for Sega MS are Sonic 1, Scramble Spirits, R-Type, Basketball nightmare, Alex Kidd In MW, Ultima IV, Golden Axe warrior, Aerial Assault (must not miss like UN squadron on SNES just 8 bit)
Reggie Jackson Baseball is criminally underrated and I would go as far as to say it's arguably the best 8-Bit baseball game of all time. Everything from the huge animated title screen, the simple yet responsive controls, the digitized speech, the music, the sound effects when your bat connects after a pitch or you slide into a base, the cutscenes like when you are running to home base after a home run, the 2 player home run derby mode, the seasonal mode and I could go on and on. People sleep on the sports titles but Walter Payton Football was pretty good and I also got a lot of enjoyment out of Great Golf. But yo as far as Black Belt anybody out here hating on that game I can't take you seriously. That's a Yuji Naka classic and deserves just as much appreciation and respect as Girl's Garden or Alex Kidd. Either you like being contrarian just for the sake of shock value and attention or you're ignorant as hell to the context of how much of an impact that release had in 1986/1987. It might not have sold well since the system had a small install base but it was THE goto Kung Fu clone that completely blew scores of other games out of the water at that time both on console and computer.
Nice mention on Black Belt. I had Kung Fu on the NES, and there's almost as much variety in level 1 alone as the whole of Kung Fu. Really nice game to showcase an SMS IMO. Those zoomed in major boss battles were something else!
Hahaha I love the thumbnail for this video. I frequently made fun, and did impressions of guys that wear backwards hats that cover the eyebrows. Good ol sega lord x. Best content on youtube
I love going back and watching your past content. Good stuff. I have a meager master system collection so far so I will have to look out for some of these. I only have 7 games so far and Double Dragon is the only one I have from your list. My other six are as follows. Alex Kidd in Miracle World Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (Blue Cart) California Games (Blue Cart Variant) Golvellius Sonic 2 (Eurpoean Import) Sonic Chaos (European Import)
R -Type is very close to the arcade version with a hidden level. Sounds good with fm chip and is kicking my ass after the fifth level after weeks of playing. Cart only and there is no nes version
Black Belt is first one I played on the Master System. I absolutely loved it and then bought the console. Before that, I was not really into video games. My favorites on the Master System were RPGs : Phantasy Star, Ultima IV and Ys, although they are to play now, so difficult. There are very good shoot'em ups : Power Strike I and II are just fantastic for an 8-bit console. The R-Type port is really impressing also. For action adventures games, I really loved Wonder Boy II & III and Golvellius. For platformers, I think Psycho Fox is the best one.
The Master System is the console that really signifies my childhood, eventhough it wasn't my first console. I was lucky to experience the PAL region library which, as a bonus for you in America, the console is region free. It's such a shame you missed out on some fantastic games, and on the RGB possibilities too. But now, with a little modding to your setup to get that perfect image, and with the world getting smaller, not to mention Everdrive possibilities for those hard to find titles especially, the Master System is a console that can be truly enjoyed to the fullest by everyone, and there is a pretty large library to discover, not to mention homebrew ports from Gamegear to Master System. Shame you didn't have the game represented by the title screen song in your list at the beginning of the video... Phantasy Star is a fantastic game!!
My actual first 10: Hang on/Safari hunt Ghostbusters Alien syndrome Zaxxon 3d Shooting gallery Blackbelt Double Dragon Zillion Afterburner Fantasy Zone
Cool list. Here's My first 10 Hang on/Safari Hunt (Built in) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (PAL) Shinobi Double Dragon Zillion Sonic the Hedgehog (PAL) Zillion 2 Kenseiden Space Harrier Action Fighter
Great list! I was surprised by Reggie Jackson Baseball, because it looks fantastic for an 8-but sports title, and looks like a fun, arcadey, pick up and play title. I will have to watch out for a copy.
I thought Yuji Naka worked on black belt, if I'm not mistaken. The Japanese version is totally different as well, since it was based on Hokuto No Ken. A sequel came out for the Genesis as well, but it was crap. :-)
Double Dragon on the Atari 2600 also surprisingly had 2 player co-op at the same time like the Master System. While incredibly impressive for an Atari 2600, it's not on the same level as the other versions of the game.
No, he's factoring in the cost of buying each cartridge. If you want to talk free ROMs, that would bump Phantasy Star, Sonic, and a handful of others up to the top of the list.
Good list. One of my first games for the SMS was Gangster Town. For a light gun game, it was fantastic. Always fun to play through if you have a gun and a tv for it to work on. I'd also plug the RPG's like Phantasy Star, Miracle Warriors, and Golvelius.
