So- salt or no salt on your watermelon? Gotta know how you do it! PRINTABLE RECIPE CARD FOR DEHYDRATING: www.thepurposefulpantry.com/how-to-dehydrate-watermelon/ 25+ Ways to use Watermelon : www.thepurposefulpantry.com/uses-for-watermelon/
A lil salt sometimes especially when it's not very sweet. Salt makes the sugar stand out so if it's not the best melon... salt it is. My mom put black pepper on her cantaloupe.
As a child I ate it with salt but as an adult I don't use salt. Thank you for this video. I grow watermelon and I have always hated the waste of good melon because I just couldn't seem to eat it all. Can't wait to do this this summer. I dehydrate so many things but never thought I could dehydrate watermelon. Just a note. I have used unbleached muslem cloth cut to fit my trays. Works great and I can wash them. Just make sure you wash and dry the material before you cut to size because they will shrink.
Salt! I do mine slightly different: First, PEEL the dark green layer from the whole watermelon before slicing; then slice the meaty part as you like - but my main focus here is the rind: Without the outer dark green layer, slice the pith (white part) into bite-sized or apple pie apple-sized slices, and boil until soft (~30-45 min.) [Trust me on this, the dark green will never soften, so you need to peel it!] Cool it down before storing in ziplocks in the freezer or using straight away. This rind can be used as a mock-apple pie (watermelon rind pie), or as a vegetable in a stir-fry. I use them both ways, and they're delicious! I store my dehydrated slices in the fridge; I find that they're very sticky otherwise, but the fridge keeps them crisp - just take out portions, chilled.
3:20 after the initial cut through half of the watermelon, I like to lay it flat on the pink flash and then cut another nice flat surface to rest it on - so that the watermelon isn’t wobbly as you’re cutting it
No salt...but Daddy salted. 🥰 I've seen lime squeezed on it too!! I make a watermelon in chunks in a glass of water with fresh mint leaves and lime freshly squeezed. Absolutely a favorit!!
Peeling watermelon efficiently: cut both ends first, so that watermelon can stand still. In vertical position, peel it from top to bottom, and around. After that, you could cut and slice the way you want without wasting any.
Salt vs no salt.......depends on the watermelon....if it’s GOOD and SWEET.... no salt. I pick my watermelons by knocking on them and listening to the sound....the deeper the sound the more ripe (or over ripe) it is. That was the way I was taught when I was young.....and I don’t care if people think I am weird when “listening” to watermelon. So glad I found this video, I will have to try this next year during watermelon season
I just did my first jerky.and candied rind with lemon and cinnamon....ooh so yummy! I peeled the green skin when it was cut up, but again, I had never tried it before Fresh watermelon is good too with or without salt.i love it both ways
I have been dehydrating for a decade. I have been doing alot of food preservation lately, dehydrating, freezing, canning, and I was driving just yesterday thinking about watermelon and how that it was one of the few things I have never preserved. This morning, out of nowhere this video popped up!! My youngest daughter (who will be 19 in 2 weeks. . .YIKES I'm getting old!) and my dad are HUGE watermelon lovers. Just a month ago they sat on the patio and ate a GIANT one just the two of them in a few hours! Isn't the first time or even the 10th time they did that and you would think the inevitable stomach ache that follows would have deterred them again, but it didn't. And I'm sure they will do it again! You would think that a 76 year old man would know better by now🤣 This is a PERFECT treat for them. I will give it a try this week. Thanks for the video!
I'll tell you something ,, watermelon is full of water and some fiber, my doctor suggested I drink watermelon juice three times a day just for the fact sometimes we don't drink enough water during the day...but if a person has diabetes they have to be careful... Watermelon in my book is the best part of summer. Enjoy. And God Bless
We my siblings and I are from the Midwestern states.. we were raised to put salt on watermelon...which our niece grosses out about but I have found if the watermelon is very naturally sweet I don't use salt on it which is rare but now and then I do just to bring better flavor out of it.
Okay, cutting the squares first is a stroke of genius. I've done dehydrated watermelon and it's incredible, but I'm always trying to figure out how to put all the wonky rounded pieces together on the trays. It's tetris, but less fun... lol. Thank you for the tip!! :D
Thank you for this recipe. Now to find an edible watermelon. Your videos are very informative. And I purchased a Cosori dehydrator. I had/have an old (30yrs old?) dehydrator. I have some frozen raspberries from my patch that I will be making into leather. Thanks again.
Great video, I have been dehydrating watermelon for years and love it. If you cut it a tad thinner, the watermelon will we be so thin that it just melts in your mouth!
I dehydrated watermelon this weekend. My cuts were pretty ugly but same thickness. It took about 15 hours. Tastes awesome. Can't wait to give some to the grandkids :)
Loved the video and I am gonna try it. Sorry that you got cut. I read your response about drying the herbs in a paper bag, in the car. It is a valid point. I have always done that, but I am going to rethink it. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing so much with all of us. ❤
Your opening remarks about why to wash the watermelon before cutting, made me laugh, because I just went through this with my family last night 😄 I love salt on watermelon 🍉 👍
@@ThePurposefulPantry I also wanted to say that, I completely agree with you that, seedless watermelon does not have the same great flavor that regular seeded ones do. And thank you for the great watermelon jerky idea. Time for me to get busy with that 😉
No salt, but I'm willing to give it another try 😉 sometimes I will sprinkle a little Tajin on. Last year I pickled watermelon. We really enjoyed it and the longer it sat in the refrigerator the better it was.
Pop was a Hoosier and he wouldn't consider watermelon without salt! I don't mind it but prefer not. Now, Cantaloupe is another thing. Gotta salt them! I am intrigued with the jerky and think it would be marvelous! Can't wait to try it!
My grandmother used to grow and sell blackdiamond watermelons we would follow her when she went to the watermelon patch waiting for her to pick one.... lol she would find one and slice it open. Then she would pull out that salt shaker from her apron... definitely a salt person here.
@ThePurposefulPantry, did you say watermelon from East Texas?! I’m in East Tx too. I just started getting into dehydrating after finding my Grannie’s dehydrator in storage. I’ve had my Mom’s for a few years and used it a couple of times, but now I’m really interested in figuring it all out…hence that’s how I found you and have been enjoying your videos!
No salt on fresh. However I had fresh chunks and some feta cheese first time was great together...love dehydrated watermelon, flavor so intense!! TY for advice in picking a watermelon. I slice lengthwise not in rounds...just me...then slice...ps. it be gone in 2 days here!!
Hey Darcy, I saw a video by prechance that made a fruit leather with Pomona Pectin, just adding the calium water to the juice or blended frui. Have you tried this? How did it work for you?, if you did .Thanks
Nope - I wouldn't bother ... but yes, adding pectin can help for low pectin fruits. I just prefer blending with applesauce and being done with it. I'm kinda lazy that way.
While conditioning my jerky the it started to stick together around a week plus in. Should I pop it back in longer or is that normal for watermelons high sugar content? no mold but some particles of melon sugar accumulated on the bottom
If my watermelon has alot of black seeds, can I still dehydrate them and eat them with the seeds or do I have to pick them out first and how long will these last vacuum sealed
We as kids did salt on watermelons but as adult the only reason we don't it if the the watermelon is sweet enough we don't need salt to enhance the taste although those are few and far between so we keep the shaker close by. Funny thing the grandkids don't use salt in the watermelon..lol

