- On May 14, 1945, German Submarine U-858 surrendered at Fort Miles, Lewes, Delaware. This was the first Axis ship to surrender to United States forces following the German defeat. The film shows the German crew being taken out of the submarine and being patted down by military police and, paperwork of the surrender being signed. U-858 was later used for War bond advertising and on November 21, 1947, the boat was scuttled as torpedo practice off the coast of New England.

Shortly after the Armistice in November 1918, Harwich was where dozens of German U-boats officially surrendered to the Allied forces. Their exact number is not known, but there were estimated to be between 120 and 150 U-boats in total, along with various other German ships and support machinery.
Rare footage of our past. Thanks !
