- I get asked this question a lot in the comments and in my streams. Want a spoiler? There's only one way to farm strange coins and ascendant materials and I'm pretty sure you're not going to like the method.
That being said, I think the system is fair. You're technically not supposed to be able to farm these things en masse. They're supposed to be special things for specific occasions, not a farmable material or thing.

That idea to make 3 of the same character to share equipment is really good. I didn't think of that before but it makes so much sense. I'm definitely going to be doing that now, thanks for that tip. 27 Strange Coins a week here I come!

My main is Hunter but before patch I got tons armour for Titan and Warlock. My Hunter is 29 and Titan 28 plus I got an exotic helm, legendary arms, chest, boots for Warlock that I made so I am set for armour just need to level Warlock and bam.
god fucking damnit, by people making videos of this means its gonna get more noticeable and might get patched, ive been doing this for a while now, mainly cause theres not enough content to last through the week, one daily, one weekly, one nightfall, and one raid only last about 2 or 3 days, and the only reason it would last longer than that cause it takes time to assemble a team for the raid. but with three characters you get 3 of each which makes the game last alot longer until the weekly refresh, i just hope they dont patch this, it would only hurt the game since theres little to no content in it, its kinda sad that we have to break the game if we want to have enough content to last one fucking week.
Josh Dumont If you do this for all 3 characters, you're simply spending so much more time playing the game. And that is exactly what Bungie wants you to do, so it won't get patched.
I don't want to sound mean, but the idea of playing a daily heroic mission 3 times each day sounds dull. I don't mind playing that mission once and then doing something else. Otherwise, I only have a couple of hours each night to play and when I play a game I don't want to play it like doing chores. Bungie just needs to offer easier ways to get more shards and ascending material. There are other games to enjoy this fall then have 3 of the same class to just progress faster through the game.
Yeah I have to admit the only way that would be mildly amusing is with friends. I hope that add easier ways in the DLCs
There's nothing that says you can't play it how you want and just take longer to get materials to level up your gear... If your issue is speed, you have to grind.
Well sweet cheeks this is a mmo type of game either grind or get off. If it was easier then everyone will be high lvl and bored.

This isn't an MMO, it's a Sci-fi off-shoot of Diablo with a stingier, poorly-done loot system and a less-than-viable matchmaking system. The original IP was obviously raped by Casual Sellouts on the dev team.
DattoDoesDestiny I'm sure someone has mentioned this but to get more materials from the legendaries you need to: (This DOES NOT apply to armor, armor is 2-4 shards always, 4 being you got REAL lucky) For weapons, equip during bounty turn ins to level them, you will want to unlock all of the skill tree before breaking the weapon down. I get 5-6 Energies each time.

i'm the kind of guy who likes achievements(just gave away that i play on xbox) so i have all 3 classes(still have to complete the subclass for the warlock and hunter) my titan is level 29 but the hunter and warlock are 25 and i do most of the weeks content with a simple strategy
you need at least 1 friend to do it
just run the entire heroic/nightfall on your high level character
have the boss at very low health(like VERY LOW like 1 hit away from death)
if you ran through it alone then invite a friend at this point but if you ran through the activity with someone then disregard this step
if you're fireteam leader then give your friend the leadership
tell him to hide
change characters
have your friend invite you into the game(you will need to be at least level 25 on your secondary character to enter the nightfall or the 28 heroic)
if your friend wants to he can now do the same thing while you hide
kill the boss
and that's it pretty easy way for getting rewards from high level content with your low level character
you can do the same on the raid but you will have to do it at the end of each encounter(like before the last wave of oracles or before killing the templar) but that is kind of annoying to do for everyone on the team so i wouldn't recommend it

Thanks for the info Datto. The game industry being what it is these days, I'm amazed that Destiny doesn't have microtransactions where you could buy 5 strange coins for $5, or something equally grotesque.

