  • How to fix: AC cold on one side and Hot opposite side 2002 Caravan
    List of actuators, functions and locations is at the end of the description.
    Description:
    This is how to find and fix a common AC/Heat problem in your Caravan. Where one side blows cold and the opposite side is really hot, FULL HEAT and one or both sides temperatures won't adjust.
    This principle applies to any vehicle that uses electrical slide temperature controls for AC & Heat. This video will show you how I diagnosed and fixed mine on my 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport.
    After completing the repairs you should do a environmental control panel calibration. Here's some instructions for Wayne Jones who commented below, Thanks Wayne.
    Calibration:
    If you have the exact same control panel here's how to do the calibration.
    - 1. Turn the switch on...don't crank van or turn on the engine.
    - 2. Press the power button and recycle button at the same time and hold them for several seconds until you see lights start to flash on the on the control panel. They will flash slowly on different buttons for a short time for about a minute. While they are flashing the computer is performing the calibration.
    - 3. If the computer detects a problem a flash code will be flashed on the ac button light. Pauses in the flashes tells you that it is moving on to the second number and so on. ie. four flashes a pause and then two flashes mean code "42". Unfortunately I don't have the codes written down. You'll have do a google search for them.
    - 4. If you see the code write it down and do a google search on it. Then perform the recommended repairs for that code and repeat the calibration.
    - 5. I've been told a regular an OBD scanner tool will NOT show the codes as they are stored in the body control module and you must have a scanner that will read the "Body Module" codes.
    - 6. I'm sorry I don't have any more information to pass on about this, if you have more information please comment below and I'll include it here.
    I hope this helps someone. Parts and tools are listed below.
    Parts I used:
    - Dorman 604-003 Air Door Actuator, (Commonly called a Blend Door Actuator).
    Approx. $20.00 Amazon Prime Two day shipping.
    You can pick one up in town for about $30.00.
    - Dodge/Mopar Stock Part Numbers are: ADS4202; APBDA0010; SK604003; 4885465AA
    Tools I used:
    - 8mm ¼” drive socket.
    - ¼” Socket Drive Handle.
    - 21mm ½” Drive Deep Socket
    - 6” ½” Drive Extension.
    - ½” Drive Ratchet.
    - 1” #2 Phillips Stubby Screw Driver.
    Chemicals I Used:
    - PB Blaster Penetrating Oil.
    ** List of Actuators and functions and locations:
    - Top actuator controls where the air goes, the floor vents, upper vents blend of the floor and upper vents or defrost on the windshield. Note: if you put the controls to defrost the the last two settings the AC automatically comes on and turns off the recycle control, the one with the "U" turn symbol.
    It's above the gas peddle behind the center console.
    - Bottom Left Actuator controls the passenger vent above the radio and the passenger vent by the window.
    It's above the gas peddle behind the center console.
    - Bottom Right Actuator controls the drivers vent above the radio and the drivers vent by the window.
    It's above the gas peddle behind the center console.
    - Center vent above the radio has no actuator per se. as it's connected to both left and right vents above the radio so it is actually a blend of both temperatures. If you put the drivers temp full cold and the passenger full hot, it will be a mix of the two temps, warm, not hot or cold.
    So there is No location for the center: It's controlled by the three actuators above the gas peddle and behind the center console.
    - Glove Box Actuator is the fresh air or recycle cabin air actuator. I show it at the end of the video.
    It's behind the glove box.
    Thanks for watching. If you learned something or liked my video please give it a thumbs up for the work I put into it for you.

    Big thanks Keith, I have a 2004 and don’t have the problem yet but I wouldn’t know how to begin to solve the problem if I had it without your video. 4 actuators? Wow, that is a nightmare trying to figure out which one is which and where they are at. You have saved people a ton of work up front with your detailed explanation. Thanks again for an awesome video.

    My goodness my friend. You are absolutely awesome. I believe your calling is to make instructional videos because you are amazing at it. You addressed every aspect of diagnosing and repairing this issue. I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that looks exactly like yours and what a blessing it is do be able to watch the work you did and how you did it! Now, I can confidently address the issue on my van, which is the drivers side blows hot air and passenger side blows cold air. I want to thank you for your time and efforts; and the very pleasant attitude and tone of voice that you used while filming. I commend you for producing not only a wonderful, informational and complete instructional video, but also for your good character and vocabulary that you used all throughout the video! It was a pleasure listening to you as you covered every detail! Thank you my friend!

      Wow it's nice when someone comes along and appreciates all the work in editing and videoing that goes into making these videos, and expresses it so well. I definitely could do the job 4 times faster and not spend 4 to 8 hours of editing and doing the research on the parts to make sure the information I put out is accurate. Thanks you for your wonderful comment. You sir are appreciated by me. It's nice to know the work I did on this video did not go to waste.

