Maynard is using a metaphor that will shock and provoke people to prove his larger point: that we're living in a society that increasingly requires us to become more and more stimulated in order to feel a reaction to anything.

Honestly, thats kind of the story of their discography as a whole. Its something maynard has talked about in response to some early fans who didnt like the change in style from undertow to aenima. I cant remember the exact quote, but he basically said how you see these rockstars and metal artists who go through these negative emotions, and they scream their head off about them but then never move through it or heal from it and they spend their whole career just screaming their heads off, and he didnt want to do that. He said that if making the music doesnt help him heal, how the hell is it supposed to help the people listening to it?

I'm not a therapist but I went through a crap ton of things. And Tool along with Korn really helped me get thru suicidal things & a really long heroin addiction. And I completely understand that I couldn't feel anything while I was getting high. Bcuz I was abused & r*ped for 8 years. And physically beat for more than half of my life. And I'm 46 years old now. And I'm so grateful bcuz I've been clean n sober for 19 years now. And it's only bcuz of the Lord Jesus Christ Almighty that I can finally feel free & I can finally breathe!

@marthablessedandsanctified Glad you were able to make it through those times. Not easy, and many fail. 46 - 19 means you were 27 when you began sobriety - that is amazing. Many push their drug use into their 30's, 40's, or until their dying day even.... whenever that may be. No one is the person they could be while under the weight of chemicals that are as powerful as the opiods or the amps, etc, that usually entail daily use.. it weakens some faster that others, and to different degrees..... but no one escapes the weakening effect, should they admit it or not.
Glad you didn't join the so-called 27 club. Please consider reaching out to others going similar. You might save someone. Please do it if feasible. I lost the mother of my children on new years of 2024, this year... I won't go into details, but myself and our 4 children had not seen her since 2018.... I couldn't get through to her, maybe someone could have helped.... I don't know. Take care and Glad you made it.

Really like your Tool - reactions. How would a simple kiss mean anything (to me) compared to the kick you maybe get from whatever on social media? What happened to subtlety? Maynard is amazing in describe this in a graphic metaphoric way.

Childbirth is a frequent esoteric topic in Maynard's lyrics/videos. I was quickly reminded of that when I saw the nails coming out the belly button, what looks like umbilical cord, lack of hair, naked, etc. Obviously not the entire meaning of his music but it seems to pop up everywhere over the years of his career

Honestly, you actually caught it again. The "need" to satiate our desires to the point that whatever we seek comfort in is no longer effective. We need MORE and MORE to numb the craving but it never actually addresses WHY we are looking for this change, the flipping of the bit from 1 to 0, in ourself to begin with.
Maynard DOES like to obscure his message of enlightenment behind more blatant interpretations at times.
The above is merely opinion, to be clear.

  • @williammann376

The Hollow by A Perfect Circle (one of Maynard's other bands) goes nicely with this song. Underneath, they have a similar message. Also, Prison Sex by Tool please. I would recommend the extended live version. It has an extra verse that needs to be heard.

Whoever thinks this is about other people (society) and not our own relationship to ourselves, then they need more introspection. Personally, I use Tool reactions as a pleasure distraction. This is the only one that generated a vision forward.

Your insight into the lyrics and music score is special. I don't normally do this, but please listen to Judith by A Perfect Circle (another of Maynards bands) and Wings for Marie (part 1) and 10,000 days (Wings part 2) by Tool. All 3 songs are connected, but beautifully depict the stages of grief. As a heads up, you very well might cry during 10,000 days part 1 and 2.

As an addict, i am never really looking for any specific 'thing.' I am always looking to change the way i feel now. If i feel good, i want to feel better. Then from better to best. But as Alan Watts points out, an increase in one degree has a change in the similiar degree on the flip side. If i go on a 2 week relapse run, it always increases my pain on the other side.
So now, the challenge is to be ok being uncomfortable. As an addict, i hate it.

    • @HeartSupport
      @HeartSupport  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

From reem182: @BMore_Vidblog Hey there, thank you for your honesty and for sharing part of your story. That takes more courage than a lot of people know, so thank you. And I can relate to your feelings of always pursuing the next best feeling, never being content with how you are now. In my own struggles I have felt that weight so often, and it has told me that I am never happy enough or at peace enough to feel good about myself. That is SUCH a heavy burden to carry around, so I want you to know that I see you, I understand where you're coming from, and you are not alone in this fight.
Addiction is a cruel monster, and in order to break it we need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, as you mentioned. But wow, that feels like an oxymoron, right?! It goes against everything our bodies want. It's such a hard battle to fight addiction, because it's SO MUCH easier to just give in. Addiction tells us that we are never enough as we are, and that our joy is never enough as it is. But what if I told you that you are loved eternally and that there is hope beyond this addiction that sees you exactly as you are right now and loves you for who you are. That voice of hope might feel weak compared to the voices of addiction, but I promise you that it is infinitely more powerful and unconditional. For me, clinging to those things in life that matter the most to me is what helps me keep fighting. Holding fast to the people I love, to the promise of a future free from addiction, and to the love of the God who saves me.
Whatever you believe, I know that this addiction is not the most powerful thing watching over you. It might tell you that, but it's not true. You were made to feel joy and peace exactly as you are, no matter what your situation looks like. So wherever you are when you read this, I want you to know that you are not alone, you are loved beyond comprehension, and you DO have the power to overcome this addiction. Yes, it will be hard, and yes, it will be painful. But cling to the simple fact that it is possible, and day by day, the voices of hope will grow louder than the voices of addiction. Thank you for reaching out, friend. You are in my thoughts and prayers right now.

@@HeartSupport Thank you for such a heartfelt reply. I agree with what you say. All the intangible virtues that I find I find in other people. If I avail myself to all the grace (daily meetings, therapy, step work, etc), I receive that grace. My story is like many others. One of the hardest things when I started out on an 8 yr journey, was finding out I didn't really know who I was. I started using at age 13...heavily at 17. I'm now 55. I was a 12 yo emotionally. Bi polar doest help. Thank you again for the helping hand.

I think the song can be summed up by the lyrics near the end:
    Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
    Desensitized to everything
    What became of subtlety?
The best part about this video was that MTV wouldn't show the song title. They called it "Track #1." The irony makes me laugh!