There are two things I always salt - tomatoes & watermelon.
SALT ALWAYS ON WATERMELONS, Cantaloupe, and Honeydew melon’s. I’ve been known to throw away an entire watermelon because it was Miley.
A lil salt sometimes especially when it's not very sweet. Salt makes the sugar stand out so if it's not the best melon... salt it is. My mom put black pepper on her cantaloupe.
Have you tried dehydrating other melons?
Always 🧂🍉
Had a friend from El Salvador that salts her Mangoes
This is the third video of yours I’ve watched tonight after buying a dehydrator and you’re already blowing my mind!
Have fun with it!

A Mexican seasoning named Tajin is amazing on watermelon. It's a mixture of salt, dehydrated lime juice and ground chili.
Tajin for the win. I eat it with Cucumber as well.
I've never heard of anyone putting salt on watermelon but I will have to try it next time I get one.
It's so good salted!!!

I've never heard of peeling and processing the rind. Sounds good and we enjoy stir fry.
I've never heard of using the rind in cooking but pickled watermelon rind is delicious
What an idea! I would have never thought of dehydrating watermelon. Thank you
It is quite fun!
I grew up in Missouri, and as a kid, we would salt our watermelon.
My husband’s family added pepper to their cantaloupe!

salt brings out the sweetness...
I also love pepper on cantaloupe.

I make a watermelon in chunks in a glass of water with fresh mint leaves and lime freshly squeezed. Absolutely a favorit!!

Grew up with salt, but don't use it as an adult. Just cutting salt whenever possible. Would love to taste the dehydrated watermelon!
Salt is good for you.
Another great video as I sit here looking at a massive seeded watermelon. No salt. 🍉❤️

My son is 2 and insisted on gettin a little watermelon yesterday... I put some salt on it(which he also loves) and it blew his little mind. Lol