      Potential use. air ok now on caravan but i can here 7 thumps every time i turn key on or off by the fan. It appears to be the point that the recirculation door (by the fan under glove compartment) tries to close. the door gets about 1/2 inch from closing. that is where the thumps start. i recalibrated system but to know avail. Problem first started when i took battery out 6 mths ago to buy a new one. i don't know if the actuators cause this particular thumping issue. however the middle vent is just a bit warmer then the others. thanks

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep sounds like it's going. Better change it now before you end up on a long trip and it goes hot all of a sudden. We stuffed bubble wrap in the vent on the right and it helped until I could get it fixed. Let us know how it worked out for you. OH to stuff it you have to remove the vent assembly, and that requires a #2 Phillips Screwdriver. You'll have to put the drink holder and the the little trim cap above it and then you can access the screws. Thanks again for watching Scoot.. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

      Your welcome Micheal. After you do the repair it's a good idea to do the calibration so the computer knows where the actuators are. I'm going to quote Wayne Jones below who was kind enough to include the instructions for that. Here's Waynes instructions:
      If you have the exact same control panel here's how to do the calibration. "Turn the switch on...don't crank van...and press the power button and recycle button at the same time and hold them for several seconds. You will see lights start flashing slowly on different buttons for a short time...mine was less than a minute...while they are flashing it is performing the calibration. after the calibration was finished mine is showing a problem by way of the ac button light flashing rapidly. google shows that when a problem is detected and the light flashes...it has a code...but unfortunately an OBD scanner tool will NOT show any codes. you must have a scanner tool that will read the "body module" code...or something like that...to read the code".
      I hope that helps clear up a few things. Let me know how it goes or if you have any more questions for comments to contribute to the repair process.
      Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

    Sr. thank you. My girlfriend and i took her Caravan to a AC specialist. He put in new seals and filled the system. When everything was done he told us that everything is fine, but the car only blows cold air on the right side because the high blower, fan, isn't working. He recommended that we take to a electrician. The electrician said that both fans work. We were left very confused and down about the whole situation. We still haven't fixed since i just saw your video but I'm sure it will work. Once again, Thank you.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome. After you figure out which one it is don't forget to do the calibration. It could take a few tries according to a friend. Also there is a cabin filter under the glove box, not related to your problem, just some extra information. It's the long cover with the plastic slide on it. Most people don't even know it's there and if it gets clogged it won't matter what you do the AC unit, it just won't blow cold.
      To do the calibration don't start the van just turn the key to ON, and to quote Wayne Jones below:
      "Press the power button and recirc button at the same time and hold them for several seconds. you will see lights start flashing slowly on different buttons for a short time...mine was less than a minute...while they are flashing it is performing the calibration. after the calibration was finished mine is showing a problem by way of the ac button light flashing rapidly. google shows that when a problem is detected and the light flashes...it has a code...but unfortunately an OBD scanner tool will NOT show any codes. you must have a scanner tool that will read the "body module" code...or something like that...to read the code. anyway".
      Hope this helps. Let me know please.

    Damn good video. Just bought an 01 Voyager today. Had the heat on combination and I was getting completely cold air out of the passenger side floor vent and the wife was getting heat on her side so I'm guessing it's going to be the same one you replaced on the left there. The combination one seems to change everything but the passenger side floor vent is always freezing cold. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Keith!

      Keith Noneya You might appreciate this. Yesterday I got in there and started taking things apart and testing things and I did find that the passenger side actuator was a bit slow to react so I went ahead and replaced it. The only problem is it didn’t fix my situation. I got the whole thing back together and was testing and I was still getting cold air blasting down on the passenger side and I couldn’t figure out what the issue was. That was until I took the glove box down and got my head down there and looked closer only to realize that the cap for the cabin air filter is missing completely. Haha! Found one on eBay... already on its way.

    • @keithnoneya

      Just a note when you go to put the new filter in. The side closest to the front of the car has cracks sometimes and the filter gets hung up on it and won't go in. Put a piece of metal banding material on that side and then slide it in. The metal banding material is the same metal bands that holds boxes to pallets for shipping. It's usually about 1/2" wide and black. After you get the filter past the cracked area, if it has it, you can pull the metal banding material out. Hope that helps. Keith Noneya

      The F250/350 if it's only blowing out the defrost vents it's most likely the vacuum line in the engine bay is broken open. It's attached to that Oval Vacuum Tank on the Passenger Fender Well. The other problem is actually the 4wd Vacuum Switch sometime leaks and it lets out the vacuum for the AC Controls as well. There's a ton of videos on that on TH-cam on "F250 AC comes out Defrost Vent Only", to show you how to diagnose it and fix it. Hope that helps. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    Great thorough looking video. I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager that has a similar issue - all vents blowing cold air and you can hear the knocking behind the dash which I’m guessing is the actuator. My one concern is taking out the front seat. Did you not have the car jacked up at all? There is not much room to get under the car without me using my car ramps. Would you advise using the ramps? I have some penetrating oil that I plan on using to help make it easier to remove the nuts. Thanks for any help.

