Marshall's dad dying was far more of a shock. That hit hard and very surprisingly. The mother being dead was already theorized on forums so I kinda already felt something like that was up.
Marshalls dad was personified and was everything anybody wanted in a dad. Howards mom was just an annoying screaming voice from the other room. I got the same kind of news one day as Marshall did and i still shed a tear when i see that episode. It should be number 1.
Also they foreshadowed it multiple times before the finale, like in “Vesuvius” or in “The Time Travellers” when Ted tells Tracy he wants ”those extra 45 days back” he probably wouldn’t have cared for an additional 1,5month with her if she was still alive
Marshall’s Dad death hit way harder. As it came out of nowhere and the joy of Marshall seeing Lilly to him slow progressing it just expertly done. The raw emotion is incredible and you can just feel his pain. Truly amazing acting.
@@newageBoundhippie Yes I am aware but none the less he was still required to act. The choices he made in his dialogue were better than any script could do. The disbelief in “my Dads dead” feels very real and finally the “Am not ready for this” is an absolute gut punch.
I think the worst part of that was that they had been setting up the pregnancy announcement all season, just to have that on screen countdown lead up to it.
Lily leaving Marshall Marshall's dad dying Barney finally finding his dad & asking why he couldn't be there for him Robin not being able to have kids Ted being left at the alter I feel like HIMYM was preparing us for the mother being dead by sprinkling in these sad moments throughout the series
Yes but the shocking thing is how Monica wants to, and is so ready to be a mother but turned out to be infertile. I mean yes Chandler wants a baby too but Monica always wanted a baby, even since Season 1. Damn, adoption is good too but not seeing Chandler and Monica getting their own babies is kinda sad.
@@jsw5545 Actually what I found infuriating was that CC apparently got pregnant during season 10 but the writers decided that the audience suspend disbelief while Monica - the one friend that you could practically lose when looking at her sideways - began showing in a really really obvious manner. Infertile couples that ultimately adopt or use surrogacy (or whatever they decide to do) FREQUENTLY end up with a little surprise due to the lack of stress re attempting to get pregnant at that point; due to many factors I won’t list here to annoy ppl but why the writers couldn’t have just done that with Monica and Chandler remains a mystery. If it never happened I could understand the rationale but since it happens OFTEN (I don’t mean to say ALL infertile couples end up this way but many do) so the logic to keep CCs pregnancy a secret baffles the mind.
"8 Simple Rules" did a fantastic job of paying homage to the legandary John Ritter. They allowed for the characters to say goodbye to Paul, and the actors to bid farewell to John.
This is a great list but you can’t leave out the Friends episode “The One where Ross says Rachel”. That was one of the greatest plot twists in television history because no one expected that. The writers behind the show talked about how one day, David Schwimmer accidentally said Rachel’s name instead of Emily in an earlier scene and the writers decided they would incorporate that into the wedding scene. Also, that episode ended on a cliffhanger which was the last episode before summer break. All summer long, everyone was talking about Ross saying Rachel and were all anxious to see what was going to happen afterwards. Ross saying Rachel is easily one of the most shocking and brilliant twists in the history of television.
For me the most shocking Friends moment was the revelation that Ross is the father of Rachel's baby: "Hey, my sweater! I have been looking for it for like a month!" My reaction upon hearing that for the first time was the exact same as Joey's lol.
so true, agree! but kids don't remember now, because we live in the age of the internet and Friends is everywhere, so people know these episodes from memory but you are right- those of us who watched it when it first aired, during the show's original run, it was a shocking and exciting twist, this episode and the ending, especially because we all, deep down, still rooted for Ross and Rachel in season 4!
Something that I’ve always felt is magnificently handled in 8 Simple Rules following the loss of John Ritter was how they showed the children and Kate dealing with the long term emotional fallout … all the firsts in the year following the loss of a loved one are handled with top notched heartfelt comedic realism
I can't believe John Ritter's death wasn't #1. I literally had to stop watching the show after watching those episodes because they were so hard to watch. I don't think I've ever cried more for a TV show than I did for those episodes.
“Call Me Kat” had a beautiful, touching farewell to castmate Leslie Jordan who had passed away a few months prior. The writers gave his character a happy ending by getting him and his partner married in Tahiti and saying they decided to move there permanently. The episode closed with Chuck Lorrie bringing out Jordan’s cast member chair, and his sparkly jacket from the first episode was gently hung across the back. Star Mayim Bialik spoke about how loved Jordan was and how much he would be missed. The actors stop trying to conceal their genuine emotions and Bialik ends the episode with “Love. Light.”, and the rest of the cast says together “Leslie.” It was a tragic event, but the farewell to Phil and Jordan himself was handled perfectly.
