Thanks to Mazda's "gramme saving" design and engineering strategy, the baby 2 is great choice for those looking for a efficient, competitively priced supermini that's also good to drive. The Japanese firm developed the 2 together with Ford and the Fiesta, and the two cars chassis and suspension -- as well as basic design. But while Ford invested energy in making sure the new Fiesta turned plenty of heads, the low key Mazda focused on keeping costs down and resale values strong. Not as common as the Fiesta, it is good to drive, but has firm suspension and is noisy on the motorway.

Owned one of these from new since 2011. 120,000 miles later it's still original save for tyres and brake pads. One of the best small cars I've ever had.
i drove this car yesterday. the us version and what he says about the gearbox is really try... its kind of impressive to have this much fun in a car like this. best car to drive in its class (in north america)
just brought this last week loveeeeeeeeeeeee it
I recently bought this exact same model, 1.5 liter petrol with 103 hp. It has 210.000 km and the engine is still smooth as a new one, you can barely hear it when it runs. It cost me 2000, i just replace the oil and the front brakes, and it has some small scratches here and there but, for 2000 its a great car. Fuel consumption is from 5 to 7 liters depending on if its city drives or highways drive. The brakes costed me 120 bucks and its chain engine.
I just went outstation with my M2 and for my 1000km trip, and i loved this car handling and performance espeacially On those B roads. After 8k km on the dash, it return 17.5km/liter highway with constant at 115kmh and 13km/lit city (with some traffic jam) NHV is acceptable considered on the car purchase price....But with the 16" wheels you need to be careful on crubs and polt holes. Maintainance should be ok and since Mazda is quite reliable so i think it should be no problem.. happy motoring
i love this guy review he does everything that i want to know
this car is the best
Thanks for this review Matt. It helped me decide that a Mazda 2 is the car for me. Small and zippy, does everything I need it to do.
After 42 years of driving, I've done enough shifting and wanted an automatic this time. The 4 speed (the only A/T choice here in the USA) was really hurting on the freeway. It hated any speed above 55MPH and really lets the driver know with the noise and strain to keep up with traffic. Too bad, because if not for that, I would have bought the darned thing. PS I got the Hyundai Accent with the 6 sp and love it.
Best reviewer of cars in the net
I drive one this week. Had it for 24 hours. It is very enjoyable to drive and very responsive and agile. Only thing I didn't like about it is the position of the gear box. It happened to me several times that when reaching for the radio my hand hit the gearbox (auto) and sent it into neutral.
You are a very good reviewer :)

I got one second hand as my first car and what a great choice it was
How’s it been?
which engine did you get?
@@jukebox2568 perfect not any issues so far after a year and 9 months
@@Ssh52 1.5
@@antonioconte7093 Nice!
I'm thinking of getting one as a first car
Was insurance quite a lot? Since the engine is more than 1.4 and it has 'sport' in the name
Unless you're not from the UK?
Ordered one 2012 model. cant wait uintil end of this month. Superb car"!
Have this Car Right Now Amazing
I am looking into buying 2009 model for my wife. I noticed most popular are 1.3 engines, but some are 1.5 sport. Which one would you recommend? I was thinking 1.5 , but not sure if the suspension is any different than 1.3 . Are there any other major differences between 1.3 and 1.5 versions?
Now CarWow got this guy on board, Matt Watson
Getting mine on wednesday
@Disawat i have a mazda 2, drive it everyday, its actually really fun to drive and is very comfortable. we can usually get 5 adults in the car no problems, maybe abit squishy at the back but hell, it has a good stock sound system aswell, just needa buy an AUX cable and u can pump it up! over all, i love it, takes bout under AU$ 50 a week for petrol, for me
Bought it in 2021 and it's by far my favorite commuter car since then.
best car reviewer on youtube
Yep he best in my opinion
I just bought this as my first car :D im picking it up in 2 days CANT WAIT!!
Are you still using it? How it handles?
Interesting that nobody in the US reviews this car so enthusiastically. They say the shifter/steering/handling is nice, but they have nothing nice to say about the 1.5 engine.
It was my first. Nice little car, and quite nippy off the line too, though not very fast overall. Just don't leave the lights on like I did... had to ask my neighbor for a jumpstart today :P
The 2013 model i got has a reminder which gives off a loud beep when you leave the lights on
A brilliant first car and has been very reliable for me
@Lufbul good for you 👍
This is my first car, except i have the 1.3 in black. Picked mine up a few days ago. Very good reliable car. Maintainance is cheap. Mine has steel wheel trims, so they can be easily replace if you hit a curb. Excellent 1st car. Very nippy 👍
@@joshuatopliff2092 how’s the car been for you?