    Hey Keith I have a similar problem with my 2003 cadillac cts. Passenger side has heat and driver side just cold air. I thought I might have been the blender on driver side . so i laid under dash and looked at it to see if it was moving up and down when I change the driver side temp and it did. So it works , which leaves me stumbled on what could be the problem

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard some Actuators are connected like in my Caravan. However I'm not sure on the CTS, funny my son and I have welded a new quarter panel on his 03 CTS, you can check out the project in my playlists.
      - Ok back to the CTS Actuator.
      - There are a few things that can still cause that:
      1. It has to move in two directions, also some of them crack and move with no load applied but as soon as it's put back in, it won't move. You can tell if it has a cracked gear as it usually makes a clicking sound.
      2. The environmental controls can be bad if it has dual controls, I assume it does as it's a Cadillac.
      - To try and isolate it you can swap the actuators and see if the problem follows the actuator. If you're going to swap them, before you take them off, make sure you mark one of them with a scratch, tape or something that isn't going to fall off. Nothing like going through all that work only to find out you put them back in the same positions.
      - You may also be able to just switch the wires from one actuator to the other one and see if the problem follows the wire. If it follows the wire it's the controls not the actuator.
      - Hope this helps you, feel free to ask more questions and i'll see if I can help. Thanks for watching.
      Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

    Great video. Have a similar van. is there any fuse to turn off the heating element?
    thanks

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Zaman, no there is not. The heater works off of hot water that is pumped into a small Heater Radiator called a Heater Core inside the car. The Heater Core is located in the Environmental control box under the dash behind the glove and radio controls. The actuators actually control the flow of the hot water and the AC Coolant pumped into the AC Evaporator next to the Heater Core. The AC Evaporator is a small Radiator as well, it pulls the hot air out of the car as the fan blows the hot air through its cool fins. So sorry there is not fuse to turn off the hot water or coolant. All heat and AC is controlled by the actuators that direct the cabin air either through the Heater Core for heat or through the AC Evaporator Core for cool air. So just follow the video instructions to find the bad actuator and change the actuator that doesn't work. Hope that helps Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

      It depends on if you have the dual climate controls. I think all the vans do but I'm not sure.
      Here's a List of Actuators and functions and locations:
      - The top actuator controls where the air goes, the floor vents, upper vents blend of the floor and upper vents or defrost on the windshield.
      - The Center vent above the radio has no actuator per se. it it's connected to both left and right vents above the radio so it is actually a blend of both temperatures. If you put the drivers temp full cold and the passenger full hot, it will be a mix of the tow temps, warm, not hot or cold.
      No location: It's controlled by the three actuators above the gas peddle and behind the center console.
      - Glove Box Actuator is the fresh air or recycle cabin air actuator. I show it at the end of the video.
      It's behind the glove box.
      Hope this helps folks. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

    I have an 02 Town and Country the front heater core leaks on the floor the hot and cold doesn't work unless I hit the bottom two actuators with a hammer the defroster actuator I had to hit with a hammer to get it to switch from defrost and to defrost the blower sounded like it was rubbing up against something and I had to replace that with one out of a junkyard and that blower started acting up and I found out that it was a short in the magnetic field on the motor of the front blower and same thing you could tap it with a hammer and it would start blowing eventually the first blower got so bad it just completely failed and even blew a fuse under the hood. On the second blower used out of a salvage yard it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't and I plan on paying the $80 to just get a brand new one with a lifetime warranty after I replace the heater core and that's right there in the video made in France. Easy to get to and doesn't require the dash to be removed completely from the vehicle. I believe the heater core is leaking and causing shorts on the units. I do notice another thing about the actuators. I got all of them out of another van could have been a little newer than 02 and when I replaced them I could tell the ones I got out of the other van. There's a brand name on them the ones that came out of my van say Lucas and the ones that came out of the Salvage band say TRW just like the ones in this video so I don't know if that company changed its name or if they were sold out to another manufacturer but they are both Factory obviously. The recycle actuator I can't even use because I've had to tap the fan so much to get it to blow. I don't really care much about the recycle all it is is AC-Max and non-AC Max. However I believe I have managed to get the hot and cold and defrost switch to all work correctly until I can get a heater core. It seems that that rod had no effect when turned but that plastic piece that goes on the ride broke and I had to replace that and I don't understand why the two move together on a Gear but somehow the hot and the cold on either side address after putting it all back together so it could be that it calibrates itself somehow. Maybe when you take it off it will keep going in one direction looking for a blend door to stop turning and then when it senses resistance it possibly just cuts itself off and gets ready to go in the other direction I'm not sure how these guys work maybe they have a chip in them to make the motor feel for resistance.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the description above "SHOW MORE" I list how to do the unit calibration. After changing any actuator make sure you do that so they work properly. Looks like you have all this just about whipped. Thanks for watching and the descriptive comment. Also if you notice that the leak doesn't smell like antifreeze it might be the AC drain plug is clogged and that's where the water could be coming from. I would check that before changing the Heater Core. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya PS while your in there change the cabin filter to ensure you have good airflow. Keith

