Can't even appreciate the care that went into mass-producing these movements enough :) A watchmaker told me that you could swap bridges between movements and the Côtes de Genève would match up.

That's the cleanest and least worn watch I've ever seen you work on. The owner and previous watchmakers were very meticulous and careful. And you too, of course!
Really cool how you showed the pallet fork staff skewed to the right, indicating the kind of beat error. I had not seen that before.
Thanks as always, Stian, and Merry Christmas to you!

I do think this is one of the most beautiful movements ever made and that goes also for the styles IWC used in dials and cases back then. Highly underrated I feel. I would love to own an example one day. Simple black calf or buffalo strap with black stitching, a nice thin strap would be the perfect accompaniment to it as well. Non of those god awful modern things with the horizontal lug end stitches, YUK!

To make the watch even more special, buy one from the year of your birth. Thats what I did. Elegantly understated without bling. An 8541D.1967. It makes me proud every time I wear it! Oh yes. I am in worse shape than my IWC!

First. Man you're not kidding about the fix o drop bottles. Good grief it's insane. Nice watch, it cleaned up well. I'm in total agreement with you, the different materials used make for a beautiful color palette inside.

Hello. Thanks for the video. Interestingly, I'm renovating my father-in-law's watch. He got it from his mother 60 years ago. The watch is from 1949. Since then it (the watch!!) lay in a drawer and was not worn. Now I'm renovating it. It also has no scratches or so, so I have to be extra careful (am a hobbyist!). Thanks, the video helps me a lot. Greetings Marc

Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I was overjoyed to see you working on a Cal.89!
I bought one; a 1949 CAl.89 with teardrop lugs and fish crown, about 10 years ago, and paid 4000Skr., as it wasn't keeping good time. Nevertheless, I knew enough to know that it was a bargain for a calibre I'd always wanted to own.
I got it serviced in Malmo straightaway and it kept very good time, but decided it could do better.
I gave it the tiniest of nudges on the regulation and we were in business.
From then on it never varied from the ORIGINAL timesetting by more than +/-15s after 3 months!
The only reason why it wasn't longer is that I forget to wind it one day.
What a superb piece of engineering and many thanks for your great program.
BTW. Did you know that a major shareholder in IWC at one time was Carl Jung the Psychologist.

Thank you so much for the holiday gift. It's been some time since you last posted a video featuring the glorious IWC Calibre 89 movement. Watches with this movement should be retrofitted with exhibition cases. It's kind of funny that while mechanical movements generally are appreciated for having a smoother second hand sweep than quartz movements, in the late 1950s several manufacturers such as JLC, Rolex and Omega, invested considerable effort to develop the dead-beat second function, which caused the second hand to move in one second increments like quartz watches do. It was very difficult and expensive to accomplish. The watches were intended to provide more accurate time measurements for engineers, but never really caught on. Now they are comparatively rare. Hope you are feeling better, and Merry X-mas to you and the family, Stian.

At first I thought you were going to leave the hairspring untouched and do a lousy job, but I knew you knew better. Sure enough at 20mins you change the position of the hairspring to have the index zeroed and beat figured out. You would be surprised how many watchmakers across the pond just leave it and say to the customer "oh you just get that (error and a index off to one side) in a watch that old". Some of these schools don't teach hairspring work nor recommend a good bench practice book.
Nice xmas treat though, thank you.

Merry Christmas to you and yours! And thank you for being a good companion for another year. You are a small but important and wholly positive part of my life.
If I may offer a very small correction, actually, there used to be two guilds in the watchmaking town of Schlopwasser. Die Rechtshänder Schrauber and Die Linkshänder Schraubendreher, and under the Westfalian Concord of 1710, the former could make only right hand turn screws, and the latter could only make left-hand turn screws. (This had something to do with superstition against left-handed people, but details are understandably murky.) Of course, the watchmakers were innocent of any discrimination, but were forced to live under the rules, and had to order their tiny screws from the two different sources. Interestingly, with the guilds, the distinction was even carried through to marriage traditions. The right handed screwmakers could often be heard to say to their wives, “Liebchen, you’re right, as always.” But their sinister counterparts said, “You’re left.” Understandably, their divorce rate was much higher. It’s all true, but you could be forgiven for not knowing.

