Toro Grand Stand MultiForce Debrief ► Day In The Life Lawn Care Vlog ► Mowing Tall Grass

  • So after putting about 5-6 hours on our Toro Grand Stand Multi-Force demo, it was time to turn her in and report back to you guys. I will say, it was a fun experience trying out the Toro Grand Stand, but I have mixed feelings on the unit.
    Overall it was a decent mower, but there were a handful of things I didn't like. Outside of that, I feel that when you try to do so many things at once, you end up not really doing one thing exceptional. This rang true when using the unit as a dedicated mower.
    I went over a few things I liked, a few things I didn't, but towards the later half of the day, we did some mowing tall grass tests. This was a challenge Stan did against the Husqvarna 554. I will say this, the Toro did NOT cut any better than that 554.
    In fact, I was quite surprised and, a little disappointed. Truthfully, that was kind of the story of the day with the Toro. Tons of hype from a lot of you guys but, there were a few things that stuck out to me like a sore-thumb.
    Now all things being equal, it did mow just fine on my residential properties (just like the Husky). But the mower seemed a little lack luster. I think it's going to have it's strength with it's expandable capabilities, but when it comes to just being a mower, it just wasn't very overwhelming.
    Love to hear your guys' thoughts on the Grand Stand Multi-Force. What do you guys think about the unit? Leave me a comment down below!

    Thanks Brian, I see a couple of short comings on this mower, The deck is independent from the engine (belt alignment) The platform is behind the wheels rather than between (center of gravity for traction), and the wheel issues you have pointed out. It looks like the cut is excellent though....

    Looks like a great mower man. Nice to hear the throttle back before kicking on the PTO that not a lot of other guys around me do, to the misery of their belts (and they make sure you can hear it lol) I would definitely like to see some of the other attachments they have as I think it could end up being a very versatile machine.

      Growing up on a farm I was taught to always engage the PTO at a low rpm. Less shock to the parts, equipment will last much longer.

    The broom you could us during the Winter snow removal on your big sidewalks, cleans better than a plow, duel purpose. Just giving it the additional props where it is deserved. The Ferris cuts better. The Wright is better on slops and softer ground.

    I ran Toro Grandstands for 5 yrs....until I tried the SRSZ2. Tried the new gen Grandstand, and SRSZ2. Like you said the hydraulics on that mower are stiff, compared to the silky smooth ferris. It cut cleaner through Johnson grass without double cutting also.
    It seems like it’s a more stable solid mower compared to the modified walk behindish Grandstand.
    It also costed me a lot less than the high priced Grandstand. $15,000 out the door for 2 on Ferris, versus $17,000 plus tax for 2 on Toro.

    Hello, Brian another great video!!! Look I am a BIG Exmark fan and I heard a LOT of good rumors about the new Vantage coming in the fall, so I am excited about that. The toro has the attachments so that is a really good selling point. However, I do not know how much they cost. One point though I like your Ferris Cap !!! LoL Keep up with the good job Brian and Thanks a lot

    I think the exspandability of the Toro is awesome and the other manufacturers will copy eventually. But that whole curb inability business is a dealbreaker for some. Would love to see you try out the plow on some wet heavy snow. All the vids I've seen so for are of nice light powder. Just get the Ferris. You know you want it. Thanks for another good review.

    LMAO, my admin watched your video because we just ordered a multiforce for the winter and she didn't understand what the unit was. She jumped on line and went to watch a couple of videos and stated to me, " did you see that guys video when he tried to jump a curb with the mower deck down", yep, i re-review and it was down the WHOLE time. Like I stated before, thanks for the great laugh!

      Bro pick the deck up ....it hurts my ears to hear you grinding on that curb! All you have to do is go backwards and bump the curb just a tiny bit and you hop right over every time. Also, to judge cut quality on pasture grass more suited for a bush hog is not super helpful. Its like saying "this screwdriver doesn't make a very good hammer". Congrats to Ferris for being a better bush hog, we cut lawns.

    I have a Toro Z-master 3000 and can relate to the hand control stiffness. I had to move the dampers to the softest/least resistance setting as it was wearing my hands out after 2-3 acres of large lot mowing. Something that helps on cutting high grass is to adjust the deck baffle. Did you have it opened all the way? Not getting over a curb would be a pain. Great unbiased review! Thanks!

    Thanks so much for the review on the Toro! Probably not the mower for me either. I used to run a Toro Z Master zero turn that I liked pretty well. Currently running a couple of Gravely Pro Stance 52's with original X Factor deck. Not too impressed with the cut quality. Hoping you do a demo of the 2018 Gravely Pro Stance with the X Factor 2 deck. I heard the cut quality was improved. I'm liking the scag V ride 2 and the ferris so far. Stay hydrated!

    Brian, I think that this mower makes for a good second mower for a lawn care company (I.E.-when the main mower is in the shop, when your first mower is a zero-turn & it is still a little bit soft outside for the weight of a zero-turn, the attachment items are needed to handle a job, etc.).

    I am new to your site and have 30 years commercial experience. I have run the Exmark, Toro Z riding mowers as well as grandstands. The Toro deck seems to do better in wet grass and the striping is better if the discharge is not wide open. In St Louis people seem to run more Exmark.