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jessie, sorry for the late reply, I had an appointment I had to take care of. By faint I think you mean the temperature is not as cold on the drivers side or the ones in the back of the van, if you have rear air? If so it's most likely the bottom left actuator. That actuator controls the passenger center and right vent above the radio and the passengers vent by the window. That actuator is located above the the gas peddle behind the center console, the bottom left one, it's the same one I had a problem with. If you mean it doesn't blow as hard as the other ones, then you probably have an obstruction, those are very rare for a single vent to be obstructed. These vans also have a cabin filter that must be changed every year or so. If you don't change them the AC will slowly get weaker and weaker as the filter will fill up with dust and debris. If you click on the words "SHOW MORE" above, right under my channel name, I have a list of actuators, their purpose and where they are located in the van. Hope that helps. I suppose you could, I never gave it much thought because either way you'll have to remove the actuator to do it. Also some of the actuators once removed have a flapper that is set by it's own weight and if you remove the actuator i'm not sure if it will be stuck in cold, hot or somewhere in between when the fan control is activated. So for $30.00 bucks it's probably best to replace it in case you ever have to go somewhere where you'll need heat, say on a road trip. sorry I couldn't be more helpful on that question Sol. I have a 2010 CTS, 6 cyl, 3.0 I had the same problem with my actuator on the right side and just like in your video changing the actuator didn't fix the problem. You said you would troubleshoot and let us know what you learned. Did you?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hum, In the video starting at time index 16:23 I show how I troubleshoot which actuator was the problem, and show it not working correctly, I changed it and all is well now. The CTS I believe is an electronically controlled system as almost are today. The solder joint on the resistor packs get cracked, due to Lead Free Solder, and go intermittent. If you've changed the actuator that's not working it's most likely bad solder joints in the control unit or a bad wire. If you want to take a chance with a used one, get one from the wrecking yard and swap it out. Otherwise you'll need to take it to an Automotive Electrical Specialist, yes they are a few out there, to find out which component or wire is bad. Also don't forget most systems have at least three actuators you need to find and pull all of them and check to see if they are moving both directions when you activate the controls. As for which control actuates each of them, I'll leave that up to you to figure out since I'm not familiar with a 2010 CTS. If you find one that doesn't move in both directions like I did, change that one. Make sure and check them all, if one is bad there's a good probability more than one is bad or about to go bad. Hope that points you in the right direction. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    Hi Keith, thanks for the video! I'm having a similar problem, but my setup is different. It's the wife's 2002 Dodge Caravan (not the Grand). I have only 2 actuators, not 3. There are screw holes in the molding where a 3rd (bottom right) one WOULD go but nothing there from factory. Is it possible the bottom right is actually for the rear controls? (the non-grand Caravan has no rear vents).
    My problem: The A/C blows VERY cold on all vents EXCEPT the driver side. That's including the far right passenger and the 3 vents in the middle above the center console, but NOT the far driver side one. I can confirm the Floor/Dash/mix switch works properly including the driver side vent, and when you put it on high heat, it heats evenly on ALL vents. But on AC, that drivers vent blows kind of neutral... not cold like the others.

    Hi Keith, I am having a similar problem with my 2002 Chrysler Town and Country except mine is on the driver's side. I followed your video and replaced the driver's side actuator and then did the calibration. Unfortunately, I am still getting warm air blowing out the driver's side vents. I had a mechanic look at it twice last year.... all he did was overcharge me and recharge my system and add some sealant. He wasn't able to find any leak. Within a couple weeks the driver's air was blowing warm again. Any ideas what my problem might be? Thanks, Mary

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary. Check the air filter under and behind the glove box, most people don't even know about it. There is a long rectangular panel with a slide fastener on the bottom of the Heater/AC box. Slide it so that you can pull the filter cover off. Pull the filter and if it's dirty replace it. Until you get one put the cover back on and see if the AC is working. If it's not open the hood and run the AC for a few minutes, there are two hoses that go to the AC system on the fire wall. Put your hand on both of them, If your AC system is working one should be fairly HOT and one should be really COLD, Icy or almost Icy with water droplets on it. If it's not then the AC system is not on or could have an obstruction somewhere. You may also check that the Condenser right behind the grill, check it for bugs and obstructions. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions I monitor my channel several times a day. Keith

    Very meticulous I wish the mechanics that work on vehicles was 1/4 as good. One question, I think the actuator that was bad was the one on the left hand side of the three. Is that correct?? I watched it a few times but sometimes I'm a little dense and know 0 about this stuff.

