There simply exists no replacement for Steve Perry's voice. The clarity, the height and the fullness of his voice clearly state this. His voice is unique and will remain so for all time.
I feel so for him even though this was a few years ago. I hope he has found peace and happiness after all that he has given his fans. Still hoping that some day he feels that he can share his gift with his again.
You're correct that when you lose your mom, you do lose a part of yourself. I can relate to that. My mother was killed in an auto accident when I was 15 years old. You never get over losing your mother, at least I didn't. There is a special bond there between mother and child.
I went to my first Journey concert back in 1983 and my second in 1985 (with Randy Jackson on Bass) - without a doubt he is the absolute best male singer I have ever heard live - truely amazing - one of a kind gift. He is missed. He must sing somewhere I don't know how he could keep from singing.
Steve does just as great doing solo, & am proud that he moved on. Never get tired of his songs----his beautiful voice, as always, precious, timeless, endless.... Love ya, Steve, wishing you the very best!!!
STEVE IS SUCH A SWEETHEART!HE'S BEEN MY HERO AND MY IDOL SINCE I WAS ABOUT 7-SINCE 1981, FOR THE LAST 27 1/2 LONG YEARS!AND HE GETS BETTER AND BETTER AND HOTTER LOOKING WITH AGE! His personality-and the way he explains things, his eye and facial expressions and his body language-personality wise-as funny as this sounds-he reminds me an awful lot of both of my parents-he should have been a teacher. WE LOVE AND MISS YOU STEVE!YOU ARE THE VOICE!WITHOUT YOU JOURNEY IS NOTHING!YOU'RE #1 FOREVER!
Steve explains--as only he can--why he left Journey. It was obviously a very hard decision for him, one he didn't take lightly. He looks great in this video!
@raymondelaw Well said...While he wasn't an original member, he WAS the catalyst that made them famous, wealthy, and co-wrote the songs for which they will always be remembered, unlike the anemic couple of songs that have charted in Revelation then just as quickly faded away, when the only way they can sell out an arena is in an oldies tour with Heart, or part of an oldies festival, or in Manila due to Arnel's following among his countrymen.
I think other stuff was going on behind the scenes that Steve really didn't want to get into in this interview. I think there was a battle for control of the group between Neal and Perry. Neal comes across as an opportunist and he simply needed to make some money to pay bills. He saw his chance and took control. Steve is, always will be the REAL JOURNEY!
I LOVE THIS INTERVIEW AND THE ONE IN CANADA AND THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED. When he talks the way he comes across is like my mom-that's the air sign coming through-my parents are and were both geminis-he's an aquarius, his birthday is 3 days after mine. But air signs love to educate,he should have also been a music teacher-he's extremely smart,so listening to him is like listening to my parents-especially my mom-she's my best friend. Love this. and i love a man with some brains!lol.
Wanted to say 1 more thing:Steve you have the most beautiful set of eyes I have ever seen on a guy!Wow!Those beautiful hazel eyes are so very deep and so very expressive-almost mesmerizing-tose what I like to call "Bedroom-Come Hither eyes"!I guess as you always say:"The Eyes Are The Window To The Soul". I could stare into those eyes and listen to that voice forever and never get enough or get tired!YOU ROCK MY WORLD!LOVE YOU STEVE-ALWAYS AND FOREVER!YOU'LL ALWAYS BE #1 FOREVER!
I think it is Rheumatoid Arthritis. It can take a huge impact on an average person; imagine what it would do to a huge star, THE VOICE Steve. With or without RA, Steve, we miss you. You will always be part of our lives.
Its kinda weird. Steve says he stopped listening to music following his loss, mine was the opposite. After my loss, and my counterpart shot himelf in front of me, some of his music helped me through it and thats all I did was music. Thanks Steve for the inspiration and coping mechanism. Love Steves distinct voice. I'm Okay and still love the music. Rock on Steve Perry!!!
Ahem...I'm 56 with a 17 year old. Don't 'plant us not-so-old folks in the ground prematurely' (gentle teasing here...). And that 'old' man I'm sure could show 99.9% of the young men out there some tricks when it comes to anything in the arena of 'wowing' the women-after all, he has people who have been pining for him for 30 years! My poor husband is just glad I only discovered him last year. Somehow, I missed the 80's entirely, so my obsession is still in its infancy! A new album-my b-day is Feb
