FINALLY, Someone explaining how to adjust adjustable end links
Hey Sean. Take it from this old shade tree mechanic that this video is one of the best I've seen for those of us who are always trying to improve our car's handling. Great job and thanks so much.
so many videos don't actually tell you how to dial in preload. thank you!
Commenting on an old video, but this was very helpful, so, thank you! I have a Tarett three-piece swaybar on the rear of my MINI Cooper, and for the longest time I couldn't seem to get it dialed in correctly and it was very noisy. Now it's completely silent, and the car rotates like a compass. Sweet! 😄
Wow!!! Need more of these delicious videos on TH-cam. Absolute nugget of information in short, bite sized 3 minute attention span video lengths. This really made it look easy and proper to do.
Just did this to my e90 xi on h and r coilovers. I’ve been lowered for too long without buying these! I got HP Autosport adjustable links. Did one side just as you explained car feels amazing .
Great! Thanks for the feedback Matthew!
Thank you 🙏 save me so much mystery headache, just installed new coilovers on my car the adjustable endlinks clanking sounds can drive you crazy if you don’t know it’s them
this is great and straightforward. i fitted new coilovers, adjustable drop whiteline links/end link and swaybar and then just forced the links into position. im fitting new track rod ends so i shall be doing my end links properly
careful, you probably have some preload that could be bad in the future, I did the same and popped one of the end links hitting a bump on a hard corner
@@aidankelly1994 hi yes my reply didnt make much sense. I was saying id done it wrong by preloading it and after watching the video did the correct procedure to remove the preload id put into it before even having the wheels on! Drives so much better now. I can rebuild an engine but suspension is lost on me.
@@tomwhit1982 ahhh i see you, that makes more sense! Totally the opposite experience here, almost no engine experience but i (sort of) understand suspension. Together we have a whole car lmao
This video came up in my analytics showing people watched this before clicking on my video about adjusting sway bar endlinks
Still use this video as a reference, amazing walk through! TY sir!
The most important is let the pivots of each side of sway bar horizontal that you didn't mention.
You could just put a jack under the lower control arm and Jack the car up until it comes off the jack stand, then make the adjustment to the link.
that's what i was thinking. no way i could get my hands in there once on the ground. how would you measure. fender to center cap and then fender to center of hub?
I think if you lowered the car say one inch in the front for easy numbers, then you add 1” to the length of the end link when comparing to OEM. That’s for the front. In the rear, you subtract an inch, if you lowered it an inch
What if a guy used 1.8" lowering springs? Same formula?
So if I install 2 of them do I just adjust one side still?
This is a great install video. I was hoping to find one where someone explained pre-loading them. What kind of issues would one run into if one link was loaded more than the other or preloaded improperly?
That was more complicated than I thought. I thought it was straight forward, remove and replace. The stock replacement is thats why I ask. What are the benefits for an adjustable vz a stock link? Legit question.'
I didn’t really understand why you only needed one drop link. Can you explain?
Sweet exactly what I was looking for!
When you adjusted the end link before you tightened the nuts in place, what were you spinning to find resistance? The center bar ?
Yes, when I'm laying on the floor with the car on the ground. You can feel the resistance.
SeanS54 why didn’t you do both end links? Wats the difference or why didn’t you need to install 2
SeanS54 wat if I have stock sways ?
Beat practice to replace both at the same time
Amazing how hard it is to find these instructions. The number of people installing suspension mods and making videos without going through correct setup is crazy. The other obvious question is why in the hell are these sold as pairs?
Really good simple video, thankyou
I just installed some of these adjustable links from some company called godspeed and i'm getting quite a lot of clunking noises now... actually more noise than my shot links made. What would cause this? Everything is tight... they did come with some 12mm sleeves to fit the larger mounting points for mercedes is this the cause?
You’re the man! Thank you for you this! 🙌🏻
Subbed
Everything? Sounds like a question?
lmao i didnt even notice until i read this comment hahah
I'm a little confused, how were you able to reach the endlink with the wheel still on? There won't be any room to reach at all, did you have to turn the wheel somehow to expose an opening to reach the endlink?
Im pretty sure he turned his wheel to get some clearance. Check @2:12. His wheels are turnerd
OK, while you are correct in that there is now 0 pre-load on your swaybar, you are wrong in that this is how to "properly" install adjustable end-links. You have completely neglected the ORIENTATION of the sway bar itself. You cannot use stock end links if you have changed your ride height at all (which is what happens during corner balance even if your coil-overs are set to at stock ride height). The sway bar will be less effective if the bar is pointed in a direction that is leveraged less by the end-link. Next time:
1) Put the car in the air
2) swap both end-links to adjustable ones but do not connect them at the top (or the bottom if that is easier to reach when the wheel is on)
3) Put the car on the ground, or, on ramps so that the suspension is loaded
4) Crawl under the car and position the sway bar so that the tab/mounting point of the bar is in the correct orientation (usually this is horizontal with aftermarket sway bars, but some stock sway bars have a lot of bends to make them less effective and they WILL NOT point parallel to the ground when oriented correctly).