If you were shocked by the ending of HIMYM, you clearly didn’t pay any attention to the previous nine years of stories that had little to do with the titular mother. And they had been hinting that the mother was dead since the 2nd season.
MsMojo (all Mojo iterations) is Legitimately on of the best content creating channels around, on any platform. This episode is a stunning example of just how transcendent it can be. This episode was moving, poignant, provocative, eliciting so many fond memories, and made me cry. Thank you!
I swear, I was the only person outside of the HIMYM production that figured out that the show was actually about Ted and Robin’s relationship and not about the mother.
I said that in episode one. The ending was in no way a shock to me. I was surprised, however, at how much I really liked and enjoyed the mother and was sad to see her go. I also loved S. 9 that everyone hates. I love that they gave us insight to the future and gave the Mother time with each character.
Honestly Idk if I'll ever get over the Mother being dead and Ted ending with Robin. I was crazy about that show and I've never rewatched it like I do The Office or Parks and Rec. You've gotta know how to end your show well.
When Col. Henry Blake died on MASH I cried uncontrollably! I was little when that episode came on, and even though I knew that it wasn't real because of course it was only a TV show I couldn't help but cry real hard. Even to this day I can't watch that episode without crying.
I know this list is sad but I’m glad Superstore made it on here! It’s my favorite workplace sitcom and it’s severely underrated. It told so many great stories and Mateo’s was a long and integral one!
Well, HIMYM’S death would indeed have been a shocking moment except I was binging the sitcom (which my family knew) & thru some sort of brain freeze or something my sister blurted out this fact while I was only at s4. I would say that blunted the moment in a HUGE way. Marshall’s dad dying was thus much more of a shocking moment. Secondly, while just an HM, the infertility plotline on Friends was handled so well, so perfectly by the characters that it was indeed just as shocking as any moment mentioned, and IMPO, MP brought incredible empathy, dignity and loss to the scene.
All these twist were heartbreaking except for the good places which was heart bouncing also I had no qualms with Himyms ending because yes it was sad to learn mom died and Barney and robin got divorced but I felt teds gesture at the end was sweet when he and robin finally reunite after 23 years of being broken up but that’s my opinion I liked Himyms ending but others didn’t
What's sad mean the most from Howard's mom passed away and I was like wow😢. Still the character in the actress who played Howard's mom will live on rest in peace to her 🕊️🙏, the moment when Sheldon tells Howard that he lost his dad he had no one knows be by his side but now he does he's not alone
I can't believe you guys forgot the NewsRadio-episode where they mourned the death of the legendary Phil Hartman. What a shame. Not even a honorable mention.
Poor choice for How I met your mother. As others have mentioned, Marshall's father passing hit waaaaay harder. The fact that the mother is dead and Ted ends up with Robin is one of the most notoriously bad endings to any sitcom ever. It ruined the entire last season. I know they planned that ending from the beginning but the show evolved so far away from that ending making any sense with the show that had become over the last 5-6 years just made it that much worse.
What's shocked me the most John Ritter from 8 simple rules passed away I was like wow I mean the character and the father he never forget how great actor he was😢, I could imagine how Kaley Cuoco losing his co-star and sort of like a father figure rest in peace 🕊️ RIP 🙏 John Ritter. I think they did a pretty good job to honor his legacy
If you were gonna include an episode of Brooklyn 99 it should 've been the one where Terry goes out to find his daughter's toy and almost gets killed by another cop because he's a black man. It was horrible and too realistic and needed.
Hawkeys breakdown in M.A.S.H. I know many feel Henry Blakes death is the shocker, but Hawkeys breakdown hits me WAY harder. It shows how far you can push people in war.
Also there’s Bones where: 1) Vincent Nigel Murray gets shot and Killed in front of Brennan in the Jeffersonian. 2) Where Lance Sweets dies Smallville Where Ryan, the kid with a tumor that gave him a mind reading ability and who was like a little brother to Clark dies Chicago PD Where Erin friend Nina gets murdered The resident: Where Nic dies from a car accident
The fact that HIMYM didn't end when IMYM was a giant flashing neon sign that screamed "This show isn't really about how I met your mother!!! It's about how Ted and Robin wind up together. You know...the on-again-off-again relationship that started the whole show and has been the mainstay throughout the entire series. That one. That's what the show is really about."
Marshall’s Dad dying, Paul’s death in 8 Simple Rules, Terry being racially profiled, and Dr. Cox losing all those patients because of an organ transplant patient having rabies. Those are my top shocks, not in any particular order.