In my recomended in 2019. I watched it anyway. Nice trip down memory lane.
If you don't wan't to do multiple chars (like me) just do a bunch of Tiger Strikes, so you will be awarded with a lot of engrams then you decrypt them and their you go.. by doing this everyday you will get a very good amount of Motes of Light and Strange Coins per week (this method ALWAYS gives me more Strange Coins overall than the Weekly Strike itself).
I've confirmed it myself. You do get more shards/energy if the armor piece/weapon in upgraded but it's the last few upgrades that make it so. And we all know those upgrades require shards/energy to upgrade so that would be stupid. Besides you only get 1-2 more materials so it's not worth it.
omg this is amazing because my brother came home for a week and he has a lvl 18 titan(same class as my lvl 28 titan) and now after leveling up his character to lvl 20 all i have to do is give him my gear and his character will be lvl 28 :) thanks Dattoo
It annoys me how because i don't have 5 other friends with destiny I am never able to do the vault of glass and I therefor miss out on a huge amount of content. There needs to be matchmaking for more things

***** I agree, It's pretty ridiculous that so many things got left out of the actual game, and need to be seen through the app/website. But atleast, rather than just giving up, the community has been able to come up with its own solutions.

DattoDoesDestiny One suggestion (verified) to get more materials out of a piece of armor, get the first upgrade done "easy way" turn a couple of bounties in with that piece of armor on and just get it to the first level that will just use money to upgrade, then dismantle it.
the one thing about this video that he fails to mention is that for every other character that you make, you have to level up their subclasses, which will not carry over from character to character, and take more experience to fully max out then just what it takes to reach level 20.
You can also get strange coins from engrams. I have got 1 from a rare engram and 2 from a legendary engrams multiple times. The chance is slim, but it can happen. several times I have decoded over 20 engrams and received between 4 and 7 strange coins. I usually get the rare engrams from doing the vanguard tiger strikes.
I only made more than one character because random loot drops kept giving me gear for other classes than my own, my first exotic armor piece was for hunter when I was only sticking to the titan. theres a large learning curve when crossing classes mainly because ability placement. if they allow trading it will be easy to sell exotic gear for coins and materials, allowing a small market.
Wow the method you did of switching gear to another class is something I hadnt thought about.

The thing about getting more materials for maxed out guns is true, i had a maxed out generic shotgun, but when i got invective i dismantled it and got 5 or 6 ascendant energy.
Prison of Elders is the current bed way to get strange coins motes of light legendary gear and even exotics, normally you get at least 2 of each material depending on wether or not you have a treasure key (with treasure key you receive 5 of each material and a legendary or exotic) I've been able to buy around 10 engrams per visit from Xur with this method just get a good group of friends that enjoy the game as much as you do.

I ranked up a weapon up until you need energy and got 5 energy (3 more than I should) and a telemetry, if you have parts and time to spare it's totally in your best interest to rank up before dismantling
Thanks for clarifying. I'll slowly get to 30 then. I want 1 of each class to get the trophies for upgrading the sub class of each character class. Besides, I got a few Legendary/Exotic armor pieces for Titan and Hunter (I'm Warlock).

Peraliq Most people dont have 5 friends on the same console that have the same game that will be on at the same time and are all a good enough level. Bungie NEEDS to implement matchmaking into the Raid and Nightfall strike.

Last night I helped my friends finished the final boss of the raid on hard (one of their member left so I only attended the final stage). It's freaking hard but we made it, and two members got the vex primary fusion… then after a few matches of iron banner, they say they were graduated… it's just so damn powerful. I got the raid helmet and a ship, as I have two exotic helmet already… just hope they can put a Titan armor this weekend for xur
Just do the tiger playlist, and all the engram's and such. They can give you strange coins I did 75 strike and I got 37 strange coins. I don't know if anyone has realized this but it pretty effective.
I believe you get at least one Ascendant shard/energy for the first time you do a Public event (gold) every day.
you get out up to 7 ascendant materials if you max out the exp on an item, I dismantled a maxed out piece without upgrades and with updates, you'll get out the same.
Datto, for the nightfall, you can get Strange Coins. I seen it as low as 5 coins all the way up to 9.

Destiny is not worth all this time! Once Halo and Cod AW comes out Destiny and all the time you put into it will mean nothing.

