- GM Figured it would make the most sense to create a truck capable of towing 7700 pounds but then would hide it behind a $800+ paywall.
Sooooo, I picked up a $300 receiver and installed it in just a couple hours.
Here are links to some of the parts I used in the video.

LED bed lights (they're sold for a Silverado but they mount into the Colorado's and Canyons, they just need to be wired in with a switch) ~ amzn.to/4cVvqAv
Thanks man, subbed bc I just bought a Colorado without the tow package and now I’ll knock this out too
Thanks! I'm glad this helped.
Well done, your video helped identify how I’m going to get access to the back of the bumper , thanks bud👍
I'm glad it helped!
That’s a lot of work, I’m glad mine allready came with tow package!
It wasn't too bad.
I did mine and didn't have to remove the bumper,Put straps on it loosen bolts and the factory hitch drops off after removing the bolts.Slide new in and your done.I then install the CURT 51170 Spectrum trailer brake controller and it works fine. And buy a class 4 hitch for max towing.
Yeah it's just easier to video and show you guys by pulling it off. Honestly removing wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
Interesting. It's always funny how there's factory wiring for things that should just be there anyway. On my 4Runner and Tacoma there is a wiring harness already in place for a trailer brake controller... but no trailer brake controller available. You have to go find an aftermarket one. They do 90% of the job but don't finish it. 🙂
Yeah it's kinda odd what mfgs do to standardize their build process and just leave the rest to the end user figure out.
Do you have an install video for those bed lights and step lights? I didn’t see anything and would love to do something like that.
I haven't yet and I certainly can do that soon.
I put a Curt class 3 hitch on my 2018 Colorado 2.5, I couldn't go over 70 mph towing my in-laws popup camper on the highway... not enough squirrels in that 4 banger.
This 2.7 turbo tows good so far.
Damn how big was the trailer?
It was not left off all of them like you make it seem.
It was an added option and not a factory included option. GM went to an ala carte style build process a few years ago.
Mine came with tow hitch same color too
I love this color
@BadlandIndustries like your video brother keep up the good work! I only follow cause of the truck..lol
I have a’23 Colorado that didn’t come with the trailering package. I just installed the hitch and am going to order the wiring harness. Is removing the dummy plug simply just pulling it out? I tried earlier and it was a little stubborn, so didn’t want to force it.
Congrats man. Yea the plug just pops out. Lemme try and tag you in the short I made.

@@BadlandIndustriesthank you!!
What kind of bed lights are those?
I have a link in the description for them. They're sold as Silverado lights but thew bolt in and simply need to be wired up to the stock pigtail behind the driver tail light.
Hopkins site says this 7pin/4pin plug will not fit the 23 colorado. True or not
The Hopkins 40974 is the exact one I purchased, installed and have linked in the video description. It will 100% fit and work. amzn.to/49gGNC8
@@BadlandIndustries thanks
Good video by the way!
Looks like the shop truck has a 6ft bed how does the 5ft bed in the 23' work for you.
For what I need the truck for it does fine. I have a small utility trailer for the things I don't want to put in the bed.
Keep in mind the true tow package also comes with a larger alternator, trailer brake controller, and trailering app in the infotainment system. I wouldn't tow 7700 lbs without the bigger alternator and an aftermarket trailer brake
Yes and no. Depending on the trim you still get the alternator if you get the 110v bed plug. The trailering app really only has the ability to save trailer profiles. All that really does is remember your brake setting. That might be something you change anyway given what it's loaded with. Certainly this isn't an equivalent to every situation where the factory trailering package was purchased but it does give those the option to install a reciever and not have to drill through the bumper if they need to tow.
Thanks for helping me better understand that@@BadlandIndustries
Any idea what's involved in adding a trailer brake controller, are the wires to add it under the dash?
@jimmythomas611 there's rumors of an aftermarket one coming. I had considered using the Bluetooth one I linked but I haven't bought a trailer just yet and haven't quite made up my mind.
@@BadlandIndustries do you think there are any issues with the smaller 170-amp alternator. I don't do much trailering but want to add the trailer hitch as my AT$ didn't have the tow package. Great videos - Thanks!
That is TOTAL BS not to include a receiver hitch!
Some people just don't need them. With the bumper being rated maybe the ball is sufficient for those that tow infrequently.