@Juke Box the cars been very good. Only costs so far is a tyre and windscreen wipers, general maintenance. It has 117800k on the clock and going fine so far. Has its mot on Friday so will have to see how it does 👍
@@joshuatopliff2092 ah that’s great to hear thanks! I’m thinking of getting one as a first car myself! Good luck with the MOT!
not a bad car rented one recently in Cyprus, noisy in the rear and suspension is rock hard, so that the dash shakes, and the glovebox door rattles yes I did test the tyre pressures!
But it handles well and quite punchy!
It's interesting to note that he didn't mention it's built on the platform as the Ford Fiesta. You'd have to blind not to notice it.
I bought a black Mazda2 Tamura in June I love it!
That's what I want after my insurance renews in April. Love the look of this car.
My first car, just bought one 😁
looks pretty cool
My girlfriend has one and it's a nice car. I've driven it. It doesn't handle bad. Interior space isn't bad either. The boot is big enough for shoping. Also it can play MP3's. My car doesn't :( Anyway, the performance is the issue. This car feels slightly sluggish for me, but i'm a petrolhead, so that doesn't count. When the review guy said it had a nice gearbox, he is right. Shifting is very easy and i enjoy that quite alot.
If my gf can park this car, then it's easy to park :D
Mazda 2 is my dreams car alongside with Peugeot 308!!!
Awesome little car.
i want a mazda 2 as my second car!
the 2007-present Mazda 2/ Mazda2 Jinxiang/ Mazda Demio is assembled in
Hiroshima/Hofu, Japan;
Nanjing, China
Rayong, Thailand (2009-)
Bogotá, Colombia,
Tehran, Iran (2011-)
Still looks modern
i want this as a first car!! :O
mazda 2, suzuki swift or hyundai i20?? which is best please? price-wise, efficiency-wise and quality-wise please? This will be my first car - a small city car is what i need and i can't choose between the 3 i mentioned above :S help please?
dear mr. car tester we in croatia don't have IKEA yet, does it mean I don't need to care if the rear seats cant fold completely down?
@Iwillnotdoit comfort is good, you've got enough space even if you're tall or big. The drive is good, you can notice the bumps a bit more though. You should visit a dealer and test it out, its a great car.
The one we have has an aux jack socket in it but dosen't come with the cable
Really nice gearbox on this. If I was buying my first car again, I'd get one of these. You can get a decent one for £3k now.
Antonio Gomes_1988 I’ve found one with 50k on the clock for £5,500. Is it worth getting?
RSE7EN I think that one is too much for the mileage in my opinion, however depends on the year. I'm basing this on my girlfriends mum paying £5k for a 2011 with 25k. Had a full Mazda service history and a 3 month warranty. Was also a tamura special edition so you get folding wing mirrors and some other nice bits.
@@PSwarrior25 I just bought a mazda 2 venture today. Dec 2012 with 40,000 miles. I pick it up tomorrow. Only cost £5100
I will get one as my first car for sure
current market in 2022 i got 70,000 clocked for 1.5k and it feels like new really good second hand buy
Mazda 2 Compact, I thought it was Mazda 2 sedan but nvm, still good looking car and nice review.

This host has more charisma, than the entire line up of hosts in Fifth Gear, put together!
my father have it to but sedan version.. awhh i cant wait to get the newesr model of this :D
The hard plastic is really a non issue compared to other cars in this category. If you are buyer worrying about the plastic go for to of the line model 'Genki' It has a nice leather wheel and leather gear knob.
Maybe my drive to work everyday might be fun in this car!
@Jeffredo729 im swapping my little 1997 hyundai excel for a mazda 2 neo or maxx within the next year aswell.
I drive a mazda 2 and I love it!!!!
Fantastic engine best small car you can buy
this car kicks ass xD i'have one :D fun 86 cv version !
you're good! i subscribed :)
Who actually goes around touching their dashboard anyway? so who cares if it is soft touch or not.
My my, aren't you a pretty one?? I hope to be picking one of these up at the end of the year, once I've passed my test xD
Matt could you please do the Fiat 500?? please please please!!!
test drove one today, couldnt stop laughing at the sound of the turn signal, as my mum says "sounds like legos"
How do I check the petrol level on this car??
1:07 after 10 years my glovebox has developed a rattling
@togusa Thank you for that but I already got me a mazda 3 hatchback and i love it its a nice little hatch i would reccomend this car to anyone that looking for a good fun car and every day drive thank u
i had the M2 since jun' 09. n couldn't find any defect
2:01 Is that a little bit of Air Time?
