It was a hypothetical scenario inside Trump’s head. Trump may think (let’s be honest, he definitely does with his ego lol) he’s a great president, thus his re-election is in the national interest. Meaning, the national interest is integrated into his motive. Thus, it is not a purely corrupt intent. I believe that is what Dershowitz meant in the hypothetical used in his argument. Adam Schiff blew Dershowitz out of the water today. Dershowitz said all presidents do quid pro quo and gave an example. Schumer saw a horrible response so asked that the House delegation respond to the same question Dershowitz answered. Schiff gave a remarkable explanation with examples how some quid pro quos are okay and some are impeachable. It was like in basketball where Schiff and Dershowitz both leap up for a rebound with Schiff grabbing the ball away from Dershowitz and slamming it into the basket and coming down on top of Dershowitz.
Shiffs strongest argument was a hypothetical analogy.

Mels InTheKnow with all due respect, they did ask for witnesses and documents during the house impeachment hearings. Mr. Trump would not release any documents and blocked anyone from testifying. This whole “no evidence” argument is invalid. I believe if Trump is innocent, he should take the stand and/or allow others to testify on his behalf. I know if I’m accused of something (and innocent), id be there bright and early giving my side of the story and Id want everyone I know in there defending me. And I definitely couldn’t say “I’m not going and you’re not having any of the evidence, documents or witnesses.” I know he’s the president but my god you’d think he was king.

This argument is logical. Only regarding the quid pro quo. What about all the heavily redacted transcripts of emails, text messages, and phone calls. Was that in the national interest. 3:29 I don't believe it was in the interest of National Security. That is a cover-up.
What you lay out is so long as a president thinks doing something will get him re elected, and if he thinks he is good for the country, then that action is impeachment. I would like to say it is surprising a legal professor would file a baseless lawsuit but given the demonstration of your understanding of the law(which you directed me to watch) or lack there of, it makes more sense.

I'm Italian - so pardon my english - but I've nonetheless followed the entire live coverage of the impeachment trial on sleepless nights - taking advantage of the time zone - watching session after session intently and uninterruptedly (which not many Americans did, I suppose, and probably not even all of the republican senators in the hall...)
I strongly believe that a critical and free thinking cannot develop by disregarding what's happening over the rest of the world, and what the rest of the world thinks of us. I find it crucial for a better understanding of the inherent politic dynamics and to draw parallels and relationships between foreign and local politics and social issues. Sadly most of the voters nowadays live in a nationalistic cultural isolation and depend from mainstream information and social media groupthink, the results being under our eyes.
That said, during the progress of the impeachment trial I started to feel that all the defense arguments were driving to that precise point, that is suggesting that Trump's own strong belief of being the Best President Ever Possible as well as a heavenly blessing for America's benefit, and his resulting determination in pursuing this sacred and lofty aim with full strength and at all cost justified every possible president's deed, here included a "noble quid pro quo".
But I couldn't even remotely think of defense team going to overtly admit that.
So, when I heard Dershowitz uttering these precise words, I jumped on my chair. I felt harassed in my intelligence, I wished I was there in that moment, to slap him in the face and shout them what an utter nonsense they were facing.
And, as Schiff promptly and elegantly rebutted that perverse line of thinking, he got my immense gratitude and a - virtual - high five.