      The actuators are only held on by three screws. I haven't messed with the doors at all so i'm not sure about those. Also the video is on a Caravan, but I think Dodge uses the same environmental system for most of their vehicles. So I guess the only way to figure it out is to start playing with it. Hope that helps. Ok so the ac and heat blow fine if it just would come out in my 2002 dodge grand caravan the back has ac but the front only has some ac (not alot) when I drive at high speeds, I was told it's the actuator but not sure what is called or the location, if you have time could you help me out with a few answers? Pls and thank you, by the way great video

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amanda. Doge, Chrysler have a cutout switch controlled by the PCM (Power Control Module), that under high load the AC cuts out. It has been common on ALL my Dodge vehicles, Dynasty, and two Caravan's I've owned. It's also common on Fords trucks and passenger vans. However unless you're going up a really steep hill with the van fully loaded, or trying to pass someone on the freeway or driving 100 mph plus this usually doesn't come into play to where it's noticeable. It sounds more like you may have an overcharge on the AC and at high speeds the compressor pressure is building up and the high pressure switch is doing its job and cutting the AC off. There are a few other things that can cause this too:
      1. A low charge can do it too, because the Compressor will run the low side out of refrigerant and the low pressure switch will cut the compressor off until the system balances out. Have a friend put a set of gauges. Some automotive repair centers with do an AC diagnostic for around $35.00 or less.
      1. Have you tried changing the Cabin Filter under the glove box. When they get dirty the slow the airflow over the Evaporator, (the part that makes cold air), and it starts to freeze up. If that's the case try changing the Cabin Filter. They don't cost much, under $20.00.
      2. The Vent control actuator the top one can get stuck on Defrost position or a combination of vent and defrost. With the AC running and it on dash vents only see if the defrost has some AC coming out. If it does you may have a stuck actuator. My basic rule of thumb is if one is going bad the others are not far behind, so I change them all.
      3. If you can't afford all three, try pulling them off one at a time, but leave the wires connect to them. Then activate the environmental controls and see if the spline rotates in both directions. If it only goes one direction or doesn't move at all then you have found your bad actuator. The Vent/Defrost control Actuator is the top one in the video. There's also a list of them in the SHOW MORE comment tab below the video.
      Let me know if I can help anymore, I'b be glad to. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya PS don't forget to do the calibration after you make repairs, the procedure is in the comments about the video. Keith

      @@keithnoneya I am having a similar problem. I believe that it is the wheel that the actuator is trying to spin to select between def, vent, and floor. (Top actuator) I replaced it, and it seems to struggle, then I hear clicking. I tried to do the recalibration, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I think that wheel (for lack of a better term), isn't moving correctly and it is stopping from selecting between def, vent, and floor. Great video btw, thanks!

    My driver's side is blowing only cold. I removed the acuator and it was bad so I replaced it. The new actuator works but the driver's side still blows cold. In installing it - there was no "male" shaft for the actuator to fit on but what looked like it might be a gear the actuator would drive. Should I have seen a distinct shaft like the passenger's side has? Thanks,
    SP

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephen. No the passenger is the only one with the "metal" LOL, shaft. The shaft goes over to the passenger side to activate the blend door on that side. If it still blows cold you may have to do the calibration routine listed above. Click on the SHOW MORE words above for the description to drop down so you can read them. Scroll down to the word "Calibration" and follow that routine. If you still have the problem and you have the electronic environmental controls with the blue numbered lights you could also have a bad control panel. Hi Keith:
    My personal work vehicle is a 2010 town & country limited. (152,900 miles) Passenger side blows high heat, driver side is fine.
    I removed and replaced the door blend actuator (& new cabin filter since I was in there)
    I tried calibrating it and still have high heat. It changes from vent, defrost, floor & the combos just fine, not sure what else could be the problem. Help! It's 94°!

