    I had a dream like this. I was running uphill in waist-deep snow and there were abnormally large black wolves chasing me. Three of them. The trees were black and lifeless. There were no leaves and the sky was overcast. Off in the distance behind me there was a pale woman with long dark hair woman wearing a black hood. Just as the wolves were closing in and I was getting tired I turned to look at her and she raised her hand and the wolves didn't rip me to shreds, as if she were controlling them.

    "When people see some things as beautiful,
    other things become ugly.
    When people see things as good,
    other things become bad.
    Being and non-being create each other,
    Difficult and easy support each other.
    Long and short define each other,
    High and low depend on each other.
    Before and after follow each other.
    Therefore the Master acts
    without doing anything
    and teaches without saying anything.
    Things arise and she lets them come
    Things disappear and she lets them go."

    No one Nordic band or solo artist is a holy entity onto themselves,- not Wardruna, not Eivør, not Tyr, not Nightwish, not Amon Amarth, not Skáld, not Dimmu Borgir, - nobody,- they do not hold copyrights to the ancestry and heritage of an entire region of about six different countries and the common culture traits these countries share,- nor the right to artistic expression of that ancestry and that culture in solely their way,- not even if there are similarities in the various chosen forms of that artistic expression...!
    I´m a Scandinavian metalhead and the bond and lineage to this modern day expression af ancient themes is direct and not even under discussion,- this is as metal as it gets and not one distorted guitar in sight,- awesome!
    Kati Ran...... thank you!

    • @MartinDambachsueffisant
      @MartinDambachsueffisant 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they are worthy followers of that ancient tradition, there is no such things as "owner of tradition" tradition is performed, is done, is practiced, is song, or just will die. When tradition has died, copyright is useless, and revival is very difficult. I do not fully understand your post. tradition also cannot be performed as a heritage in a untouched way. time has gone and the artist from today are totaly free to take the known parts of past and add their ingredients to it. Maybe we do not disagree. but I want to emphasize: there is no copyright on tradition. "copyright" is a capitalistic 20th century issue, isnt' it ?

    • @DaveHoskinsCG
      @DaveHoskinsCG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW Kati is from the Netherlands, she's not Scandinavian.

    • @ulfdanielsen6009
      @ulfdanielsen6009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Being a Scandinavian artist, actor and metal guitarist myself my post is in part a reaction to a trend- also among ourselves- about doing things the " right" or the " wrong" way.
      There are different styles,- and different ways of interpreting the same foundation,- no " correct" single way,- so calling various artists for for instance " Wardruna Copycats" etc. for expressing themselves in the same style and genre of music as perhaps a more well known outfit than yourself is kind of ridiculous,- yet this has been said of Kati,- and other also Scandinavian artists,- even as late as in this comment section!
      The entire Norse Pagan, Vikingr, Ancient Folk scene is a construct in itself,- NOBODY,- knows what the actual music sounded like as the earliest written musical snippets we have are from the Middle Ages ( "Drømte mig en drøm i nat") ca. mid century of the 1200rds.,- some two hundred years after the Vikingr period ended.
      Personally I consider the entire region of Iceland and the Faroe Islands in the west over Scandinavia and Finland down over The Baltics and northern Poland, over Friesland in North Germany, over The Benelux and finally over the Netherlands as the northern region of Europe, and though not Scandinavian this entire region was in close contact with the original Scandinavnians and their cultures intermingled with the Scandinavian cultures,- so to my mind anybody from this region could actually with some sense express themselves in the "Norse Pagan / Vikingr " modern day folk style and not have to worry about whether or not they were doing it in the " right" or "wrong" way,- so yes, basically, we are in agreement.

    Nearly every day I listen to L.E.A.F.'s album LYS. The wonderful arrangements of traditionals from the North and the beautiful new material accompany me through my working hours and fill our house.
    Though the old North-Finnish rite "Suurin" has not yet empowered me to physically change form, the track has many times abducted my conciousness to where my mind and soul feel at home.
    And now, Kati has provided a scenery to fit that destination. This breathtaking visual work of art offers a mesmerizing representation of the meaning of the lyrics.
    I am very impressed, captivated and felt obliged to share it everywhere I could.