The thing i love about black belt is the fact that originally it was a Fist of the north star game that they changed so much when they ported here. you can still see the enemies exploding upon death just like the anime (wich led this game being banned in germany if i remember right)
Just have Alex Kid in Miracle World and a MS and I'm the happiest man on the World !!! So many memories about it and Shinobi who was so fantastic on MS ! But for me you miss again to talk about PacMania ! It is really a great pac man game on MS and probably the best version in regard of it's gameplay very responsive compare to MD or Arcade version ! Enduro Racer is great too, fun and attractive like The Ninja who are one of my favourite MS game ! Great video ! Hope you the best.
Incredibly solid list here. 😎 I played all of these besides Black Belt and Choplifter. That said, in the country where I live, Australia, Rambo: First Blood Part 2 was called ‘Secret Command’ and Reggie Jackson Baseball was merely ‘American Baseball’.☝🏻
except for the baseball game, i owned all the games u listed ... another decent racing game was Chase HQ, also a nice arcade port ... had hours of fun with that one!
Oh man, I had Ghostbusters as a kid. Literally took me years to finish, that final staircase level and final boss were damn hard. And yeah, it's waaaaaay better than the awful NES version. Had Outrun too as a kid, and it's a pretty good game! Challenging, but good. Think I only managed to finish it once.
the nes version is even harder.... i usually like more challenging games, but even with its easier difficulty the sega version was more enjoyable....felt like a more polished game.
My brother excellent channel! Just subbed! When I had a choice between the NES and the Sega Master System as a kid I actually picked the master system! Much better game system in my humble opinion. And for the record black belt was absolutely awesome just like your channel!
I got my Master System on Christmas day 1988 and still have it to this day. Double Dragon and Shinobi are my two favorites I have.

My best friend had a Sega Master System back in the day. I loved Shinobi, Rambo, Double Dragon, Outrun, and Rocky! I love and I miss the 80s!
Sega Lord X, as underrepresented as the Master System itself. Been following you for a second. Good job. Coming from SMS owner since '87.
Growing up I started with a Sega Master System while my best friend had the NES. He had Zelda and I loved that game and found Golvellius for the SMS and it was actually a great game! I'm watching this video 2 years later, and can say your channel has improved a lot in your presentation. Keep up the great work!
Woah.. I never saw Rampage on the Master System. That really does blow the NES version away and show you the power of Sega's 8 bit console.
I finally was able to see both versions of Double Dragon. The Sega version destroys Nintendo's version.
@@MrGamecatCanaveral true it has two player as well nes didn't
Yeah I had Rampage and Double Dragon for the Master System they were both so much better than the Nintendo versions.

Oh yeah, Asterix - you brought that one back in my 8-bit memory. Excellent game (:
They certainly didn't release many games for it in the US. The European/PAL library is much healthier.
I feel suicidal
@@AnthonyFlack I still would have liked the same quantity of games the Nes got.
Man, I just really like your videos. Great editing. Not a snob, just a very passionate gamer which is awesome. Kudos.

@@JohnnyProctor9
roms.
as a matter of principle i oppose remakes(with extremely few exceptions, like battlestar galactica, and the office). the original phantasy star is quite awesome.....that's how i learned to navigate mazes without having a map....
Dunk shot!!"
I had most of these games add in Kung Fu kid and Outrun.
So surprised to see Rambo on here. It's my favorite Master System game, and I never thought I'd see it get any recognition.
I'm not surprised, it's one of the best co-op games for the console IMO...WAY better than the crappy Zelda II clone that the NES got!
I still own my sms, i really love the rpgs like lord of the sword , phantasy star, miracle warriors, please do a video about rpgs please
This is a great video. I want an SMS MINI. The only thing missing is an RPG, I'd recommend Miracle Warriors or Ys
PS: I think that every people thah love Master System must have "World Soccer" and "Hang On"..
This is a good starting list, and the SMS has many more worth owning. I'll get to em eventually.
Shinobi is a must have game for anyone that has any love for not just the Madter System but Sega as a whole.
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was my first game I really got my little teeth into. SMS was basically my childhood. We had an Atari before it, but I wasn't old enough to know what gaming was.
Yeah, W3DT would be my pick for 'showcasing' this console. There is a polished up remake of it on steam too, if you are not aware (:
Did you know the WE5T ONE pass code to unlock everything? Fortunately I didn't until after I'd finished it proper a few times, but can still recall it.
You bring back childhood memories, thanks!!
If you have an A Power Base MiniFM you get the awesome FM soundtrack on Double Dragon making it even more awesome!!
Very true.
Great list, and I'll even try Ghostbusters.
Love black belt!
