My father, the foundation of our family, just passed away two days ago. This is the first video that came right in front of me, and it hit me hard, but in a good sense. I grew up listening to Stratovarius with my brother, and listening to it now brought back so many good memories about our dad. So thanks a lot, guys. Everything happens for a reason.
Sorry about your loss. My father recently passed away on New Year's Eve. Back in 2005, there was a lot of turmoil and uncertainty in Stratovarius, so when they announced a North American tour I knew I had to see them. My dad and I took a road trip to Anaheim, California to see them. Looking back, I'm so glad we took that trip, because it's an extra special memory now that he's gone!!! Best Regards.
Stratovarius is one of my favorite bands of all time. I am glad you reacted ro this. They write about life, the meaning of it, emotions, relationships, even theistic gnostic and esoteric themes as well. You can call them a "clean" band, lyrically speaking. Musically they are pioneers in the genre, and a reference to the Power Metal genre as well. They have two phases: First phase is up to the Fourth Dimension. They carried their first line up until that album. Also this is the first album where guitar player and singer, Timo Tolkki, left the mic to Timo Kotipelto, who is their singer until this day. That phase, had a darker, introspective rheme. First three albums and some parts of Fourth Dimension (like the closer Twilight Symphony, for example). The second phase had the very well known keyboard genius Jens Johansson, replacing Anti Ikkonen, which you instantly notice the change of tone and theme. Johansson and Tolkki emulated the well recognized solo duels from the Malmsteen school, which Johansson joined back in the day. Tolkki is not in the band anymore, due to several reasons, but the band carries on the theme and spirit, although their sound change a little. Anyway, you have a lot to explore within this band. I hope you enjoy it as i have been doing for almost 22 years. Cheers.
Well written! I always prefered the darker era, but I also love the 1996-2001 albums aswell.. But my favorite will always be Dreamspace (1994). It just has a certain atmosphere. The last time Tolkki used his crazy vocals.

YES! Stratovarius! I think I've been babbling on about them in these chats and comments for awhile. I've been meaning to Patreon instead of lurk, so I'll fix that soon :) But this is an all-time favorite band. One of the best live shows I've seen.
Also a great band is Cain's Offering which features both the singer from Stratovarius and the guitarist from Sonata Arctica. They have an album called Stormcrow that has a lot of good stuff on it, including the title track and the Nightwish-like Antemortum. That one will get your head banging for sure. :) I like Stratovarius' faster songs more than this one, but it was ok. Eagleheart is a good one from them as well as Black Diamond and Hunting High and Low
One thing about Finland, that country has excellent bands from there with Stratovarius & Nightwish. Stratovarius is a play on words of Stradivarius (famous violin) & Stratocaster ( guitar).

I agree with those saying you need to react to something from Visions era. either Black Diamond, Kiss of Judas, even Paradise an environmental song woulb se something different here. But songs like Cold Winter Nights, or even some from their most recent works like "If the story is over" would be nice as well. This Change of Season made me remember a bit the lirycs from If the Story is Over.
Hunting High and Low is my favourite song by them, one of their better ones, though Black Diamond is probably the best known - should do either of those 2.

This was a fun one. I’d describe the song as pleasant. I normally don’t listen to metal like this often but I’d give these guys another shot. Really enjoyed the fact that it wasn’t over the top as some power metal can be. I’m going to second the suggestion to check out the new Devin Townsend song. It’s called Genesis. I’d be curious how you’d respond to that one
Timmo is a great singer, and Stratovarius despite all the drama in the band, was actually a really solid power metal act. I liked their older faster stuff alot (Speed of Light, Dreamspace etc). and I thought this was not a great song choice if I am being honest. But fair play, it seemed to do the job as you guys clearly enjoyed it. The last minute and a half to two minutes of this song is great though. I just think it takes to long to get there. 7.5/10 for me. I can't wait for Neil's review! Lyrically speaking, Stratovarius is much more light hearted and optimistic than the other band in question. But it is funny how this pick, Neil's pick and the next patron pick line up thematically.
Stratovarius is a very positive band (not as much as Freedom Call, but then again...), you should check out "Darkest Hours", "Dragons" or "Fantasy" for some of the most positive and awesome songs in power metal.
