I'd still get the mansion and Bentley if I could afford them, but the Mazda 2 is just so insanely good that as a daily car, it is epic. I can't wait to see the mods that start getting made for this baby once us Americans get our hands on it.
swweet little car, shame they dont do a 120 bhp version, a 8.5 sec 0-60, and 125 top end would be an absolute monster of a warm hatch, id get one defo, and they look amazing, id rather have the 1.5 sport than the fiat 500 1.4 sport, actaully, wait the interior....
fatcatsarefun I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to get a 1.5 to 120bhp. That with a little further weight reduction and some suspension tuning would likely get you to the 8.5 second 0-60.
@cranding actually it's the sport, so it's got a 1.3l or a 1.5l petrol engine, or even a 1.6 diesel engine. for this one i'd bet for the 1.5l petrol, cause it's the most powerful with 103 bhp
@youngbleeb Ok, you are right. Some older Ford models were using Mazdas platform, back in 90's. But I was talking about newer cars, like Mazda 3 and 2. The older and newer Mazda 3 were using Ford Focus C1 platfrom and Mazda 2 are using Fords B3 platform.
It's a small city car ( 1.3 or 1.5 litre engine). There's no mention of it being better than any sports car. The dude even says it's not trying to be a hothatch...I think it serves its purpose well. If you are looking for more muscle try Mazda 3 MPS.
Bought my Mazda 2 this morning in Australia. Great little car. The Aus version is heavier though because it has extra safety features. But very fun to drive.
But, the Fiesta is a lot heavier. 5-door hatch: 2537 lbs (1150kg) The Mazda 2 (I don't know if it's 3-door or 5-door) is 2100 lbs (953kg). One of the biggest selling points of the Mazda2-Fiesta brothers (sisters) is their lightness and the Fiesta is much weaker in that department. I guess that's why weight saving isn't much emphasized for the Fiesta.
To clarify a couple of things, this isn't a Mazda 2 MPS - no such car exists. It's just a plain Mazda 2. Still not a bad wee car though... One more thing, 'probar' in english in that context is 'test' - the word 'prove' is more 'comprobar'... for example, "they proved that it is a good car" --> "comprobaron que era un buen coche". Thanks for uploading all these 5th gear videos!
Not sure, only just started advertising it in the UK. Looks like a nice small version of the Mazda 3, wonder if it performance anywhere as near. Seeing Mazda 3 MPS is the fastest, most comftable hot hatch around.
@youngbleeb Fifth, the US Mazda 2 weighs 1050kg; the Ford Fiesta weights 1115kg. That's nothing to write home about, and the Mazda 2 weights less simply because it has less equipment standard. Sixth, the Ford Fiesta gets 40 MPG highway, while the Mazda 2 can only muster 35 MPG. This is without taking account that it should be the other way around because the Mazda 2 has less horsepower and less weight.
Where i live in Scotland it was snowing at the start of may, and during the winter we don't have roads their ice tracks with poles at the side of the road to let you know where the edge is and this is for upto 3 months of the year. The roads have fords running across them and landslips and pot holes are major problem. But the 4x4's are too heavy on the fuel so looking for a smaller car for spring to winter.
@youngbleeb May I correct you, dear Sir. Mazdas are based on Fords platforms, not Fords on Mazdas. For example, Mazda 2 is based on Fiesta, Mazda 3 is based on Focus.
@youngbleeb it's not based on it, it was a jointly developed. Think of the Saab 9000, Fiat Chroma, Lancia Thema and Alfa-Romeo 164. Essentially the same platform but dressed differently by different manufacturers. One is not based on the other and some became much more popular than the other.
This is a Fiesta. Because of its sales success Ford is using the chassis to bring a subcompact to N.A. theyre the SAME people !! I'm still buyin a Fiesta though :p
I just bought it, so that's not true. But my car sales man said they are going to change this coulor and they will make orange ones. Check it out. Maybe you can still get it.
Best in class for sure. When it comes to US/Canada there will be nothing else to consider (Fiesta is next-best thing though) if you actually care about a car's X-Factor. If you don't then get a Honda Fit and keep wearing your pleated trousers.
cool car, i like it way better than the honda fit, and i love how it's so tiny and it's more lightweight than my honda crx si that's 5 inches shorter in length and 7 inches shorter in height, not bad, and it looks pretty cool too, i wouldn't want one cause they're not fast but i'd like to see mazdaspeed2 of this car.
consumedbyfire13 our UK crx is lighter than the US spec si. My crx with factory d16a9 ( dohc zc) only weighs 899 kg or 1980 lbs. Without any weight reduction
My original comment is there for you to read, since you haven't yet. What I said is that they claim a stopping distance in this clip which is SIGNIFIGANTLY shorter than supercars. Can you spell Ceramic Brakes?
I've drive it before, actually my friend's car with loads of option, sadly in Thailand doesn't have manual tranny in the highest version for Mazda 2. After I've driven I had to say it's very lovely!!! I want one!
