Fun fact, Art Garfunkel had a friend in college who went blind, and his friend’s nickname for him was Darkness. Art would guide him around campus, and when they would meet, his friend would greet him with, “Hello Darkness” They would talk and study together. It was the inspiration for the first line.
Did you notice that when Matt was singing, Scott took over the bass line. These people are SO talented. Absolutely insane with how good Pentatonix is!
I was looking for this comment to make sure it's here. Scott sings bass / baritone / tenor ...whatever part is needed to lead or fill out a song.
Hardly anyone hears the nosedive that Matt does at the end of the word "sound" and it drives me nuts.
Scott would do the same when Avi went higher... I think I first noticed it in PTX's Xmas special of Hallelujah when they were arranged on stage, live, in a circle.
He always do that even when Avi was still in the group.
Also, when Kirstin was singing her lead solo, Mitch went to the high harmony.
Fun reaction! (Kirstin is Latina and went for a more natural look this time, but she loves to play around with hair color, makeup, etc.)

Unison is one of the most powerful tools an arranger can use, and not enough people really notice/react to just how intense PTX uses it there near the end of Sound of Silence. Great reaction!
Scott (blonde guy that sings here first) is Baritone but he can go low so at times he does bass line when group's bass singer sings solo
he did a lot of work and training to do that. always the professional. i love him so much
Love it! This is one of my favorite songs by them. They're just so good. Their version of Imagine always makes me teary eyed--it's an incredible rendition of that song too.

One of the most beautifully written songs of all time!
Some of the technical stuff I love in this arrangement is the support role Mitch goes into. He takes over the melody briefly from Matt in those measures it gets too high for Matt. In Kirsten's verse, Mitch does higher harmony. And of course we have the unison the core trio is known for since they've been together since junior high school, if memory serves.
And of course, Kevin is just a beatbox phenomenon.

Paul Simon wrote this classic song that speaks to the heart of communication, or lack there-of. Timeless lyrics that are just as applicable today as the day they were written (circa 1964). Great reaction for this great performance.

there are several covers done by other groups but I feel Simon and Garfunkel (the original artists) and Disturbed and PTX are all good, in different ways. There is a story that when Paul Simon heard Disturbed 's cover he was so impressed, he claimed that it was now Disturbed's song. So look for Disturbed's studio version, the Conan video isn't quite top notch since the singer David Draiman was under with a cold - which you can hear in the first few bars. You subs will let me know if I'm wrong but I think there is also one more cover , I can't remember group name
@@steveeverett1736 The song has been around for decades; I''m sure there are lots of covers. These three are all great in different ways. Simon & Garfunkel's version is a warning, PTX's is hopeful, and Disturbed's is angry/regretful.

I always love your Pentatonix reactions. You should check out one of their latest originals Prayers For This World. Very powerful and meaningfull lyrics. And even though there are violins in the background you still hear their acapella style.

Back in the 70s, Paul Simon was concerned with tv grabbing all the attention. He feared families would stop interacting - "people hearing without listening" ""people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made". Nowadays, Disturbed's (and Pentatonix's) version could very well be about smartphones, social networks... 🤔

Possibly one of the greatest songs ever written.
Simon and Garfunkel highlighted the occasional lightness of silence. Disturbed portrayed the darker moments of silence. Here pentatonix takes us on the rollercoaster through both.
I love that you noticed what you call the "bing, bing, bing" at @5:29. You are only one of 2 reactors that I've seen that have called it out. I wish I knew the technical term for it but the coordination needed for that sort of descending, staccato, harmonization is amazing. You might want to give their White Winter Hymnal a go for a different example of coordination.

I've heard other reactors call those stepping stone tones "bell tones" - they use it often in their back ground harmonies and it's very cool.
My technical term for it is playing pinball with the harmonies.
Check out the version by Pentatonix of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (from the Lion King film).
I suggest you try PTX version of Gold (Kiara cover). Kiara create a unique song which PTX reworks into a magical beautiful upgrade. Mitch's vocal acrobatics are truly inspiring.
Gold is mind blowing, especially how they make it look so easy. Definitely recommended. But to really appreciate what they have done as an acapella group singing a live take, watch the Kiara original first, and note how much electronic production she uses.

Pentatonix, with every cover they do, makes the listener hear and absorb lyrics as if it's the first time they've heard the song. Love them! ❤
Part of the effect in the line “in the words that it was forming” was that they all sang the same note (even if it was in a different octave) instead of harmonizing.
Please react to Pentatonix version of "Can You Feel The Love", and Kirstie being featured in "Be My Eyes", "Say Something", "Wizard of Ahhhs"......altho all the singers are amazing, I feel Kirstie brings the emotional flavor to their songs......
I think it depends on the song. I feel they all, equally, bring emotion to the songs. Of course, if you’re the featured vocalist in the song, the emotion will predominantly fall on your shoulders to carry.

My favorite version of this song will always be the original. Much love to Pentatonix but for me no cover ever need be made. Simon and Garfunkel wrote and performed such a perfect and simple song.

This is my favorite Pentatonix song. I listen to it nearly every day. I love to focus on one singer, even when they aren't being featured. I'm always amazed. So glad you liked it. As for you..., you are becoming one of my favorite reactors. I listen to a lot of you all, but you are definitely in the top 3. Rob Squad was my first so they might be tough to beat, but you and Sebs are neck and neck for that number 2 spot.

The 2nd singer, Mitch is a tenor and countertenor.
The 3rd singer was Matt, who sings at the baritone and bass registers.
Kirstin has been with Pentatonix since the beginning. She changes hairstyles and appearance often. Kirstin sings at the soprano and mezzo soprano voice types.

I saw an interview with Paul Simon that this reflects his reaction to how people reacted to the assassination of JFK, which put the song into more meaning for me.
Don’t underestimate the sound of your voice either. I majored in instrumental and vocal music and can hear talent when it’s present…

Simon & Garfunkel did it first; Paul Simon's lyrics and music are just simply so beautiful, and the harmonies that those two men made were beautiful.
Disturbed came along and their rendition- while perhaps different from their usual fare- came way harder than S&G's version.
Most versions I've seen since then take a healthy dose of Disturbed along with them; I feel that Pentatonix definitely took some of their runs and melodic cues from there, for added drama. Adding, of course, their own brand and spin. They got to show off every member's personal style with their own verse (except percussionist Kevin, who continued to bring the rhythmic energy throughout).
A version that I particularly like is by Puddles Pity Party. Definitely check him out. I don't think I've seen you react to him, yet. You should; he's great!

Being an olde farte, I can recall when the Simon& Garfunkle original came out.
I was floored by Disturbed's cover. Fantastic. I prefer either of those to Pentatonix; YMMV.