Well built and not rattle-y? I had a 1995 Mazda and it was neither of these. Enough so that I've avoided them for 15 years. Are they building better cars these days? I'll be comparing it to my recent Kias and Hyundais which are very high quality, as good as Honda and Toyota when they were at their peaks. Thanks for any input in advance.
Is that Matt!?
great car..
.. I finally got over the SUV syndrome I changed my EcoSport TITANIUM 2017 ... Friends I just made myself of a demo/testdrive that belonged to VEHICULOS DEL CAMINO * ... MAZDA 2 Grand Touring LX SEDAN (red mazda) ... 2020 model with only 4 thousand kms .....! I am happy ! ... and you know that I am fascinated by everything: it also has a CD system ... *agency
This is the car I am in dire need of. But my pocket can't allow
Can you adjust steering wheel alignment?
Shaz C you can move it up and down but you can't move it closer to you.
I have qui a few choices on my mind not sure what to get....I got a the 2008 Toyota highlander need somthing small good around the city
Mazda 2 or Ford fiesta or The Yaris
PPS gona put a small T5 turbo After buy :D Thx
@samartz That's funny I was watching his car reviews and I said to myself man they should hire him in the new top gear series, like he'd have his part in the show where he 'll make his review of normal cars ^^
This is perfect for me! It isn´t good enough to go to ikea!!! :D yayyy!
"The plastics are a bit hard... ow!" Well don't go round punching them then!
@Iwillnotdoit it's good! very easy to drive, park. Even though it's a small car it's quite spacious in the back aswell and it's good on petrol aswell. Worth every dollar
ford fiesta is worth checking out
Sounds like my old mazda 323f. :-D
@II4037man NO. Get a mazda 2 with the 5 speed manual. It feels much faster, and it's a hoot to drive.
I bought my Genki in 2009 and haven't had this problem, recently smashed into a pothole and destroyed 2 of them though =[
@cheesey12354 quality the mazda wins hands down...mazda IS known for the veeery good quality and reliability..and its also a "better name" then the other two so it may well hold its value better..ive driven one, and i loved it (consider i work for audi and ive driven, for exemple, nissan GTRs and stuff)..very good car indeed..however, ive also been inside the suzuki..and specialy if u go for the new model, thats also not a bad choise..i dont have experience with hyundai, so i would mazda or suzy
Brits are the best of car reviewers.
Dent on the hood? Why!?
@togusa or and its a 2011 Mazda 3 thank you :)
Why do modern day cars sit so high??? Why don't I feel a connection with the car in corners? I've driven the Vw polo, Vauxhall Corsa, Mitsubishi Space Star, Suzuki Swift, they all drive like a van... No feeling no connection...
I wonder about this car!
in this car you can sit quite low
This is the exact Color of my Mazda 2 I can’t seem to find my Color code
Doesn't anyone know if you can fit a pram in the back?
Declan McFadden You can, but there's a relatively high lip on the boot - slightly more difficult to lift things in and out of than some competitors.
I would love to have this car or test it out. Yummy. I'm a Mazda fan and on top of that a small car fan. Especially a sporty small hatch.
lool lots of trips to ikea,, i love brits
Does anyone know where the fuel filter is on this car?
it does not have a fuel filter.
nice car to drive...
How's the reliability, I'm looking at getting one of these?
I got a model from 2009 an there is not a single problem! The interior don‘t make weird sounds from the plastic and the have no Problems at all
Very reliable
@@nixohuxp3964 just as I write this my younger sister just bought a 2009 one as well, it'll be good to see how it is
@@gordonremsey8055 how’s the car been, if you know?
So this or Ford fiesta?
REVIEW FIAT PANDA!
when I hear the name Mazda I think of rally cars. So they've got their origin in sports.
I have the 1.3 ts 2, bought as an emergency car after mine was written off. We are going on for a year and 135k now 😂
What is the fuel consumption like?
@@maxprins5762 I was getting a good 50mpg, loved the car!
@reddexred he already has
this car is damn fun to drive high revs, hahaha
if only they didn't make it smile...
i love his review but why does he always care about dashboard's plastic? i dont really care how hard can it be..
I want to get the 1.5 liter petrol engine.. anyone know if its too noisy on the motorway?
B B not really that bad I guess tires matter as well, put it into cruise control and its nice and quiet
Good first car?
B B yeah if you're lucky! It's my second car got it recently
I literally dont see the issue lol
I am from India. how could I purchase this car overseas
Hello mate you can buy from Iran and drive across. There was a few of these made in Iran. Comes with sat nav etc.
Why didn't they keep the face of this car 2012 USA version?? If only...