I haven't lost my mom-but I can kind of understand, I just lost my grandmother on Mother's Day Morning-and because she was my mother's mother-I am watching my mother go through a very rough time because the 2 were extremely close, it's like watching a horror movie in slow motion. But I lost my dad in April 2003 too. But my grandma and I were also extremely close and my mom and I are Executors and POWER OF ATTORNEY over her estate/assessts.So I can kind of relate-I had 2 mothers. Bless You Steve.
He said his mother had developed a very Terminal Health Threatening situation-a very rare neurological brain disease-he didn't exactly sy what that disease was on Behind The Music, but I also had heard he had developed a bone disease which was part of the reason why he'd had the hip surgery. Which I'm no doctor-but if I had to speculate-because I do know a bit about bone diseases-I'm guessing either Osteo or RA as I have Fibromyalgia and have done my homework. STEVE KEEP ROCKING-WE LOVE YOU!
angiedawson1969, I really like what you said-FINALLY SOMEONE THAT AGREES WITH ME!THANKYOU JESUS!LOL-Amen to that. About 2 nights ago-I watched a Journey concert on classic vh1 with Arnel Pineda leading them-just out of meer curiousity-needless to say I wasn't impressed, and I saw them Live in cocert in 2003 when Augeri was leading them-again-not impressed-lol. Give it up Neil! You can't and will never be able to replace"the voice" Steve Perry-there is no Journey without Perry.
no its not arnel's fault its neals. neal needs to give it up the magic is gone. it left when steve left and it's never coming back. he can get 100 singers that sound like steve not happening. go read the GQ interview with steve and neal. who is the one that is bitter?? not steve.
Well, he aint young anymore. He's the same age as my dad which is 60 years old. I would hate to turn on the news and hear that he had passed away. That will ruin my day I love Steve Perry!
Patiently4u, Yeah I know he said degenerative bone disease and that's why I was guessing or speculating-as I know many people that have bone diseases and have many relatives that have had their hips replaced because of bone disease. That's what doctors are watching for with me-because I have Fibromyalgia-and if the body doesn't respond to treatment it gets worse and as I understnd it-goes into bone disease-they're doing tests on me now for oa and ra. Having my left knee replaced in december.
I can probably tell you why he cut his hair. He has REALLY Thick hair-by the looks of it-and it grows fast-I should know-my hair is real thick too and after awhile-thick hair that grows so dang fast becomes a real pain in the butt-I just cut my hair short again-after having real long hair and getting sick of dealing with it and trying something new sometimes isn't all bad. But I agree-I love his hair too-to me his long hair was his trademark-it will be long again soon-it'll grow back. Callie.
The HAIR - it's enough to drown in alone. I'm soooooo sorry he's cut it all off, gained weight, etc., but seasons change. As we lose the outside, beauty is gained inward. It is then that one finds their truest friends. I will love Steve in any package.
carslter33 You're right I listen to it again and he said 'MY MOTHER"(didn't hear this part) developed a terminal health situation.....I better go clean my ear real good...lol.Anyway its a Degenerative bone decease.
Neil Schon treated Steve like dirt; he just does not want to get into it because he is far, far too sweet. Stevie Baby has done perfect on his own, yet to this day there is no true replacement for Perry in Journey -- unless someone thinks a Karaoke singer wannabe measures up!
Steve said the reason he stop is because for the last few years of touring he developed a TERMINAL HEALTH THREATENING situation,I guess this is what he meant TOAST.So he need to stop for his life which a lot of people don't understand including me at first.Bless you Steve and you're still being love by your fans forever.

I have a ton of respect for Steve. Not just for an amazing voice, but for the good man that he is.
Steve MADE Journey! He is the best, the VOICE!
HE led Journey to SIX,count 'em SIX ,MULTI-PLATINUM albums!!!! Not counting STREET TALK which I think went PLATINUM !! HE truly is THE VOICE.
Steve Perry is and will always be Journey. Without him they are nothing but a cover band.
I feel so for him even though this was a few years ago. I hope he has found peace and happiness after all that he has given his fans. Still hoping that some day he feels that he can share his gift with his again.
Need more Steve Perry music!
Aw, just love to listen to him speak. I can listen to him 24-7. Thanks for posting this interview.

the greatest singer 2 ever walk this earth. cant wait for some new perry material...

That accent you hear is from his Portugese mother.
i dsont think, but there is only one steve perry!!!

He may be 59, but in this clip he was 45
Why did he cut his hair . . .I always just wanted to touch it.

sorry but steve is too emotionally fragile and physically fragile
