U-853: The Last U-Boat Sunk in U.S. Waters

  • On 5/6 May 1945, the German U-Boat U-853 attacked and sunk the collier SS BLACK POINT. Shortly after, the United States Navy located and sunk the submarine. Located only six miles south of Point Judith, Rhode Island, U-853 rests in just over 100 feet of water. Artifacts were recovered at the time of her sinking and have since made their way to the museum.

    My Great Uncle was Captain Charles Prior, Captain Of the SS Blackpoint. I have often wondered about that day, when this U boat sank my Great Uncle's ship. Very good testament to history, facts are fascinating. Thank you very much!

    The schnorkel was a Dutch invention which the Germans found in Rotterdam.

    That beginning with the turtle in clear blue water sure wasn't filmed in NE waters.