I'll just stick with the rare farming methods and do daily heroic at 28, weekly heroic, weekly nightfall, patrol and then the vanguard tiger until I have at least 18 engrams, which usually is obtainable after 2 hours. And considering that I am only one raid gear away from being able to become lvl 30 and have a decent amount of exotics maxed, I'd say the only inadequacy of my plan is the lack of raid players I've met that would be willing to play again. Otherwise, I'm content with my progression. Then again, I'm the patient kind of player, so if you want to become lvl 30 ASAP, do as Datto does.
I got thunderlord from a legendary engram yesterday. I am so happy.
I consistently get motes of light from blue engram's which seems to be the only engram I get that and green once in awhile the game will give me a couple of strange coins Bungie really should do something about this we can just buy the stuff we need don't know about anyone else but I've hit my glimmer limit with nothing left to spend glimmer on
I'm pretty sure you're limited to the amount of random ascendant rewards per week as opposed to per day. I must have got 4 or 5 in one day and then nothing for the next dozen Gold star public events that I completed. And this is with all 3 characters. So maybe 9 to 12 a week for Public events.
I dont believe its true that if you max out an exp bar on a piece of gear you get more ascendant materials. I dismantled my Ghost Angels which were maxed out (hunter gloves) because I got the raid gloves and only got 2 ascendant shards from it.
there is a way to farm shards i found out the easiest way for me was to play on my main character and just play crucible and or do strikes so you get marks. Then go buy legendary boots form your vangaurd vender and melt them then you only spend 65 marks then just do it on all 3 characters.

Datto, you should mention that you should probably be a level 28 (maybe 27) to be able max this it out like you illustrate at 5:09. Otherwise you're only getting around half the strange coins because you're most likely not going to beat the Raid, or Level 28 Nightfall, Weekly, or Daily when you're a 26. Fair?
Man that is a TON. I have a lot of nonstop playing to do. I was going to bed but I dont think Im allowed to after watching this vid lol. Only Level 20 Warlock and he other characters are level 1.
I've got 3 characters. I've got a lvl 28 warlock. After that I started leveling up a titan which was lvl 20 in one week and I had a full set of legendary armor for that so that one is lvl 25 now. And I've got a hunter lvl 25 as well
Ironically enough, I got three strange coins, and 5 motes of light, all from engrams, just this weekend
I manage to scrape together 5 or 10 extra coins per week from all the strikes I do. If u open 100 rare engrams at once if u don't get around that many I'd be suprised
This is a very smart method for getting lots of strange coins. But it gets so boring and repetitive ranking the same character to 20 3 times. I know there is nothing that we can do about it but Im still going to rank up my new guardians because I need the strange coins
Have you considered doing PVE character guides? I'm having a tough time choosing to main my Hunter or my Warlock.
Strange coins are pretty easy to get 27 from the weekly heroic &I seem to get a ton from the vanguard tiger got about 12 yesterday within a few hours
Wow I never thought of making multiple same classes i made a warlock and it's taking me a while to get it past lvl 25
I actually rather have 3 different class characters, I can only put about 7 hours a week into the game is I rather have fun with it rather than just grind. I just got my Main (hunter) to lvl 25 and just got started with my warlock(lvl 7), with the whole RNG I already have a legendary titan helm, exotic titan chest, and exotic warlock helm so it shouldn't be too difficult to get them all to lvl 28. and start working on it from there on.
I follow this exact method of three alts. I have LOTS of shards energies and I also farm lots of upgrade materials. I have ALL of the exotic bounty weapons from doing all the bounties and handing them in en masse. My clan is very social and we all join eachother once we see eachother online and do bounties and missions together and we have PvP nights all 6 of us smash through for PvP marks. we have 2 raid nights alpha team for our mains and beta team for our alts. we will start doing hard mode in a few weeks. all if us have at 2 or 3 of the same class for gear farm reasons. I'm constantly doing something every moment I'm on destiny once I'm home from work and have done what I need to do. it's not hard doing any if this. you must have regular friends on so you help eachother out. I'm very fortunate to have the friends I have. friends make destiny amazing
You can also get motes from chests but I only have seen that once, thought I leveled up but my xp bar was not even half full.
It might be possible to get coins from chests as well ,have not seen that yet.

All 7 times you get loot from the VoG, I got only ascendant shards, except for Chatterwhite.

