  • Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a LCD television with a smashed screen.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    I got a tv out of a dumpster, a Magnavox 32 inch. the screen was broken but I kept the parts. My mom brought home a Funai TV from a yard sale, the same TV, turned out the mainboard was bad so I swapped them. Then my nephew was given the same type of TV, struck by lightning, again a Funai, I put the power supply board in his. Fixed two with the junk one. So, keep your parts!!

    Hey Vince. We had a Sharp AQUOS TV and it had a problem that there’s no audio or sound on HDMI 2, among all 3 HDMI inputs and I believe our TV got repaired at our local Sharp Service Center cause there’s a problem with the motherboard of the various inputs (where HDMI, Component, Composite, RF, RGB and USB where placed) cause I charge my phone using my NES Classic Power cord by plug it on the TV’s USB port and i charge it many times. So we bring it to repair and probably the new board they install has a fault with the sound on HDMI 2.

  • @x1ic1x
    @x1ic1x 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    3:00 hey Vince when you were going to unplug the TV I was worried, “oh no, it can possibly have a charge still stored!” Until you turned it on a few times as you explained what I was worried about. If you try this on a PS3 and PS4 after it was plugged in while in the off setting, it will still hold a charge, so it was always important to turn it on and off whilst disconnected to make sure it doesn’t blow anything crucial upon opening.

      It can also help to short out the capacitors to drain them especially on the hot/high voltage side, but do it with something that isolates yourself from any remaining charge like an insulated screwdriver.

      surely the remote wouldn't discharge any capacitors? the tv was plugged out at the mains when he was pressing the remote. would he not have to press the power button on the tv?

    Hi Vince, You inspired me to take a look at a TV that i knocked off it's perch and broke the screen last year. I thought it was scrap until I saw your 'Trying to fix a LCD TV' vid and thought why not have a go at taking it apart and looking on eBay for a replacment screen. Sure enough I found a screen for £49 inc postage which the vendor says is in very good working order. I'm awaiting delivery so I'll repost to let you know the outcome.
    Thanks for the insperation Vince

    Its a shame to see this TV go! it's been with us for many fix it videos.
    The problem with LCD TV's is the screen panel is the most important, most expensive, and most delicate part of the whole thing. It's a shame as the panel simply can't be repaired when it breaks like that.
    One thing you might be able to salvage from that panel is the backlight however, it looks to be encased in the panel. They can make a very neat 12V light source, we've got one lighting up our shed/summer house , it does a good job , it's brighter than you think, the light must loose a lot of strength going through the pixels.
    We were able to repair a TV of ours by replacing the panel, but we got one that had I think one number difference to the model, and it works in the TV but the TV just turns off on its own now and then, the replacement panel we got must have a different power need maybe? So it is important you follow the part number of the panel exactly.
    You were right about the HOT and COLD on the PCB, the hot side is the power supply, which turns 240V into 12 and 5 volt for the cold side. The hot and cold sides are usually on separate PCBs, so you can replace the power supply if it breaks or just the logic board if the HDMI goes or something. Here it's likely combined to save money.
    You are right about the small cable in the side for the backlight, and the large cable being for the picture. The large cable goes into what's called the TCON board I believe, that large PCB that went along the top back of the panel. From what I know is not good to touch or put pressure on the TCON board, especially on the top of it like you did at 6:40 , from what I know theres many small ribbon cables going from the tcon board straight into the panel pixel grid itself, which is very delicate. If you do get a replacement panel , avoid holding it at the top , or which ever side the tcon board is on.

    Thanks Mr. Vince, this one turned out as I suspected. I got a smashed LCD free at a garage sale this summer from a nice lady who told me her husband said it was broken. It's a Vizio 32" D series. As it turns out I got extremely lucky thru a facebook marketplace deal I got a as-is D series panel (missing cables, remote, feet, power cable) and was able to merge parts from both devices into one working solid TV. cleaned up nicely. I use it to test game consoles in my garage workshop. total investment $50 from the FB marketplace find.