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lori. There is a total of four of these:
      - One for each side, Drivers & Passengers, to control each sides temperature from hot and cold.
      - One for blending or routing the flow to the windshield, dash vents & floor.
      - One to control where the air comes from, inside or outside the vehicle. That one is behind the glove box, the one you said you already changed. That one does not control the passenger heat, just where the air comes from.
      It sounds to me like the your bottom left actuator behind the radio in the dash is bad. That's provided you have the same vent control system I have in the 2002 Caravan. You can find them behind the radio, I show how to get to them in the video. Remove the suspected one then activate the controls from cold to hot and back. Do them one at a time and figure out which one is only moving in one direction. When activating the temperature controls from one side to the other the gear should rotate in one direction, then in the other direction when the temperature control is reversed. The one that won't change gear direction when the temperature is reversed is the bad one. If it's good put it back in and try another one. Sometimes you just have to play around until you find the bad one.
      - To troubleshoot in another way, you can try changing the drivers and passenger actuators. If the problem switches sides then you know it's one of those two.I put a list of what each actuator does in the description/SHOW MORE tab above. I kind of assume you saw that already, because you said you did the calibration. Although the video is on a 2002, the same principle applies in finding the bad actuator for the 2010. If all else fails change them all and calibrate. Since I'm not familiar with the 2010, you're just gonna have to try a few things to figure it out. If you've done this much I'm sure you can find it. Of course there's always the dealer or a mechanic. But that 's kinda spendy for a $20.00 part. Sorry I can't be of more help. But I hope I gave you some ideas to try to point you in the right direction. Let me know how it goes. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

      Hi Angela, I'm not entirely sure as I have a 2002. I know between 2005 and 2008 they went to a different HVAC system under the dash, I think it was 2006. If you have mine I list the actuator location and functions in my comments, and the part numbers and tools you'll need. Hi Mdot... sorry I had some family stuff to do. I would try to see if they are solid and make sure you can't push them together easily. Dodge may have made a design change. You could always go to the junk yard and look at another 2005 to see if Dodge did make a change. If not at least you can see if you're missing something by looking at the same year. I do that sometimes when i'm not sure about something. Also make sure that the actuators when pulled off do move in BOTH directions. Also check for a clicking sound when they're installed and operated, if you have a clicking sound that's a sign there's a cracked gear in the actuator. Hope this helps,
      let me know how it works out, or ask more questions. One last thing don't forget to check the forums for answers, there is someone else that's sure to have the answer. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Not sure of any other electrical issues that could be. Thought about back flushing the heater core? Any Ideas? Thanks

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike, yep I sure do. Some vehicles withing the same manufacture use the same system under the dash and some don't. So make sure you changed the correct one by following the troubleshooting part of the video. Although your's is a Riviera the basic process is the same to identify the bad actuator. If all your actuators are the same you can swap each one with the new one to see if you had two that were bad or if you changed the wrong one. Also if your Environmental controls are digital, meaning they are automatic and have the LCD or LED temperature displayed on the controls, more than like you have a bad controller. These can usually be fixed by taking them apart and re-soldering the resistors that come loose on the inside. It can be a little tricky the get them out much less taking them apart, so be careful. If you don't have the digital type you could just need to calibrate the actuators. Each manufacture and some time model years do it differently so you'll probably have to look that up in a search or a forum. Some units can still have loose parts inside even if they are not the digital type, so it could be worth a YT and Google search. Also try this guys video, he has a 97 like yours and he shows how to fix the problem. th-cam.com/video/NCQYuqIu6F0/w-d-xo.html
      Hope that leads you in the right direction. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya PS feel free to ask more questions as needed.

      Hey Mike, Wow the only thing left I can think of is check the rods that the actuators turn and see if they flaps are working. If the actuators work when the controls are activated then the only thing left is that the flaps aren't moving to redirect the air flow. Try moving the rods by hand or with a pair of needle nose pliers with the system on and see if the air is redirected when they are moved. If worse comes to worse, just do what I did until I fixed mine and that's I put a big rag in the vent to block the cold air. I would post a video of the controls moving the actuators and show if the rods can be moved by hand. Someone has had this problem before. I'm curious now as to what the problem is. Keep me informed and send me a link to the video when it's up. Keith Noneya

      No I don't, but if it looks the same as mine it probably is. You can remove the one nearest the firewall and activate the controls, the control that moves it should let you know which actuator it is. Keith Noneya same question but i have a 2000 caravan and do you know anything about the rear vents blowing hot air too?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if there is a actuator back there but I would think there would be since it has dual air. Before you do any maintenance back there check that both controls are set to cold if that's what you want. The controls i'm referring too are the ones on the dash and the one on the overhead between the seats. If the controls are set right you may have to pull the side cover off to access the rear AC/Heater area. It's on the passenger side just inside the back lift hatch. You can easily remove the back cover by pulling the top cap off then pulling up the bottom cap, remove the bottom cap screws first. Then pull the passenger side towards the center of the van. If you want to remove the whole side cover you'll have to pull the seat belt bolt on the top. This is also where your rear fan resistor is. Make sure the evaporator and heater core are clean of dirt and debris. I'll look through some of my old videos of when I worked back there and see if I can see an actuator. You may also check the book and the forums for an answer. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask. Let me know it works out for you. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

      I just repaired my 2015 Grand Caravan using the information in this video. (Thanks, Keith.) On the 2015, the actuator for the passenger is not on the driver's side like this video. It is on the passenger side. I made the mistake of tearing out the plastic panels on the driver's side to discover this. You only need to work on the passenger side. Your head will be crammed beneath and behind the glove compartment. It was pretty precarious. Use small tools.
      To figure out which actuator was the broken one, I pulled power from one and then turned the passenger temperature knob. It turned out to be the the top-most actuator.
      I replaced my actuator with one I bought from AutoZone that came with a lifetime warranty. I've heard of this problem happening multiple times to some people, so I at least don't want to have to pay for the part each time. The warranty comes with the part at AutoZone; it does not cost extra.