Why do they make a short, repetitive game into a brutal grind? It's already bad enough by being short, why make me run a hamster wheel to actually get anything out of it?
They could at least allow you to trade ascendant materials for strange coins at a ratio of 2:1. The obvious downside being it takes longer to upgrade an exotic weapon if you pursue that path…

How can you beat the Raids and all the other hard difficulty missions? When me and my friends try them we end up spending an hour or more just trying to beat them. And just end up getting irritated and give up. Is there any strategies that I'm missing out on?
It seems like I get Strange Coins and Motes of Light from blue engrams and Crucible all the time. The very first legendary item I ever got was at level 24, and it was a lucky roll from a blue engram.
well said. I have 1 character each unfortunately. I have two 29's and one 28. the more chances for raid gear with same characters is a solid idea. too late for me though haha.
Actually there is another way to do this. Get engrams from your good character, put them in your vault, and them use them as a second character.
That's why I did when I was leveling up my warlock, I'd play Vanguard tiger get legendary engrams put em in the vault then when my warlock was at 20 I opened all of them up, I was level 24 in 3 mins.

I currently have a 28 warlock, 25 hunter and a 9 titan... I don't enjoy titan much so I guess I should make a new warlock and it should be faster.z

Well I played Warlock since Alpha and I enjoyed it a ton, I then played Hunter in Beta which was one of the funnest class but also in the Beta, I played Titan, which was pretty boring to play with...
when you play in the raid as a Hunter can it happen that you get Raid Armor for a Warlock or Titan?
Should i make double characters? If so, what character should i remove for the moment, Warlock or Titan ?

I have 48 moat of light and 48 strange coins also getting rare informs you have a good chance or tiger strikes and I also have 3 titans and tiger strikes give you a lot of rare I grams so you have a better chance of getting more

I had one upgrade on the A1.9218375rvihufusrfk pulse rifle and when I decided I hated pulse rifles with a fiery passion and got rid of it I got a pulse rifle telementary. Only time that's happened out of the 15 or so legendaries I've dismantled butjust wanted to say for anyone who wants to know the rewards for dismantling legendaries.
I was originally playing with the Hunter class and only that class and last week I obtained an engram for a Titan (Legendary body armor) and it confused me until I remembered my friend had started up a Titan character earlier that day in my profile to see what Destiny was all about.
So my question is, did I find that gear because he started a Titan campaign or is finding gear for other classes default in Destiny?

When I completed this weeks nightfall, I got 6 strange coins while my friend got last word and another got the culling machine gun. I'm fully decked, one exotic, and now with 35 strange coins.

Im a lvl 30 titan and they gave me 7 ascendant shards that i dont need, yet my friend gets hawkmoon an my brother gets hard light
you are not unlucky lol, i would have been happy if i got strange coins since i wanted to buy patience and time, instead i got a stupid legendary fusion rifle(purifier 7, slowest charge time period)
And I thought 77 wizard was the one with the slowest charge time

Is doing the raid on hard the only way to get the raid set helmet for titan, warlock, and hunter? What's the best way to beat it on hard? How often do you get raid gear? Meaning do you have a higher chance of doing it on hard or have a lower chance on normal? I have a a level 29 titan and a level 26 warlock, so is doing all titans the best method or is doing all three better? The only thing your character loses using datto's method is its soul. Or is it "their" soul, since you have an original and 2 clones?
I prefer having 3 different classes though its too bad that i need to level the titan and warlock a bit more requiring even more shards etc...

It sucks that you have to do something cheap to get the necessary materials to max out gear. Hopefully bungie fixes this soon and puts a more honorable way to get shards and energy.

When I checked his bungie profile he had completed it 12 times, but that was a while ago.
well i'd say he has done it at least 3 times a week since it came out(that is only if he has completed it on hard which we know he didn't since he completed it day one on normal)

The game isn't even fun enough to warrant this type of play. I have a hard time getting fun from one character doing the stuff, much less trying to do it on multiple toons. Fuck that. Just needs more end game content. The fact that Destiny was released with ONE end game raid is insane.

I have almost 30 ascendant energy and only like 3 shards, which is ironic because I have all legendary armor and only one legendary weapon. just pretty damn unlucky, I guess. I'm close to level 28, too. -_-

when you load up destiny there should be a massive new character button directly below your exsiting character, just click that, then play with this new character till its high enough level

I have two warlocks and a titan once my warlock is level 30 I will delete one of my warlocks and create another titan then once my titan is lvl 30 I will get rid of one and create a hunter
