Searching for TRUE GRIT 1968 filming locations

  • A confused and at times inept journey into the Colorado wilderness searching for the filming locations of Henry Hathaway's western classic "TRUE GRIT" (1969)
From the meadow where John Wayne delivers one of his most famous lines of dialog to the actual courthouse courtroom featured in this iconic American masterpiece...sit back and "fill your hands, you son-of-a-bitch."
    Enjoy!

Thank you for the kind words, Eric. This truly was an epic adventure to locate these sites. I still feel the chills when I first walked into the meadow. Honestly, I did cry. This is a special movie for me personally being born and raised in Colorado. I'd like to hear about your inspirational story sometime.
Thanks again and be sure to check out my "Mr. Majestyk" location video.
      God bless,
      Gart.

Gart, thanks for all the hard work. We had vacationed in Ouray for years. My parents went out in '68 from St. Louis to buy a lot and retire there. They did for over 20 years. Fourth street was blocked-off from the courthouse North one block with tables and chairs for lunch for the film crew, sound, make-up, etc. John Wayne (Rooster) and Kim Darby were talking to the crew and bystanders. Glen Campbell wasn't there because he wasn't in the courtroom scenes. When there was a break, my Dad aproached Marion Morrison and and asked if he could take some movies of him. My Dad told him his name and that he was from St. Louis and John Wayne said "I can't help that." I have the 8mm film.

I was just up at Deb's Meadow one month ago. What a difference a year makes: last going up the dirt road, I misread the signs going up the dirt road and went back to Ridgway to eat instead. I'm glad I did not get up there because I would not have seen the beauty of the area in the fog and rain conditions. This year was a picture perfect day as I reached the shoot-out area and got up to the top of the Pass. I saw the meadow and realized how small it was compared to watching the shoot-out scene but I was still glad to get there and see it. I missed the Sleeping Rock area but went to the top on the east side of Chimney Rock. Saw the house, the Lone Pine and McAlister's Store area last year before the weather turned for the worse. Outside of not seeing the Sleeping Rock area, the only negative was the condition of the roads going up to the meadow in certain areas but I was prepared and slowed down when it was required.

"Rooster Cogburn" was filmed here in Oregon, mostly in Smith's Rocks, Deschutes R and Rogue R. country. Maybe someone ought do one like this for "Rooster," if they already didn't..

Hi Garth. I have been to the states many times mostly in the south(Alabama) however driving on Last Dollar road in Colorado and walking on the plains of S.Dakota to the Black Hills is something I must do before I meet my maker...:LOL. John Wayne/John Ford has a huge impact on my life a portraying that America I wanted to see and I was dreaming about since early childhood(I was born in 1968). Later in 1978 I watched that Tv serie called `Cenntenial`. God I love your country.
The beautiful land is a Gods blessing to you all. Kind regards here from Denmark.

Wow Gart, That was incredible sir. I lived my life around ranches and horses in Florida and John Wayne was always the man. I made a wall with True Grit and Rooster Cogburn movie photos that I still have today. Bet I have seen these films a hundred times over the years. I was 9 when this movie came out and I always dreamed of riding that country. You just gave me the reason I needed to get off my ass and do it. What a great job you did sir. Second thing I would like to say is this project was a blast! If you love movies like I do you owe to yourself to visit a film location of a favorite classic movie, a near spiritual experience. Ned's place is on private land. Considering how many laws I disregarded during my visit this trespass would be easy...I just didn't want to get shot.

Gart, Once again, you've 1-up'ed your previous work. Outstanding. I watched True Grit on the big screen as a kid & never tire of seeing it again. Our family traveled all over that part of Colorado & spent many a night camping/moteling in Ouray. Dad got to be a judge one year in the Ouray July 4th Parade too. I've always wanted to visit some of the film-shoot locales, especially since I lost one of my elder Brothers to cancer a few years ago. He was a HUGE fan as well. Just like Russell, I'll be sharing this video with my whole family during Christmas. Out of curiosity, were any of the film-shoot locations flooded by the reservoir?

Now that I look back we visited Last Dollar Road area and especially the shoot-out scene. We knew at the time we were there because we talked about it. I wish I had paid attention to the house though. You can really get around some neat places on ATV's. I love Glen Campbell (major crush back in the day of True Grit) and have always loved John Wayne. Enjoyed the video very much. It's a totally different perspective of those filming locations. I just appreciate you taking the time to find some of these places. I would love to see one of the filming locations for Rooster Cogburn and the Lady if you ever have the time.

Thank you for the kind comments. You are, most likely, the last person to watch this video before youtube flipped out over the sacred title songs COPYRIGHT. They thought it best to screw with the audio in order to protect you. I enjoyed my trip to southern Colorado to discover these locations. My home state has gone down hill the last few years, so it's nice to find wholesome towns far from Denver and a capital building full of out-of-state politicians.
Anyhow, I truly appreciate your watching. I will look for more locations this summer. God bless, and take care.

The only thing I would question would be the horse stables, I belive they were located at the post office built in 1976

Saw the film when it came out with my family - always been a favorite. Then some 29 years ago I bought my place in Ouray only to find that much of the movie was shot in the local area. Can't watch the movie without yelling out all the locations.

Very much enjoyed your video. It is a lot of fun, and I appreciate you sneakin' onto the land by Last Dollar Road. We shared it on John Wayne fan club on Facebook. I don't know if you go on much, but if you do, you'd be more n' welcome!