    I HAVE A 2011 DODGE AVENGER AND ONLY THE DRIVER SIDE DOES NOT BLOW COLD BUT MY PASSENGER SIDE DOES. AND I ALREADY CHECKED IF MY ACTUATORS ARE WORKING AND THEY ARE WORKING FINE. THERE IS TWO ACTUALLY. WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Make sure the actuators move both directions.
      2. Also sometimes they will but the gear is cracked and it slips under pressure. You could check that by trying to hold them while they turn in both directions.
      3. Make sure you have air flow out of the vent. If the ducting slips off you won't get either hot or cold.
      4. Where the actuator hooks up to the flapper rod, make sure you can hear the flapper moving by moving the rod the actuator connects too.
      5. If you have AUTOMATIC duel controls meaning computer controlled with a digital indicator you may have a bad control unit internally for the drivers sensor.
      - If you have MANUAL duel control I would say check the control unit, but you said the actuators do move so it's probably not that. I hope this gives you some ideas to check and hopefully solve your problem. Let us know how it works out.

      Hey Jason check these two videos out. The first one is for a clicking rear actuator on a 204, the camera work leaves something to be desired but I think you'll get the idea of where to look. th-cam.com/video/FNTL-y3ZWyY/w-d-xo.html . The second video is a 2006 for the blower resistor, which changes the fan speed but he does a little bit better on describing the panel screws etc. The camera work on this one sucks too, but I think between the both of them you can get an idea of what to do
      or what else to search for. Remember there are fans, actuators, blower resistors other AC & Heating items back there as well. Here's the link for th second one. th-cam.com/video/kH6ZF0lMZy0/w-d-xo.html Also look up your part to see what it looks like. I like Amazon Prime, 2 day shipping. Of course if worse comes to worse, for the summer just, disconnect the rear fan so it won't push hot air into the cabin, until you can figure out how to fix it.
      To access the panel try this video on a 2011 Town & Country. He's replacing the Evaporator, the part that cools the air, and he show's how to get into the side panel, you'll need that info to access the actuator.
      Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/bc3EgAefVmU/w-d-xo.html
      Just don't bend or break or remove any lines back there and of course take pictures of how it all went together before you take it all a part. Hope this get's you going in the right direction. Feel free to ask more questions. I'll be going to bed after this reply, 4am comes early. I'll see your reply in the morning if' it's not in the next few minutes. Don't be afraid to tackle a job, but do you're homework first by reading, internet searching and watching a lot of videos before you start the job. Oh and yep ask questions on the sites of the videos. If you're watching a video and have a question, send me the link and a time index and i'll try and answer it for you. Hi Jimbo, If that rod fell inside getting out will be a real chore, you'll have to open up the bottom somehow. However if it's just missing you can install a new one. You can pull one out of the junk yard. Or by one a rod at Lowes, I think it's 1/4" square rod take the actuator with you to test fit a rod end. I don't know the length so you have to install it long, mark it remove it, cut it and re-install it. They just slide in and out once you remove the Actuator. If I find a video on it i'll post a link in a reply for ya. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

    So my ac sometimes won’t come thru vents and sounds like it’s all blowing behind the dash on passenger side would that be the actuator? If so which one would it be.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that's a new one on me. I would say yes it's an actuator. The reason is because it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. These actuators have little plastic gears in them and the gears crack and slip depending on the amount of pressure they have to exert to change the air flow. Go through the procedure I show in the video it should help isolate the bad actuator. Also there is a cabin filter cap under the dash on the passenger side. Make sure it's on all the way. I don't have a video on but if you do a search on your "year' Caravan Cabin filter change" it will show you where it is. The other thing to check is the ducting has foam around the connections. With age these rot out and it may allow a lot of air to escape. You can pull the radio and control panel out and inspect behind the center portion of the ducting. If the foam is bad you can buy some foam strips and push them in or remove the duct and install them. I'm curious what's causing your problem. Let me know what you find out. Hope this points you in the right direction. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

      Sorry it’s a 2002 dodge caravan. I did pull the cabin filter out. What a mess that was. Completely full of all kinds of stuff. The vents actually don’t work on any setting. Heat ac or just vented air from the outside. I recalibrated it and vents came on for a few minutes but then went back to blowing down through the cabin filter area. Im getting an actuator from advance today. Looks like this might be an all day job.

