Spotting the Blakeney Point Seals and Exploring Wells next the Sea (Norfolk)

  • I spent a cold and blustery day visiting the North Norfolk coast. In the morning, I took a boat out to see the Blakeney Point Seals, predominantly grey seals who love to bask on the land owned by the National Trust, Norfolk. After picking up some Cromer Crab and Stiffkey Cockles (also known as Stewkey Blues) in Blakeney, and some other local delicacies in Cley, we make our way to Wells next the Sea where the heavens decided to open, just as we collected our fish and chips. We took a wander along the 1 mile path linking Wells Next The Sea town to Wells Next The Sea beach where we saw the colourful beach huts and wandered briefly through the pinewoods backing the Norfolk beach. With so many things to do in Norfolk, England, and only a long weekend to pack in as much as possible, a boat trip in the morning combined with a town and beach exploration in the afternoon was one of a few perfect days out in Norfolk. In the travel vlog or 2 that follows, we will rent our own boat for the day to explore the waterways of the Norfolk Broads National Park, and hit the hiking trails and hike to see more seals at Horsey Gap, also in the Broads National Park - culminating in what for us was the perfect long weekend, UK staycation.

Not that I want to be negative, but I do want to be realistic. The £20.00 each spent on the boat ride was quite the disappointment and afterwards we wished we'd chosen to spend the money on something else. A couple of days after this video was shot, we did a hike at Horsey Gap which was 100% free and gave us far greater flexibility with watching the seals. I'll be releasing that video in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, I'd love to know about your own holiday spending regrets - what have you parted cash for and afterwards wish you hadn't bothered?

I visited 20 years ago via a dinghy and there were a few dozen and we sat on the beach by the dinghy and were very near provided we stayed below the skyline..

Wells beach is superb and due to water coming over extensive sands the water is warmer than elsewhere..

It was SO cold when we were there that the idea of going in the sea never even crossed my mind, but now you've said this, it makes perfect sense that it would be so much warmer. A place I must go back to when it's lovely hot one summer!

Looks like a lovely area. Loved the look of those seals chilling out on the shingles, can't believe there are so many! Looked cold on that beach, at least you went prepared with that thick coat. Good old British weather ha!

Ah tell me about the good old British weather - it seems almost like a rite of passage that if it's a bank holiday weekend, it either must be freezing 🥶 or bordering into a heatwave 🥵 If you liked the seals, you'll enjoy a video I have coming up in a couple of weeks time as we found a place in Norfolk that gave us a lot more flexibility to view lots of them!

Wells next to the sea looks lovely even in the cold and wet. Thanks for the heads up on seal spotting for less that is not so tide time dependant coming soon. Looking forward to that episode.

Wells next the Sea really was beautiful despite the weather not being on our side that day. The other seals video will be out on July 4th, but let me know if you have a trip planned before then as I'm happy to share via comments if time is against you :)

Me & my wife have spent many holidays Cley or Blakeney. My favourite place. The miniature train has now gone at Wells.
My wife sadly passed away May 2021. And I've got Campervan now. I'm 78 & just come across your video on Broads initially. Went to Aldeburgh last Yr which is a beautiful town. Also went to Dunwich while there. A must to visit if in area. The history of that village is so sad.
Once town of 4000. People. Now only 200

Cley is pronounced as Cly. No clay

Sorry! I do try with the pronunciation of place names, yet like with Cley, I'm not too great!

Awful. Can't even hear the dialogue on the sea wall.

Ooof, yes, this was back when I didn't have a good mic. Sorry! Hopefully audio has improved in newer videos.
