As someone who had already seen Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions shows, among others, actual performances wrapped in theatrics, call and response, solos, etc, I found their show to be downright boring. Most of the best albums were recorded in a hot flash. Strike while the iron is hot… hit the ‘record’ button on the first take… catch lightning in a bottle. The big mistake so many bands make is that they spend way too much time in the studio pursuing perfection, and they forget all about inspiration. The first Cars album is a classic example of what happens when you just go for it while you’re feeling it.

It’s sad to me that people are so hung up on labels and categories, or ‘genres’ or whatever. Jesus, just enjoy the damn music and quit worrying about which box it goes in. It’s never been an issue for me. I don’t know, maybe I’m an anomaly. All I know is that The Cars blurred those lines better than most, and for that reason they confused a lot of people. People still loved ‘em anyway, and I mean people from all different backgrounds. I was a hard rocker transitioning into punk at the time, and the Cars were neither of those things but I loved them anyway. Still do… at least those first two albums.

I dunno. To me and to many others, that song really encapsulates the late 70’s. I mean yes, it obviously foreshadowed the early 80’s, but so did more than a few other new wave bands right around that exact same time. DEVO, B-52’s, Elvis Costello, Blondie, etc. What set the Cars apart from other similar bands was the way they seamlessly bridged the genre gaps. People still argue about how they should be categorized (which to me is silly and pointless, but people love to argue about these things). Were they ‘new wave’? Were they power pop? Were they just plain old rock? On and on and on. I’m of the opinion that they were all of those things.

The New Wave started in 1974. The Cars were part of a wave of bands that were as innovative as they were, and like them shared a deep appreciation for the Velvet Underground. Listen to Devo’s cover of Satisfaction, Television, the Modern Lovers, Pere Ubu, and many others.

@@joemagarac405 Just out of curiosity, why 1974? I mean I know that Television started out that year (as did the Ramones and Blondie), but none of those bands had any released recordings until ‘76. I know it’s probably just splitting hairs, but I’ve always thought that ‘76 was the birth year for new wave, and then ‘77 was when it really kicked in to high gear. However I couldn’t agree more that it all had it’s roots in what the Velvet Underground was doing in the mid to late 60’s, along with a few other ‘ahead of the curve’ bands, like The Stooges, MC5, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, and dare I say it… The Doors.

Benjamin Orr in particular was adamant about keeping his private/ personal lives separate. They were just classy that way, they never aired anything in public. In August of 2000, knowing that Ben did not have much time left they sat for a final interview to reminisce and discuss their music. I knew this was something special, even as a 7th grader. Then that short, fast, but infinitely memorable guitar lead of Elliot's sealed the deal, and I was hooked. These guys were it. In the middle of the Venezuelan Andes, the tiny city of Merida I was walking home when suddenly from a new record shop that had so few records that they hanged their stock on the wall, I saw that LP cover of a beautiful girl grabbing a steering wheel and the name The Cars. Merida had only 3 AM radio stations in those days (1980) that put only Guaracha, Cumbia, Salsa and Merengue nothing of Rock and I was one of the very few who heard and liked Rock and I was nicknamed Peter Rock. I said to myself that if the music wasn't nice at least I'd have a poster of a beautiful girl to hang on my wall. Everything changed when I heard the record, so superb songs. Later, when I was in my late twenties, me and my buddies went to a famous cycling race in the famous mining town of Bisbee AZ. There were thousands of people attending. I remember one of my buddies running up to us and shouting, "I just saw Ric Ocasek and Paulina Poriskova walking down the street!". We all took off running, as we were all fans of Paulina, my favorite Sports Illustrated swimsuit model of all time, and cause we were also huge Cars fans. Sure enough, we spotted the super tall Ocasek in the crowd, and managed to get really close, to checkout Paulina! We couldn't believe our great luck! That is a day I will always remember!

This channel.... man.. it has helped me remember all the great times from the 80s.. the late 70s through the early 90s was "my era" becoming a preteen all the way through to my high school years, marriage, babies and the divorce. All the good was hiding behind a bad marriage... this channel has helped me see my life through the music.. the good and the bad. To where now its all good. The lessons learned sat to the music of my life. Even the missing someone when i hear a song is tempered by the wisdom of age. Im 56 and im still a music junky. Some of my favorites now are like nova rockefeller and tom McDonald, mammoth. And just whatever hits me. I can share music with my teenage grandson. And we can both agree taylor swift is over rated...
But thank you for the memories.

