We had too much sun on exposed trunks in drought years. I realised I needed to let it grow out lower to provide shade. Its taken a few years but the trees are looking so much better. Keeping it short and bushy in hot and windy climate. Tried, tested and true. Great advice ,thanks from Cape Town.

Excellent video. You actually show where to cut and answer questions that might come up. Very important because when I’ve seen other videos they leave the important photo, they just cut.🤷‍♀️ they need to show more because not everyone knows about plants . I bought my first Myers lemon tree, looks healthy but one branch is like two feet long. I used old pantyhose to support it from the pole. I was afraid to cut the branch. It’s end of June in NC and in the nineties. There were four little lemons , small like drops but went from yellow to brown to black. Maybe because it’s young🤷‍♀️ the tree and leaves are healthy looking. SO FAR🧐😟I’m growing the lemon tree in a pot and will bring into house in the Fall.

Just geting into gardening. Just bought my new home. If I buy some of your white wash and I mix it together how long can I keep it in the can before it goes badd. Once it is mix does it have to be used right away or will it last 6 months a year because I don't know if I would need that much whitewash at 1 time.

Love your videos! Very informative. I have a variegated dwarf Eureka lemon tree. Last time I saw fruit on it was 15 years ago when I first bought it. Produces beautiful flowers, healthy leaves, and when the babies form, they fall off. I think I will shovel prune it and will restart. Question: what is the max size citrus I can grow in 25 gal pots? I have 80 roses in 25 gal pots and they are happy, but I understand you prefer terracotta pots for citrus. So, terracotta or plastic and 25 gal. What can I comfortably grow? I am in the hottest part (West) of the San Fernando Valley; right now it is 104-107 degrees these couple of days. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

HI, my lemon tree produces amazingly. The only problem is the shape has gone unmanageable. The branches grow outward and droop down. I think they are going to break from the weight of all the lemons. I believe my gardener hasn't properly trimmed them and this is just the form they have taken long thin outward droopy branches. should I cut them while they are full of fruit? They are a safety hazard as they droop onto the walkway. Or should I tie them up?

Hello Charles! I was one of those asking for the kumquat tree update, so thanks for taking into consideration! :)
As my Nagami started sending new shoots recently, I sort of had an epiphany. Branch pruning is almost always done after the branches have already developed to a significant size. And by cutting it, all that time and energy spent on that growth is kind of wasted. Instead of this method, what if we do a so-called "preemptive pruning" in which you try to predict and imagine how the growth of a new shoot will be and snap the unwanted shoots that are still very tender. You can even balance a tree with unbalanced canopy by removing new shoots to stop it from further unbalancing and leaving those on the other side. This I suppose will minimize the energy waste and result in a faster growth overall. What are you thoughts about that?

      Hello Anario,
I've been thinking when I was going to have the time to respond to all the comments to get to the last time you wrote me seeking this request... yes, this demo with the kumquat was intended for you! :-)
And you are correct, you should always be anticipating and strategizing the goal with your tree shape, design & size. That is the 1st tip of advise on a video we are close to releasing later today.... Let me know if you have any other questions! Charles :-)

I am a newbie and just found your video. I live in Central FL. I have a grapefruit tree that is very mature. I don’t know how many years old it is. I have lived here for 4 years. I haven’t done anything with it except for enjoying the fruit.
    1) I used to have a blood orange tree next to it but was taken out by hurricane Irma 4 yrs ago. Do I need to put in another fruit, citrus tree next to it for cross pollination?
    2) My grapefruit tree is way too tall for me to prune the top. How do I find a reputable citrus tree trimmer, pruner, that is also knowledgeable about diseases or anything else that might be wrong with my tree?
    3) So if I understand you right, I shouldn’t really do anything, pruning or shaping the tree until after all the fruit is harvested and after last frost. But how much time before the first frost can I prune my tree? I have a lot of small green fruit on it right now.
    4) Before watching your video, I was going to prune the low branches that keep hitting my head as I walk by the tree. But I guess those are the branches to keep. My tree is in my side/back yard.
4a) Is there a way to shape an old tree in a way that the lower branches bend closer to the trunk than out maybe 10 ft from the trunk, so I won’t keep hitting my head. I’m afraid some day I will poke my eye with a branch.
4b) What kind of, sorry that I can’t think of the right terminology right now, bed or circular area below tree, should I have. Right now I have grass growing all the way to the trunk. Should it be rock, mulch, etc? How big should the bed be?
    5) I’m confused about where you pruned branches that weren’t at a fork. I remember you saying that if you prune after a certain place the branch will grow one direction and visa versa. Is that cut straight across with the leave right before the cut facing outward from the trunk? Am I supposed to put the IV 3 in 1 or the other IV product on the freshly cut part of the branch?
Thanks so much for your video. I learned so much.