The coefficient of friction is independent of mass. The braking distance will not change with added load, in any car. And braking from 70mph to 0mph in 25m!!! A Ferrari 458 stops from 62mph in 32.5m.
@youngbleeb It's getting more buzz because it's a better car. It looks better, has somewhat better fuel economy, has a more powerful engine, is more fun to drive, and has a lower asking price. There's also more and better available trims for the Fiesta. Finally, more and better marketing can go a long way. There's tons of ads for the Fiesta; I've yet to see one for the Mazda 2.
Indeed the inertia acting on the vehicle is greater and so the friction force acting on the car must also increase. But remember this force is generated by the road and acts on the tyres. This is where the coefficient of static friction comes in (assuming no lock-up) which is the ratio of the friction force (F)/force pressing the surfaces together (W). So if mass doubles so does the force pressing the surfaces 2F/2W, thus independent of mass.
@youngbleeb Yes, but Fiesta is a better designed car. It has higher quality materials, a dash that has twu full dial gauges, a dual clutch automatic, etc. In other words, it is an example, how a good chasis could make better car or not by designers.
25m to stop from 70mph is definately wrong... way too quick. And theres no way that adding 200kg will increase the stopping distance by over 60%. I think its about time the people who produce these programs actually knew stuff about cars before sprouting rubbish like this without a second thought, its clearly wrong when you'd be lucky to get a car like this to stop from 70mph in 50m.
This is a very common misconception. The work required to stop the car is equal to its kinetic energy before braking. Mass appears on both sides of the equation and it therefore has no in that respect. But you're right about change in mass distribution, both statically and dynamically, and this will change the workload burden between front and rear axles BUT the ABS will attempt to work each wheel broadly up to its friction coefficient. Ergo the result for the whole car will be broadly unaltered
Any word on what engines North America gets? I've been pining for a V8 bigblock in a small chasis like this. But seriously, I like this car and I don't care too much about its lineage as people seem to be bashing the Fiesta for. At face value, it looks like Ford has the better of the two. The shoddy American quality argument hopefully is a thing of the past and will not haunt them going forward. I just don't like the Mazda2's more conservative styles compared to the Fiesta.
You're absolutely right, but if you consider what you've written then increased mass will increase the normal force. Thus aiding deceleration. In reality, the work done to stop it is equal to its Kinetic Energy: 0.5 x m x v^2 = m x (mu x g) x s. Mass appears on both sides of the equation and so it's effects are eliminated. This is a very common misconception and there is a lot of literature on the phenomenon. Very interesting though.
That's nice of you to say. It's shame you didn't see this video because you might have not said something so foolish. notice the size of the gentleman.
5th Gear pulls out all the stops here to make the point that a lighter vehicle is better. Big heavy man, exciting track driving. But it still feels like they gave the road test to a yob in a track suit, and if you need to have it explained (that more weight will slow a car down) then you may not be bright enough to drive. Come on chaps. Give your viewers more credit.
LLCoolPass can't you see people don't want you on youtube? In this video there is no mention of M2 having greater stopping power than the best sports cars. If they are, you can point out in which second without resorting to insults or shouting. I don't mind being proven wrong (unlike some people)...And BTW sequitor is spelled sequitur
hm...41m from 70mph to 0 is actually quite good. BUT 25m as claimed is not possible on normal tarmac and road tires in any car. so he must have been way slower the first time, or hit the brakes way earlier. don´t get why nobody noticed that mistake while doing this show O.o
@youngbleeb Ok, looks like you know a lot about this things. But I read a lot of car reviews and tests and so on and wherever I looked, it said: '' Mazda is a great car, thanks to Ford impressive chassis.'' And I mean, Everywhere. So whats the point of doing that? As I know, Ford owns ''small'' stake at Mazda company so its not logically at all. Are they just naming it like its Fords, because Ford is so huge?
fiesta is ugly in my opinion it has a big ass ford logo which looks bigger than the entire car. the yaris is a good car and toyotas usually do last awhile and the mazda 2 is a good car both cars have great motors and are good gas mpg cars so its really what U want but if it was me id get a 2
70 mph stop in 25 meters.... thats 80 feet. that's also complete bullshit for an economy car with drum brakes to accomplish. there has to be something going on