      I can't see woman spelling this kind off words, this song belongs to men. It's very logical for wolf to eat at summertime, because lambs are kept inside at wintertimes. This is what this song tells. Wolf's blood is on top of the bear's blood, so bear dies before wolf dies and wolf is the greatest. And she really sings: "Men of the greatest wolf". I can't see woman spelling this kind of things with blood over bear and eating at summertime...This is spring song although and men are hungry and maby a bit going to war with power of wulf. Very ancient anyway. And yep, men use to do singings and spellings also together here in Finland. Vaka, Vanha Väinämöinen is quite hilarious anyway 🙂👍🇫🇮

      I've learned that this is a spell when somebody wants to take over the certain situation or place. Everything to hunt for food to taking battles, but believe the most known one from the Finnish archives is when the bride would cast this spell to take the power in house while keeping left foot over the main threshold and looking at the sealing. It is for everybody to cast the spell. Damn, I'll do it now to take the power over youtube commercials! :D

    I dont know what it is but every language from Scandinavia just sounds magical. Ancient. Wise. The instruments used by traditional musicians playing this kind of music are very powerful as well. I'm from the Netherlands myself and alot of the pronunciations sound the same as Dutch. And although I usually listen to any kind of traditional music, the stuff you guys make up there in the far north keeps mesmerizing me.

    As Finnish person, I could not understand a word she said. Or sang.
    I read the lyrics, and yes I understand them.
    Though susi (wolf) is spelled weird, suusi, with two letter U's, which makes it sound more like muusi (mash), like perunamuusi (mashed potatoes).
    The song works lot better if you pronounce the lyrics more like kalevala poem, and ignore the typo's. (which I expect they are typos since I've never heard about SUUSI in ANY finnish dialect [then again I might be wrong, lots of different dialects in Finnish language.])
    The suveks, might be a dialect, and finnish person can undertand what it means, in official way it would be spelled sudeksi, where I come from, we say sureks. Mostly finns would say sudeks, becouse it's a bit shorter than sudeksi... anyway that is not important...
    Also there are typos in the translation, I'm a beat on the heath... ?
    I'm a bear on the ... heath?... I don't even know what that means, but what I do know is that Kankahalla means a Finnish forest, special type of forest, kangasmetsä we call it in Finnish:
    kangas
    [ˈkɑŋːɑs]
    metsämaa jonka kivennäisaine on kangashumuksen peittämä kuiva mäntymetsä. esim. Kuiva kangas. Samota kankaita. Kuvaannollinen (arkikieltä) esim. Ajaa jku kankaalle ulos, pois, "pellolle". Taju kankaalla tajuttomana, tiedottomana.
    I don't even expect anyone non-finnish to understand what that means, and anyone not interested in trying to comprehend this and the Finnish language -> this foe is beyond you, flee now....
    Really my humble point is, to a Finnish person, this song sounds very silly, especially with the accompanied video.
    I bet my left lung, that some Finnish mistake this for Estonian language, and some Estonians could mistake this for Finnish.
    I know that Finnish is very hard language and I understand that it is not a common language or very useful in the modern world that we live in, but I do feel respected every time I hear someone even try to learn it, not to mention write a song in Finnish. And as said it is not a easy language to learn so be free and brave to do mistakes, Finnish people don't mind. We understand that our language is hard to learn.
    But by god if you try to write Finnish songs, do ask a Finnish person, or anyone who speaks this language, ask for his opinion, any Finnish person would do, mostly Finnish people are very honest and fun people and they would be happy to help you with your song lyrics.

      Maybe its meant to be a more ancient version of Finnish. In her other songs, she doesn't use modern Norwegian or Swedish, but Old Norse. As a native English speaker, some sentences in Old English sound a little silly to me; like someone is speaking half English mixed in with toddler gibberish.

    • @KaiMarcad

      Mason Huffman Pronunciation sounds partly eastern and partly northern (Saami). It is ancient version of Finnish. It's just that I'd have to find some Saami person to tell me is my hunch correct. I'm from eastern Finland.

    • @lait_et_sang
      @lait_et_sang 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sukkamariini She says she actually contacted the finnish academy for help, and it is written in an ancient variety of northern finnish. What I think is going on with the lyrics, as many are finding them to be incorrect, is that it could be a "normalisation" of the written form, to bring it somehow closer to the modern variety of the language (suusi - susi). Double vowels always look more finnish ahaha. Add to that the fact that she's from the Netherlands and foreign languages are always tricky to bend into sung form, and there you have incorrect lyrics :)
      at least it's what I think, I study northern languages and like to ponder on things.