    Love the video. It must be nice to be able to demo the best. I purchased a multiforce nov. 2019. We wanted it for snow. With the blade. Got the 52" inch deck. Long story about the engine. It somehow got water in the oil. So it would run like crap. Last 2 snowfalls we used it for it worked great. Not sure what the issue is. Its at the dealer now. They were to talk to kohler and we all thought it best that they have the machine there for reference. Have you known anyone to run it in cold weather? Have you heard of any engine issues? We work at some pretty chilly temps.

    • @TheKevfromcanada
      @TheKevfromcanada 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve had two cold weather issues. The breather hose into the fuel pump ices up, and there’s a three prong electrical connection on the front of the engine, moisture gets in there and corrodes the pins, causing the battery to not recharge properly during use in Edmonton winters. Both can be fixed with a little ingenuity, but are really annoying when coming from an engineering department as big as toro.

    I use a toro multiforce as my main mower. It stripes very well for not having any rollers like the scab has. As far as jumping curbs 1) you have to raise the deck all the way up before trying to jump a curb. I do feel the wheels could be bigger. 2) in your tall grass test you went way faster with toro than you did with the other mowers that you have done it on. So it was not an equal, true test. I would also like to see you take the exmark through the tall grass.

      @BriansLawnMaintenance  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We went slow and fast. It wasn’t doing any justice going any slower. The grass was bent over. Just like the Husqvarna. And the deck was raised all the way up and in the locked position. No way was that my fault. The mowers wheels are just flat out too small. Both front and back.

    Sounded like the motor wasnt running exactly perfect to me ??? It was dogging on that little easy cutting grass ?at least in the beginning, it seemed to run better after he mowed a few rounds ? My question is how high will the deck go to load on a trailer ? Im a 6 inch minimum in as high as i can go , transport deck mode ????

    I use a 48 in grandstand everyday at work.
    Pros- Leaves nice stripes. Controls are simple. Fairly quick and agile.
    Cons- Handle controls are too small/narrow. My hand slips off turning around doing y turns and they are hard to keep straight on bumpy lawns in order to leave straight lines. You have to go slower than you should need to. Too light/center of gravity. Going up steep hills the front end comes off the ground. Good luck on wet hills or slopes cause that baby is gonna slide. Oh you also bounce up and down a lot on bumpy lawns

    Machine looks pretty cool , was disappointed at the quality of the cut going through tall grass, I have a 30 acre property, which consists of slope and bit of flat areas, I do have small rocks coming up through ground, I ended up purchasing a AS Motor 901 flai walk behind, yes it is a pain in the butt walking behind but the cut quality going through tall grass is very good and not to mention going through thick brush is a breeze, also it's slow but I'm yet to find something that could handle the terrain of my property, awesome video very informative, keep up the good work👍👍

    When going up and down the curb hop off the machine and just so you know the turbo force is the same deck as the ultra cut just the turbo force has a adjustable bafgle so your exmark wouldn’t cut the same as that maybe worse due to not haveing that baffle

    Most units now days are made generally around the same quality, each manufacturer has its claim to fame for its most durable design of certain parts however at the end of the day it’s mostly about maintaining your equipment. Any unit one buys new and maintains according to manufacturers specifications should last a decent amount of hours. The problem is most people do not understand what actually taking care of a unit is. Once we switched from cast iron cylinders to aluminum it is very vital to run clean fuel, always change your air filters to prevent dirt ingestion, and change the oil once it looses its viscosity. If you do all of the above you should get long life out of any mower. Best recommendation for what to buy is not about what cuts best or whatever, pick a brand that you have a Reliable dealer that is conveniently near you, that’s the most vital part. That’s why John Deere sucks, equipment quality is normal, however getting parts can be a nightmare even on newer equipment. Also honestly I think cut quality is partially a marketing scam, I have a Toro from 1998 and a snapper from 1965 and they both cut as good as any of my zero turns or walk behinds I own. 😀 good luck picking!

    we have eleven stand on mowers, ten are Toro Grandstands. weak link is the front forks are weak. We do a lot of medians and getting on-off curbs with traffic buzzing by you, the forks get bent at the lower bearing from impacting the curb. If the forks were wider the new tweel tire in the front may absorb a lot of the impact!

      Im a small engine repair mechanic who works at a shop and we also sell toro among other brands. I will tell you from experience i see fewer toro mowers coming in for repairs than anything. Mostly john deere and walker stuff for major repairs. Also Dixie and off brand stuff seems to come in a lot. Don't see ferris here and the few scags around don't come into our shop if theyre breaking down. Exmark and Toro mostly for routine maintenance and wear parts. Also ill say we don't see a lot of stander mowers yet. most crews are still runings sit downs and walk behinds. Only a very small fraction running stand ons. It will be interesting to see if its a fad or if they actually stick around for the long haul. Say 10-15 years from now. Looks awfully uncomfortable to run all day vs sitting.

    • @ErikAsquith
      @ErikAsquith 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Palmer Marcus how does slowing the blade rotation help with lift, cut, and throw on heavy wet grass?

    • @pementerprises7706
      @pementerprises7706 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it reduces deck build up/deck packing, which is the reason mowers clump in the first place as when the blades hit the built up grass on the front baffle it knocks it off and throws it, which is the clump seen in the yard, and lowing the rpms by 200-300 will not make a noticeable difference in the throw or cut of the mower if you do not go really fast. This is why most people say tightly baffled decks clump a lot vs open ones as they have a lot less room to work with when it starts to build up.

    • @ErikAsquith
      @ErikAsquith 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Palmer Marcus interesting and that does seem logical. Thanks for the feedback.