5) Adjust both end-links so that they freely connect to the sway bar while it sits in its PROPER position.
You made good points but you forgot to add a driver in the seat to account for his/hear weight. ;-) Also, it really depends on where your coilover sway bar mounting point is... my method removes preload from the sway bar and many people only run one adjustable sway bar end link.
SeanS54 that doesn't make it correct lol the only time it actually causes any noticeable issues is if the sway bar is put into a position that now makes contact with a control arm or the chassis. Otherwise, no one's going to notice that their sway bar isn't being leveraged 100%. The car will just roll ila but more than it really should.
damn dude might be the best comment on youtube honestly. so much false info going around
What are the symptoms of bad installing the sway bar links? Beacuse my car when i turn only right in movement make clicking noises. Thanks
I have the Godspeed brand of end links. So I make sure they’re the same size as the stock ones rhen match them to the stock ones but don’t tighten down the lock nuts? Just put the end links in and let it settle then lock the locking nuts?
Thank you for the video. I have installed a set of BC Racing coilovers but i didn't replace the stock end links. Now I have a knock when i go over ruff road. Can this be because of the end links are not adjusted? PS all the top mount bolts and the coilover top mount bolt is torque to spec. Cheers.
Same I'm going to adjust mines today
Hello everybody. Is it necessary to torque it in newtons or just tighten hard? Thanks a lot
1:25 I noticed you were using another wrench tp hold the bottom end link stationary. Is that necessary with all brands?
Do the front wheels have to be straight when setting the sway bar?
Yes
Hai..if there is a clunking sound at the bolt joint link..but only on the driver side..
hello so i have ff type 2 coil over , does the FUNCTION AND FORM END LINK 185MM should be good or the 115mm is fine?
Hi Sean enjoy watching your videos ,will you be fitting adjustable drop links on the rear or are they not as important.Keep up the good work
Thanks! Adjustable rear end links are not as important- some people run without a rear sway bar if your springs are stiff enough. It's more important for the fronts since the fronts are doing the turning. I think the rear adjustable end links don't hurt but since I'm running a stock rear bar I'm keeping the rear end link stock.
goldenspanner 1 all depends on what your setting the car up to do. I run a stock sport front sway w/ adjustable links and TMS adjustable rear sway at full stiff w/ stock end links. I need the rotation back there and running a front sway makes the rear rotate slower.
thanks for the video, so just to confirm, i need one for my driver side, and then add weight and adjust the sway bar top and bottom until no pressure -peload. and tight it up when jacked up. Would this work for awd s3?
Please answer me if you can at 1:10 in ur video. My sway bar link looks like that .. do the blacked out head suppost to move left n right? Mine is moving like tilting.. is that normal.. it looks like designed to do.. but one at the begiining at the video that bar link seems not deigned to move
How did those spherical end links last you? Do you street drive your E46 M3 also?
I never knew you had to add weights to lock the nuts down
It is to make up for your body weight when you are actually in the car driving. That way the end links preload is set for when you are actually in the vehicle, if that makes sense.
Hello! I’ve watched this video and did my end links but I’m hearing a clunking noise 😢
Hi Sean, I have just fitted coil overs to my Ford fiesta st, they came with adjustable drop links to I now just got them while it's jacked up, it just doesn't seem like there will be enough load on the sway bar then though, cheers
Just as how you want little to no preload on springs, the same applies to your sway bar. You want your suspension components to act independently of each other. Zero reload is a good thing. Thats why helper springs are a thing when it comes to setting preload on a coilover spring.
Cool vid. Is it true that lowered vehicles usually require longer (not shorter) end links?
Depends on if the swaybar sits above or below the link mounta
Mine needed shorter
So helpful. Thank you
Installing regular end links on BMW X3, my question is are the two sides the same? Like is there a specific side or it’s possible to use the “right side end link” on the left driver side?! I accidentally bought one labeled as the right side for the passenger side is it true I bought the wrong side and will have to buy the one for the left hand side?
Same part number left and right. Your good.
Bagged my car, first turn out of garage it snapped both end links, I think they were too long for the new setup and failed under the loading as the wheels turned. Will be picking up some adjustable end links soon. Can I follow the same process in video, but for both sides simultaneously? Or should I get a spare oem link and do one side oem and one side adjustable, then both sides adjustable after?
It's hard to say Oscar. The adjustable end links work great for static height. Since you're bagged your height is dynamic and will change. I'm not sure what end links the bagged guys are running.
I'll try asking the sellers and see what I can determine is best for my application. Thanks for your input Sean
Cool, no worries Oscar.
Would you say most adjustable end links are universal?