      @@torristempel7767 Wow yeah I know what you mean on the cabin filter, just don't forget to put it back in or the Evaporator Fins (AC Radiator) will clog up and then you'll have no Heat or AC. Just out of curiosity, is your Environmental panel just buttons and knobs or is it the Automatic one with the LED Display? The Automatic ones have Lead Free Solder joints inside and the joints crack and the components either fall off or the circuit stops working. Sometimes you can open the control panel up and re-solder the joints and it will start controlling the Actuators again. Some people go the wrecking yard and get a used one but a lot of those have the same problems so it doesn't always work. If you get brave enough to open it, take videos as you do it so you'll know how to put it back together. Hope that gives you some more useful info. Ac is all good. Now i notice that after roughly 30-40 minutes of driving ac doesnt blow as cold and it seems that the fans stop blowing as hard. also notice dripping water from cabin air filter slot. Thought the condensation drain was plugged which would be freezing up condenser possibly so i had the drain cleared. There is still a leak through the cabin air filter slot. I open up the cabin air filter slot and water comes pouring out, as well there seems to be no cabin air filter? as well, the hard metal condenser looking thing to the left of where the filter should be looks very dirty and possibly clogged up by the bottom. Yep I'd say that's your problem. You'll need to put a low pan under the filter access and spray some 401 anti-fungle spray up in there. Then us a tooth brush to clean the fins, only go in the direction of the fins. Then get a kitchen spray bottle and put some water in it and flush it all out. How do u adjust the heat

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You adjust the heat by moving the slide levers on the control panel. I show this in the video at time index 21:05.
      Let me explain how the Climate System works, then you will understand why you have to adjust the Heat/Cooling Temperature controls when testing the Actuators.
      The Climate System, Heating & Cooling, is divided into three separate systems; Heating, Cooling & Climate Control.
      - The Heating system: A Heater Core that has hot water pumped into it from the engine, that's why the car has to warm up before the heat works. Then a fan is placed on one side to blow air through the Heater Core (a small radiator usually under the dash) and then into the passenger compartment to heat it.
      - The cooling system: The same except it has an Evaporator. Its another small radiator that has cooled refrigerant, (R134A in most cases today), pumped through it by the AC Compressor attached to the engine and turned by the engine fan/serpentine belt. Then it has a fan, the same fan, placed on one side of the Condenser to blow air through it and then into the passenger compartment to cool it.
      - Climate control: Is a mix of electronics or levers that control Actuators that control Baffles. The Baffles control where the air from the fan goes. The air either goes through the heating side, the cooling side or both to get a mix of cold & hot air to control the temperature.
      In today's vehicles if the heat is working and the cold is working, but you can't control the temperature or which vent the air comes out, then it's the Climate Control system that's bad. Most of the time when you can't control the temperature or vents, it's a bad Actuator that's not controlling one or two of the Baffles. The Baffles themselves rarely ever go bad, they are just little doors that open and close. When an Actuator goes bad It's usually the plastic gear in the Actuator or the control panel electronics has some bad solder connections inside.
      So yep you have to move the heat from hot to cold and back to see if the actuator is moving the baffles to mix the hot and cold air, & to see if it's routing air to the correct vent.
      Climate Control Actuators is what this video is about, how to find the bad Actuator. Hope this not only answers your question but also helps you understand how it works.
      Feel free to ask more questions as needed. My channel is about educating people to allow folks to fix it themselves to save money. Thanks for watching and the great question. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The center vent doesn't have it's own actuator, it's fed by the left and right vents above the radio.
      - The bottom left actuator controls the passenger vent above the radio and the passenger vent by the window.
      - The bottom right actuator controls the drivers vent above the radio and the drivers vent by the window.
      - The Center vent above the radio has no actuator per se. it it's connected to both left and right vents above the radio so it is actually a blend of both temperatures. If you put the drivers temp full cold and the passenger full hot, it will be a mix of the tow temps, warm, not hot or cold.
      - The top actuator controls where the air goes, the floor vents, upper vents blend of the floor and upper vents or defrost on the windshield. Note: if you put the controls to defrost the the last two settings the AC automatically comes on and turns off the recycle control, the one with the "U" turn symbol.

      LOL yah that sounds pretty goofy. The cabin air filter is just that a filter it has nothing to do with the internal door placement and how they direct that air flow after it's filtered.
      There are two paths the air can take after it's filtered, through the heater core or the evaporator (AC core) or it can be blended to go through both so you can select how hot or cold the air is on each side. The problem is the plastic gears in the actuators crack and begin to slip and get stuck in what ever position it cracked.