    You're correct with the hot and cold Vince, it refers to high and low voltage. I would take the metal shroud off and see if there's a number refering to the panel only is that number seems to only refer to that model TV, try ebay and aliexpress.

    Be careful Vince if you do buy another panel... Different revisions of the same panel can sometimes need different firmware to operate correctly. In fact some panels from different manufacturers are electrically compatible but won't work for the same reason. The Vestel TVs (of which this isn't one) in particular are notorious for using multiple panel types on the same model of TV.
    I agree about just buying a Samsung instead though... This is a generic Chinese set and really you've done well to get several years out of it.

    I was just thinking to myself that it has been a while since I saw a new MMV video...and here we are. :D
    As far as fixing flatscreen TVs goes, my general rule is if the LCD panel is still good and the backlight works, then I will try to fix - usually bad caps or I do a board swap. If bad LCD I strip components and boards and sell on ebay, then bin the rest like the bad panel, plastic bezel/stand, etc.

  • @TheCod3r
    @TheCod3r 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do this regularly Vince, and you will be better off going on Facebook and finding a TV where the screen works but board has gone. But for reference that panel splits into about 5 different parts, you have the metal back panel, then you have a reflector panel, then an led array for backlight, then between 2 and 4 light diffuser panels, then the actual LCD screen, then the bezel to hold it all together. Dont scrap it, keep it to one side and look for a 22" TV on Facebook, you'll pick one up these days for about £25

  • @Amraks
    @Amraks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Always get people asking me to fix these TVs I always tell them the screen is worth more than the tv as that is the truth, sometimes I get the "yes it is repairable" back chat. So I just leave them in their naive state of mind.

I also got a chuckled 32 inch sharp only buttons on top needed glueingin place it works fine just no stand my 2 Sony Trinitron CRT 21 inch sets were also thrown away but they were fine both with superb tubes and fine for retro gaming.

    Hello Vincent, I just checked the panel and here is the info: 1920x1080, 60 Hz TN panel with LED backlight. The backlight operates at 39.2 V (min) to 47.6 V (max). You can buy any panel of another brand with similar specs. Just make sure the resolution, refresh rate and backlight voltage matches with that of the existing one and also the position of the LVDS connector. I have swapped numerous laptop and monitor screens this way and they have worked every single time. Sometimes, upgrading is also possible. You can look for LG panels which have better colors than ChiMei Innolux (Optoelectronics). Do feel free to get in touch with me for any help you need.

    There was a video released just now where someone turned the backlight and the diffusor panels of a tv into a daylight panel/lamp. Maybe that would be a nice project to not let the TV go to total waste. At least some parts could be salvaged and turned into something useful. That panel, hung up on a wall, very convincingly looked like an open window on a sunny day.

    Yeah... I found it on eBay several times within a few minutes... as well as other sites. Try searching the model number of the TV on the back rather than the exact panel. A lot of people sell them with bad listings. Also if the listings I’ve found are no longer available then simply look for logik 22” Panel or Logik LCD 22” and you may find one with the same pin out. Generally if you get a logik TV panel that’s the same size and pins are the same and same location then it will work regardless, also if that fails use PanelLook and AlliExpress generally will have the panels for you. Although I will say that there is always someone selling a 22” TV or small tv such as this on Facebook marketplace for around £30-40 so it might be easier just to do that

    From experoence, it is rarely useful to try and get replacement panel for TVs, as they end up being about 80% of the cost of the actual TV, so it is often a better idea to just get a new TV. You can definitely sell all the other parts, like the boards or the frame for some profit, as those pieces are actually worth repairing.

    A smashed screen is the only problem that makes inconvenient to fix the TV.
    When the screen is smashed, boom, game over.
    If you want to "repair it" at all costs , you might want to buy the very same TV , better if used, and then you'll have a working TV and a replacement logic board for future use.