Absolutely not
I apologize for the confusion. Why does the car need to be weighted? I don’t fully understand the correlation between that & preload. I thought it’d be better to have the weight of the car distributed evenly.
It is to make up for your body weight when you are actually in the car driving. That way the end links preload is set for when you are actually in the vehicle, if that makes sense.
I am assuming the threads are in opposite directions on each end of the link. Otherwise turning the link would not adjust the length of the link. Can you confirm if this is correct?
You are correct Robert, opposite threads on each end. With the car on an even ground, you can easily feel the preload change from zero to something as you turn it.
I just recently changed my sway bar which is shorter than the stock one...but Im still using stock stabiliser link...but it frequently keep on loosen...and I frequently needed to retighten the nuts between sway bar and stabiliser link...should I get the adjustable stabiliser link ?
It shouldn't loosen if you torque it down... however if you feel your stock links are too short than you should definitely get adjustable end links.
Hi thanks for reply...Do I need to use torque wrench to tighten it back?
You should use a torque wrench to tighten down the sway bar to spec. As for the adjustable collar on the end links, there's no way to torque that down- just snug it up.
Is your rotor on the wrong side?
that's the correct way actually
You can run only one adjustable end link on one side and the stock end link that is not adjustable on the other side. In reality, it doesn't make a difference IF there is no binding or hitting of components and the sway bar end, in most cases, are horizontal. You would only adjust one side and that's it. Its kinda genius and then you have another adjustable end link to use as a replacement or spare. The sway bar shouldn't be fighting the other side if everything is level and the car is sitting there flat. This should be done on level ground.
If it's only necessary to run one adjustable link per sway bar on a corner balanced car, which side is preferred to run the adjustable link on, driver side? Or can it vary depending on the adjustments made to achieve the finished corner balance result?
No mate. Its the pair . One for each wheel
Lol this guy running one adjustable end link. True race car
@@fearthereaper5663 no, he's clearly running ONE adjustable end link on the front bar. The opposite link is a non-adjustable oem link.
@@tonytruong3060 yeah, apparently one adjustable link and one oem link on the fr bar.
2:20 what are you twisting ? Is this the same sets you do if your installing both front adjustable sway bar end links
Great vid, thanks.
Thank you for this video🙌🏻
What are the symptoms of pre load on sway bars
Having a scrotum drag across your face while cornering.
Great info. Many thanks
Thank you!
Nice Adjustable link stabil
Good video
I think you spent more money to leave it with the stock adjustment. that's not the function of the end links adjustable
The purpose of the adjustable end links is to remove preload from the sway bar, especially important when getting the car corner balanced. Watch at 2:11 where I remove preload.
good
It's also to shorten the sway bar since you've lowered your car and shortened the distance.
Some one explain to me why he only installed the one side ?
awesome thanks man
only for M3?
Perfect thanks
would that had been better if the endlinks were installed prior to corner balancing?
Nope, you want to disconnect the end links when you're corner balancing. Once the car has been balanced then you install the adjustable end links and remove all pre load.
ok I see. never done corner balancing on mine yet.
I highly recommend getting it done. The car really feels more balanced on track (no pun intended) LOL.
nice! yea I will consider getting it done man
Why not just do it even on both sides
Impossible to do if your lowered/slammed like me
Jordan Walsh whats the point of having sway bars if you're car is slammed?
TunerBattle so there’s no preload on the stock sway bars
wack how I mentioned OE and GC endlinks yesterday somewhere and now TH-cam just happens to recommend this video...
1:55 - 02:04 put some weight to adjust ideal stabil link
why is only one side required?
You only need one to remove preload from the sway bars. You only use two adjustable sway bar end links if your stock sway bar end links are too short or too long for your coilovers. Also, if one of my sway bar end links go bad I have a spare. :-)
ahhh ic, youre working with links that are already the correct length. thanks for clearing that up, great channel!
thanks!
SeanS54 Let me ask you this: I'm on bc coils and have upgraded sway bars. Do I need adjustable end links to remove preload or stock are fine?
I don't track but I drive my car spiritedly and drive it really hard at times.
Once you already set the end links in they're set. They dont go up and down unless you retake them back out and adjust them. This makes no sense
The sway bars pivot within their bushings and based on suspension movement. Adjustable end links help remove preload, which is important if you're corner balancing your car.
Why adjust it to "stock" size? If your car is lowered, it must be shorter. You did it wrong.
@@gbalstad shorter or longer depends on the location of the bracket on the strut. If getting coilovers or aftermarket struts, the location of the bracket will determine whether the endlink needs to be shorter or longer.
Spinning the center rod changes the length of the endlink when installed. An endlink does not have to be removed to be adjusted.
Why adjust it to "stock" size? If your car is lowered, it must be shorter. You did it wrong.
It depends on where your mounting point is on your coilovers. Some coilovers have different mounting points.
What position does the sway bar need to be in?