Hi Charles, Thanks for all your videos! I was wondering why you bought this Eureka as standard if you want to keep it at the height of a semi-dwarf. Is there any particular reason or is it just what was available?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good morning Bruno Kieffer,
Great question! I always err on the side of the larger size tree because I like to manage the 'vigor.' For example, when people are seeking a variety fruit tree for a pot, I would typically recommend a semi-dwarf as it will generally grow 2-3 feet per year, compared to a dwarf that will (generally, depending on type of fruit) only grow a few inches per year. I have a semi-dwarf Eureka in my backyard that I've managed to grow in a 'bush shape'.... the standard has the 'tree-shape' and double the vigor (which again, I enjoy training). I hope this makes sense?! Checkout this video featuring my semi-dwarf Eureka: th-cam.com/video/5AbC02ij2gY/w-d-xo.html (6:55)
Let me know if you have any other questions.... Charles :-)

Hey Charles, I've picked up Satsuma, Improved Meyer, a Mango and Carambola trees for this year. I'll have to keep them in containers because of the cold here in Alabama. What kind of containers would you suggest for these trees? Thanks....

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Greg Heal,
It depends on the rootstocks those varieties have been grafted on.... If a dwarf, you can go with a smaller pot... If standard, you must give them the room to grow in a larger container. The minimum (for dwarf) should be 5 gallon... but 10-15 gallons would be better for your dwarf and semi-dwarf trees. You also need to factor the weight and manageability of the pot sizes... 10 is doable, by 15 too heavy, then stick to 10 gallons. Do what is safest for you in managing them from year to year. I hope this helps! Charles :-)

Can't relate to this video because my inherited Lemon Tree is 6' tall max and very bushy to the base....like I have seen on other Lemon Tree video's and are accessible to the fruit which I like. I live in the dessert and and yet thrives. I prune the dead branches and the ones that go beyond the bush. Not sure if different species of Lemon Tree....?

Charles, love your videos mate. Very informative and helpful. If I may suggest, I think it would be greatly helpful for your international viewers if you mentioned the season name instead of month. I am from Australia and as you may know, our climate is totally opposite to the most of the world. End of January is full summer for us for example. So I guess I get a bit confused sometimes to follow your advice. :)

Also summer means 45 degree Celsius in Gulf countries that is from may till sep/ Oct. And winter/ spring means 12/15 to 20/25 degree Celsius thats from Oct to apr. So I guess mentioning temperature will be good. ):

Greetings from the Caucasus, namely from Georgia. I have a citrus garden, 1000 mandarin trees, oranges and some lemons. of different ages. I have such a question, those roots that bear fruit, almost do not bear fruit in the second year, especially mandarin. What could be missing causing this problem?? Your opinion is interesting. thanks. good luck.

Hello 👋 Alternate bearing is common among many varieties of fruit trees- and typically a fruiting year is followed by a vegetative year. Lessening (thinning) the load on a fruiting year, plus a fertilization schedule, may help to keep consistent yields. Here’s a helpful university article on the topic: ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=9257
Keep me posted on your growing successes!

Hello Charles. I have a Nagami kumquat and some of its branches were underdeveloped. I pruned some of these branches right before the new flush of growth. Now other branches are quite dark green and well developed while the new leaves that came out of these underdeveloped braches are small, light in colour and by the looks of it have Mn/Fe/Zn deficiency. These shoots also started late.
What might be the issue here and how should my approach be?

I thought something was wrong with my lemon trees when i brought them inside for the winter and after repotting them and root trimming...they were dormant for a couple months...then the "biggest" leaves ever started growing on them and now they appear to be "bolting"?? What is happening? No fertilizer. Just home made organic compost...and chicken poop

People, Don't prune your citrus tree.
    0:33
There is a reason lots of research says not to prune your citrus trees.
I have seen the consequences of what pruning a citrus tree does, on my mother's 2 citrus trees that were pruned from the previous property owner.
These 2 trees bare large worthless fruit that are deformed and extremely bitter. Every year. It's such a waste.
I would rather have a citrus tree growing naturally branched with good edible fruit rather than a nicely shaped pruned tree.
She has planted other citrus trees unpruned and they produce loads of fruit naturally.