    Hi HOT AND COLD IS secondary and primary please do not touch where the big reservoir capacitor or capacitors are they hold in excess of 400volt it’s enough to stop your heart so be careful holding or touching around the hot side, even if the board was unplugged after being turned on they can hold the charge for ages
    And the screen of a tv is approx 89% of the cost of a tv so don’t be fooled by people selling a damaged tv saying
    “screen broken cheap to fix quoted £60 I’m too busy to get it fixed “

    Vince I was going to suggest if your other tv that has the same remote is the same size pop the back off look at the board and Model number and see if you could find that one instead . You may find a local tv repair shop can get the panel or may even have the same tv with a blown power board that you could have the screen from. Done a lot of repair works on LCD and led tv's and there was a seller online who had a fairly big catalogue of older and off brand spares I used . If I can find any of my old invoices I can let you know who they are .

    So I've got this tablet. The screen got cracked and I ordered the new screen plus the digitizer, and when I tried to put it back together, the LCD display panel underneath the outer layer broke. It cracked! Much to my surprise too because I've taken this damn thing apart a dozen or more times and it never broke until I tried to replace the damn digitizer and screen part, and the display never got broken. I can't exactly replace the part as I can't find one much like you in this case here. So I need to find a new part to connect it to temporarily just to obtain stuff that's on the tablet. Any ideas on where I can get something that I can connect the board of the tablet too so I can access it???

    I dont think the ir sensor gets idle power when unplugged, so what I do it click the manual onr and off button on the tv or radio or whatever to defuse. But I did build a bread board that has many resisters in a chain with aligator clips and I put them onto a large baring capacitor to drain them sometimes it burns up a resistor but there relletivly cheap and easily replaced. You could try that if youd like.

    If it had been held from the back with your hands in a U shape and only a little bit of pressure on the front it might not have broken (that's how i picked up my mom's TV to move it away from the wall and lift up on one side so i could hook up the A/V cables to it [the cables had to go in the bottom of the TV] and that's also how i carry my PC's 19 inch monitor too)

    Hi! I saw in some of your Nintendo Switch videos that when you used the hot air station, you masked the components around the part you wanted to heat up with a yellow semi-transparent adhesive band. I need to replace some band in my phone that looks exactly the same, but I couldn't find out what that type of band is called. Could you please tell me what band is that?

    Yes you can replace panels. You simply are doing it wrong. I even replaced the panel in my laptop with a better panel than what was stock. If you match the dimensions and the connector PIN counts you may even be able to upgrade the panel.

    Oh well, it happens Vince. Just don't do that next time, and hold it by the bezels whenever you move the TV around, or any VDU/TV (visual display unit/television) for that matter.

    usually, if not a simple board repair, or dead leds it is not worth repairing a TV... if it is the screen, your are busted, unless you are lucky to find the same screen on a repair shop that had the same kind of TV with a dead board...

    Hot side is where AC goes and Cold Side is DC. AC gets converted to DC on the hot side. this is one of the problems with TVs, finding the screens for them is only do-able if someone has parted one out if not then you cant get the screens for them. i dont see any point in bothering with repairing a TV or a Computer monitor when it comes to the Screen itself if its the Power supply then yes try and fix it but its the Main board then i wouldn't even bother. the industry for repairing a lot of these new TVs are dead cheaper to throw away than repair, welcome to this throw away generation

    The problem is not the panel, it's the connector or the top board of the panel, try to connect the motherboard again and the power, turn on and press on the top of the panel and see what happens. There are a lot of videos about how to fix these kinds of problems with the displays. Also, check the pins of the connector. Maybe it's the cable of the screen, and you can find a replacement on eBay.

    panels cost more than a new tv so i don't know why you would do that.
    you get no warranty on a new panel. laptop screens are widely available
    and pretty cheap so if you do it you slip under the radar. a company would
    have had to add price for warranty etc.