Ben was Jordan’s brother. (And the sister played by Tara Reid, her name escapes me.) Even though Perry and Jordan were divorced he and Ben were still very close friends.
i wasn't shocked that the mother in How i met your mother was dead the whole time. i had already suspected it as a possibility of how they were going to end the show
I was pretty shocked when Danny Devito came out of the couch butt-naked in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season Six Christmas special. It's pretty shocking that didn't make the list.
The entries for TBBT and 8 Simple Rules were sad, heartfelt tributes and arguably the best episodes of their respective series…but they were not shocking moments. The actors who played those characters had passed in real life, so it was only a matter of when and how each show would address the issue.
Suits when Mike goes to jail and a guy Harvey put away, Frank Gallo, is in the prison with him, and lets it be known that he will get his revenge on Harvey through what will happen to Mike is also a great pick bc it shows that for one of a few times that Harvey is powerless to help Mike and it shows that it really wears on Harvey bc there is nothing he can do.
Yay, i'm the first comment! Thanks for this top, Rebecca, it was very interesting. Have a happy tuesday morning and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well
How did nobody pick up from the pilot onwards that the mother was dead, I mean Ted tells his kids in painstaking detail everything, even things that had nothing to do with their mother, it was clear that this was Ted telling his kids about their mother because she was gone.
M*A*S*H* episode where Hawkey and BJ are on the bus in the woods hiding from the VC and the mother smothers her finicky baby. Hawkeye can't deal with it by saying "She smothered her chicken".
I honestly feel like I'm the only person who liked the ending of HIMYM. Like I felt nothing emotionally for the mother and was glad he ended up with Robin eventually
The part about Mateo being arrested that made me mad was that he ended up getting away with it. I hated him. He believed himself superior to everyone, tried to promote himself to a management position that he was terribly unqualified for, and ran from the truth instead of facing it head on. I was hoping they were writing him off the show when that happened.
I truly deeply love John Ritter but I hated it when he died because it’s painful and saddened. Of course it hurts too much I love him on Stephen king’s it he’s name was Ben Hanscom and on bride of Chucky he’s the cop sheriff chief kid, cade probably Ben’s dead on scrubs
As great of a twist The Good Place has, why is it on this list? It doesn't seem to fit with the other 9 here. Also, I understand why the other 9 are listed here, but I would argue they are not in the right order.
No to number 1. Im sorry but they mucked up the final season and the build up and the way they introduced her and rushed their short relationship just to say i loved Robin this whole time screw your mom.
HIMYM Ending Worst in TV History! Ted used and abused Tracie as nothing more than a baby maker and runs back to Robin as soon as the children were older. Ruin the entire show, I refuse to watch reruns.
Uuuuuuuugh. How I met your mother should have been an honorable mention. The Good Place Should Have Been Number 1. HIMYM is one of the most overrated show ever

The Danny Thomas Show. The episode features a wander named Kentucky Cal with a tragic backstory. The song he sings to the kids is heartbreaking.

Brian dying on Family Guy
I truly deeply love John Ritter but I hated it when he died because it’s painful and saddened. Of course it hurts too much I love him on Stephen king’s it he’s name was Ben Hanscom and on bride of Chucky he’s the cop sheriff chief kid, cade probably Ben’s dead on scrubs
Mash the death of Colonel Blake
Damn episode got me crying again
I loved HIMYM but then the last season happened and I lost all interest
S9 is very disappointing.

I have never watched the show again. And I love binging reruns. But not that show. NEVER that show.
@@jenheider7280 me neither I'll never watch it again even reruns
As great of a twist The Good Place has, why is it on this list? It doesn't seem to fit with the other 9 here. Also, I understand why the other 9 are listed here, but I would argue they are not in the right order.
No to number 1. Im sorry but they mucked up the final season and the build up and the way they introduced her and rushed their short relationship just to say i loved Robin this whole time screw your mom.
Just too saaaaad😢😢😢😢😢
the black-ish part is just pure political propaganda.
The century, really?
HIMYM Ending Worst in TV History! Ted used and abused Tracie as nothing more than a baby maker and runs back to Robin as soon as the children were older. Ruin the entire show, I refuse to watch reruns.
Too sad
Don’t forget the rabies episode
Terrible voice over in Scrubs.
wait a mo does the Mother die Next Year ?
Uuuuuuuugh. How I met your mother should have been an honorable mention.
The Good Place Should Have Been Number 1.
HIMYM is one of the most overrated show ever