I have this car and it’s amazing

Very informative, know exactly what to expect from mazda 2
The Car Reviewers loves the Stick on this baby. Best gear action for a Compact Car.
Just bought a spirited green mazda2 yesterday. It's a great little replacement for my ailing Honda Accord.
This car is my favourite ZOOM ZOOm
Mazda!! Japanese technology rules!! I have the grey one.
It's a small city car ( 1.3 or 1.5 litre engine). There's no mention of it being better than any sports car. The dude even says it's not trying to be a hothatch...I think it serves its purpose well. If you are looking for more muscle try Mazda 3 MPS.

Do you still have it? :)
Hello no, sold it in 2011 upgraded to the Mazda3
This also goes to prove that being in shape will make your car perform much better :D
But, the Fiesta is a lot heavier. 5-door hatch: 2537 lbs (1150kg) The Mazda 2 (I don't know if it's 3-door or 5-door) is 2100 lbs (953kg). Nice little car--seems to go well too.
If the Fiesta is coming to the US, this should also! I like it.
White is cool. Looks great in it. With black wheels, maybe 17"...
I seriously doubt it. The braking distance would only have been 82 feet and that would make this car godly.
I hope they bring the 2 to the US. We need more lightweight cars that don't suck to drive. A bit more power and an limited slip would do wonders.
@Cedef36 actually that's the sport version of the mazda 2. not an mps, bun neither a standard one :)
Not sure, only just started advertising it in the UK. Looks like a nice small version of the Mazda 3, wonder if it performance anywhere as near. Seeing Mazda 3 MPS is the fastest, most comftable hot hatch around.
@youngbleeb not only is it Fiesta=Mazda2 but in Canada the Ford Ranger pickup is the same as the Mazda B-Series pickup
That’s a 2010 facelift, and this is a 2008 video, WTF is going on 😳
@Rangeroversport12 the 3 and the focus are the same in other parts of the world as well.
@youngbleeb

@youngbleeb the mazda is based on a ford platform, sorry friend ;)
It’s a Ford Fiesta with a Mazda badge I’ve got a diesel one love it and it was £1000 less than the equivalent fiesta
I sure do love Mazdas and all non-VAG cars....but I would still buy Fiesta Sport as a second car :)
5th February 2008
South America too
@louiearmstrong I should have reworded it. I meant less weight = faster
@youngbleeb
The 2 just looks too...Harmless.
@Digi20
Good point!
this or the jazz/fit?
@youngbleeb my apologize just researched it and its co developed by both ford and mazda, mah bad :3
@youngbleeb Yes, but Fiesta is a better designed car. It has higher quality materials, a dash that has twu full dial gauges, a dual clutch automatic, etc. In other words, it is an example, how a good chasis could make better car or not by designers.

I got a red mazda 2 so its a well car.
Same basic chassis as the Fiesta, yes. But completely different engineering altogether.
yes
@MrTR500 i retract my statement. they share the same platform
cool
This car is in the new car pack for forza 3 tomorrow.
This is a very common misconception. The work required to stop the car is equal to its kinetic energy before braking. lighter is better in everyways
That's nice of you to say.
It's shame you didn't see this video because you might have not said something so foolish. notice the size of the gentleman.
yeah it looks like a yaris.
why would I deserve thumbs down from viewers when I said nothing offense, and actually something very factual and interesting?

I need the last word of the video!
ALSO MAKE IT WHAT>>!>>!>!?!?!?!?

@youngbleeb
Sure, sure, sure...
Less equipment: great.
Move along.
@t3hRevenge No, I am not. I just know the right facts and you clearly don't.

@mrjost55 the big guy is in better shape... STRONGEST MAN... the host is just a light skinny bloke
70 mph stop in 25 meters.... thats 80 feet.
that's also complete bullshit for an economy car with drum brakes to accomplish. there has to be something going on
Lovley little car, cool as a Fiesta?, nope. But still a nice little car, my mum owns one
Reminds me of a Toyota Yaris hahaha or the Nissan Versa ..
cause people actually buy this car and they hate you because you say it is a piece of shit well thats what I think lol
I am looking into buying 2009-10 model for my wife. I noticed most popular are 1.3 engines, but some are 1.5 sport. Which one would you recommend? I was thinking 1.5 , but not sure if the suspension is any different than 1.3 . Are there any other major differences between 1.3 and 1.5 versions?

I got a 1.4 diesel it’s a great little car
200 kilos lighter than its predecessor? That's a ton! Other car makers should follow in Mazda's footsteps.
Paradiddler45 no it's not it's a 5th of a tonne. Haha just joking. I know what you meant and agree fully.
Mazda, bring this car the USA, please!
Again, for the last time, they claim 25 meters from this POS car.
And Porsche 911 turbo, with the upgrade: ceramic composite brakes package, stops in 32 meters.
Do you understand why I am raising the B.S. flag?
what?
I like pies

@youngbleeb
You keep focusing on stupid shit that doesn't matter, yet ignore the fact that the Fiesta is the better car. There's no denying that it comes better equipped, has better fuel economy, has a more powerful engine, and costs less. These aren't opinion; they're facts.
Even if it were manufactured in Mexico (it's not, it's just assembled there), it wouldn't change SHIT. I don't care, nor should anyone. It being made in the USA won't make the car itself any better.
Jazz(Fit) better =)
@Xytos i juts notice that there is a mazda 2 cuz my father says that he is going to sell my mazda 3 for this one! this SUCKS!!!!
10.5 seconds for insurance group 16? swift sport does it in 8.9 for insurance group 9. what gives.