It's just amazing that The Cars never had a #1 hit, especially with the song "Drive" which for me is as good as music gets. At any other time that's easily a #1 smash, but it was released in the summer of 1984, one of the greatest years for music in history.

The Cars is such a good band! Everyone loved their music and I have several in my 80's playlist. Magic is one of those that sends me right back to Jr High/High school parties and kicking back with friends or riding around with my sister driving us to the mall or the movies or whatnot. Earlier Cars always brings the skating rink to mind 😄
That band is a big part of the best memories of my life😊!

There are a few bands that I remember that made an immediate impact as soon as their album came out, one was Boston, and the second was The Cars. Oddly, they’re both from Boston. You could probably add in Van Halen to that mix as a very close third. You were just blown away by the entire album and the sound, and you knew immediately who they were. To this day, Drive, still reminds me of my high school girlfriend.

I have every album and still play the Cars songs almost every day. Every single member was so talented...I cried the day Ben died...and again when Ric passed away. I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in the 80's! Thank you for your videos on the Cars Adam!

I had a roomate from Chelmsford Massachusetts who introduced me to the Cars. He told me the Cars were from Carlisle Massachusetts - a suburb of Boston. The band name “The Cars” is a play on Carlisle. I worked on the stage of a Cars concert in Milwaukee Feb 1982 and foolishly declined the ear protection offered. My hearing was never quite to same, but it was a great experience. Good memories, Good time roll.

I was helping set up the equipment on the stage in Cincinnati gardens for my uncle's band, 38 special, don barnes , and rick pulled up in a Chevy nova and had about four boxes of the new album of theirs, candy o. He signed and gave us all one of them, he ended up hanging out with us for two days and then got up and said well I gotta go to California, lol. And then he jumped in the nova, after we filled the radiator up with water and he disappeared as quickly as he showed up, five weeks later he played with us in Texas with zz top at a small county fair and none of us were supposed to be there playing we just stopped to rest and walk around for a while and ended up meeting the local band playing and they asked us to join them and we did, that's just one of many stories i put in the book i wrote about being a teenager with two famous family bands growing up in the 70's and 80's, and many of the stories about things that happened along the way, it was a real battle trying to be your own self and trying to be better than 38 special and or skynyrd , i realized fast that I would never reach what they have so I just decided to hang on and hope for the best lol, i always set the equipment up and made sure the stage and everything around it were right, i bet you never went to a concert of theirs and them have trouble with equipment during the show, nope. Cause I checked everything five times

How many albums can be listened to all the way through (other than compilations) and not have one bad song? Sure "I'm In Touch With Your World" was a bit quirky, but the chorus really sold it. The first album was phenomenal and Candy-O was just straight on good times music all the way through the album. I got both on my phone and listen to them back-to-back on a regular basis. Thank you, Prof, for putting this together. Cheers!

I just love this band. They are one of my favorites. The Cars first album is one of my favorite debut albums of all time. They sure had some great influences. Lou Reed was a great influencer of music for sure. Once upon a time a great DJ could really influence music. These guys were ahead of their time. What a band, they had it all. My favorite playlist on spotify is dominated with music from The Cars. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁

Yes, Lou Reed was perhaps one of *THEE* top 5 greatest influencers in the entire history of rock music. Any new band back then that was even remotely ahead of the curve was made up of members who all had Transformer and the Velvet Underground’s albums in their collections. People don’t realize just how extensive Lou’s influence was, and still is. The Cars were one of many bands who were inspired by Lou.

I was a musician who graduated in 1980, so you can imagine just how much they influenced me. What I do remember from their arrival on the scene was some of the guys I knew labeling them as a synth band, my response being “really? There are two guitars, and have you listened to those soloes?!”

    • @justaskin8523
      @justaskin8523 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, a lot of people will hear some bleeps and bloops and to them it's all synth. Not a slam on Greg Hawkes of course. He was great, plus he's a multi-instrumentalist who can also play guitar, bass, sax, piano, ukulele, and gobs of other instruments.

Oddly enough, this article came along as I found myself in a fever over the album Candy -O again for the first time in a long time. The guitar in the title song is so amazing. This was my favourite band in highschool: 1979-1984. Back in highschool I was known like you as the music trivia guy to my classmates. I knew a lot of music but the Cars first five albums stood out to me.