Oh yeah. It's a SMS classic for sure.
Yup, Black Belt was a deceptively good game.
Sega Lord X i wish sega usa ran with it and made it a series on both consoles.. i still own it
exactly man
One of my first in 87.
I agree. The SMS was a much better console abroad. The NES dominance in the US never gave it a chance to shine.
In Brazil SMS was a very successful console, lucky me! The library was quite extensive and also some exclusives made by Tec Toy only released here!
I had sms first. Sold it and was suckered into the nes. I had way more shitty games than good games on the nes. I literally enjoyed every game I had for sms
Great list and agree on mostly all!
Feelin' my member berries watching this. Had all of these games.
Okay didn't own Choplifter but we used to trade cartridges all the time so I traded a friend for this one and had it for awhile.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (Blue Cart)
California Games (Blue Cart Variant)
Golvellius
Sonic 2 (Eurpoean Import)
Sonic Chaos (European Import)
Lovin' it that you got Reggie Jackson's baseball on there. Had a ton of fun on that game with homerun derby! Nobody else mentions it!
Starting with Phantasy Star Intro music = Golden content ahead!
you must have R-type in the list too!!!
I was just going to post this, wasnt it on a card and not a cartridge
@@thetruth1862 it may have been on both, but it was definitely on a cartridge, because I have the cartridge.
No I remember I had Rtype on a card
hell yeah and Castle of Illusion
Love your videos. This is the first where I can see you speaking. I always pictured you as a slightly nerdy, slender black man with glasses.
Batman is one of my favorites for the Master System.
Great suggestions~! I like your videos, and am looking forward to more.
My actual first 10:
Hang on/Safari hunt
Ghostbusters
Alien syndrome
Zaxxon 3d
Shooting gallery
Blackbelt
Double Dragon
Zillion
Afterburner
Fantasy Zone
Cool list. Here's My first 10
Hang on/Safari Hunt (Built in)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (PAL)
Shinobi
Double Dragon
Zillion
Sonic the Hedgehog (PAL)
Zillion 2
Kenseiden
Space Harrier
Action Fighter
Great list! I was surprised by Reggie Jackson Baseball, because it looks fantastic for an 8-but sports title, and looks like a fun, arcadey, pick up and play title. I will have to watch out for a copy.
Thanks man. Reggie Jackson is a classic in my circle of friends. We played the heck out of it. Best 8bit arcade baseball game by miles.
@@SegaLordX I agree it is good, but I will put Baseball Stars up against any 8 bit baseball game any day.
I absolutely LOVE black belt! I can beat it blind folded and still play it to this day!
I thought Yuji Naka worked on black belt, if I'm not mistaken. The Japanese version is totally different as well, since it was based on Hokuto No Ken. A sequel came out for the Genesis as well, but it was crap. :-)
And another thing, I owned almost ALL of the games you listed while growing up, except for Batman, and Reggie Jackson Baseball.
For a Sega fan your videos are the best on TH-cam
Thank you. I appreciate the message.
Double Dragon on the Atari 2600 also surprisingly had 2 player co-op at the same time like the Master System. While incredibly impressive for an Atari 2600, it's not on the same level as the other versions of the game.
I agree with you on Double Dragon that is when Sega officially became the system to own, however you forgot Rocky
Video title: Your First 10 Games for the Sega Master System
My Personal Interpretation: First 10 Master System ROMs to fire up.
No, he's factoring in the cost of buying each cartridge. If you want to talk free ROMs, that would bump Phantasy Star, Sonic, and a handful of others up to the top of the list.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land was such a great game
You rule dude. I was the only sega kid in my town growing up and was never jealous of Nintendo kids because of many these games that you mention here.
Incredibly solid list here. 😎
I played all of these besides Black Belt and Choplifter. That said, in the country where I live, Australia, Rambo: First Blood Part 2 was called ‘Secret Command’ and Reggie Jackson Baseball was merely ‘American Baseball’.☝🏻
Man this brings back memories! Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion was one of my favorites too!
except for the baseball game, i owned all the games u listed ... another decent racing game was Chase HQ, also a nice arcade port ... had hours of fun with that one!
Great video! Many titles I was familiar with because of their name but for which I had no idea what they looked like.
Shinobi was my favourite on the master system
Rambo was called "Secret Command" in Europe.
And Reggie Jackson Baseball was called ''Great Baseball'' in Europe.
SMS Ghostbusters is light years better than the NES version.
My brother excellent channel! Just subbed! When I had a choice between the NES and the Sega Master System as a kid I actually picked the master system! Much better game system in my humble opinion. And for the record black belt was absolutely awesome just like your channel!