@@GartWilliamsColorado I'm betting they know it draws fans of the movie and they want to get rid of the magnet draw that makes for traffic down that road. They want that area all to themselves. So sad for the fans.

Interesting thing is, even though it wasn't filmed in the Ozarks, that area looks like the Ozarks. I went to College of the Ozarks and the college owned 1000 acres. Thats what the film reminded me of- even if it was filmed in Colorado.

Just recently found your channel & subscribed -- you make GREAT videos -- & you're SO funny! Am I wrong or was that awesome "car chase" sequence a tribute to the amazing Mr. Wayne's movie "McQ"? (The awesome pipe made those scenes flawlessly PERFECT -- lol!) Your camera work is excellent -- I kept thinking you must've had a crew with you ... & the MUSIC selections were absolutely beautiful & 'just right' (it takes a certain 'ear' to be able to pull that off!). I know this sounds overly effusive -- borderline giddy -- but it couldn't be avoided ... I just really LOVED this video!
THE GOLDEN MOMENT: When you picked up that rock!! I thought I was the only 'rock grabber'! (Thanks for making me look more 'normal' ... lol)
WANNA SEE SOMETHING 'WEIRD'?? (how's THAT for a loaded question?)
    @ 4:23 I spotted a dark gray ' g ' & ' W ' on your rock (like I said, I'm into rocks, so I look for these things ... ;D)
You have to hit the PRECISE moment where they show up -- so it may take a few tries, but it IS at 4:23 (it's not my fault that you wouldn't be still & kept waving it around when you first picked it up -- lol -- but I TOTALLY understood your excitement!).
I did notice that it was easier to "catch" on my laptop than with the ipad -- so maybe that'll help too. Now --
@ 4:23 -- look to the Right of your Thumb Nail, where it's pressing down -- do you see what looks like a Gray, Cursive "O" ? Follow the line leading down from it, & you should see that it's NOT an 'O' -- it's actually a Lowercase, Cursive LETTER "g".
(If you don't 'see' it at first, try looking from SE to NW.)
Then, looking to the Right & slightly Down from there -- look for the Dark Gray "ZIGZAG". Viewed from SW to NE, you should see a Capital LETTER "W".
With the naked eye, these images may - or may not - be visible. Taking a photo (or video) always reveals variations in color & tone that our eyes can't immediately discern.
No doubt this will find it's way onto your list of "Strange Things People Have Posted About My Videos" (unless you don't have one, in which case it'll zoom to the top -- yay!) But the moment I spotted that, I knew I would eventually have to stick my neck out & share that with you. I really do hope you're able to see it -- because it's pretty damn cool!
The way I see it, that rock's been waiting all this time for YOU to come along & pick it up (I didn't see any others lying on top of the grass like that ...). And since it's got that dark, bold "W" on it -- maybe someone once tossed it to John Wayne & said, "Hey John, found your rock!" And MAYBE he carried it around with him, but on the last day of shooting it got left in his pocket, & some wardrobe flunky dumped it out by accident. At least that's what I think ... & there's a 50% chance it went down sort of like that -- lol!
I sure hope you still have that rock, because it REALLY IS a special one.
Hopefully this 'rock thing' didn't freak you out -- I promise you, I'm NOT the creepy kind of weirdo -- lol -- just a rockhound! Who also happens to think you bear a striking resemblance to a MUCH younger (better looking & more congenial) WILFORD BRIMLEY ... honestly, your voice, mannerisms, cadence of speech & sardonic wit -- ALL of those things reminded me A LOT of him ... which is a compliment -- he is one of the FINEST character actors we've ever had. His work in "Cocoon" & "Country" played a large part in making them such wonderful films.
Well this is WEIRDLY FASCINATING -- I wanted to make sure Brimley was still alive (he is!) -- and get this -- HE WAS ACTUALLY THERE ... FILMING "TRUE GRIT" -- IT WAS ONLY THE 2nd MOVIE HE'D EVER BEEN IN! He was uncredited -- working as an Extra, a Cowboy & a Stuntman because his best friend ROBERT DUVALL was helping him get into the movie business. Now THAT'S some powerful synchronicity!
I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure that's him riding up with Duvall @ 4:16 -- "stunt riding" the black horse on the far left -- filling in for "the Mexican guy" (who I noticed doesn't "sit" his horse very naturally when they aren't moving). As they come galloping up in this scene, the rider keeps his head tucked down & away from the camera at ALL times, until veering out of camera range -- all of which indicate that it was a stunt rider.
I'm almost 100% sure it IS him though @ 13:55 -- in the courtroom scene. He's in the front row of the "spectator seats" -- wearing a beige coat, directly to the right of the lawyer in black. He's got the big mustache & keeps his (bald!) head cocked to one side, staring right into the camera. Having seen this, I HAVE to emphasize this point: you DO NOT LOOK like him -- you just SOUND & MOVE a lot like him!
Whew! What a long post (sorry -- sort of ... lol!). I'll finish with one more bit of trivia. It was pretty cool that the old house sits on "Last DOLLAR Road" -- because the horse John rides in this movie was named "DOLLAR". It was one of his favorites & he rode it in several movies. I've remembered that since I was a kid, because there's an unusual brown circle -- kind of like a silver dollar -- that 'cuts into' his almost perfect blaze. If you're facing him, it's on the right side -- not far below his eye.
Once again, really love your channel -- keep up the good work, "Wilford" -- lol, lol!!
    ;D ;D :D :D

And the original story is about Arkansas and Oklahoma. The producers picked beautiful locations for filming but they bear no resemblance to where the story takes place.