If we want to talk Maß produced beauty, Check out a Hamilton railroad pocket watch… although I do lust after a caliber 89 myself. I’ve bought a few watches after your videos of certain movements, particularly the Longines 30L and the Ebel 1911 Sport Chronograph; I also have Omega 550s (quite a few-lost count honestly) 1020s. (I own two, one being the first ‘luxury’ watch I ever bought, and the other costing me $37 in good, running, accurate condition), and an eta 2824 (a pair of Sandoz of Asian assembly, and I did own (but sold) a Tissot Ballade, the first Swiss mechanical I bought new- actually I only bought two Swiss mechanical watches new, the other being an Omega 2531.80) but those I bought before you started, lol.
Excellent job on this one, and the other caliber 89. I mean the shown work is all that I’d wish for a watchmaker to lavish on a watch I sent in for service, and the serious commentary is brilliantly informative and understandable to the novice. But I miss the quantity of humor some videos had more of.

Must have spent a lot of time in the sock drawer, in between trips to Maison Manesse. Very nice (and careful) service!
I think I will start growing lab-created fix-o-drop bottles - got to be cheaper than the hand-cut offerings! Speaking of proper tools for working gently, I'm still trying to find some brass #7A-BRA tweezers. You sent me contact info for Regine (thank you!) but they do not answer my emails. I actually tried calling (they are open from 3:30PM to 1:30AM my time) call went to hold for 5 minutes, then disconnected. Anyway, I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this year! Please keep up the great videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I've been watching watchmaker videos for a few years now. When I do and they inevitably remove, clean and replace the balance wheel jewels, (cap jewel and hole jewel) after assembled and after running, I can't for the life of me think why they do this. I cringe every time the jewels are replaced, waiting for the jewel to drop into the spinning balance and snap off a pivot, or worse. All these other watchmakers do this without exception. Thank you for being the exception. Which IMHO, should be the rule. I'm just a novice, and therefore my opinion is perhaps invalid. But it seems to me that if you remove the jewels from the balance wheel cock and maniplate before being putting them into the cleaning machine, and reinstall them after cleaning and before running, all the parts will come out cleaner and you will reduce the risk of damage greatly. Thanks for what you do. Love your method, approach and style.

I notice this balance wheel has small weights on it. I've noticed other watches have no balance wheel weights. I assume they are weights and that they're used to balance the wheel, but how does the original watchmaker know where to place the weights? And why are there so many on this balance wheel but on others there are none? Thank you for sharing your work with us. It's a pleasure to watch a craftsman like yourself practice his trade.

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching! Those little screws are timing screws, and they're placed in pairs symmetrically around the rim of the balance to allow a watchmaker to make tiny adjustments if the balance is out of poise. This balance in fact has two special eccentric weights at the balance spokes to make such adjustments.

Thank your for this beautiful Christmas present, Stian. Also, for the gift of your voice and insights.
    IWC? Where to begin?
When my father received an engraved steel IWC pocket watch for his 25 years of service in an important position in one of the most renowned Swiss industrial enterprises, his first impulse was to throw it against a wall and step on it. I rescued the watch, but had to promise never ever to remind him of its existence.
My father had always been interested in watches and at the time owned an 18k yellow gold Omega Seamaster automatic, a white gold Blancpain ("the thinnest movement ever produced") and a white and yellow gold Rolex (for which we never forgave him).
Anyway, the IWC seemed to insult him. Ever since, their watches have not been looked on favorably by our family.
My own dream of buying a perpetual calendar watch had to wait for almost 35 years, because the only affordable model was the "Da Vinci" by IWC, which basically looked like a pocket watch ... and every serious watchmaker here in Zürich told me to stay away from IWC. Not because they are bad watches - your piece shows this very well - but because they do not have a great potential as investments.
Your watch is classic and beautiful, though, so it should sell well and that is what I wish for you and your family.
