I live here too and honestly its not bad... I mean we were ranked third best city in the world to live in. Traffic times were a factor and yeah sure it gets grid-locked at rush hour but I can usually get anywhere in the city in about 20 minutes-25 minutes. It works to me. and the river valley network is so useful and efficient once you understand it
I just wish the construction of the LRT to the west side would go more smoothly, that has great potential to free up the roads. Awesome idea though. Glad to see technology being used on the street.
people who talk about anywhere in Canada being innovative hasn't been many places. i have lived all over north america and american cities have a far better transportation grid because of the Interstate Highway System which came out of the foresight of Ike Eisenhower, so that in the event of another world war the army, marines and national guard could move and their equipment could move in a way consistent with national security. freeways and overpasses were built everywhere by the sixties.
@econdrone You pay for it than. I want no part of buying overpasses for that road. I'll just drive down 137ave when it gets congested. The overpass on calgary trail cost 250 million, if I am not mistaken, and required considerable land acquisition. Doing the same thing to the many intersections on the yellowhead would be a nightmare, and is unecesary, considering that there are alternative routes, and we have a ring road for through traffic.
Tomorrow's transportation will not be road travel. Think Big! Edmonton is a great test bed for cold weather travel and innovation. Trying to sort traffic is futile. It is an organic system which, if you try to control it, will modify itself to get around your controls. Instead focus on moving to public transit, underground, air, rail, etc. Make better pedestrian walkways downtown for the cold winter.
Yellowhead is not 'smart' driving. The Henday is. It's amazing. Thank you for finishing it and the foresight to build it! It's massive! It's fast, it's awesome. I've travelled all over the world and that is an over engineered road that will lead Edmonton into the next 30-40 years of traffic.
Yellowhead should have overpasses not traffic lights. I live there and can tell you that traffic sucks really bad

Only One Thing That Would Make This Better: Less Bumpy Roads Throughout Edmonton.
