    I acquired about 1000 comics from a guy that closed his shop about a year ago for super cheap and it was all image comics and dark horse..like the early stuff...before I bought these comics I had never seen the art for these type of comics...but man, the art back then was so amazing. I still have them here and there i go back into the boxes and look over the covers and some of the stories....the art back then was something else.

      Nice score! I’m sure you have tons of gems there. Yes, the art was spectacular back then. Sometimes I wish we could go back.

    Man, love your videos. Whenever I feel like I am running out of things to read I feel you share fresh recommendations (at least for me, I started collecting comics in 2019). Thanks for the recommendations. Hope all is well

    I’m really glad you put Revival as an honorable mention. I agree it doesn’t go down as one of the greatest of the greats when you’re talking about legendary Image stuff but Revival is definitely a favorite of mine and I see it talked down on or just not talked about at all relatively often and I love it. It went a little off the rails the last handful of issues but for a longer running series it was 👌

      Since the closure of Vertigo and when talking about horror/fantasy comics, most readers do not think of Image at first, but of Dark Horse, Devil’s Due and Zenescope. However, Image has published some of the best stories by some of the most talented creators of recent times. Revival is one of those. A testament of the quality and variety of the publisher. There is something good for everyone.

    I wish wildstorm didn't become an imprint of DC. Can you imagine if Gen 13, dv8, storm watch, and wildcats fought in the Invincible war? How cool do you think that would be?

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It would’ve been glorious! Joining DC was the worst thing that ever happened to Wildstorm. So much wasted potential. Hopefully one day we get the Wildstorm universe we deserve.

    I love what you said about these books. On monstress, Forget the awards. The comic is insane, beautiful, epic. It’s so good. The characters are so fleshed out in monstress. The world is so fleshed out. This is my favorite image comic. People say it’s too complicated but I think binging it makes it a much easier read. The journey of the main character has been amazing. I love this comic. I dig what you said about east of west. It’s not a character story, it’s more a theme driven story, using the characters as a way to express ideas more than anything. At first I was bummed but when I thought of it like that, I felt much more satisfied.

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think awards and accolades are a good way to gauge the quality of a book. What separates Monstress from the rest on this list, is the fact that it has well received by different literary communities besides traditional comic book venues. It is not your standard run-of-the-mill. It is something entirely different. The world buildup is insane and the art is amazing. It is a combination of fantasy, steampunk, horror, JRPGs and so much more. It is its own thing and there is nothing else like it. It pushes Image in a new direction closer to the work you find in manga. That in itself is refreshing.
      Now, East of West is close to a space opera. The political intrigue and social commentary are all over the place. To fully enjoy it, readers have to hold on for the ride and worry less about the personal details. It is a full blown cinematic experience page by page. On the same scope of Dune and other epic stories.

    And hey buddy you know angstrom levy from invincible you know who I can see voicing him? Keith David. If that happens that it be the first image comics character that he's ever voiced since Spawn. Hopefully that happens in Invincible season 2. If not I can see him voicing the Viltrumite that looks like Steve Harvey named Lucan. Oh and also I got a good voice actor for Grand Regent Thragg. Jeffrey Dean Morgan. If you've seen the Walking Dead show or read The Walking Dead comic then you'll know it'll be like Glenn getting his revenge with Negan.

    Wasn’t Spawn part of DC?

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It is the sole creation of Todd McFarlane and it has been published by Image comics since the start. Spawn did a few crossovers with Batman back in the 90’s though.

    love the video I've been there since the start of image but the best comic series ever put out by image was the walking dead,but I guess I understand y u have spawn number 1,but its not as good as the walking dead,or as valuable, more ppl know about walking dead then spawn,please stop,u know its true,walking dead was the face of image comics for over 10 years it carried image through some bad times,if it wasn't for walking dead image would be out of business n it would not have made it 30 years,and papergirls should have been in the list its just as good as saga.

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paper Girls is good but not on my top 10. I prefer Saga over it. Now, I see your point about the Walking Dead. However, Spawn is more iconic and still in print. Also, Spawn carried Image through some rough times. At the end, it is all a matter of perspective.

    Lazurus is way better than East of West. Ruka is the truth.. On break now.😮😡 Chew I heard was good. Art of Lazurus is hardcore. Saga is a woke shock value book. Overrated but it does not hold back with killing top people

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly does. Shock value is the biggest tool for Saga to keep readers engaged. East of West is phenomenal if you see it as a plot driving story. The art alone is fulfilling. Lazarus is definitely better character-wise. Rucka is a much better writer IMO. The best description I can think of these two series, is that East of West is a movie trilogy while Lazarus is a TV series. They both have their pros and cons.

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly did. It took awhile though. Walking Dead was certainly better from the start but as you said, it fell off by the end. Kirkman got probably tired of writing the story after a few years.

      @@jpsarri agree. Political stuff is cool if interesting. Death is boring. Other players were eh. Starts off cool but then it went downhill

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately East of West’s Achilles heel is its own creator. Don’t get me wrong, Jonathan Hickman is a brilliant writer. However, he is so focused on his stories that he forgets to develop his characters. He creates great premises and amazing worlds full of life, intrigue and literary potential, but he fumbles when trying to bring it all together. In writing, less is always more. Characters are the center and not the plot.

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, that is not always the case. Good plot-driven stories can also convey strong messages and entice audiences to care. Case in point; the Sandman, The Lord of the Rings, the Iliad. These are great examples of plot driven stories on which the emphasis is less in the characters but more in the events surrounding them and setting their lives in motion. Now, writing this type of stories requires strong literary dexterity. Not every writer knows how to do it well. That is one of the reason character- driven stories are more common and more popular. However, that does not mean every character-driven story is a winner. There are plenty stories with characters who show great potential, but the plot falls short due to the writer choosing a boring or a predictable path. These type of stories have the right ingredients (the characters) but the wrong cooking method (the way you develop the plot) to bring the recipe to life.
